Chamber & Lawyers Dominate Aerotropolis Meeting

October 7-13, 2010 - The majority of speakers at last week’s eight–hour aerotropolis meeting were either linked to the Chamber of Commerce or landowners trying to have their properties included in the 2000 acres of farmland earmarked for the airport employment growth district (AEGD). A final decision is scheduled for October 13 – the last meeting of the current council before the October 25 elections.

Aerotropolis gets initial green light

October 6, 2010 - Aerotropolis has been given a green for "go." The employment lands project up at Hamilton International Airport was given unanimous approval at the Planning and Economic Development committee. The controversial plan will open up land around the airport for industrial and commercial development. The approval also requires a review for additional employment lands in the city when this project is one third completed. The issue goes to council for a vote on October 13th.

Aerotropolis takes flight

October 6, 2010 - The controversial project to open up land around the Hamilton airport to industrial and commercial development was approved 6-0 Tuesday by the planning and economic development committee. The committee, however, also voted on a motion from Mayor Fred Eisenberger that after Phase 1, or 33 per cent of the project is developed, the city undertake a review to assess Hamilton’s need for additional employment lands. This will include a review and analysis of what the mayor called the “absorption rate” and the availability of existing brownfield and greenfield sites in the city’s employment areas.

Dundas candidate question the merits of aerotropolis

October 4, 2010 - The merits of the controversial aerotropolis development project are being questioned by some of the candidates for the Dundas seat on Hamilton city council. Three of the five candidates expressed doubt about the project – with two expressing opposition – while two candidates, including incumbent Russ Powers, said they support it. The five stated their positions at an all-candidates meeting staged Monday night by the Dundas division of the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce.

October 1, 2010 - Councillors must digest over 2000 pages of text and maps as they grapple with the proposed addition of at least 3000 acres of rural land to the city’s urban boundary to create an airport employment growth district (AEGD) also known as the aerotropolis. The initial decision is set for the September 30 planning committee, followed by ratification on October 13 at the final meeting of council just 12 days before the municipal elections.

Go Slow on Areotropolis: Bratina

September 30, 2010 - Mayoral candidate Bob Bratina says he’d slow down development of the contentious Airport Employment Growth District — commonly called aerotropolis — because of unanswered questions about the financial risk to taxpayers. He also says he’d push for the creation of an inventory of under-utilized land in what he calls the north industrial corridor, stretching along the waterfront from Ferguson Avenue to the Skyway bridge, to attract or help expanding businesses because the risk to taxpayers would be zero.
