I am the first to admit that I really should be updating this a little more often, or else people will start thinking that I have once again fallen off the running wagon. Well, no worries! I have been running about 3- 4 times a week since my last post, and am proud to say that I have once again completed my Cinco De Mile-O run. For those of you that have no idea what the heck i am talking about, please feel free to take a look at this link:

I am not going to lie and tell everyone that I easily ran the 5 miles today, recently i have only been running anywhere from 2.5- 3.1 so today was really a stretch, and I really wanted to quit at about 3.75, lucky for me, unlike last cinco de mile-o i had my wife with me, and she would have no part in letting me quit, THANK YOU MANDY!!!

I ran 2 miles without stopping! I cannot believe how quickly I am getting back into this. Just yesterday my workout was run 8 walk 5 x 3 and i was struggling. Then today was a 20 minutes straight of running and I had no problem with it. It is amazing what it body is capable of doing when you set your mind to Something.

I'm not sure if I mentioned this in my last post, but I have been running almost 5 days a week and, I am already in week 6 of my program, and I can really tell a difference in how fast my body is able to adapt compared to my last attempt. I feel like by doing something every day I am adjusting quickly, but I am worried that I may be overdoing it. Nothing is hurting me but is still worried that this is going to come back and bite me in the butt later down the line. Or am
I over thinking this one?

Anyone else have a similar experience where you take a while off and are able to work out that much harder and on a more consistent basis? Its been a while, I know what you are all thinking. He stopped running, He gave up, His goal was too much for him. well, I am not going to lie. You're right. I did stop running, and had given up. I Guess I don't really have any good excuses for giving up, but I sure can give you a lot of them! But in all seriousness, I am back! I Didn't want to start blogging when i first started running again because I didn't want to keep reposting the same old, Here I am, starting again, just to sputter to a complete stop once again. So, I waited until I was about 5 weeks into another Couch to 5K program.

So far, It has been really tough to get back into the routine of things, but I can honestly say that I dont feel like I am starting from square one. The workouts have been challenging, but at the same time, I feel like I am getting through them with a lot less effort than when I started last year. I have even been running faster than my original couch to 5k program. I guess that it helps that I am starting off weighing less than last time...

For those of you that are wondering... Yes, I did put on about 15 or so pounds. But I am willing to get up, brush myself off and try again.

One thing that I have really missed since i have stopped running, is the support from my fellow running bloggers. So, If you are still stopping by after all this time PLEASE let me know how your quests are going and the struggles and triumphs you have been going through!

Week 5 Starts on Monday! But boy is it hard to get motivated still! I just cant seem to LIKE to run. It always seems like a chore. I commented on someones blog that has been having the same problem, I told them that even though I haven't learned to like to run, I like the feeling that I am getting after I am running, and that right there is enough to keep me going.

The real test is going to be the upcoming months, we are planning on doing some remodeling around the house, and when i say remodeling, Im actually going to be helping. It's going to be a challenge to get the motivation after working all day on the house to then go and run. Anyone have any suggestions? I know there is the possibility of working out in the mornings before all the work gets started, but I am just not a morning person.

Next Post: We All Fall Down

Previous Post: A Swift Kick in the Ass: Part 2

But I think I did what I needed to, to remind myself what this is all about. The past few times that I had run I was still running 3.1 miles or 5k (whichever you prefer) but I was only doing that. so my workouts were only lasting about 30 min or so. so what I decided to do was extend my workout to last an hour. but still running the same distance total. So what I did was run for a mile, walk for half a mile, so I totaled 3 miles running and 1.5 miles walking. I cant believe the difference the additional time made even though I was walking during it. It felt like I had just run it all by the end. I burned over 500 Calories as well. Go me!

I think I am going to do this for a while and see what my results are. I know that extending my actual workout by half an hour has to do some good. If anything it will get my heart and lungs back in shape and get me ready to run for the entire time. but who knows...

Next Post: It Feels Good to be Back

Previous Post: A Swift Kick in the Ass

I am going to be honest, I fell of the running bus. I didn't quite give up but I have been able to talk myself out of running, saying that I have lost enough weight and I am happy with how I look, and people have noticed how hard I have worked. but things have started going back in the direction that I started. I have gained about 10 lbs back that I have lost. so I need to do something. I havent been able to get myself to run on a regular basis. I have run multiple times saying today is going to be the day that I get totally back on track. One week I even ran 4 days in a row hoping to get myself back into it. I think what I am going to do is print out a schedule like I did when I was first running. This way I can have a visual plan in front of me that I can mark off the days that I run and use it as a reminder. I have also set another goal for myself. 220 by 2/20/11 I am giving myself 3 months to lose 26 lbs. so I need all the support that I can get to keep me on track!

Next Post: A Swift Kick in the Ass: Part 2

Previous Post: Hot Day for A Run

I just got finished a 2.5 mile run and boy was it hot outside! it's 85 with a heat index of 89! and it wasn't even noon! I am just really glad that Mandy brought up running early. I still cant believe how out of shape I am! It's surprising how quickly you can lose all that you've worked for! I cant wait to get back to where I was at and start running 5 miles every run again. I don't want to feel like I am completely starting from scratch! Well, I guess I wouldn't call it starting from scratch since when I started I couldn't even run a mile without stopping... but I feel like I have lost a lot of my running enthusiasm, and it's starting to feel more like work that It is fun. I just need some more motivation! anyone out there have any motivators? What do you do to keep yourself running when your body is telling you no?

One thing that I am really going to have to start watching is my food intake, ever since I got back from working this summer, I have been all over the place eating what ever I want, when ever I want. I need some sort of meal schedule that I can follow that tells me what to eat and when to eat, along with shopping lists and instructions on how to make everything. Mandy has always wanted to have a meal plan where you make all of your food ahead of time like on sunday, then freeze what ever you made, and have something ready to just pop in the microwave or oven for dinner. I know that I have seen a couple of different plans like that, but I don't think that I have ever seen one where the meals are really healthy and are actually good. Any suggestions?

Next Post: A Swift Kick in the Ass

Previous Post: Finally Back

It seems like its been so long since I've posted anything on here. I guess that I will start out with an update on my progress... Or lack of progress. Things started out great the week before the campers arrived , Mandy and I were going to the gym every morning, we would run for a warm up and then lift some weights. It felt really good to be in a gym and have the equipment there to use for free. but once the campers arrived, it was a completely different story! We honestly work every day from 6:50 am until as late as 1am. So waking up early, and working out late were not an option. I was able to run a few times during the 2 months I was gone, There was one evening where there wasn't much going on and I was able to get away to run with a buddy of mine, and there was also a Culver cross country meet the kids were able to participate in. It wasn't a long race, but let me tell you I think they had us running up the steepest part of every hill on campus! I was really excited to run with the kids, It was my first summer running in the meet since I started working there and this year was my 9th summer!

One thing that I was really proud of was the fact that the entire time I was there not running I was able to maintain my weight! I only gained about a pound or so, but for the lack of running I think that I did extremely well while I was there. I think because I was keeping so active and riding my bike just about everywhere I went helped me out a lot kind of keeping me in shape, and burning off some of those meals that I shouldn't have eaten.

Well, now that I am back hopefully I can get back into the routine that I was in before I left. Today mandy and I went for a 2.5 mile run, and I cant believe how sore I was! I know that it is going to take me a while before I can get back to running 5 or 6 miles a day but, hopefully It wont take too long. I am thinking to start off, I am going to get back on a scheduled program. I think I may do Hal Higdons 10K program. It starts at about the leve where I am at now and works to the 10k point, so we'll see.

Since it has been a while since Ive posted be sure to leave comments on how your training has been going, and let me know what all you have been up to! can't wait to hear from all of you followers!

Next Post: Hot Day For a Run

Previous Post: Culver Cross Country

Ill tell you theres something in the air here at camp that doesn't let you sleep I woke up this morning at about 4:30 am and just couldn't fall back asleep. Mandy and I had made plans to go to the gym at about 7:30 am but we didnt end up getting there until about 8. I ended up running a mile on the treadmill and was just to excited to use the weight machines. I ended up doing lat pull downs, triceps pull downs, and used a bunch of other machines. It felt awesome to actually lift!! The last time that I remember lifting regularly was when I was in high school and was playing football, so its been almost 8 years. I cant believe thats it has really been that long! I figured inorder to keep myself going, I left all of my stuff in the locker room, so no matter what I have to go back. I Just hope that It will be as easy to go when the kids start arriving!!

On a side note. Everyone that has been getting email updates is not going to receive them while I am away. The program that I use to send them out doesn't work on the network here. I apologize for any inconvenience.

Next Post: First Workout at Camp

Previous Post: 9.5 Mile Bike Ride

So I decided that I should go for a bike ride. I am really starting to enjoy biking! Its is relaxing but at the same time it is an awesome workout!I was really surprised when we got home and looked at Mandy's Iphone, that had been tracking our progress, how far we had biked and how quickly we biked it in. We biked 9.51 miles in 53 minutes and 28 seconds with an average mile at 5 minutes and 37 seconds. Pretty good for a nice easy ride huh?

One thing that I have forgotten to do is inform everyone that my blog may be silent for the next 2 months... I will try as hard as possible to post about my running and exercising, but I cannot promise anything. I will be working my normal summer job as a counselor at a summer camp where I have been a camper and a counselor almost all of my life. It is an extremely demanding job. I am responsable for 60 kids 8 staff members and I work 18 hour days for almost 2 months. BUT... I am determined to get workouts in at least 3 times a week. The bonus of going to the camp I have free access to one of the most amazing gyms I have ever seen. Hopefully Ill be able to get some weight training in as well as some running. I leave this weekend for camp training and probably wont be back until the end of august. So... Wish me luck and I hope that I can find some time during my busy schedule to blog about my progress!

Next Post: First Workout At Camp

Previous Post: Two 2 Mile Runs

I think it may have to do with not having the option of cook out food in the winter that makes me just want to eat a lot of it. All i do know is that it is going to have to stop, or be moderated severely. The worst part of all of this is that with my knee being hurt, I am not exercising as hard as I had been or for as long as I had been previously. I guess the only good news is that I am still exercising.

For todays and Fridays workouts I decided that I would workout on the treadmill and run 2 miles. I have decided to run on the treadmill because of my knee. I dont know how long I can go before it starts hurting and I dont want to go for a distance run and end up limping 2 miles back home. I think on monday or tuesday I am going to go to the park near by and run the circle and see how my knee holds up, then decided whether or not I am going to run on outside for the rest of the week. One thing that I am really looking forward to doing is another bike ride I really enjoyed the 7.5 Mile ride I took last week. Who knows, maybe this week I will go a lot further than that!

Next Post: 9.5 Mile Bike Ride

Previous Post: 7.5 Mile Bike Ride

Its been rainy on and off, windy and cloudy almost all day. So I was lucky enough to catch the one nice part of the day and take a quick 7.5 mile bike ride. It felt really good to get a nice workout in that didn't bother my knee much but was still enough to get my heart pumping. I really think that biking is going to become more of a regular part in my workouts. Its just nice to know that I can change things up and still know that I am going to get a great intensity workout even without running.

The only thing that I need to do now is figure out what kind of strength building activities I can do around the house. Eventually I want to join a gym, and have all the bells and whistles at my fingertips, but I want to know that I am actually going to use the membership before I sign up for one. It always seems to happen that when I spend the money towards something that I think I use. The less I want to use it. So hopefully I can get myself to start doing basic lifting at home and prove to myself that I can spend the money, and actually use the gym.

As of right now I am still not sure what program that I am going to start doing but until i figure out where I want to start I think that I am going to alternate running and biking, and throw a day of lifting and stretching in every once and a while. Hopefully I'l be able to break through this plateau and start being able to lose weight again. I am so close to my goal weight I just need to lose another 18 lbs and then any weight lost after that is just a plus.

Next Post: Two 2 Mile Runs

Previous Post: 3 Miles

Not great as in, my body didn't hurt while running. It was more of a, It felt good to run, run. If that makes any sense to you... But It really did feel good to run. After having such a hard spell, I was really excited that I was able to run 3 miles.

As far as my knee goes, It still hurts when I run. So I am going to have to figure out what to do about that. My dad left a comment on my last post about something he just recently found out about his knee problems. I guess that he has one leg that is 5mm shorter than the other, and I guess his dad also had the same thing. So who knows, I inherited that and it could be part of my hip and knee problems. So who knows, maybe a trip to the chiropractor is in the near future. Oh I also tried running in my older shoes and that didn't seem to help any so I am going to stick to running with my new shoes.

Next Post 7.5 Mile Bike Ride

Previous Post: Trying

It is really nice to know that people are looking out for me. I just want to let everyone know that my quest isn't over. I think that I am having more of a mental block than anything and I just need to work through it.

On Friday Mandy and I went for a run and ran 1.25 and my knee started bugging me again so we decided that we were going to walk. we ended to walking about 2.5 miles. Its just been so frustrating because I've wanted to run for longer distances. I think the next time that I run I am going to try my old shoes back on and see if wearing the newer shoes is playing any part in the knee pain. I started thinking about when things started hurting again. and i realized that when I first started running i was having a ton of hip pain and it eventually went away. but as soon as I started wearing my new shoes, the pain started up again. so I think my next run I'll try my older shoes. who knows it may be a cure all.

I'll be trying my hardest to get back in the swing of things, but like i said I think it is more of a mental block that I am having right now. So keep the motivational comments coming!

Next Post: 3 Miles

Previous Post: No Motivation

I have been having a hard time finding the motivation that I need to keep going. I just haven't been excited at all about running, and I am in need of some help. I have run, but It hasn't been pretty. I think this week I am at a total of like 2 miles. It didn't help that Ive had a cold, but I ran 1 mile the other day, and started to get frustrated with the knee that has been bugging me. and today I ran another mile but at a quicker pace than usual. I just can't get myself to run. On top of that I've been struggling with watching what I eat. Summer is a killer. Ive gotten the grill out on a few occasions, and been to a couple of cookouts and I just eat and eat. Its just been horrible. I weighed myself a few times the past 2 weeks and I maybe have gained a pound or 2, so I am starting to get worried. but at the same time, I havent been able to lose any weight in about a month or so... I really feel like I have hit a wall and I am starting to lose my enthusiasm and I hate it. Has anyone experienced this at all? How did you go about getting back on track? I seriously need a kick in the butt. I think that I need to get back to my running schedule. It'll give me some guidance on how far to run rather than just going out and running as far as I can. So maybe monday I'll figure out where I should be on my 10k program or even just start on a 15k program as a beginner. who knows...

Although I have been struggling, I was excited about my run today. it was only a mile, but I ran it faster than I have ever run a mile. I ran it in 9 minutes 9 seconds, and i really feel like I could have run it faster than that. So that is a plus...

Next Post: Trying

Previous Post: Bedtime Blog

I was just Laying in bed thinking to myself, wow Ive already run 2 times this week without blogging and I don't want to get use to this! I should be blogging almost every time I run! So here I am at 12:30 blogging from bed, via my iPhone. So I apologize ahead of time for any typing mistakes I make.

So let's start with yesterday. It was a really crummy day ouside and I recentl got myself a new pair or running shoes so I figured it would be a bad idea to go puddle jumping in my neon white shoes. So instead I visited my old friend the treadmill and ran on it for 3.1 miles. I finally had to stop because my knee started to bother me and I just don't want to mess it up and have to sit a week out waiting for it to recover.

Today Mandy and I decided to run outside again. Usually Mandy and I run at a park of along the river when we run ouside. But today we figured we could save ourselfs some time by just running around where we live. It actually turned out to be a pretty good run. I had to stop once because my knee was bugging me but after a little stretching the pain went away and would only come back if I was running on really uneven ground. After all was said and done we ended up running a little bit over 5.5 miles today!

I still think is is amazing that I am able to run as far as I have been the past few weeks. I still think back to when I started how I couldn't even run 1 mile without stopping. And here I am running 3 miles 1 day and then 5 the next. It's just amazing what your body is capable of doing when you set your mind to it.

Well anyways I better get going to bed! But this week has just been one of those weeks where I run, and just forget about blogging, then I tell myself I'll update everyone after my next run. And that never happened. So again, I apologize to all of my followers that have been wondering where the heck I have been this past week.

This week I decided that I was going to change things up a little bit when running. I know I am supposed to be following a schedule, but for some reason I just cant get myself to actually follow it. I know sometime in the near future I am just going to have to follow it but I have gotten to the point where I can run 5 consecutive miles, and starting the 10k program over again kinda seems like a waste of a time considering the 10k program is the equivalent of running 6.2 miles. and I can already run 5. So I really don't know what to do at this point. but anyways, I got way off subject. Like I had said. I changed it up this week. Instead of running 5 miles I thought that I would run about 2.5 miles and bike about the same. so Its a different workout, and I ]know that I will be on my bike a lot this summer. So I just figured that I would make sure I was ready to ride when the time came.

It really amazes me that biking and running can be so different, but at the same time a lot the same. its almost the same motion... with no impact, but it's a completely different workout. different breathing, and it takes a different focus. But I really am liking the change in workouts, and It is really exciting to think about doing triathlons (something that I am def. going to do as some point.) But It has really made me stop and think about how I work out. I mean should I only train for just a marathon or should I start training for a triathlon? If Triathlon is the case I need to find a place to start swimming. And believe it or not I know that swimming is going to be the biggest challenge of them all. Its not that I don't know how to swim. I just have no idea how to swim correctly. I am one of those people that does freestyle with my heat completely out of the water. So this should really be interesting. Anyways, I feel like I am rambling, so I guess Ill post on monday after my run, or when I decide for sure what I want to train for. If anyone has any input on the matter feel free to leave a comment.

Next Post: Bedtime Blog

Previous Post: Another 5 Miles

From this day forward on 5th of may I will run 5 miles. Anyone wanting yet another holiday to celebrate on this day is more than welcome to join me!

Todays run was a real struggle for me. It was the first time that I have run outside alone. Normally Mandy joins me when I run outside. I'm not going to lie, it felt really weird running alone. No one there to encourage me, or someone to try and impress with my mad running skills. It was me vs the road. I really had to dig deep to finish the 5 miles toady because the little voices in my head kept saying, oh you are too tired to go that far today... You just ran 6.1 the other day there is no need to over do it. I just had to shut them out and keep running. Its feels amazing to say that I am able to run 5 miles!

On a side note for those of you that were worried about my poor nipples: No blood today, I remembered to use my roll on chafing stuff! While there we decided that we were going to go for a quick 3 mile run on sunday evening so we didn't feel like we had been lazy the entire weekend. This nice easy run turned out to be a very painful run emotionally, and mentally. so heres what happened... Keep in mind that my longest run to date was 3.75 miles, and that was last week.

So like I said, Sunday evening we decide to go for a 3 mile run. I have never run at my moms house so I was getting running directions for a 3 mile, or a 4 mile or a different 3 mile, or a 2 mile, It all depended on what direction I wanted to go, and how far I wanted to go. So I think thats where things started to go wrong. So off we went thinking I knew the directions, It was going to be easy... Go to the stop sign, take a left to the next stop sign, and come back. Well, The 1st road that we had taken was somewhat of a busy road and half way through the run I remembered that there was another route to make a square so we didn't have to run back on that same road. So, at that second stop sign we took another left. and ran for quite a while, and I started to get worried. I had no idea what road connected this road to the 1st road we were on. Street names didn't sound familiar, and we got to the point where If we had passed the road It would be further to run back to it and cut across than it would be to find another that connected. so again, we kept running. at this point I was starting to get mad, I was completely warn out, I had to pee, I had to poop, and occasionally dinner wanted to make a comeback, so truth be told I was very unhappy at this point.

After what seemed to be forever, We finally reached a point that looked familiar. You think I would be happy to know where I was, but no, I became EVEN more upset! we had run past the road a good 2 miles, and still had another 2 to go! I about stopped at the restaurants and called for a ride home! But I decided against it and wanted to see how far I could push myself. I am proud to say that I completed the entire 6.1 miles! But with running success, comes the aftermath of pain.

- For those of you that are squeamish about blood, Please do not look at the pictures!

Yes, I ran so much my nipples chaffed and bled... For those of you that that run out in the country, have you ever had to run against a 15- 20 mph wind? Let me tell you It SUCKS! Worst of all the windy parts of my run were all up hill. It really dissipointed me because I was only able to run about 3 miles but it felt like I had run 5. The wind really wore me out today! I was really bummed because last night I was thinking about doing a 5 mile run just to test it out. Well, I'll write more about this later and put all the previous and next links when I get home. I am blogging from the passenger seat of mandy's car writing on my iPhone. I just didn't want to keep everyone gaming over the weekend! Have a great one!!

Next Post: Getting Lost While Running

Previous Post: J-E-L-L-O

Not to say that I don't feel good that I ran it but, its amazing how much of a difference it is than 3.1 miles! I have really started to like running out side. Its just a lot more relaxing and there is a lot more to take my mind off of thinking about running. I think it is so cool that I have gotten this far in such a short period of time. If you would have told me that last april that next april I would be running 5ks every time I ran I would probably laugh at you... or I would have said to myself... Geez I better start training for that! and maybe I would be running 10 miles by now if you had said something... so thanks for holding me back!!! I'm just kidding!

One question for those readers that run a lot is... Was there ever a point where you felt like you were running and running and running, and you can't seem to lose any weight? I think I have hit a point where my body doesn't want to lose anymore weight. It sucks because I am about 18 or so lbs. from my goal weight. Maybe if I start kicking my butt lifting weights I can get my metabolism going a little bit faster, and start shedding the pounds. Or maybe Its a matter of just picking up the pace a bit when I run. So If anyone has any ideas PLEASE let me know!

Next Post: Up Hill Battle Against The Wind

Previous Post: Running In The Rain

I really don't have any excuse for why I didn't blog, so I hope you forgive me. Well, I guess Ill have to play a little bit of catchup on this post do you know how things have been going.

Last week I had a really frustrating week. I tried running outside for the first time In Indiana, and boy was I frustrated. A lot of things really got to me on that run. first off, I swear there has never been as much traffic on that road in months, as there was the day I decided to run. so I was having to jump on and off the road again and again because there are no sidewalks anywhere. so that was frustrating. Normally, when running on the treadmill I usually don't have any incline when I run, so I can maintain a pace. well running where I ran I swear the entire thing was a hill, but you never realize that when you are driving on it. the third thing that really made me mad is that my headphones kept falling out. That part is really my fault... I thought that I would be smart and wear the headphone wire in the back so my arms never hit the cord... Yeah... Bad idea, I never thought by doing that it would cause the ear buds to not sit right in my ears and fall out. But anyways, I was able to run about 2.5 miles or so which wasn't bad but it was still very frustrating. The rest of the week of course I decided to run on the treadmill, there was no need to get overwhelmed by running on the street again till I felt I was ready to try again.

So to start this week off I decided that I was going to try running outside again. and I am glad I did. Instead of running out on the road Mandy reminded me of a park that has a paved path that is about 1.25 miles per lap. So we decided to run there this morning. It was a really nice run, Kinda chilly so I didn't over heat, kind of cloudy and a little bit of a breeze, It was nice until we started lap 2. The wind decided to pick up, and it started drizzling. at first I started to get frustrated, but after about 2 or 3 minutes I started to enjoy running in the rain, It took my mind off of other thing. It was really strange, If i were to have been walking in this same weather I think it would have driven me nuts... I don't know why but I have always felt like if I were in the rain I would rather it be pouring so I am soaked within seconds rather than a little drizzle. But like I said, I really enjoyed it today, and I don't know why.

Next Post: J-E-L-L-O

Previous Post: On to Bigger and Better Things

It took a heck of a lot longer than planned, but It's done! Now to figure out what day to start my 10k Plan. Anyone have a suggestion on when my long run should be? right now it has me running my long run on sunday, but I don't know if that would be best. I think that Mid week may be better because I have a lot less going on during the week and my weekends are usually pretty busy.

On another note, I just wanted to let everyone know that Mandy and I have joined a 6 month, do it yourself weight loss competition Called Healthy Train. Mandy and I wanted to join the last competition, but that was before I started running. We each had to send in before pics, and at the end will have to send in our after pictures. I think this is going to be awesome! Yet another reason to keep running and keep losing weight! Hopefully, Ill be able to lose the rest of this weight between now and then! If you are interested in taking a look at the last competitions results check out the link above! Wish Me Luck!

Next Post: Running In The Rain

Previous Post: Another 3.1 Down
