Wait... Get Him to the Greek is a psudo-sequel to Forgetting Sarah Marshall? You're completely right that Forgetting Sarah Marshall was one of the better comedies in a long long time. I understand not wanting to brand a new movie with the baggage of having a relationship with an older (and unsuccessful) movie... but if they'd mentioned that Brand's character was from FSM, I'd probably have seen Greek by now.

I also agree about Jonah Hill, and Superbad. Both are terribly overrated, and I just don't understand what charm Hill is supposed to have.

It's one of those "he's unlikable on purpose, so you're supposed to love his flaws" type of a situation, but in everything I've ever seen him in, he was more akin to "he's unlikable on purpose, and maybe if Hill was a stronger actor he could pull it off, but in the end he's just unlikable." I've never seen him in anything where an alternative actor wouldn't have been preferable.

Great review Dale.

Thanks!

I feel bad that I hadn't commented on this when I read it (a day or so after it was posted).

This is another one of those instances where no one posts, because there really isn't much to disagree with.

It's a great list, with great insight.

I frankly think it was a weak decade for movies, and looking through your list, and the IMDB top 250 (which is a pretty bizarre list when you really look at it), just to job my memory... I really can't find any movie from the decade that stands out as being "worthy" of holding the title of best movie of the decade.

The Dark Knight Returns?
Fellowship of the Ring?
Crouching Tiger?
Avatar (I was blown away by it)?
Up in the Air?

Plenty of good movies... but... none of them feel like they deserve to be called the best movie in an arbitrary span of time.

Fellowship is probably the best pick.

I thought the Unobtanium bit was blazingly obvious: it's a room-temperature superconductor. There was even a little lump floating in a magnetic field for crying out loud! My main gripe was the decision to go on a perilous makeshift bombing run, instead of directing the main drive laser from their enormous orbiting spaceship onto the target and turning it on for a second.

I TOTALLY agree with you on "The Hurt Locker". It started out fairly suspenseful but I was surprised at how boring the last hour was (it did improve slightly at the end). No character development, plotless, and not all that interesting. I haven't seen "Precious", "An Education", "A Serious Man" or "The Bright Side" yet, but I wouldn't doubt that they're all better than "The Hurt Locker". It was one of the most overrated movies I've seen in a loooong time. I thought it was merely okay when I first saw it, but the more I think about it, the lamer it gets. But, hey, an overrated movie wins Best Picture every single year, pretty much, so it's not such a surprise.
