Last week I started looking for some fun, new crafts and I came across all of these DIY fairy garden ideas.  I am hooked!

Seriously, I can’t believe the cuteness and the creativity.  I am thinking about some of my outdoor planters and what I can do with them in Spring.  And, lucky for me, I also have several vintage suitcases and an old rusty wheelbarrow that I can use as containers for fairy gardens (see examples below).

I have always thought of fairy gardens as a children’s craft, but apparently that is not the case.  Of course, you could get your kids involved in this, but you can also do it just for YOU! 

Maybe this my inner child calling out for some playtime.

HOW TO MAKE A FAIRY GARDEN

Now, I have not made one myself yet, but when I make one this Spring, this is how it will go for me:

• PICK YOUR LOCATION AND SIZE:  Fairy gardens can be either indoors or outdoors and they can be a wide variety of sizes.  You can create one in a small teacup or create a fairy village under a tree.  Keep weather in mind when you are deciding where the garden will be as some items won’t do well in direct sunlight or rain.
• CHOOSE YOUR LOOK: As you can see from all of these photos, a fairy garden can be whatever you want it to be.  Maybe you will want to create a theme from a favorite movie or book (Peter Pan perhaps?) or if you are going for a cottage or English garden theme.
• CREATE YOUR PLAN:  Drawing out what you have in mind is a great way to figure out what items you will actually need.  This way, you can see what you already have around the house and what you will need to purchase.
• CHOOSE YOUR PLANTS:  Do you want to use regular sized plants (this would be good for a large container) or actual fairy sized plants?  Many plant nurseries carry mini plants just for this purpose.
• CREATE YOUR GARDEN:  Now you get to have fun!  Arrange your plants and extra items as you have envisioned.  Take your time with placement and wait for the whole thing to come together. As you create your miniature garden, you might find yourself thinking of new things or a new theme.  Feel free to go with it.  The fun is in the creativity!

INDOOR OR OUTDOOR FAIRY GARDENS

Making this choice might simply be a decision about size or the elements.  If you want to use sturdy supplies, feel free to create something in your backyard.  If you want to use more delicate accessories, something inside the house might be better.

Indoors, a teacup or an old clock (scroll to find the picture) will work great.  You can create something small and place it among your home decor.

A bigger container like a whiskey barrel planter or a vintage wagon will look great on your patio or in the garden.  A bigger item also allows you to create a larger theme.  Keep in mind that a larger container also demands more plants and supplies, which leads to a higher price point.

Have you been inspired?  I have!  This Spring I will be creating a fairy garden in at least one of my whiskey barrel planters.  I also have an antique suitcase and a super rusty wheelbarrow.  I think the suitcase will need to be indoors or under the cover of my patio. I am not sure I want it exposed to the elements.

Seven years ago, I moved into my very own house and immediately started looking for small kitchen ideas.  I had just downsized after a divorce and my new house was about 1/4 the size of my previous one, so I needed to use the available space in the best way possible.

Overall, I find that being creative with using space is key to living in a small house, and I am pretty sure that I am an expert at it!

I do want to point out the picture above from Assortment.  That kitchen is in a 665 square foot house!  I recommend hopping over to their blog since there are so many good ideas for living small.  Very inspiring!

OK, back to small kitchens (and houses).

One very important factor in living small is getting rid of the excess.  When I first moved into my house, I actually had room on my shelves, even though my house was much smaller than my previous one.  After garage sales, dump runs, and thrift store drop-offs, I only had the goods that I needed and loved, and it felt great.  After 7 years, I think I need to go through stuff again, not because I have overstuffed shelves, but because I have a lot of stuff I don’t use.  And it just sits on shelves, taking up space.

One of the bigger challenges with a small kitchen is where to put everything.  This is where the idea of “a place for everything and everything in its place” is helpful.  Some of us have the budget to remodel the space and create a new layout, but many of us need to use what we have to the fullest.

When the latter is the case, the best thing you can do is to keep what you need and get rid of the rest.

When it comes to getting organized and figuring out what you need, here are some tips to get you started:

• Take some time to figure out what you NEED.  Go through all of the goods and make a pile of the necessary items.  This will help you to decide how much space you need for it all and whether you will need to add storage to make it all fit.
• Create piles of what can be donated/given away or thrown in the trash.  If you haven’t used an item for years, it can definitely be gotten rid of.  Often, we are worried that if we throw something away, we will need it again in the future.  Simply keep your goal in mind: a functional kitchen for today.  This makes giving things away a bit easier.
• Once you know what you are keeping, figure out if your kitchen has room for it all.  Do you need to make some changes?  Do you need to add storage?  Will a standing pantry solve a problem?  Or a hanging pot rack?  Or an island?
• Keep only frequently used items on your kitchen counter.  If you only use a rice cooker once a month, find a spot for it in the cupboards.  Don’t drink coffee every morning?  Store the coffee maker somewhere besides the counter.  This helps to create a workable area that makes cooking and cleaning simple rather than cluttered.

One of my favorite things in my small kitchen is the island.  Not only does it add workspace, but I can also use it to hold decorative items when I am not using it.  The couple that owned my house prior to me built the island from scratch. 

Building an island can be a simple, weekend project if you choose a basic tutorial.  An old dresser with a new top added also works well and adds farmhouse charm to your kitchen,

Working with a small kitchen design might be challenging, but it is more than doable.  Take the time to plan how you want to use your kitchen, what you need to make that happen, and then work your plan.  Whether your layout is L-shaped or Galley style, creating a workable space for you and your family is worth it.

Don’t let a small budget stop you!  Get creative and check out the Dollar Store, thrift stores and yard sales, and rework what you already have.  Storage containers such as plastic bins, wicker baskets, and mason jars all work to create something useful and stylish while staying on a budget.

KITCHEN STORAGE FOR SMALL KITCHENS

If you are anything like me, the kitchen is the most cluttered space in your home and that is why we need some kitchen storage ideas!  My house small and that means I have a bunch of items that need a space of their own in tight quarters.  Now only cooking items, but cookbooks, dishes, and the mandatory junk drawer (we all have one, don’t we?).

Because I use my kitchen so often, and it is connected to the living room and dining area, it tends to be a “drop off” area. When I walk in the door, kitchen counters seem to be the obvious spot to drop keys, packages, my purse, and general stuff brought into the house.  If I am not careful, the clutter will stack up and that makes me crazy!

Yes, I love order, and in order to keep things tidy, a plan is needed.  So, let’s jump in and figure out our plan!

ORGANIZING THE KITCHEN

Organizing a kitchen is best done in an empty kitchen.  If you want to have the best success, remove all of the stuff.  You are reading that right!  Take it all out of the cupboards and the drawers and put it to the side.  This will help you to see what you actually have and take stock of what you might need.

If you don’t want to take that step, organize one cupboard at a time, one drawer at a time.  Use the tips below to create a functional kitchen with everything in arms reach.

• Only keep the items that you actually use.  There is no need to keep duplicates of most items.  If you haven’t used an item for a long time, don’t keep it.  This is a good time to remember that our cooking goes through stages so if you haven’t used the crock pot in 3 years, you probably won’t use it again.  If you feel guilty about tossing things, giving them away, donate them, or store them in the garage or shed, just in case.  Just get them out of the kitchen.
• Group similar items together.  Baking items, cookbooks, dishes, cookware, and kitchen appliances.  Create piles of items that are used together or that would best be stored together.
• Figure out the obvious spaces for the goods to go.  Glasses are best stored close to the sink.  Baking goods can be stored in a bottom cabinet.  Pots and pans are very convenient to reach when they are next to the stove.  Which appliances need to be on the counters?  Which lesser used ones can be stored in cabinets?  A little tip for families is to put dishes in bottom cabinets so kids can easily reach them.  This will make one less job for you at dinner time and allows your children to be part of the process.
• Think about containers that will create a more organized space. Baskets, plastic containers, jars and extra shelving are ideas that might help.  Will you buy them?  DIY them?  Make a plan.  If you are creative, this does not need to be expensive at all.
• Use your cabinet and drawer space wisely.  A lazy-susan, shelf risers, and cabinet organizers maximize your space.  Drawer dividers make everything easier to see and keep things close.  Your pantry is a great place for dividers and extra shelving.
• Put it all back and get rid of what you don’t need.  Over time you can adjust as necessary.  When you use an item, put it back in the correct place to avoid creating clutter again.

Kitchen storage can be quite cheap if you are creative and willing to try new things.  A DIY project such as extra shelves in the pantry or a lazy-susan in a corner cabinet will add space, making the area more organized.  Another way to add a lot more space is to build a kitchen island.  This is a more complicated project, but it is doable.  Check out this post for 25 amazing ideas you can try.

If you want to purchase new baskets and storage containers, try the dollar store and Walmart.  They carry lots of great pieces that are inexpensive.  The dollar store has a ton of plastic containers that can be painted and labeled, which will give you eye-catching organization.  After all, storage is just storage until you make it cute!

MODERN FARMHOUSE HOME DECOR IDEAS

Farmhouse home decor has been a favorite for years, and for good reason.  Not only are a lot of neutrals used, but natural textures and used (refinished) furniture pieces are a big part of the look.  This, of course means that you can add farmhouse decor to your home without breaking the budget. 

It just takes a bit of imagination on your part!

Up until several years ago, the farmhouse look was typically neutral, without much added color.  Today, it is more common to start with a neutral background (furniture and wall color) and add colors that suit your fancy.  This makes it very simple to refresh a room and spend minimal money, since you are only switching out decor pieces as opposed to furniture. 

And while we are on the topic, many of those decor pieces can be painted with chalk paint and repurposed in a color you enjoy!  Chalk paint works well on wood, glass, and metal and can generally be used with minimal prep work.

FARMHOUSE HOME DECORATING IDEAS

Below you can see one of my favorite colors to add to my own decor: aqua or sea glass.  I have two walls in my living room painted this same color.  It isn’t intrusive or overly noticeable, but it provides a pallet off of which to play with.  This color looks great with pink added throughout the room.

Other great wall colors are navy blue and pink.  They all add a richness to the look of a room, and they create a more colorful look than straight neutrals.

Black is also a great color to add to a wall, baseboards, doors, and other decor items.  It adds a nice modern touch to a space.  Since black is so dark, it also hides smudges and dirt better than white, and I consider that a big bonus!

When it comes to rustic, farmhouse home decor, it is simple to keep within your decorating budget.  All it takes is some imagination and a willingness to try new things.

A cheap and easy way to come up with furniture is to buy it at a yard sale or Facebook Marketplace.  You will be surprised how little money you will need to spend to get something amazing.  I have repurposed furniture throughout my house, and I have never paid more than $5 for a piece.  All you need to do is clean it up and paint it with chalk paint to have a whole new piece for your living room or bedroom.  You can see a few of my flips here:

All of those flips were simple and easy to do and all of them were cheap.  In fact, that is one of my favorite things about farmhouse home decor: the cost is low, and the look is amazing.

Another easy way to transform a room is with paint.  For a small room, all you need is a gallon, and you are set!  Painting walls is one of the easiest ways to brighten things up, even though, to be honest, it is one of my least favorite things to do.  I always remind myself of the benefits of painting in order to talk myself into doing it!

Did you find some inspiration in any of those ideas?  I sure hope so!

Adding rustic touches to your bedroom or kitchen, or even throughout your house is easy.  I suggest that you pick a pallet to use throughout your home, if you want the look to flow.  Then start working one room at a time.  Creating a Pinterest board that you can refer to is a huge help when you are planning and shopping.  

Be sure to give yourself lots of time to make your project plans into reality.  Trying to redecorate your home over a weekend (or even a month) will be frustrating and stressful.  A 6-month or year-long timeline is a better way to go, and if you end up finishing early, great!

Many of these ideas can be used in an apartment.  Even if you are unable to paint the walls, you can add lots of lovely touches throughout to make the space a little more “YOU”.

Shopping with your Pinterest board ideas will help you to know what to buy for each room.  If you are working on the bathroom but find something for the bedroom, buy it and set it aside until you are ready.

Shopping at yard sales, thrift stores, dollar stores, and Facebook Marketplace will all yield budget-friendly results. If you need to, put a limit on the amount you are willing to spend for a piece.  My limit is $5 and will only go over that if the piece is amazing.  Even then, my limit is $10.  I figure something else will come along in my price range if I keep looking.

ENTRYWAY DECORATING IDEAS FOR THE HOME

I have a very small entryway in my home, so small that it is almost not an entryway but rather a wall with a closet by the front door.  I searched for some entryway decor ideas, and I was not disappointed!  There are numerous ideas in this post that I would LOVE to use, and I can personalize them for the space that I have available.

One of the first things I need to do is to repaint a couple of walls in my living room.  Right now, the accent walls are Seaglass, but I am now looking for a color that is a little richer and more inviting.  The blues that I see in some of these pictures might be the direction I choose.  My only hang up is that I am concerned that dark blue will make my small space look smaller, but that is a concern for another day.

One thing that I LOVE about decorating is all of the little touches you can add to a space.  Shelves hold baskets, hats, jars and knick knacks, while a bench adds space for sitting, as well as space underneath for cubbies or drawers.  This type of space is perfect for kids to store their school or sports items that need to be used frequently.

I love a good blanket ladder! If you do too, just know that you can buy an old ladder from a yard sale for $5 and it works just as well as the one pictured above.  In fact, I once bought a very large, old extension ladder for $3 and cut it into 3 blankets ladders.  I shared the extra two with friends and they loved them too.  Always remember, you don’t need to spend a ton of money to create a great look for your home.

Adding items to the wall, such as shelves and ladders, allows you to create a beautiful space without needing more square footage.  In fact, I prefer smaller homes because of the coziness factor!

There are numerous ways to decorate your foyer or mudroom.  Since the space is usually on the smaller side of things, it is best to gather items that are not overly bulky.  Small tables, single chairs, mirrors, benches, and shelves all work well.  I love the look of a set of chairs painted in graduated hues of one-color, hanging on the wall.  You could also add items on top of the chairs for visual interest.

CHRISTMAS FRONT PORCH DECOR IDEAS

The holidays are just around the corner and that means we need some Christmas front porc h decor ideas!  There is no reason to keep the cuteness stuck in the inside of the house.  Decorating the front porch lets everyone know that you love Christmas and provides cheer for the whole neighborhood!

Christmas decorating is so fun.  I pick a theme each year and add it all over my house – inside and outside.  Because of this, I have lots of items from years past that I can use over and over again.  You will often find me taking old decor items apart to create new ones.  And because of this, I can keep decorating for the holidays cheap and on budget.

This year’s theme is “Candy Land”.  I have a white tree and I will be creating lots of bright and colorful pieces to scatter on the tree and around the house.  And, as you might guess, the next picture is my absolute favorite and I will be using this theme as inspiration.

DIY CHRISTMAS FRONT PORCH DECOR

The front porch provides a lot of different areas to decorate.  The front door, railings, planters and boxes, chairs and tables are all a blank canvas for decor.  You can go keep the decorations cheap and within budget if you make some of them yourself.

Other inexpensive sources for Christmas decorations for the front porch are Hobby Lobby, Michaels, thrift stores, and yard sales.  Even if you do not purchase anything at the craft store, you will find tons of creative ideas.

Shopping at thrift stores and yard sales might mean that you need to plan ahead.  Knowing what you are looking for early helps as you find things to collect.  Keep in mind that you can use chalk paint for the colors you are looking for.  Small furniture items, picture frames, planters, glass or metal jars, and wood pieces can all be painted to suit the style you are looking for.

Also, be sure to shop your craft room or craft storage for items like ribbon, fabric, paint, containers, wreath bases, and flowers that can be used, even if it is only the color you like.

FARMHOUSE CHRISTMAS FRONT PORCH DECOR

If you are chalk painting items for your front porch, it is a good idea to add a clear coat to your pieces.  This will help to keep the paint from flaking when it rains or snows.

Your garage or shed is also a good source of items for a Farmhouse Christmas look.  Antique and vintage goods can be repurposed for your front porch decor.  And don’t let a little rust or chipped paint scare you off as it contributes to the farmhouse look (see the wagon in the above picture).

I have a very small porch, but someday I hope to have a porch with a seating area.  Chairs and tables are perfect spots for seasonal pillows and blankets to create splashes of color.

Railings, posts and beams are a great place to add lights, swags, and greenery.  Or be like me and go a little crazy and add lights to the greenery!  This is such a cozy, homey look.

DIY FARMHOUSE DECORATING IDEAS

If you are looking for DIY Dollar Store Farmhouse decor, you are going to find so much to love in this post!  One of my favorite things about decorating is finding cheap ways to create cuteness in my home.  Whether you are looking for projects for the living room, kitchen, or bedroom, there is a lot of eye-candy to choose from.

Decorating on a budget is not hard, but you do have to be creative…and don’t let that scare you!

One thing that I suggest that you do when you are figuring out your home decor style is to start a Pinterest board.  Simply begin pinning home decor looks that you like and that inspire you.  Do not concern yourself with the size of the homes or what might be trending.  If it catches your eye, pin it!

Do this over several days and you will start noticing a pattern in what you like.  It might be colors, types of furniture, textures, or the decor style.

DIY FARMHOUSE DECOR IDEAS

Once you have noticed the pattern, keep pinning with that decor style in mind.  This will become your “vision board”.  You can check in to remind yourself the type of look you are going for because it can get confusing when there is so much to choose from!

Keep in mind that your home can be any style and color you want it to be.  You do not have to stick to typical farmhouse looks if what you want is a purple couch.  Create your own farmhouse look with the couch that makes you happy.

All of these tutorials and ideas can be used in your home or apartment.  They are cheap and easy ideas that you can use to add a touch of style to your home or redecorate the entire thing.

I suggest starting with your living room, if you are unsure where to start.  This room is generally the most used in the house and it feels really good to have a living room that reflects “YOU”!

DIY DOLLAR STORE FARMHOUSE DECOR

One great thing about farmhouse style decor is that, in general, there is a neutral quality to it.  In my own home, the background of each room is neutral (paint color and large furniture) so it is quite simple to redecorate. All I have to do is change out the decorative pieces (think accessories) and colors to create a big impact.

Switching out faux flowers (I use a lot of these in my home), wall art, knick-knacks, and pillows and blankets on the couch, makes a huge difference and it is not typically expensive.

Thrift stores, yard sales, and, of course, the Dollar Store all provide great items within your budget.  You will need to be patient though since those places don’t always have exactly what we are looking for at the time we want it.

Again, this is where your Pinterest board will come in handy.  Refer to it when you are shopping and purchase items as needed – even if you don’t want to use it today.  Consider seasons and what you might want to add to your home decor when seasons change.

Pink flowers, pumpkins, seashells, and items like that can all be put away until you are ready to use them.  This is a perfect way to spend less money and still keep up on your decorating goals.

CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS TO MAKE YOURSELF

Christmas is coming and you know what that means: DIY Christmas decorations!  Every year I come up with a new theme for my holiday decor.  Of course, I integrate items from previous years (sometimes taking things apart and remaking them in this year’s style) in order to save money.  New Christmas decorations do not need to be expensive, in fact, they can be quite affordable!

You know me, decorating on the cheap is my superpower!

Many of the projects shown below can be used either indoors or outdoors.  Be creative when you are considering how to use an item.  Can it be used on my mantle or kitchen table?  Or can it be used on the front porch?  Creating a space outside on the porch is a great way to say “welcome” to your visitors.

And isn’t that what the holidays are all about?

I have included a number of styles of decor in this post, so you will find something to love, for sure!  Use the project ideas to get creative and make whatever you want. One of my favorite things about crafting with people is seeing everyone’s projects: each different but oh-so cute!

The best way to go is to simply pick a project and start.  There is no need to get bogged down in figuring out the perfect item to make.  When it comes to Christmas project ideas, it is all fun and creativity.

EASY TO MAKE CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS

If you are new to DIY projects, rest assured that it is OK to have something end up in the trash.  There is no shame in that, and it is all part of the process.  To be 100% honest, I started a project for my living room this summer that used wood pieces, scrapbook paper, and mod podge, and I ended up throwing it away.  What I had envisioned in my mind was NOT what I created so I tossed it and started over!

There is also no reason to stick to the “look” of a project completely.  You can use these tutorials as starting points for your own ideas and creativity.  That is the whole point of crafting DIY projects: making exactly what you want and need for your home.

Getting creative and doing it your own way can also turn a project meant for the indoors into one you can use outdoors.  You may need to use some heavier-duty materials, but it can be done effectively.

EASY DIY CHRISTMAS DECOR IDEAS

Decorating for Christmas does not need to be expensive.  In fact, it can be quite cheap if you take some time to find your supplies.

Believe it or not, the thrift store often has crafting supplies at great prices.  If you have some time, it makes it easier to find good deals as opposed to needing them right now.  You can pick up red or green (or whatever color you want to use!) fabrics, wood pieces, jars, tissue paper, scrapbook paper, etc., etc., etc.  In other words, planning ahead is key!

Yard sales yield a lot of good items as well.

Shop Hobby Lobby and Michael’s when sales are going.  There is seriously no reason to pay full price at either store since their sales are so good and so frequent.

And, of course, there’s Amazon.  I am always surprised at what I find there for a great price.  A year ago, I was looking for some house-shaped wood pieces and they were over $50 on Etsy and $40 at Hobby Lobby, but I found them for $15 on Amazon.  Very high-quality and they worked perfectly for my project.

Do I need to mention your own craft stash as a place to look for supplies?  As a person who LOVES to head to Hobby Lobby for all the goods, I have to remind myself to check what I have already.  I am usually quite happy to find that I have at least a few items on hand already.

Another way to save money is to plan a crafting party with your friends.  Each person pays for their own supplies but there is savings when you buy in bulk for a lot of items.  Besides that, making Christmas decor with friends makes for a fun evening!

Organizing the linen closet in my small bathroom took some time but it was oh-so worth it!  A makeover is in order if you are looking for more space in your own closet.

I have a decent-sized bathroom but a small linen closet.  This means that I have to make the most of the room available.  I don’t like clutter and I love to create a cute space for my stuff.  If a space is organized, great. If it is cute and organized, simply amazing!

SIMPLE WAYS TO ORGANIZE YOUR LINEN CLOSET

When it comes to getting your linen closet organized, there are a few things you can do to start.  To be honest, I usually start by removing everything.  

Yes, everything.

This helps me to see what I have, what I need, and how much useful space I have.  Occasionally, when I am organizing a space in my house, I get done taking everything out and then feel overwhelmed with the mess, but it forces me to forge ahead.  This is also a great time to get rid of unnecessary items.  For me, any closet I clean out has a bunch of junk that can be given away or tossed. 

Unfortunately, clutter always accumulates in any space.

Once you see what you are working with, take the time to wipe down your shelves.  This is the time to paint them or cover them with shelf liner.

ORGANIZING TIPS FOR YOUR LINEN CLOSET

• Figure out what you need to store in the closet.  Consider each person in your home and what they need to have in the bathroom. It may seem like too many items, but once you add some containers, you will find more space to store things.
• Buy storage containers that keep everything in its place.  Several types of containers will work, including wire or wicket baskets, attachable wire shelves, and laundry hampers.  
• If you have the money, buy color coordinated goods for the bathroom simply because it looks nice.  Personally, anything that works to solve a problem AND that I like to look at is THE BEST!  I am a firm believer in adding cuteness in simple and inexpensive ways.
• Fold all linens in the same way.  Personally, I like to fold my towels in thirds, and it works with my not-so-deep shelves.  If my shelves were deeper, I would probably fold in half to make the most of my space.

I love using glass jars for linen closet organization.  Since they are see-through, they make it easy to see what you need quickly.  Glass jars are great for organizing make-up, hair ties, Qtips, and tons of other small items.  Of course, mason jars would work great for an inexpensive option!

For me, baskets are my favorite way to organize just about anything.  Not only are they useful but many baskets are decorative as well.  Shop for size as well as shape.  Write down what you need for your linen closet and head to the store to get what you need.

CREATIVE WAYS TO ORGANIZE YOUR LINEN CLOSET

A fun way to create containers and save some money is to cover cardboard boxes with contact paper or wrapping paper.  If you save your Amazon boxes, you can usually find the right size for the items you want to store.  Check grocery stores for boxes as well.

Old plastic, glass, or metal containers can be painted with chalk paint.  This saves a lot of money, and you can color coordinate your containers.

One idea is to use a paint color for each person in the house.  That way each person has their own space.  This will potentially leave you with less organizing to do down the road, as long as each person takes care of their goods.

THE BIG BENEFIT OF GRATITUDE

When life feels rough and overwhelming, gratitude might be the furthest thing from our minds.  After a breakup or divorce, it can be even further from our grasp. 

The funny thing about gratitude is that you don’t have to feel it in order to practice it. 

In fact, the practice is what brings about the feeling!

Gratitude starts like a tiny seed.  You have to tend to it carefully in the beginning and then it starts to grow.  The growth is slow but it is sure.  Gratitude has a cumulative effect over time and it starts to become a natural part of our days.

In fact, gratitude actually changes our brains.  We tend to be wired toward the negative in life and gratitude reverses that wiring.  I am not qualified to teach on this, but Positive Psychology has a great article about The Neuroscience of Gratitude and How It Affects Anxiety and Grief.  It is worth the read!

I love the phrase “gratitude practice” because it makes it clear that we need to be as consistent as we can. It is no different than “piano practice” or “baseball practice”. If we want to improve, we need to take the time to DO IT!

ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE

Adding a gratitude practice into our daily lives is key to developing a more positive outlook on life. 

Why should we care about our outlook, you ask?

Because our brains are wired to consistently confirm what it already believes.  There is a name for it: confirmation bias.

Confirmation bias is the tendency to process information by looking for, or interpreting, information that is consistent with one’s existing beliefs. 

This bias will work against us in a number of areas such as exploring new ideas about politics and the world, but it also plays out in what we believe about ourselves and about life.

I have a tendency to be a little anxious when I go to a social gathering.  In the past, I would tend to think of all the stupid things I might say, all the people that would have no interest in me, and the overwhelming unease I would feel at the gathering.  So, as you might guess, my brain picked up on all of those things because they were what I expected, so I interpreted information to mean what I believed would happen.

For a period of time, I worked with a counselor on this and she suggested that I start practicing wonder:

• I wonder what adventure might await me at this event.
• I wonder who I will meet at this event.
• I wonder what new opportunity I will find at this event.
• I wonder what new things I will learn at this event.

This took time and practice, but these days I don’t tend to rush headlong into my old catastrophic thinking.  Is every event I go to amazing and full of adventure.  No!  But I do tend to be more open to new things and how those things turn out.  I also don’t worry very much when I feel uncomfortable or have a lag in a conversation.

HOW DOES GRATITUDE HELP US?

Gratitude starts slowly turning a big ol’ ship onto a new course.  We often spend a lot of our lives in a negative thought pattern, so it takes time to see results. Once we start seeing results, we need to stay consistent in our gratitude practice, because like all things in life, we tend to revert back to old ways if we’re not careful.

Keep in mind that you are forming new neural pathways and this is something that requires focus and tenacity.  We haven’t lived thirty, forty, or fifty years of life allowing our thought patterns to be in charge without some work needed to make changes.

This is what you need to start your gratitude practice:

• Journal
• Pen

That’s it!  Feel free to use a notes app on your phone, if you like that better.

• Start small. If your life feels very heavy and frustrating right now, you will probably not be able to think of 10 major things to be grateful for right off the bat.
• Start with writing down 5 things in the morning and 5 before bed.  They can be as small as you want them to be.  Maybe you have a cute pair of socks on.  Or your cat is snuggling with you and it makes you feel loved.  Perhaps your house is clean.
• Allow yourself some time to really think and scan over your home, your heart, and your life.
• Write down whatever works for you.  No one is grading this!
• A little bonus idea is to write down how each gratitude item made you feel.
• Do this every day.

Guess what is going to start happening?  Your brain is going to start finding more things to be grateful for simply because you are looking for them.  And the cool thing?  A lot of those things have been in your life all along, you just weren’t paying attention.

This is where the magic starts happening.  The more you focus attention on the goodness in your day, the more goodness you will see.  Remember that our brain is always trying to confirm what it already believes.  You are moving from “my life really sucks” to “there is abundant beauty in my life”.

Also, not only will you see more of the goodness that already exists, you will start moving toward more goodness coming your way.  We tend to attract based on the energy that we put out into the world, so better energy is drawn into your life

Showing appreciation daily is not going to make your life perfect.  You will not be happy all the time.  Life will not cease to be a significant struggle on some days.

It will, however, bring more of the goodness in life straight into your vision.

My biggest encouragement to you is don’t give up!  Changes are not made overnight.  Sticking with a gratitude practice will bring slow changes over time, but you will start to notice that life feels lighter, brighter, and happier as you persist!
