Fandango has been running a special promotion where you get a free movie ticket for purchasing a movie ticket.

To take advantage of this, you need a Signature Visa credit card. Many of the chase and visa credit cards are Signature Visa cards, and should be labelled as such.

If you’re not sure, no problem. Just follow the instructions below to check.

1. Go to the Fandango website
2. Enter your zip code
3. Enter 1st 6 digits of your Visa card
4. If all is good, you’ll see the offer terms and what movies in your area are available.

You are limited to 1 free movie ticket per calendar month (per credit card). Offer valid until September 2010.

It even works for IMAX movies! I’ve taken advantage of this offer many times already.

Almost obsolete. But not quite.

Several times per year, I am required to receive a fax of some sort. I have no desire to own a bulky, antiquated fax machine. Kinko’s will charge you some ridiculous fee for the privilege. You want to know another option to receive faxes for free?For the past several years, I have been using the services of a company called eFax.

How does it work?

Once you sign up, they provide you with a free fax number from which people can send you a fax. When a fax gets sent to you, you will receive an email of the fax. You need to install some special software on your computer (mac compatible) which allows you to view the fax and print it if desired.

What’s the catch?

None, really. As long as you don’t need to receive lots of faxes, it’s a great service. If you want to send faxes or want to receive more than 20 pages per month or want to get a local fax number, then you must upgrade to a paid service.

Over the past years, I’ve used many, many different internet banks (GMAC, Everbank, INGDirect, Bank of America, Chase, PenFed, Presidential, HSBC, etc). Alliant Credit Union is the one that I’ve been most satisfied with.

What I like

• Rates, although not always the highest, are consistently high (Currently on 4/14/09, APY is 2.75 for savings and 2.5 for checking).
• Free ATM withdrawals across a huge ATM network
• Responsive customer service
• Free credit score
• No monthly minimum balance
• No strict requirements (i.e. use of debit cards) for the high rates
• Can fund with credit card (take advantage of credit card rewards)
• eDepositPlus (you can deposit checks be scanning them in. You never need to leave your house or mail anything!). Need to be a member for 6 months before activated.
• Simple, straightforward website
• Random perks such as Sprint Nextel 25% wireless discount

Not so hot

• $10,000 ACH transfer limit (even lower for new accounts)
• Hard pull on your credit score

How do you qualify for this credit union?

1. If you happen to live in select Chicago suburbs, you already qualify!
2. Sign up for the National PTA organization for $25. I recommend this option as you will be supporting our teachers. Once you become an Alliant member, you do NOT need to maintain your PTA membership.
3. Otherwise you might be able to sign up without the PTA. They don’t seem very strict in verifying eligibility. I signed up last year without ever having had a PTA account.

I personally think it’s a waste of our tax money to pay for everyone to have a digital TV cable box when there are more important issues to spend money on.

There are several restaurant chains that will give the birthday guest a free meal (with some stipulations).

Now, usually, friends will pay for you anyways so maybe you don’t really care. Free is free, though.

They’ll usually just ask for some kind of license verification that shows your birthday.

• Famous Dave’s Barbeque: Free meal if you sign up for their mailing list
• Red Robin: Free burger if you sign up for their mailing list

There are also plenty of  other restaurants that offer free dessert. Doesn’t hurt to ask . Hopefully you’ll be able to avoid the embarrassing birthday songs sung by the wait staff.

Epocrates is a piece of software that not only contains an easy reference for all FDA-approved drugs, but also  can serve as a reference for clinical medicine. It has a list of major diseases and conditions with a list of associated symptoms. It’s like having your own personal doctor.

Even if you aren’t medical student, if you have any interest in diseases that you or your loved ones might have, it’s great to have a reference at the tip of your hand.

For a limited time (3/17 & 3/18), you can download this iPhone app for free ($150 value). It’s supposed to be geared for medical students only, but they do not verify your status if you sign up as a medical student.

It’s a slickly designed site which allows you to easily keep track of products you might want to purchase.

It can search major online retailers (Amazon, NewEgg, etc) and display very nicely what’s a good deal (based on price history). It also gives you easy access to any reviews that might be available.

It can sometimes be a hassle to keep track of deals and knowing when the best to purchase something is. This website makes it easy and manageable.
