For a birth mother, the journey of adoption doesn’t end when the consent papers are signed. She still has emotions of grief, sadness, loss, and even guilt to deal with. Additionally, she could be facing postpartum depression from giving birth.

A caring adoption agency, like A Gift of Hope Adoptions, understands the value of professional post-adoption counseling and support tailored to each birth mother. Before placing your child for adoption, make sure the adoption coordinator you choose provides the assistance you need. The following is some advice we offer our birth mothers.

The Type of Adoption Plan You Choose Matters

There are three adoption plans: open, semi-open, and closed. The plan a birth mother chooses is meant to provide her with the post-adoption contact she wishes to have.

If you feel that having direct contact with the adoptive family from the start would help you heal, choose an open adoption plan. You exchange identifying information and agree to communicate regularly.

If you want information about how your baby is adjusting but don’t wish to identify yourself, choose a semi-open adoption. With this plan, the staff at A Gift of Hope Adoptions serves as a go-between for all communication, protecting the privacy of everyone involved.

Sometimes, birth mothers feel contact with the adoptive family is too painful. Although not as popular, you would choose a closed adoption plan. This plan entails zero contact between you and your child’s family.

Having the Support of Others Is Critical

Because adoption is so misunderstood today, some birth mothers decide to place their child without the support of others. You can feel isolated and alone.

Family members or friends may not offer the compassion you need. They may say, “You made the decision. It’s time to move on.” Or “Why didn’t you want your baby?” Even using outdated terms like “giving up your baby” can be painful to hear.

You need and deserve personalized support from someone who understands the emotions you are feeling. At A Gift of Hope Adoptions, we’ll counsel with you for as long as you need us and provide information about others who can provide additional counseling support.

We’ll also refer you to many birth mother support groups, including BraveLove.org, Adoption Savvy, and Building Grace.

If you are struggling with postpartum depression as well, we recommend getting assistance from Postpartum Support International.

Selecting the Adoptive Parents Provides Comfort

Making an adoption plan for your child is a life-changing decision. It takes courage and a lot of love to place your baby with others. By carefully selecting the right couple who will raise your child, you’ll find comfort knowing you made the right choice.

We’ll listen carefully to you to find the parents that fit your hopes and dreams for your child. We have several families currently waiting to adopt. If you don’t see the right couple here, we’ll find them for you.

Let A Gift of Hope Adoptions Help You

If you are an expectant mother or birth mother considering placing your baby for adoption, let us help you. Your overall mental and physical health is important to us. We’ll walk with you every step of the way.

All of our services are free. Please fill out our confidential contact form, chat with us online, or call us at (888) 564-HOPE (4673) for more information.

Figuring out how to handle an unexpected pregnancy is filled with mixed emotions: uncertainty, hope, grief, love, and even fear. Every woman’s situation is unique, which is why personalized care is essential.

No one should have to sort through these feelings alone, and the quality of support you receive can shape your experience in meaningful ways. At A Gift of Hope Adoptions, adoption offers hope for everyone involved.

Let us provide the compassionate and personalized support you deserve at this critical time in your life. Contact us at (888) 564-HOPE (4673).

Why Compassionate Support Matters

When choosing to place your baby for adoption, you are making one of the biggest decisions of your life. An expectant mother considering adoption should receive thorough counseling, a complete understanding of the adoption process, the ability to make decisions for her baby, and compassionate care as she walks through the entire experience.

She may find that family and friends do not understand or support her choice, so care that is free of manipulation or coercion is vital. She also needs to know that she can change her mind at any time until she signs a general (or specific) consent to Termination of Parental Rights and Adoption.

Adoption today is built around choice. A Gift of Hope Adoptions offers several plans so you can choose one that aligns with your comfort level and future goals. Each plan is flexible and tailored to your specific needs, rather than a predetermined template.

The Support You Can Expect to Receive From A Gift of Hope Adoptions

First, we’ll take time to hear your story and learn what is important to you. If you wish to move forward with adoption, we’ll explain the process and the three plans you can choose from: open, semi-open, and closed.

Here are some of the other services you can expect to receive from A Gift of Hope Adoptions:

Someone to listen as you process your feelings and concerns.

A full explanation of adoption and state laws.

Determining the best plan for you, which includes the amount of communication you wish to have with your child and their adoptive family in the future.

Matching services that help you choose the right family to raise your child. There is a family for your child regardless of your situation.

Facilitating a meeting between you and the adoptive family you’ve chosen.

Guidance throughout the pregnancy, including prenatal care and assistance with other pregnancy-related expenses.

Childbirth assistance, as we work closely with the hospital staff.

Post-placement support, should you choose adoption.

Having a knowledgeable, caring advocate lets you focus on what matters most: making a decision rooted in your values and hopes for the future.

You Deserve the Best Care

By choosing to place your child for adoption, you are making one of the most selfless and courageous decisions for their future and your own. Let the caring counselors at A Gift of Hope Adoptions walk this road with you.

Our services are completely free. Fill out our convenient contact form, chat with us online, or call or text us. We’re here to support you.

Choosing to place your child for adoption is a deeply personal and, often, difficult decision. You need a strong support network to help you through the process. Getting that personal, one-on-one support is one of the many reasons you should work with a smaller adoption agency.

We are a non-profit, licensed child-placing agency. Because A Gift of Hope Adoptions is small, we offer compassionate care to everyone in the adoption process.

If you are an expectant mother considering adoption but aren’t sure who to talk to, please contact us. We welcome the opportunity to answer your questions and get to know you.

You Can Trust Us

Sadly, some adoption agencies operate only by the numbers. They want to complete as many adoptions as possible, no matter what. These agencies pressure an expectant mother or manipulate her into making an adoption plan.

At A Gift of Hope Adoptions, we make a special effort to see and hear you. Your situation is unique, and we want to help you determine if placing your child for adoption is the right choice.

In a recent survey of birth mothers, the top two reasons why some had more satisfaction with their adoptions were, first, not feeling coerced and, second, receiving complete, accurate information about the adoption process.

We promise that we will never manipulate, coerce, or pressure you to choose adoption. With our agency, you aren’t just a number; you become a friend.

You Get Personalized Counseling

Concerns, questions, and overwhelming emotions don’t always flare up during regular business hours. Having the ability to speak to someone 24/7 is vital.

At A Gift of Hope Adoptions, you have direct access to someone who knows and supports you at all times. You can be confident that throughout the adoption process and beyond, there will always be a trusted friend that you can speak with.

Since we are smaller, we devote quality time to each expectant mother or birth mother to determine whether parenting or adoption is the right plan. You will receive personalized counseling for as long as you need it.

We’ll Handle the Details

There is a lot to consider as you move forward with your adoption plan. You can select the future you hope your child will have by choosing their adoptive family. We’ll talk with you about your desires for your child and find profiles of potential adoptive couples you may want to consider.

You can also choose the type of adoption plan that feels best for you. There are three: open, semi-open, and closed. We’ll help you formulate your plan and put it in writing.

We will also see that you get no-cost medical care, including childbirth, and help coordinate your plan for introducing your child to their adoptive parents with the hospital and staff.

Contact A Gift of Hope Adoptions

Are you ready to build a relationship with an adoption agency that listens and cares? If so, contact A Gift of Hope Adoptions.

Every adoption situation is unique and personal. Today, expectant mothers and birth mothers have more choices. You have control over the process.

For your future and your child’s, it’s vital to take your time and create a personalized adoption plan. At A Gift of Hope Adoptions, we work closely with you to ensure you understand the process and your choices.

We will prioritize your desires first. Let’s take a closer look at the five steps to create a personalized adoption plan.

Step One: Choosing the Adoptive Family

As you choose to place your child for adoption, your biggest decision will be selecting the family that will raise them. We will ask you to make a list of the “gotta haves” in your adoptive family.

Do they need to live in a particular area? Should they already have other children, or do you want your child to be their firstborn? What about pets? Hobbies? Religion? What’s important to you should be important to them.

Picking the right adoptive couple is your first step in personalizing your plan. View some of our current waiting families.

Step Two: Choosing Your Adoption Plan

You will also need to decide how much contact you want with them. Although this can be difficult to determine at first, you can always adapt your plan later. There are three adoption plans to choose from: open, semi-open, and closed.

Open adoption means you exchange some identifying information with the couple you’ve chosen. You can share full names, phone numbers, addresses, emails, etc. This plan lets you connect with them directly.

Semi-open adoption lets you communicate with the adoptive family, but all contact first goes through A Gift of Hope Adoptions. This plan provides you with a little more privacy.

Closed adoption offers no communication. The courts seal all adoption records, and you have no further contact with your child or their adoptive family.

Step Three: Meeting the Adoptive Couple Before Giving Birth

If you select an open or semi-open plan, you can decide when and how you wish to meet the adoptive couple you’ve chosen. Many expectant mothers want to begin a relationship with the adoptive couple they’ve selected immediately. It assures you that you’ve made the right decision and allows you to begin building a relationship.

Step Four: Arranging Your Hospital Plan

We will work closely with you, your hospital, and your physician to ensure you receive the quality care you deserve. After giving birth, you can choose how much time you want to spend with your baby at the hospital.

In Missouri, you cannot sign any legal documents, such as a “Consent to Termination of Parental Rights and Adoption,” for 48 hours after giving birth. Until that time, you are the legal parent of your child.

Your personalized delivery plan will also include how you want to introduce your child to their adoptive parents. Do you wish to have pictures taken with them at the hospital? Would you prefer they come after you leave? You decide.

Step Five: Ongoing Counseling

Some birth mothers find immediate comfort in their adoption decision and require little counseling. Others struggle emotionally and require more. You determine your need for counseling and connection with other birth mothers.

We will facilitate and refer you to the type of counseling you desire. We can also put you in touch with other birth mother groups for support and healing.

Let A Gift of Hope Adoptions Assist You

Choosing to place your child for adoption is a deeply personal decision. No one but you can decide. We won’t pressure or manipulate you into making this choice.

If you would like more information on creating your personalized adoption plan, please contact us. You can fill out our confidential online contact form, chat with us online, or call or text us at (888) 564-HOPE. Let’s build the perfect plan together.

Choosing to place a child for adoption is like a roller coaster of emotions. You start slowly contemplating the idea, and as your pregnancy progresses, the emotions get more and more challenging. You feel layers of grief, pride, loss, and joy.

The team at A Gift of Hope Adoptions understands it takes great courage and strength to make an adoption plan. The ups and downs are real, and we will be with you every step of the way. Adoption is never a one-time decision. It is a lifetime relationship.

Here are three ways to help you navigate the ups and downs as you build that relationship.

You Need a Strong Support Network

The National Council for Adoption, along with Opt Institute and BraveLove, published a study in 2022. The study found that parents and adoption professionals provided the most significant amount of support.

Having the support of those closest to you is vital. Sadly, the study also found that birth mothers still experience a great deal of stigma regarding their adoption decision.

There are several support groups that you can join. Meeting with other women who have decided to place their children for adoption is extremely helpful. Consider joining one of these:

BraveLove

Birth Parent Support Alliance

Open Adoption and Family Services

Building Grace Helping Women

Abiding Love Charities

At A Gift of Hope Adoptions, we can also connect you with local adoption groups.

Are You Open to an Open Adoption?

It seems impossible at first. How can you have a relationship with the couple that will be raising your baby? The key to a successful open or semi-open adoption is for everyone to focus on what’s best for your child.

Open adoption often works best when everyone takes time to build trust and communicate well. It may not be easy for the adults, but research suggests it’s best for the child they share.

Most birth mothers find comfort in having a connection with their child. They see that others can love their child just as much as they do. As trust grows between the biological and adoptive families, they can enjoy the common bond of being an essential part of their child’s life.

Know That Whatever You Feel, Your Feelings Are Valid

Every emotion you feel is valid. Whether it’s grief, a sense of loss, confidence, or hope, you have permission to experience them all. Your adoption is unique to you.

You have the freedom to acknowledge those emotions and express them if necessary. Like any form of grief, it is a process. You cannot change overnight, so don’t put that pressure on yourself.

Your emotional health matters. Finding safety and security with people who have gone through the adoption process is necessary for your healing. If necessary, seek professional help from a counselor skilled in adoption-related mental health issues.

We Are Here for You

If you are considering adoption or have already placed a child and need to talk with someone, we are here for you. A Gift of Hope Adoptions is a fully licensed adoption agency serving women throughout the area.

We understand the complexities of adoption. If you are experiencing the ups and downs of emotions due to an adoption decision, contact us.

Schedule an appointment by completing our confidential online contact form or calling us at (888) 564-HOPE (4673). Let us know how we can help you today.

Planning for the future is never easy. While making an adoption plan for your child, it’s hard to envision the future. Do you need more privacy? Are you hoping to visit them regularly? Are you not sure what you’re comfortable with?

Not knowing what you need is completely understandable. It’s hard to look one, three, five, or ten years ahead.

Adoption plans can be modified based on the relationship between the biological and adoptive families, but adoption requires trust and transparency. As that grows between families, you can reevaluate your plan as your child gets older.

Let’s review the adoption plans and how you might modify them in the future. If you have questions about adoption, please do not hesitate to contact A Gift of Hope Adoptions at (888) 564-HOPE (4673).

What Are the Three Adoption Plans?

The three plans are Open, Semi-Open, and Closed. The plan you choose determines the amount of contact you have with your child and their adoptive family. Choose the plan you are most comfortable with at the time, and select a family that wants the same level of contact.

Open Adoption

An open adoption plan allows for the most contact between the birth family and the adoptive family. Together, you decide the type of communication you want.

You can exchange all identifying information, such as full names, addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses. Or you can select specific ways to contact one another, such as phone numbers or email addresses.

Either way, you have direct contact with one another from the beginning.

Semi-Open Adoption

A semi-open adoption is also known as a mediated adoption. It offers more privacy while still allowing contact between the birth mother and the adoptive family.

The only identifying information that’s usually shared is first names. You communicate with one another, but all contact goes through A Gift Of Hope Adoptions first.

For instance, the adoptive family sends us a letter and photos. We forward that on to the birth mother to maintain privacy. With a semi-open plan, we can even arrange phone calls and set up in-person meetings while protecting your privacy.

Closed Adoption

A closed adoption provides complete anonymity. You have no future contact with the adoptive family or your child. A very small number of adoptions today are completely closed.

A birth mother may feel this plan provides the emotional closure that she needs to move forward. Or, she desires complete privacy due to difficult relationships.

How Can I Change My Plan?

Many birth mothers and adoptive couples begin their relationship with a semi-open adoption. They have contact with one another, but until they truly get to know one another, their identifying information remains private.

As that trust builds, they can choose to share identifying information and contact one another directly. Select a family that is willing to consider an open plan once trust is built.

If you choose a closed adoption but wish to have contact in the future, our team can contact the adoptive family and make your request. No matter what plan you choose, communication with your child and their adoptive family is determined by what’s best for the child.

Want More Information?

Please contact us if you would like more information about placing your child for adoption. Talking with us costs you nothing. We can review your situation and help determine if adoption is the right decision for you.

Fill out our confidential online Contact Form or call us. Let us help you plan for your future.

Everyone in the adoption process hopes to be known personally. You never want to be just a case number. Whether you’re a birth mother placing your child for adoption or an adoptive couple receiving a child, you need to be seen and heard.

Being individually known is one of the many benefits of working with a smaller adoption agency, especially after placement. The process isn’t over when everyone signs on the dotted line. Adoption is an ongoing, loving, life-affirming relationship that must be nurtured. Let’s look at some of the benefits.

What Are Some of the Benefits?

Adoption is a huge transition for everyone. Birth mothers deal with the loss and subsequent need for healing, while adoptive parents deal with caring for a little one who is new to them. Support for both is vital.

Birth Mother Support

If a birth mother chose an open or semi-open adoption plan, the agency helps her and the adoptive family arrange communication and possibly visits. Most agencies require the adoptive couple to send letters and photos to birth parents for a specified amount of time. As the birth mother receives these, she may need to process her thoughts and feelings with the adoption counselor. By working with a smaller agency, she gets personal post-adoption counsel and emotional support.

An agency links a birth mother with local and national support groups either personally or through Zoom calls.

Every birth mother receives assistance with finding local resources for counseling, postpartum medical care, life skills, educational opportunities, and more.

A smaller agency can connect local birth mothers with one another for support and encouragement.

Adoptive Parent Support

The adoptive family receives counsel and education on ways they can respect and honor their birth mothers and fathers.

An agency provides information for community resources, informational meetings, and adoptive parent support groups.

Adoptive families receive education for dealing with the complexities their adopted child may experience. As their child grows, a smaller agency can connect the family with support groups and other adoptees.

When parents adopt a child with special needs, the agency can connect the family with local resources to help them raise their child.

How Does A Gift of Hope Adoptions Assist Post Placement?

As a smaller adoption agency, the team at A Gift of Hope Adoptions provides personal attention to everyone in the adoption process. We work closely with each expectant mother, birth mother, and potential adoptive couple to see that they receive the support and instruction they need.

We’re available at any time to counsel, comfort, and answer questions that arise. Your relationship with us is never short-term. It’s an ongoing journey throughout your child’s life.

If you would like to know more about placing your child for adoption or potentially adopting a child, please contact A Gift of Hope Adoptions. Fill out our confidential online contact form or call us at (888) 564-HOPE (4673).

Some situations in life can only be understood and discussed with others who have been through the same experience.
Several national organizations help birth mothers find one another, and we can put you in touch with birth mothers we have worked with locally. Here are a few of the organizations you can contact:

BraveLove

By their very name, BraveLove recognizes the strength and courage it takes to place your child for adoption. They offer multiple resources for birth parents and can connect you with groups in your area.

BraveLove provides specific resources for birth mothers, including information about support groups, retreats, area dinners, and recommendations for books, podcasts, and more. Read and hear other birth moms tell their stories. They even offer a space where you can share your own experience.

Postpartum Support International

Postpartum Support International (PSI) recognizes the unique emotions a birth mother feels in relation to those who choose to parent. They understand that post-adoption depression is very real.

In addition to offering mental health resources, they provide information on support groups, peer mentorships, and a free helpline. You can even enter a Zoom online group anonymously.

Adoption Savvy

Adoption Savvy provides resources for everyone in the adoption triad. They serve adult adoptees, birth families, and adoptive families.

They offer individual counseling and online coaching, birth mother support groups, workshops, and retreats. Listen to the Birth Moms Real Talk podcast to get a sense of the encouragement they can offer.

A Gift of Hope Adoptions Can Help You
