~Tell us a little about yourself, your awesome site Basewives and your cute blog, Ashley's Blog!

I am a 25 year old mother to 4 wonderful little boys. I love living in Hawaii. Hobbies of mine include scrap

booking and photography. I love capturing all the fun moments with my little guys. Basewives is a site I started to give military families a convenient way to buy and sell their items online that is also catered to their base. My blog is just something extra I started as a way to help other spouses with tips I have learned along the way and share other ideas I have.

~ How long have you been apart of the military lifestyle?

My husband has been in the Marines for just over 3 years.

~What is your favorite thing about being a Marine Wife and what is your least favorite thing?

My favorite thing about being a Marine wife are all the different people you meet and experiences you go through. I never knew how strong I really was until I was forced to not have a choice but to be strong. I have been through the birth of 3 children without my husband, countless challenging situations and have come out of it all proud of myself and the job I have done. My least favorite thing about being a Marine wife is obviously the times of separation from my husband.

~ How do you come up with material/content for Ashley's Blog, What inspires you?

The material and content that I have used for the blog are just things I do in my everyday life. Things that have helped me through tough times of separation, recipes I enjoy and fun crafts to do with kids.

~ Name some of the bloggers whom you look up to and why?

I have two blogs that I follow, the marathon mom and Maria's eat clean journey. Both women are inspiring and have overcome their own issues and challenges with flying colors.

~How did you come up with the idea for Basewives/Ashley's Blog?

I came up with the idea for Basewives from some of the groups on facebook where people where able to buy and sell on my base. The initial idea was great but the execution through using facebook was poor and had alot of flaws. Also having the groups linked on facebook left a lot of room for drama and unnecessary conflicts. I wanted a site where it truly was about buying and selling but also a place where there is a forum for questions and a way of networking with other families on base.

~Why do you think its so important for there to be a site like Basewives?

I think a site like Basewives is important because being able to buy used from a garage sale is a wonderful thing for people who maybe can't afford to always buy things full price and brand new. Having the convenience of the internet while still maintaining the comfort of only buying from people on base creates a safer, more efficient environment for everyone.

~What types of ideas and goals do you have for Basewives?

I would love to be able to expand with Basewives. Include a section for every individual base. I would love to be able to help promote military spouses home businesses and help out families moving to a new area.

~What types of ideas and goals do you have for Ashley's Blog?

For my blog, I would just love to be able to help one person. One person maybe find a better way to do something or a fun activity to spend time with their kids doing.

~What makes you different then the other yard sale sites out there?

I think what people will see that makes Basewives different than other sites is the personal factor, it is ran and maintained by a fellow military spouse and without all the complications of facebook groups.

~What is your ideal audience for Basewives?

My ideal audience for Basewives are people like me! Spouses and moms going through the everyday challenges of life and being apart of the military.

DIY Craft Desk

I have always wanted a cute craft desk to do projects and to cut my fabric not on the floor, but most of the ones in the stores are hugely to expensive for my wallet.

So my husband promised that when we moved into our new housing on base he would build me a fabulous one.

If you follow my blog regularly, a few weeks ago, I blogged about how we finally got new base housing.

Finally after 2 months of PTA's, training and other adventures, my husband finally had time to finish my craftdesk!

I am so excited to show you and now you can find out how we made it so you can make one too!

Materials:

♥ Book shelves (we used 3 of these from Walmart)

♥ Piece of wood cut to the dimentions of your shelves after assembled and organized the way you want them- (ours was cut at 35 1/4 x 54 3/8 inches)

♥ L brackets and screws- 10

♥ Paint (if you want to paint your board)

♥ Paint Brushes

Walmart- $35

Tutorial:

First, we built our shelves as stated by the manufactures instructions.

Then, we cut our board to the size that we wanted to be. I wanted mine to hang over the edges a bit so I cut it a bit longer and wider then the shelves were.

Next, I painted my wooden board. We actually found the piece of wood on a walk, that someone put out for bulk trash day. But it had a few imperfections and the color I wanted to paint it was a bright color so I ended up priming my board first, but if you have a piece of wood that is perfect or a color that is dark you won't need to prime. I ended up painting about a whole pint of paint over the board. It was about 7 full coats.

After the paint was good and dry for about a day, we attached the shelves all together using the L-Brackets on the top and bottom of the center shelf. Next we then attached the board to the tops of the shelves on each corner and then in the middle of the center shelf. (See picture above)

That's it!

Super easy and super cute!

The table is very solid and will be easy to take a part and put back together when we move again at the end of the year.

My New Craftroom/Studio!

These past few months have been filled with all sorts of new things!

But the newest thing to happen in last few weeks was that we finally got new base housing and got to move out of our old falling apart apartment.

Into a beautiful new house!

Which means I got to redo my CRAFTROOM!!!

So I thought I would share!

Its still a work in progress and I am still waiting on the table that my Hubby promises to make me (if he ever stops going to training every 3 months) but here it is so far:

Some shop changes...

If you have been following my blog and shop for a while, you know that I am a Marine Corps wife, and about a year ago when I started this blog, one of the first projects I did was a fun wreath using my husbands cammies. (If you are just learning of my blog you can catch that post here: Cammie Wreath...USMC Style!) Since then I began selling them in my shop and on the base that we currently live on. It's been one of my most profitable, most purchased items, but if you have been following my blog in the last few weeks you know that I had a bit of a stealing issue with my wreaths and a past customer. (If you need to catch up on that too, lol, you can find it here: A form of stealing??) When I started my shop I really didn't think that this was the item that would be my shops identity. About 6 years ago I began making frames, and actually back then had a small Etsy shop under the name of "Frame by Frame". At that time I didn't realize the hard work it took to get a small shop like that off the ground and didn't really sell many frames other then to my family and friends. I shut down my Etsy shop and just created for my friends and family when they needed frames for special occasions.

Fast forward 5 years and I found myself in Hawaii, with a lot of time on my hands on weekends and after work, as my husband was gone quite often for training as they were getting ready to go on deployment to Afghanistan. I always loved to craft and my new house was being to look a little to much like an episode of Hoarders, only the DIY/Craft version! So, I decided to start this blog as a way to justify my creations lol, and a short time later reopened my shop. This time, I began selling anything I made, but later narrowed it down to just frames, countdown blocks and then military inspired wreaths.

As you know from earlier, my wreaths really took off.

But it wasn't my true passion.

Don't get me wrong I like making the wreaths but I miss the creativity that I had making frames.

So, while taking some time off from making creations for my shop while I had surgery, and then making a frame for a family member, I did some thinking.

I have decided to refocus my shop to my frames again and do it the right way. I will still offer my wreaths on request but I am going back to doing what I enjoy and what makes me happy.

I love my frames!

I think they are super cute! You don't see them all over the market..yet, and I believe in them!

A form of stealing?- A Little Advice, Please!

I struggled with this all day on whether or not to post this.

(This is quite long...sorry, in advance!)

I am a bit bummed and a little mad and I am not sure just what to do about this.

I'm hoping my bloggie followers can help me make sense of this and give me some advice.

A little background info:

In case you didn't know I have a small shop, called A Girl and Her Craftbox Designs.

I currently have an Etsy shop, but because of the military aspect of it, being frames, countdown blocks and military inspired wreaths, I mostly sell from my facebook fan page, while I try to decide on whether I should open a store front else where or a web page all together.

But that's not what this is about...entirely....

The story:

It all started back in April of 2011, when my shop was relatively new. I began promoting my small business on my the base that we live, since my wreaths are military inspired and many of my countdown blocks are too. Within our base we have quite a few facebook pages that are somewhat similar to garage sales but are a good way to get your name out there for your small business too. I decided to post my link to my shop on there and after a few days I got a few customers, one of which, became one of my best customers, so I thought.

She purchased a cammie wreath, and then about a week later purchased a deployment block set. She later then purchased another cammie wreath in another color and another one of my items. After that I didn't really hear from her again, until about 3 weeks ago.

While I was home for Christmas I came across some supplies that I decided I wanted to use to make some new cammie wreaths in a heart shape and sell them in my shop, so I purchased what I could get. When we returned to Hawaii, I started getting fabric together and put together two designs that I wanted to offer in my shop:

About a week after I posted the pictures and began promoting them in my shop, this said customer contacted me again, this time to ask a question about where I found the supplies for the wreaths. She stated that her mom was looking for something like this for a projects she was doing. I politely wrote back and told her I found them at home at a specialty store and that I have tried to Google them but can't seem to find them else where. That was the end of the conversation until last week.

I decided to offer one of wreaths I had made above in a bidding war on my facebook page, as a grand re-opening of my new blog and facebook designs and started the price of it off at 50% off. When this said customer began bidding on it I didn't think anything of it, and when she won, I knew she really liked my products in the past and was huge supporter (or so I thought) so I was happy for her. This past Monday she came to pick up the wreath, and if you have ever purchased any of my products you know, I always send my products with a Thank You Card, a discount coupon, and promotional materials. Within the Thank You card, I tell all my customers that I would love to hear what they think of their item, good or bad on my facebook wall. On Tuesday, I got a message from the customer that she couldn't tag my facebook in the picture since facebook keeps changing the rules for pages. I told her to just post the pic to my wall instead, of which she misunderstood, and instead posted to my personal page by tagging me personally.

No big deal, I thought, I'll just share it from there.

A few minutes later my bff, asked me if I had read the comments on the facebook post on my personal wall from her friends. I said "No, why?", of which she stated, "UM YOU NEED TO CHECK IT OUT NOW!"

So I went to my personal page and checked it and at that moment realized my worst fear...she was buying my items, to take apart and recreate for her friends for money. I didn't know what to do! I could feel my blood boiling and sat there shaking. Obviously, she didn't realize that I could now see her conversation with her friends about how she now knows how to create this one too and as soon as she finds out where to get the supplies she will make them for all her friends.

I was so upset I woke my husband up at 1 am (yes I was still up working on designing some new promotional items and business cards) and told him tearfully what had happened. Of course this was kind of dumb as he has to get up everyday at 4:30 am to go work out with his shop everyday and he tends to be a crazy sleeper. He basically told me Who cares Erin? and rolled back over.

(Of course the next morning when I was still in a bad mood and he asked why, I stated I told you why at 1 AM, of which, he looked at me like I was nuts, and had no recollection of that prior convo. After I told him again he was much more supportive.)

I went back to the couch and thought, well I am not gonna go crazy and scream at this girl as it will just cause more problems and will probably just fuel her even more to recreate my items for profit. So after one of her friends stated "OOOO I want one" I nicely said back, " If your interested I would love to make you one! Come check me out at A Girl and Her Craftbox Designs" and left it at that!

But I am still really mad about this.

I totally understand the concept of competition, but I don't think it should be at my expense since its not true competition when you are stealing my design item by item. I never said I was gonna be rich from my shop or that I haven't seen something similar before but do you think that's fair to purchase someone's items to take apart to learn how to make it, for your own gain?

What would you do?

Do you think that's a form of stealing?

I'm so confused and would love some advice!

Hi! I'm Erin!

This blog is about:

My life, my shop, where I find my inspirations, DIY craftiness, tutorials, and just things I care about and want to share.

I have a small shop called A Girl and Her Craftbox Designs:
My shop is filled with products designed to bring style and function to any home, all while celebrating life's little adventures. Specializing in Military Inspired Wreaths, Stylish, Customizable Frames, Mini Tree's and Countdown Blocks.

When I am not creating, I am a Marine Corp Wife, and an animal mommy to my English Bulldog Daisy Mae! We just moved from beautiful Hawaii, where we were stationed for the past 4 years, back to our home in the suburbs of Chicago, where I was born and raised.

I began my love of crafting as a small child always making craft projects, such as coloring, rock jewelry, fashion plates, weaving potholders and my earliest memory of making secret potions with my brother by using soap and my mom's perfume. I didn't really fall in love with my true passion of crafting until I was in my freshman year of college. It all started out with me just making scrapbooks for each year of college and then became a full blown addiction!

Other things about Erin:

Boys with tattoo's (I do not like sleeves) but will never get one myself because I am afraid of needles! My husband, however, has the one whole side of his chest tattooed and I conspire to draw faces on the peoples faces when he is asleep!

I love to watch re-runs of One Tree Hill on Saturday and Sunday mornings...I secretly wish I had a smile like Brooke!

I love potatoes in any form! If the world blew up and the only thing for us to survive on was potatoes I would be just fine!

I am super allergic to peanut butter, and my husband loves it to death. Pretty sure I am gonna die when my children take after him and want to eat PB and J's everyday!

I am a very picky eater and will not eat anything that wiggles such as jello, pudding, yogurt, eggs, oatmeal, and gravy with meat.

I do not like people who like to start drama and one up you.

I know I have been way slacking on my blogging lately, but its been a way busy last 6 months!

Here is what happened:

My shop took off

my husband was deployed

and then he came home

I had a mini medical crisis that is still on going

and

I went home for X-mas to Chicago.

BUT I AM BACK!

I am having my blog, facebook and logo totally redone by the fabulous:
