Renting a car in Greece can be one of the best ways to explore the country’s hidden beaches, mountain villages, and island roads at your own pace, but it also comes with a few quirks you’ll want to know before you book.

From insurance details and driving rules to choosing the right vehicle for narrow village streets, this guide breaks down everything you need to confidently rent a car and enjoy a smooth, stress-free road trip through Greece.

Benefits of Renting a Car in Greece

One of the biggest benefits is flexibility. You can set your own schedule, stop at viewpoints whenever you want, and reach beaches, mountain villages, and archaeological sites that buses often don’t go to. This is especially useful on the islands and in rural areas.

Even on the Greek islands, you will want to consider renting a car. Bus schedules can be limited on islands, and they do not always go to the places you want to visit. Not only can you visit any area you like, but you can also do so on your own schedule.

Public transportation on the mainland is trickier since the bus operators are all different companies, so finding out how to get from one town to another in advance is difficult. There are also places that are not served by the KTEL bus companies. Renting a car in Greece will let you make the most of your vacation time.

In the summer, having a rental car means you can travel in comfort with the air conditioning set to your preferred temperature. Many times, I have been on a Greek bus in the summer and sweating because the air conditioning wasn’t on or wasn’t working well enough.

Choosing the Right Car Rental Company

Greece has many options for renting a car. All the major car rental companies are represented here, including Europcar, Hertz, Sixt, Avis, and Budget. There are also many local car rental companies. I have personally used both local companies and international brands here, and both have been excellent. Some international companies contract out to locals, so don’t be surprised if you end up with a local contract.

Another option is to use Discover Cars, which is a car rental aggregator. They have gathered all the rental car options and will present you with the best rate available. There are also independent reviews for the car rental agencies, so you can pick the right one for you. I used it for my trip to Thessaloniki, and it was so easy. I was driving within 30 minutes of picking up my bags.

Not all major brands have a branch in your location or contract with a local company, so it is important to read reviews of the local company before booking.

Popular Car Rental Locations

Almost every major city and popular island with an airport will have a car rental agency. In Athens, you can find car rental agencies at the airport and in the city center. However, I do not recommend renting a car in the city center of Athens, as driving and parking are difficult there. If you are driving out of Athens, don’t pick up the car until you are leaving, even if this means going back to the airport.

Other locations for renting a car that are popular are Heraklion, Chania, Santorini, and Mykonos. Not only will you be able to rent cars at the airports in these locations, but you can also rent them at the ports on these islands. Even the smaller islands will likely have a car rental agency at the port. However, a few will not have car rentals, so you will have to ask your hotel for advice on renting a car.

Some car rental agencies in Greece will meet you at the port or airport to pick up and drop off the car, especially if their offices are not near the port or airport. A few charge a fee for this, but some do not. I have found the fee worth it since I would have to pay to get there anyway.

Understanding Car Categories in Greece

Photo by Hale . on Pexels.com

In the larger areas, you should be able to rent any kind of vehicle you might need, from compact cars to passenger vans. However, keep in mind that if you are coming from the US, compact cars are very compact and often have room for only a few people and little luggage. If you will have more than two people and full-sized luggage, check that the car you choose will hold your group AND their luggage.

Also, make sure you book the right transmission for you. I cannot drive a manual transmission, so I need to rent an automatic transmission. While this has become less of an issue in recent years, some places (particularly small islands) may have limited automatic options or availability.

In my opinion, renting an automatic will be easier for you if you are driving in the mountains or on and off a ferry. Less shifting will mean less distraction. However, some automatic compact cars lack sufficient power to climb a steep mountain road. Make sure you check a small car’s horsepower before you rent it. (Ask me how I know!)

Essential Requirements for Renting a Car

Obviously, you will need a valid driver’s license to rent a car in Greece. However, you may also need an international driver’s license. In Greece, you do not need one if you have a valid license from the EU, EEA, UK, US, Japan, Canada, Australia, and a few others. This is a relatively recent change, so some places are still asking for it. You might want to play it safe.

Age Requirements and Surcharges

The legal age to rent a car in Greece is 21 years old. However, many car rental companies have their own policies and will require the driver to be 23 or 25 years old. It is best to check the company on their policies. Some will also charge a young driver fee if you are between 21-25.

In addition, some companies will not rent to senior drivers. I have seen the maximum age range from 70 to 75 and up. Some local vendors in Greece do not have this policy, so if you are older, you may want to check with them.

Car Rental Insurance Options

Greece requires mandatory insurance, which should be included in the rent fee. This covers the mandatory third-party liability insurance. You may want to consider opting to purchase more insurance when renting the car, which would cover the Collision Damage Waiver. It would cover any damage you incur, minus the deductible.

There are optional add-ons, such as Super Collision Damage Waiver, that would also cover the deductible, theft protection, and Personal Accident Insurance.

The cost of these additional coverage options is determined by the rental company, so make sure you ask how much they are. Sometimes you can book them when making the reservation, and sometimes when picking up the car.

One of my credit cards offers car insurance on rental cars, so check with your credit cards and your own car insurance to see if a rental car might be covered. This might save you some money.

Driving Tips and Regulations in Greece

In Greece, they drive on the right side of the road, with the steering wheel on the left side of the car. If you are visiting from countries like the UK, Australia, or New Zealand, it can take a little time to adjust. Pay extra attention when turning at intersections, entering roundabouts, and pulling out after parking, especially during your first day driving.

The legal blood alcohol limit in Greece is lower than in many countries, so it is best to avoid drinking if you plan to drive. Police checkpoints are common, particularly during holidays and summer weekends. Seatbelts are required for all passengers, and using a mobile phone while driving without a hands-free device is prohibited.

Many major highways in Greece are toll roads, including routes between Athens, Thessaloniki, and the Peloponnese. Most toll booths accept cash and cards, although carrying some small cash is still a good idea. Tolls can add up during longer road trips, so be sure to factor them into your budget. Make sure to enter the lanes made for cars without a toll tag.

Driving in Greece can feel more aggressive than in some other countries. Local drivers may speed, overtake frequently, or tailgate on narrower roads. On mountain roads and islands, you may also encounter sharp turns, scooters, goats, or cars parked unexpectedly along the roadside. Drive defensively, stay alert, and do not feel pressured to match the speed of local drivers.

If you plan to drive in Athens, try to avoid peak traffic times, especially weekday mornings and late afternoons. Traffic congestion can be stressful for first-time visitors, and parking in central neighborhoods is often difficult. Many travelers find it easier to pick up their rental car after leaving Athens or before heading to the mainland or islands.

Road Rules and Speed Limits

Speed limits in Greece are marked, but it is still important to know the standard limits before driving. In most urban and residential areas, the speed limit is typically 50 km/h (31 mph). On rural roads, the limit is usually around 90 km/h (56 mph), while on major highways and motorways it ranges from 110–130 km/h (68–81 mph).

Be aware that speed cameras and police checks are common on highways, particularly during busy holiday periods. Road conditions can also change quickly, especially in mountainous regions or on smaller islands where roads may be narrow or uneven. The speed limit often changes quickly as well.

Greek driving customs may feel different from what you are used to. Drivers sometimes run yellow lights, and it is not unusual to hear horns used as warnings rather than out of anger. In Athens, drivers are quick to honk at lights turning green as well, but don’t worry it is more of a “Hey, it turned green FYI!”

On multi-lane roads, slower vehicles often move partially onto the shoulder to allow faster cars to pass. While this may seem surprising at first, it is a common practice throughout Greece. Don’t feel pressure to maintain a high speed, pull over, and they will go around, even on a two-lane road!

Parking Information

Parking rules in Greece can vary by city, but many urban areas use color-coded parking zones. White lines generally indicate free parking, blue zones are usually paid parking for visitors, and yellow lines mean parking is prohibited. In some cities, residents-only parking zones are also enforced.

Parking in Athens

The color-coded zones are different in Athens. The blue zones are paid parking, which is usually hourly. The white zone is for residents only. The yellow lines are prohibited. Kolonaki is mostly residents only and they do ticket there.

If you must have a rental car in Athens, I recommend parking in a paid garage or parking lot. This will help you avoid the confusing parking rules and generally, parking is not expensive in Athens.

Fines

Illegal parking fines are common, especially in Athens and other busy tourist destinations. Cars parked illegally may receive tickets, have license plates removed, or even be towed. Avoid parking too close to intersections, blocking driveways, or leaving your car in areas without clearly marked spaces.

In popular towns and islands, parking can be limited during the summer. Arriving early in the day or choosing accommodations with private parking can make your trip much easier.

Gas Stations and Fueling Up

Gas stations are widely available throughout mainland Greece, although they can be less frequent in remote villages and smaller islands. In larger cities and along highways, many stations stay open late or operate 24 hours, but in rural areas some may close in the afternoon or on Sundays.

Most gas stations accept both cash and credit cards, though carrying some cash is helpful just in case. Full-service fueling is common in Greece, meaning an attendant will often pump the gas for you. I have yet to pump my own gas in Greece. If you don’t want it full, tell them a specific amount you want, such as €30.

If you are planning a road trip through mountainous regions or remote islands, avoid letting your fuel tank get too low. Stations may be far apart, especially outside major tourist areas. You will also need to return the car with the same amount of fuel it had when you return it.

Planning Your Greek Road Trip

If you are traveling during summer or around holidays, reserving your rental car in advance is highly recommended. Prices tend to increase closer to travel dates, and automatic vehicles are especially limited in Greece.

One-way rentals can also be a great option if you plan to explore multiple regions without returning to your starting point. For example, many travelers pick up a car in Athens and drop it off in Thessaloniki or another major city. However, the cost of this is much higher.

Planning your driving routes ahead of time can save both time and stress. Greece has incredible scenery, but mountain roads and ferry schedules can slow travel more than expected. Booking accommodations in advance during peak season is also a smart idea, particularly on popular islands and in smaller villages.

Top Destinations to Explore

Renting a car gives you the freedom to experience parts of Greece that are difficult to reach by public transportation. Some of the best places to explore by car include:

Crete — Perfect for discovering beaches, mountain villages, and archaeological sites at your own pace.

Meteora — Driving allows you to visit multiple monasteries and scenic viewpoints easily.

Santorini — A car or ATV makes it easier to reach quieter beaches and sunset spots outside of Oia.

Nafplio — One of the most charming small cities in Greece and a great base for exploring ancient ruins nearby.

Peloponnese — Ideal for road trips filled with beaches, historic sites, wineries, and mountain towns.

Having your own vehicle allows you to stop at hidden beaches, local tavernas, and scenic viewpoints that many tourists never see.

Taking a Rental Car on the Greek Ferry

If you plan to take your rental car on a ferry, always confirm permission with the rental company first. Some companies prohibit ferry travel entirely, while others may allow it only with additional insurance coverage. In many cases, standard insurance policies do not fully cover damage that occurs while the vehicle is on a ferry.

Common Mistakes to Avoid When Renting a Car

Before signing your rental agreement, carefully review what insurance coverage is included. Basic coverage often comes with a high deductible, which could leave you responsible for significant costs in the event of damage.

Many travelers choose additional coverage for peace of mind, especially when driving on narrow island roads or in busy cities. It is also important to inspect the car thoroughly before leaving the rental lot and take photos of any existing scratches or dents.

Another common mistake is ignoring fuel policies, mileage limits, or ferry restrictions listed in the rental terms. Reading the fine print can help you avoid unexpected fees later.

Final Thoughts on Renting a Car in Greece

Renting a car in Greece is one of the best ways to experience the country beyond the typical tourist routes. From mountain villages and hidden beaches to ancient ruins and scenic coastal drives, having your own vehicle gives you flexibility and freedom throughout your trip.

With a little preparation and an understanding of local driving customs, renting a car in Greece can be safe, affordable, and incredibly rewarding. Use this guide to compare options, understand the rules, and confidently plan your Greek road trip adventure.

Visiting Greece is on many people’s lists, but what to pack for Greece is one of the most frequent questions that I receive. For the most part, packing for Greece is pretty easy. However, there are things you should keep in mind when packing for a trip to Greece. This is a list of what to pack for 10 days in Greece. You can also probably pack the same amount of things for a two-week trip to Greece.

Most people visit Greece in summer, so this Greek packing list is for a summer trip. The winter can be cold and wet, so pack accordingly.

If you only pack a few things for Greece, make it these — they’ll make your trip so much easier:

Anti-theft crossbody bag– perfect for busy areas like Athens
Comfortable walking sandals – you’ll be on your feet a LOT
Universal travel adapter – Greece uses European plugs
Lightweight summer dresses – breathable and easy to style

What to Wear in Athens

Almost everyone who visits Greece will spend at least one day in Athens. Athens is an old city, and many of the sidewalks need some help. They are also often made of marble, which is slippery even on a dry day!

Stick with flat shoes, like sneakers, for lots of walking. Many ancient sites are within walking distance, so it isn’t worth taking the metro or a taxi to reach them.

People dress up in Athens, but not so much in New York City. Dinner out can be formal or casual, depending on where you want to go. I would also say that darker colors are favored amongst the Athenian crowd, so dress similarly if you want to blend in with the locals. Shorts are acceptable in summer, but you might want a dress or pants for a night out.

Anti-Theft Bag (A Must in Athens)

Athens is generally safe, but like any major city, pickpocketing can happen in crowded areas.

View anti-theft travel bags here

It’s one of those small things that makes a big difference when you’re walking around all day.

What to Wear on the Greek Islands

Dressing on a Greek island is less formal than in Athens. You will see everything as well. Shorts are common during the day and even at night on most islands. I like to wear a casual dress on the islands for dinner, though. However, no one will care if you wear your nice shorts to a restaurant, though.

Even in the summer months, it can get cool at night on the islands, so you may want a light jacket or cardigan for the evenings. Also, a pair of pants. Take an umbrella or a rain jacket in case it rains.

The pants are also good for taking the ferry, where the air conditioning can be intense! It is no fun to be on a freezing ferry in shorts and a T-shirt.

Light colors are best for the islands since the heat and the white of the buildings can make it seem hotter than it is. Choose cotton or linen clothing that is breathable and dries fast.

Packing List for Greece

Three Dresses – One nice dress for a nice dinner out. The others can be casual wear for walking around during the day or used as a swimsuit cover-up.

3 Shorts – It gets hot in Greece in the summer. Bring ones that are cotton and easily washable. I love linen shorts for all my hot weather travels such as these.

Pants – One should be fine unless you are in Greece in May, June, September, or October. Then you might want it for the evening. I don’t recommend bringing jeans in the summer, as it can be too humid for them to be comfortable. Only bring jeans if you are coming early or very late in the season.

5 Shirts – Make sure the colors match all your bottom pieces. These should be cotton or a lightweight material. You will feel cooler this way.

One pair of walking sandals – Athens is very hilly, and as mentioned, the sidewalks are made of marble. I have fallen in Toms walking in Athens. You will need something with a good grip on the sole. I love these closed-toed ones from Keen. You might be more comfortable in sneakers for the traction.

Dressy sandals – You will want something nicer for dinners out, but make sure they also have a good grip.

Flip flops – Flip flops are essential for visiting a Greek beach. The sand can be hot, and you won’t want to wear your nicer sandals, since the sand will come back to the hotel with you.

Light cardigan – Nights can be chilly here, even in summer, since it is close to the sea. You may want a light layer to take with you at night. This cardigan is similar to the one I love and is just light enough to not be hot but take the chill off on a Greek evening.

Beach Towel – You must bring your own beach towel as you can’t rent them on the beach, and the hotels usually don’t let you take theirs to the beach.

Beach bag – A bag for your towel, sunscreen, and book is necessary, since you do not want to take a nice handbag to the beach. I like to bring a reusable tote bag that doubles as a grocery or laundry bag. Like many European countries, Greek grocery stores charge for plastic bags.

2 Swimsuits – You will want two swimsuits, even for a short trip, since it can be really humid in Greece in the summer. Drying out might take a day, and no one likes putting on a wet suit.

Rain Jacket – While it may not be cold while you are on a Greek island in the summer, it might rain, especially in the shoulder season months. Taking a rain jacket is a better alternative than an umbrella, so you can still use your hands. Make sure to get one with a hood.

Sunglasses – The Greek sun is intense, and even more so when it reflects off the white buildings of the Cycladic islands. Pack at least one pair and bring a backup in case you lose yours in the sea.

Pajamas – Obviously, you will want something to sleep in. This can be tricky in Greece, as many hotels will only offer a sheet on the bed. I think this is because Greeks don’t sleep with the air conditioning on, so you won’t want a heavy blanket. However, if you want the air conditioning on, bring the PJs you will be comfortable in.

Camera – You will want a camera to capture all the beautiful scenery you will see in Greece. I used a Sony A7rii camera, which I love. However, it may be more than you want. Many people will find that their phone camera is enough, just make sure you have a travel adapter and a charging cord!

Travel Adapter – The plugs in Greece are likely different from those in your home country. You will need a travel adapter for dual-voltage items, such as cell phones or computers. A great travel adapter is the Epicka line. Not only will you have a travel adapter that works in many countries, but many of them also have USB-C ports and fast charging capabilities. They come with extra fuses, so no worrying about a fuse dying and being unable to find a replacement.

Remember, they are not converters, so you will need a converter if your electronics are not dual voltage. Items such as hair dryers and hair straighteners are not usually dual voltage. For these items, I recommend buying them with dual voltage.

Laptop or Tablet – Most of you won’t need a laptop on vacation, but you may want it for entertainment on the plane or in the hotel in the evening. I have been in Greek hotels a few times without any English channels. A tablet is also a good option and may offer you a way to read some books on your beach vacation.

Packing cubes – Want to pack a bit more without having to bring a bigger suitcase? Consider using packing cubes to compress your clothes. I use them on every trip and prefer the Epika Compression Packing Cubes.

Water bottle – Water on the islands is not drinkable, but you can refill a water bottle at some city water fountains on the Greek islands. They look like fancy places to wash your hands or feet, but they are actually potable water. It is a good place to fill up rather than buying plastic water bottles all the time, and it is better for the environment.

Toiletries – Bring only what you need to survive a night or two. After that, you can purchase larger toiletries in the pharmacy in Athens or on the islands. Some of my favorite Greek cosmetic brands are found in pharmacies and not in grocery stores. Don’t forget your sunscreen!

Hat – Sunscreen may not be enough to protect you from the Greek sun. I recommend a large wide brim packable hat. This one is foldable and I travel with it all the time!

This will save you weight and space in your toiletry bag, and you’ll also get a usable souvenir if you don’t use them all.

Backpack or Suitcase

Personally, I think this is a matter of preference, but many people will want to know what kind of suitcase to bring to Greece. If you aren’t island-hopping, a rolling suitcase is fine in Athens since you will most likely check into one hotel and not move around.

If you are going to an island after visiting Athens, you might want a backpack, as it will make walking to the ferry or your island hotel much easier, since the sidewalks can be uneven on the islands as well as in Athens. If you are taking a taking a taxi to and from your hotel, then it doesn’t matter much.

I personally take a rolling suitcase on almost all longer trips. It makes it easier for me to get on the Greek ferry and saves my back. I also arrange transport on the islands with the hotel or take a taxi for arrival.

If you want to pack light but struggle with that, I recommend using compression packing cubes. They can help take the bulk out of what you pack and provide organization.

Things to Note

Laundry – Both in Athens and on the islands, you can find laundromats and laundry service, so don’t overpack thinking you can’t do it. On the mainland, you might have to have your hotel do it.

Day Trips – Take a small bag for essentials on day trips around Athens and the islands.

Medicines/First Aid – Things like over-the-counter painkillers and Band-Aids are not often sold in supermarkets unless you are in a small village or island. You will find these at the pharmacy. The pharmacists here are well-trained and help you with minor issues as well. No need to bring tons of first aid items with you.

Having traveled to Greece for the past several years and now living in Athens, I discover new great Greek cosmetic and beauty products all the time. As in many European countries, you can find upscale beauty product brands in pharmacies.

Don’t worry; I am not becoming a beauty blogger. However, I think it is helpful to share this with you for two reasons. One is that you don’t have to search for good brands for basic needs like shampoo and lotion. Two, I think these things make better souvenirs since you will actually use them.

Korres

Korres was the first Greek beauty brand I discovered. I love the smell of cotton, and I found their brand when I saw a Pure Cotton lotion. I also noticed they had a perfume called Pure Cotton! When I left Greece, I bought both of them on one of the Greek Islands. The smell is heavenly and not overpowering. The lotion was a body butter, and while thick, it absorbed quickly. My dehydrated skin appreciated the moisture after two weeks in the Greek sun.

There are also matching body washes in most of the same scents.

At the Athens airport, in the duty-free area, there is a whole Korres shop. Since I had some Euros left over, I bought some colored lip balm that matched my tan. Then I also found an anti-aging body oil that smelled of Jasmine. That went in my basket as well! The oil was great for putting on after a shower as a lotion alternative.

Korres also makes shampoos, conditioners, make-up, skincare, and some natural health remedies. I have only tried the throat lozenges. You can really only find these items at pharmacies and the store at the Athens airport.

Some Korres products are available at Sephora, but not the body lotions or shower gels. It is mostly their skincare line, which I haven’t tried yet. Many of their products are made with olive oil if you really want to go Greek! You can find some of their products on Amazon as well if you can’t wait till you get to Greece to try them.

Photo by Tugce Turan on Pexels.com

Apivita

Apivita was my discovery of Greek cosmetics this year. I had not brought much shampoo and conditioner on this trip, knowing I would be in Greece long enough to need to find a local brand. I have oily roots and dry ends. One day, I was looking and found Apivita had a shampoo and conditioner specifically for oily roots and dry ends! It is the first product like this I have seen that actually works for me. I could go for several days without my hair looking greasy at the roots.

Another hair care product I love from them is their hair masks. Since my ends tend to be dry, I tried the Moisturizing Hair Mask with Hyaluronic Acid. Not only did it make my hair soft, but it also smells amazing!

Apivita also makes body lotions and some face anti-aging products. The other product I have loved from them have been the facial scrubs. I had been in Greece for so many months, my skin was suffering from all the sun exposure, my fault. I was looking for a scrub that would do more than just exfoliate. Apivita has a Bilberry brightening scrub and mask that is great.

Unfortunately, I have not found Apivitia in any US beauty stores yet. However, some products are available on Amazon, like the Korres products. You can find it at many other European pharmacies as well.

Olive Era

Olive Era is a brand I found in the Sofitel Athens Airport Hotel. It was in the bathroom, next to the toiletries. If you love the smell of olive leaves, then you will love this lotion! It smells like an olive grove with a hint of citrus.

I believe it is a spa product, though, as I haven’t seen it anywhere else. I can’t even find it online, which is a shame, as I only took one lotion bottle from the hotel, and there were two! This is definitely a hidden gem worth seeking out. There was also shampoo and conditioner from Olive Era in the hotel. They sold full-size bottles in the spa, though. Now I think I am on a mission. According to the label, it is made in Crete, so Crete may be on my next trip to Greece!

May 2019 Update: I received an email from Olive Era, and they now have a website. Click here for the link. There is also a store near Syntagma Square now.

Kear

Kear got in touch with me recently to share their brand. They graciously sent me items to review. While this is a review, all opinions are my own. The first thing I noticed when I received the package was that there was hardly any plastic! The jars were made of glass or metal, and the lids were wood or metal. I love that!

Kear sent many products to try. They were all amazing, and I love the use of natural Greek products in them. Each has a pleasant smell that reflects the product’s ingredients. My favorite items from the ones they sent are the Mastic Herbal Soap, the Soft Lip balm, and the Calm Revive Arnica Body Oil. The body oil smells divine and wasn’t greasy at all.

All the products are made in Greece with Greek products. Kear is available on their website, in pharmacies in Athens, Naxos, and Thessaloniki, and some soaps can be found in the AB supermarkets. Another great Greek beauty brand to take home as a souvenir on your next trip to Greece!

What about you? Do you have any favorite Greek cosmetic or beauty brands?

Greek food never disappoints, and Naxos has a great food scene. This is due, in part, to the fact that it is an agricultural island. It is known for its potatoes and cheese. There are many great places to eat on this large island, and here are a few of my favorites from my years of visiting.

Oasis

Oasis is a family-run restaurant in Naxos. The restaurant is located in Naxos Town near Saint George’s Beach. All of the food is homemade. Specials are offered daily and vary depending on the day of the week. I recommend the pasticcio, the stuffed peppers, and the pork stew.

Meltemi

Meltemi is located just up the road from Oasis near Saint George’s beach. It has been around for many years, and people continue to return year after year. Meltemi’s moussaka is one of my favorites on the island. The dip they serve with bread is excellent. Most of the food they serve is traditional Greek cuisine.

Metaxi Mas

Metaxi Mas is located in Naxos’ Old Town. Here, you can choose to eat in the streets of the old town. Alternatively, you can sit inside in one of the cozy interiors. Everything I have eaten here has been excellent. My favorites are the zucchini balls, pasticcio, and the spicy meatballs.

Faros

Not all of the best restaurants in Naxos are located in Naxos Town. Faros is located at Agia Anna beach and features organic dishes. It also offers a great view of the beach. Faros also has some of the best zucchini balls on the island. To get to Faros, take the bus from Naxos Old Town to Agia Anna and walk down past the pier and it will be on your left.

Kitron

Kitron is one of my favorite places for breakfast, lunch and coffee. It is located right in the main port area of town and is a good spot to ferry watch while you enjoy your meal. Kitron is also a great place to get some work done, as the wifi even works outside there. Kitron is open year round!

For breakfast, I order the Strapatsada. This scrambled egg dish is a Greek classic. The eggs are cooked with finely chopped tomatoes and feta cheese.

If you go for lunch, they have a variety of sandwiches to choose from or light snacks. Don’t forget that afternoon Greek coffee either. In the evening, you can explore the Kitron liquor offerings. Kitron is made from the citron fruit, and it is distilled on the island in the village of Halki.

La Paloma

La Paloma is a new restaurant that opened in the summer of 2024. It is located in Chora near the waterfront. The main food offering is Tex-Mex. On my recent visit, my hotel owners had just visited La Paloma for the first time and recommended it. I was intrigued.

Despite just opening, the service and the food were excellent. I am very picky about Margaritas, but theirs was really close to what I am used to in Texas. In addition, I ordered the shrimp tacos, which were perfect. I love a good shrimp taco. Everyone else’s food also looked great.

Another great thing about La Paloma is that it faces the sunset. You get a perfect view of the sunset over Paros here. I recommend a reservation at La Paloma, as it fills up fast, and you can get a better view of the sunset if you ask for the right tables in front.

Picasso on the Beach

Picasso is also on the beach as you may have guessed. Picasso is a Mexican restaurant, and as a Texan, I am always critical of Mexican food. However, Picasso does a good job given their limited access to Mexican ingredients. The fajitas were good, and they serve a frozen strawberry after dinner drink. Picasso on the Beach is located at Plaka beach and is reachable by bus. Tell the bus driver you want to get off at Picasso.

Paradiso

Most people stop to eat at Paradiso because of the stunning view its beachside tables offer at Agia Anna. However, you should also stop because the food is outstanding! The beetroot salad and the papoutsakia (eggplant with minced meat) were terrific. So was the semolina cake we were offered on the house. If you really like the location, they also have rooms for rent.

Scirocco

If you need a break from Greek food, then I recommend Scirocco for Italian food. My favorite there is the carbonara. They also serve Greek food if you and your friends are undecided! It is a nice place to people watch as it is located in the main square of Naxos Town and many Greek families gather there in the evening to socialize.

Barabbas

Barabbas is a traditional taverna located near the port of Naxos. You will see many locals eating here. It is only open for dinner though. However, once you eat here you will definitely be back. Their speciality is fish and slow cooked meats. I recommend any pork dish on the menu! When I ordered, the brought out a complimentary appetizer. Don’t forget to have some local wine here too.

Hurmas

Hurmas is also a new addition in Naxos, opening in 2024. Not only is it open all day, offering breakfast, lunch, dinner, and drinks, but it is also open year-round! I only ate there once, but the food was excellent, as was the wine selection. The inside of the building is beautiful as well.

Sun Kyma

Sun Kyma opened in 2024 and replaced the Flisvos restaurant at Flisvos apartments. I loved the food at Flisvos, so I wasn’t sure how the new place would be. However, I loved the food, and the staff was very friendly. It is a bit more upscale now, and the prices reflect that. However, the food was great quality, and I loved the zucchini balls—one of my Greek favorites.

Apostolis

Apostolis is a modern Greek restaurant serving classic Greek dishes with a twist. The restaurant is located in the Naxos Chora and has a wonderful setting under paper lanterns.

Etere

Not Greek food, but just as good as it is Italian. Etere is also new as of 2025. I found this place on TikTok and knew I had to give it a try. The service was top-notch. The location is along a busy road, but it makes up for it with a stunning view of the sunset.

I had the mushroom risotto and I loved it, well, except for the kale garnish. The real star is the tiramisu, which is make in large quantities and served directly from the dish at your table.

O Giorgis

For the more adventurous type, head to the village of Melanes and eat at O Giorgis. I had some of the best food in Naxos here. The baked eggplant was so well seasoned and melted in my mouth. I was so full but still managed to finish the whole thing. Sit on the enclosed patio so you can have a wonderful view of the valley.

Coffee and Desserts

Greece is known for good coffee, and Naxos is no exception. I have spent lots of time having coffee in Naxos to see which places serve the best coffee and desserts.

Artοποιώ

This coffee shop and bakery was one of the first places I tried when I arrived in Naxos. I was up very early due to my jet lag and they were already open by 6:30 AM. The coffee is probably the best on the island. The baked goods are freshly made in the shop and it smells heavenly.

σιτάρι

Not only does this place have wonderful coffee but they also have some organic products available as well. If I am correct, the bakery is called Wheat in English. It is also open early for those of you who are morning people.

Waffle House

This is not the American Waffle House; this is a wonderful ice cream parlor serving ice cream on waffles. You can get the ice cream to go or you can sit and have it brought to you by a waiter.

Over the years, I have spent so much time in Naxos, Greece that I have explored everything to do in Naxos. Since Naxos is the largest island in the Cyclades, you need more than a few days to do all the things in Naxos.

I made a good effort in trying to do as many things in Naxos as I could without sacrificing my need to relax on a Naxos beach. Here are the things I recommend doing on your Naxos holiday.

1. Naxos Castle (Kastro)

Sitting on the hill above Naxos town is the castle. You may hear the locals call it the Kastro. Built in 1207 by the Venetians, the Kastro is still used today. You can wander inside and explore the Archaeological Museum. Some people still live in the castle.

The castle is easy to reach from Naxos town by following the signs or look for the white arrows on the ground. Once there you get an amazing view of Naxos and on a clear day, you can see Paros. The Kastro is a great place to watch the sunset, too.

2. Domus Festival

From April to October, the Domus Festival puts on several shows a week in the Catholic Church located in the Kastro. The festival features music, film and dancing. Most of the activities are Naxos or Greece related. There are posters all over town telling you what will be on that week.

I went one night to see the Traditional Naxos Singing and Dancing, which was excellent. During the show, someone would come on and explain the meanings of the songs and the dances. The host did this in both English and Greek. Included in the €20 cost was wine and other drinks.

Find the best hotel in naxos

3. Visit the Beach

Since Naxos is so large, there are tons of amazing beaches located all over the island. Agios Georgios is one of my favorite beaches on Naxos and is located right in town. It is less than a ten-minute walk from Naxos Old Town to the beach. To reach the beaches further away from town you can take the public bus. The bus leaves from the bus terminal that is near the ferry terminal. During the summer the buses run often. You should purchase both your tickets to go and return on the bus at this station.

4. Explore the Mountain Villages

There are so many great moutain villages in Athens, you could spend all your time in Naxos just exploring these. However, you probably came for some beach time, so I will recommend the best ones!

First is the village of Apiranthos, or the marble village. It is made up of a lot of marble, as the name suggests. You will want to get lost in the alleyways and have a coffee overlooking the mountains here.

Filoti is another wonderful village to spend the afternoon in. There are shops, a museum, and several good restaurants in the village. Many people park here to do the hike to Mount Zas. Even if you don’t do the hike, the landscape is beautiful.

The public bus goes to both of these villages, meaning you don’t have to rent a car to get there. Combine these with a visit to Halki and you will have a day trip built of exploring the inner area of Naxos.

5. Go to the Olive Press Museum

This tiny museum is worth the trip to Eggares village. It shows the traditional olive press and they will tell you how it operates. There is also a demonstration. They also have a shop that has so many unique homemade products. My favorites were the olive jam, it is way better than it sounds, and the fig jam. They also sell non-food items if you are only taking a carry-on bag on your flight.

6. Visit the Portara

You can’t miss this ancient Greek temple if you are in Naxos. It sits at the entrance of the port. The temple is not in ruins, it was just never finished. The part you see, the Portara is the door to the temple. In Greek, Portara means large door. This is one of the best places to catch the sunset in Naxos! Get there early to score a good spot.

7. Take a day sail to the Small Cyclades

While Naxos has plenty to do, you would be missing some incredible smaller islands if you didn’t take a trip to the Small Cyclades. There are many sailboats in the harbor that will take you on a day sail to these islands.

The best thing about these is they can take you to caves on these islands that are not reachable by land. The Small Cyclades are not touristy at all so you will be getting an authentic look at Greek life on a small island.

8. Wander through Naxos Old Town

Naxos Old Town is the historic part of Naxos. If you arrive by ferry, the Old Town is just steps away. Here you can shop, get lost or just enjoy the traditional Greek architecture in the Old Town. I recommend exploring both during the day and night. It has a totally different feel at different times of the day. I also recommend you explore it a few times during your trip to Naxos as you will discover something new every time.

9. Visit the Archaeological Museum

Nestled in the Kastro is the Archaeological Museum of Naxos. All of the artifacts at the museum were found on Naxos or surrounding islands and date back to 5300 BC. The collection of Early Cycladic marble figurines is second only to the collection in Athens. Be sure to check out the kouros torso that dates back to the 6th century BC.

10. Take a trip to the Temple of Demeter

The Temple of Demeter is located near the village of Sangri in Naxos. The temple has been restored to some degree but you can still see the original marble in some parts of the temple. It was built around 530 BC.

Not only is the temple a beautiful sight to behold but it sits in the middle of Naxos farmland and offers great views of the countryside.

11. Go to the village of Halki

Not all of the things to do in Naxos are in Naxos town. One of the best villages to visit is Halki, the original capital of Naxos. You can reach Halki by taking the public bus from the port. In Halki, you will discover a quiet but fun village.

You can visit the Kitron distillery there, which is a popular Naxianliquorr. There is a wonderful pottery shop that produces some amazing pieces of art, called Fish and Olive. Take a ten-minute walk to visit the Byzantine church of St. Georges. It was built in the 11th century. If you want to go inside, you will need to go in July and August as it is closed for the rest of the year.

12. Eat in the village of Melanes

Some of the best food I had in Naxos was eaten in Melanes at Giorgis. This family-run restaurant overlooks the valley below and has wonderful food. Unlike many restaurants in Naxos, they only close briefly after the season in October and reopen in December just in time for the holidays. If you are with other people, I recommend everyone ordering one or two things and sharing it. This way you get to try many different things.

13. Take home some of Naxos

One of my favorite shops in Naxos is Aegean Blue. While I am not a big shopper when traveling but when I find a place where I can buy a souvenir that is useful or practical, I am a fan. I actually discovered Aegean Blue before I went to Naxos on Instagram. I couldn’t wait to check out the shop.

I purchased a beautiful purse that has a distinctly Greek feel and I used it for the rest of my time in Naxos. They have clothes, home decor and jewelry. Some pieces are more expensive but they have something for everyone. You can even make a day of it since it is located on Plaka Beach and right in front is the wonderful Picasso on the Beach restaurant.

14. Climb Mount Zas

Mount Zas is the highest peak in the Cyclades. It is a popular place to hike for a variety of reasons. The legend is that this is where Zeus was born. There are several routes you can take to get to the summit. One route takes you past the Cave of Zeus but is the most difficult route. No matter which route you choose to take you will be rewarded with stunning views of Naxos at the top. Just be sure to leave early and take plenty of water with you.

15. Explore Ancient Naxos

Located underground is the Metropolis Museum. This museum is the remains of ancient Naxos. The settlement was built in the 11th century BC. The museum contains the remnants of the Mycenean settlement.

It is believed the settlement was abandoned due to the fear of sea flooding. You can see the settlement through glass panes that cover the artifacts

As you can see there are plenty of things to do in Naxos and there is something for everybody. Have you been to Naxos? What was your favorite thing to do?

Getting from Athens to Naxos

You can reach Naxos by ferry or plane. The ferry leaves from Piraeus port near Athens. You can find the ferry schedule and book tickets at Ferry Hopper. Flights are direct from Athens airport and only takes about 25 minutes.

Hotels in Naxos

There are tons of hotels in Naxos to choose from. There are hotels along many beaches, and in the Old Town of Naxos. Hotels range from budget to luxury. For my full recommendations on where to stay and which hotel, check out my Where to Stay in Naxos page.

Packing for a sailing trip around the Greek Islands seems like it should be easy, you just throw a swimsuit, shorts, and sunscreen, and go right?! Well, that might be fine on a cruise, but reading the list provided by the sailing company, I was unsure how to pack and what to pack it in.

Surprisingly, I only found a few blog posts regarding packing for a sailing or boat trip. Most of what I found was not for a two-week trip and were for only very casual trips, and I was going to be eating out every night on this trip.

I recommend only bringing cotton and linen items, as you will feel much more comfortable in those fabrics, and they dry quickly. You may be able to get laundry done on one of the islands. Greece is also casual, and you will not feel out of place in shorts every day. At night, people do dress a bit nicer, but Greece is still casual at night, think summer dresses and nice pants.

4-5 pairs of shorts – I only brought three and kicked myself for taking the 4th pair out at the last minute. Yes, I did laundry, but even linen takes time to dry in the humid air.

5-6 t-shirts and tank tops – I brought this many because I tend to spill on myself!

7-8 pairs of underwear- You can bring more or less, depending on how much hand washing you want to do

3-4 bras – You will probably be in your swimsuit every day during the day

1 pair of pants or jeans – The nights can get chilly, and I was happy to have them

3-4 dresses – We went out to dinner every night, but one, and I only brought 3 and wished I had one more for variety

Windbreaker – Preferably one that is waterproof. It rained one day, and one rough sea day, and mine kept me warm. You also never know when a storm may come up on the water.

3-4 swimsuits – Too many! Probably isn’t a thing, but I wore my two bikinis the most.

1-2 coverups or sarongs – I wore my cover-up when walking to the beaches from the boat. You could also wear your shorts, but then they might get wet. I made sure mine were long enough to be comfortable to wear inside a shop or restaurant I might want to pop into along the way.

Hat – Make sure it has a strap to keep it on in the wind or attach it to your clothes with a clip. This one also has the added benefits of being foldable for packing and being adjustable.

Shoes

1 pair of flip-flops – Essential for the beach. Sometimes the sand is too hot to walk on, and you will need them to get to your desired Greek beach location.

1-2 pairs of sandals – Good for going out. Don’t bring heels. We walked far on some nights for dinner, and the streets are not even. If you must be high, bring wedges. The specific ones I purchased for many years are no longer being made, but I have included a link to a similar pair.

1 pair of deck shoes with light-colored soles – These are especially important if you plan on helping with the sailing of the boat. They will protect your toes from getting broken! Most boats prefer light-colored soles so your shoes do not scuff the deck. The ones I wore are no longer available, but these are similar in style.

Toiletries

Sunscreen – Bring as much as you think you will need. You can buy it in Greece, but it will be very expensive. Don’t bring spray sunscreen as it can make everything slippery, which is not what you want on a boat.

Deodorant – It is hot!

Make-up – Most days I only applied this at night for dinner. For the day, I either wore nothing or cc cream with sunscreen

Shampoo/Conditioner – For two weeks, I brought full-sized bottles because I have long hair. You may be able to get away with less. The sea and the wind do take a toll on your hair, so conditioner is a must. Bars of shampoo and conditioner would also be a great thing for saving space and being less messy on a boat.

Hair texturizer – You will not be able to blow-dry your hair on the boat, so bring something to style your hair (if you want). The link is to my favorite sea salt spray.

Bar of soap – I found this much easier and one less liquid to bring on onboard.

Lotion – The sea and the sun will dry your skin out. Bring something that doubles as after-sun (something with aloe vera).

Bug wipes – There are mosquitoes in Greece. I prefer bug wipes, as again, one less liquid, and it doesn’t spray everywhere. Get the unscented ones!

Sailing in Greece

What to Pack it All-In!

Rolling duffel bag – There is no place to store a traditional rolling suitcase. You need a bag that can be squished flat for storage. The one I chose had a small, hard bottom, which offered some protection for fragile things and liquids.

Day bag – You will want something to carry while sightseeing.

Beach bag – I didn’t bring one but was given a tote on arrival in Athens, and I was so glad as I brought it to the beach.

Evening bag – You may want something to carry to dinner instead of your day bag.

Dry bags – If you bring a camera or any other electronics, you should bring at least one dry bag. This will keep it protected if you have to take the dingy to shore.

Technology

Camera – This goes without saying, but you will want your camera.

E-reader – If you are a big reader like me, then bringing several books was easier with an e-reader.

Travel Adapter – No matter what technology you bring with you, if you are not from the EU, your plugs will not fit in the electrical sockets here. You will need an adapter and this one is great because it has many plug options and has USB ports both regular and c kind.

Other

Beach towel – The company I went with didn’t provide one, so I brought a Turkish towel for the beach. They are thinner than a regular towel, are super absorbent, and can act as a sarong in a pinch.

Clothespins – You will want to hang your clothes to dry, and the boat may have some pins, but if everyone hangs up at the same time, the pins go quickly.

Earplugs – Some harbors are loud at night, and wearing earplugs helped me to get to sleep and stay asleep.

Eyemask – Depending on where you are, you might want to sleep with the windows open, so if you want to avoid being woken up with the sun, I recommend an eye mask to sleep a bit later.

Have you been sailing? What do you recommend packing?

After several years of research and a year of living in Greece, I finally have my Greece resident permit.

Getting a Greek resident permit is not hard, but it takes patience and persistence to get it. I am going to walk you through the steps of applying for the Greek resident permit here. This is for the financially independent resident permit. Keep in mind there are several types of permits in Greece that you can apply for.

Before you enter Greece, you should apply for a visa in your home country. Read my blog post about that if you haven’t done that yet.

Do You Need an Attorney?

One of the questions I am asked frequently is if you need an attorney to apply for the Greece resident permit. It is not required but may make the process easier for you. The lawyers in Greece have direct access to the Aliens administration to make appointments and ask questions.

If you decide to get an attorney, ask around to find one who has experience with this process. Many are not familiar with applying for the financially independent resident permit.

To use an attorney, you will need to get a power of attorney. The lawyer can write it up for you in Greek. You will then take it to your local KEP office to have it notarized. The KEP is Greece’s citizens’ services department. Take your passport with you. You may also need to have several copies of the power of attorney notarized, so do a few at once. At the time of writing this, there were no fees for the notarization.

The lawyer will tell you what they want you to do next.

Gather All Your Documents

To apply for a resident permit, you will need many documents. Some of these will be similar to what you needed for your visa, so bring all those documents with you to Greece.

The documents you will need are your passport and a full-color copy of all pages, your birth certificate with apostille, a rental contract for an apartment or utility bill in your name, financial records that you are using to provide proof of income, you will also need proof of insurance and passport photos. The passport photos will need to be digital on a CD and the four physical copies.

At the time of writing, you need to prove you have €3500 a month in savings, passive income, or retirement income.

All these documents will need to be translated into Greek. If you are not using a lawyer, you must find a certified translator. I have used Found in Translation for several years and they are efficient.

Application Process without a Laywer

In the last few years, the appointment system as improved as you can submit your documents online to be reviewed. Here is a link to the system. However, it is only in Greek at the moment, so you will need to download Google Translate to assist you if you don’t read Greek.

Scan all your documents into PDFs. If you have multiple documents for financial records, scan them into one file.

Pay the Fee

To apply for the resident permit, you will need to pay the fee. Right now, the fee is €1000, and you can pay it online. This process is a bit complicated as you need to do this before you finish the application. You will need to provide the code that is given once you pay in the application. Here is the link for the payment system, called e-Paravolo. It is available in English!

You will also need to pay €16 for the plastic card. This can also be done on the same website as above. However, you don’t need to pay this until you are emailed to pick up your card. Pay when you get this email and bring your receipt to your appointment.

You will receive an email after you submit the application. This will give you a temporary paper, sometimes called the ‘blue paper’ even though it isn’t blue anymore. It allows entry and permission to stay while your permit is processed.

After Your Appointment

Once you have gone to the appointment, you may need to submit more documents after the appointment. They will email you if this is needed and provide you a URL to upload the documents to. You can also check the status of your application online.

How to Pick Up Your Resident Permit

When you get the notice that your resident permit is ready, you will need to make another appointment to pick it up. To do so, you will need to register your resident permit number in the system. The online status system will show you this at the bottom of the notice under remarks.

You will then go to the migration website to register and make an appointment to pick up your Greece Resident Permit.

Once you have registered, you can make an appointment. This part of the website is in Greek only. When you translate the website to English, there will be a section called “Performances,” which is not the correct translation. Then you will click on “Appointment for Performances.” This is also not the correct translation. However, this is where you make the appointment to pick up your plastic resident permit card.

When you go to your appointment, you need to take a printout of your appointment with you, your passport, and your temporary resident permit (the blue paper). You will give them the temporary permit.

They will print out a decision about your permit and all the rules for renewing it. You will then sign for the permit, and that is it! You are officially a Greece resident.

Other Things to Know

The financially independent resident permit is initially good for two years and can be renewed. If you are denied, there is an appeals process. Please email the administration for guidance on how to do this.

The process for getting a resident permit isn’t hard, but as you can see, there are many steps involved.

There is nothing like the feeling you get when you have that Greece Resident Permit in hand. I was so relieved to get it. If you are in the process, I hope this helps, and if you haven’t started it yet, I hope you are now better prepared to start. If you have questions, I will do my best to answer them.

Since my first trip to Greece, I dreamed of moving there. However, like in many European countries, it is hard for a person from the United States to move to Greece. At the time, I was still working in Qatar and had no idea how I could move to Greece without a job or speaking Greek. I started to do research and realized that Greece has a National Visa. This is informally known as a long-stay visa in Greece and many other European countries.

Each country has rules about issuing a long-stay or national visa. The requirements were unclear on the Greece website, and I couldn’t find any articles about them. The rules changed even after I first inquired, so I hope this article will help someone else with the Greece National Visa process. Please remember that I am from the US, and the rules might differ in another country.

I do want to emphasize that this is not the process for the Digital Nomad Visa. The Digital Nomad Visa can be applied for in and out of Greece depending on where you are from and has very different requirements.

The Process

For the Greece National Visa, you must apply for one in your home country before you enter Greece. You must apply for the visa in the United States at your designated consulate or embassy location; click here for the list. Once you find your consulate, call them to ask what the required documents are.

The list on the website is not current at the time of writing this post. Next, begin to gather all the documents you need. Only once you are confident you have all the documents you need, call back to the consulate to make the appointment.

Remember that many consulates are small, and the visa department may only be one person, as is the case in the Houston consulate. When I called at the end of May, I could only get an appointment at the end of July! During this call, I was told I needed one more document. Busier consulates have a much longer wait.

You will present all your documents at the appointment and will likely have a short interview. At the Houston consulate, I was emailed when my visa was approved. If you live close by, you may be able to pick up your passport from the consulate with the visa. Otherwise, you will need to provide a pre-paid envelope to the consulate. I recommend getting one with insurance in case your passport is lost and you need to replace it. It will also provide tracking.

The Documents

This is the list of documents I was told I needed. Remember that this list can change and differ for each consulate.

Passport with at least six months of validity past the end date of your visa

Birth certificate – official copy from the past six months

Apostille of the birth certificate – this needs to be done in the state the birth certificate was issued

Proof of income of at least €3500 a month or equivalent in your currency

Health insurance valid in Greece

FBI Background check or your country’s equivalent

Health certificate from your doctor – have it printed on letterhead if they don’t have a stamp.

Visa Application with a passport photo

Visa fee, which was about $200 (this may have gone up)

Other Things to Know

Please note that this is not necessarily a valid option for digital nomads or people looking for a job in Greece. I applied as a financially independent person, as you cannot work in Greece. I have plenty of savings to cover the required income for the visa.

Once you are in Greece, you must apply for a residence permit, which has its own requirements. Please read my whole blog post on the Greece Resident Permit application process.

Please let me know your questions about applying for a Greece National Visa, and I will try to help.

Santorini is many people’s dream destination and the most famous island to visit in Greece. Here are all the things you need to know before you see the famous Santorini sunset!

When Should You Visit Santorini

Since it is the most popular island in Greece, you will want to avoid July and August if possible. The best time to visit most Greek islands is September. For Santorini, I recommend visiting later in September. It will be less crowded and not as hot. If you can’t go then, I suggest going in May, as it is just starting to wake from its winter slumber.

Not everything will be open if you come in the off-season. This includes months like March or November. You need to make hotel arrangements in advance and confirm them. You will also want to do the same with flights or ferries. The ferries do run in the winter, but they run less often. Cancellations due to weather do happen, so keep that in mind.

Where to Stay in Santorini

There are many villages to stay in while in Santorini, Greece. The two most popular are Oia and Fira. Oia is where most people gather to watch the sunset, and Fira is the capital. Of those two, I would choose Fira. It has a bit more space, so it won’t feel as crowded, and the main bus stop is there, making it great for taking public transport. It also offers way more parking than Oia.

For a more detailed overview of my recommendations, read my Where to Stay in Santorini article.

Personally, I would pick another village entirely, such as Imvorgeili or Pyrgos. With Imovrgili, you still get a caldera view and aren’t far from Oia and Fira. Villages like Pyrgos are great if you are going to rent a car and want a less touristy feel.

Looking for a traditional Santorini Cave House? Stay at Demeter Cave House in Pyrgos.

How to Get to Santorini

Santorini is far from Athens, so keep that in mind when scheduling your travel to Greece. You have two options from Athens. You can fly or take the ferry. Flying from Athens is about 45 minutes. The flights run all year round.

The other option is to take the ferry. Ferries to Santorini island run from Piraeus, and during the high season also run from Rafina. The fast ferry to Santorini is about 5 hours, and the slow one is 8 hours. The fast ferries are okay but not for you if you get seasick easily.

Book your ferry ticket to Santorini here.

I like to fly to Santorini as I don’t like the fast ferry. Also, there are only a few islands you can fly to Santorini from, such as Crete and Rhodes, so do your research if you need to make a quick connection.

What is the Weather Like in Santorini

Not only are July and August the busiest time of year in Santorini, but also the hottest. And it will feel even hotter again, the white houses that are reflecting the sun onto you. The volcanic beach sand will burn, so wear beach shoes!

Again, September is not as hot. But October and May are the best if you want warmth but not scorching. You might even have some cool nights then, which will be most welcome. Remember that you may have some days of rain in October, but it usually doesn’t last long.

How to Get Around Santorini

Santorini is best seen by renting a car. There are public buses. However, all go to Fira first before heading to their next destination. This means you will need to switch. During the high season, they are very crowded and may be standing room only. There aren’t many taxis on the island despite its popularity.

If you can’t rent a car, book your taxi in advance to pick you up from the airport or ferry terminal. Your hotel may be able to do this for you. If not, I recommend using a taxi service called Welcome Pickups. You book them in advance, and they have an English-speaking driver for waiting for you with a sign.

If you decide to use the bus, here is the current Santorini bus schedule. Remember that not all stops are listed, so if it doesn’t list each stop, ask at the ticket office or the bus driver. The complete schedule will be posted at the Fira bus station.

Where Should I Watch the Sunset in Santorini

As I mentioned earlier, most people go to Oia to watch the sunset. Most specifically, Oia Castle. If you have several nights in Santorini, this is worth doing at least once. It will be crowded, so my tip is to walk part of the way down the old donkey trail under the castle. You will have fewer people and an unobstructed view, albeit a bit smelly. Totally worth it to have more space and the perfect sunset shot.

After that night, go to almost any west-facing village, and you will have a great sunset view. Pyrgos village is the highest point, so it is one of the best places to catch it from. Plus, on a clear day, you can see all the way to Crete from Pyrgos.

Book Restaurants in Advance

Given Santorini’s popularity, many of the more famous restaurants in Santorini will be booked well in advance. This is especially true if they have a sunset view. Once you have locked in travel days and hotels, booking restaurants is your next step.

Two restaurants you should definitely make reservations for if you plan on going are Ammoudi Fish Tavern and Metaxi Mas.

Santorini Isn’t Just For Couples

Yes, it is a romantic destination, but there is plenty to do for the solo traveler and the group of friends. So if this is your dream and you aren’t a couple, go! Both times I have gone, I have been solo. Greece is safe and welcoming to all travelers, and then you can do what you want when you want. This means you can take a nap at 2 in the heat of the day or get up early to hike the Fira to Oia hike if you want!

A Few Practical Tips to Keep in Mind

What I have mentioned so far covers the most important things to know before you book. Still, here are a few practical things you should also know before you arrive.

You can’t drink the water on the Greek islands. It won’t make you really sick if you do, but it might give you an upset tummy. You can use it to make hot drinks such as tea or coffee, and wash fruits off, but don’t drink it. Grab some bottles of water. Your hotel will likely have a few for you to get started with.

You can’t flush toilet paper in most places in Greece, including Santorini. The pipes are old and small. There will be a covered trash can with a liner next to the toilet. Don’t worry about this; the Greeks are totally used to it, and it will not smell!! I promise.

There are tons of stairs in Santorini. If you have mobility issues, this may not be the island for you. Some are steep, and some are not. Some are even marble. Go slow and hang onto the walls if needed.

Santorini is expensive, especially in the high season. Your biggest expense will be your hotel. Book early and plan ahead. If you can’t afford a caldera view every night, book it for one night and move to a less expensive hotel. If you can, go in May or October, as prices will be lower for hotels and some transportation.

Most of the beaches are not sandy and are volcanic rocks or sand. You need to remember that Santorini, Greece is an active volcano, and what you see is the top of the volcano. This means the beaches aren’t sandy and don’t slope into the sea. There is one sandy beach, but the red beach and black beach are rock and volcanic sand. You need to wear shoes on the beach to not burn them!

Most of all, enjoy it!

If you need ideas of what to do on your Santorini vacation, I have an ebook for sale that include 1, 3 and 5-day itineraries.

With only nine residences, you will feel like you live in a small Greek island village rather than a hotel. This is the charm of Sigma Residences, though. You have lots of privacy but feel like you belong all at once.

Each residence has its own outdoor space to enjoy views of the sea and the village of Kastro off in the distance. Since each Sigma Residence contains a kitchen, you can be ensconced in the hotel if you like. Some residences are studios designed for one or two people; others are larger, with two bedrooms and more space for families.

Apollonia Residence

I stayed in the Apollonia Residence, a one-bedroom residence offering stunning views of the valley. What I loved about the Apollonia was that I felt like I had my own little Sifnos apartment. There was a guest bathroom as well as the main bathroom. This meant someone could stay on the sofa in the living room, and you could still have privacy in the bedroom.

The bed was one of the best hotel beds I have ever slept in, and I have slept in many! It was soft but supportive. I didn’t want to get out of it, but the breakfast basket brought to me each morning helped get me motivated.

Both bathrooms were stylishly decorated and of great size. Each had a walk-in shower and some excellent Greek toiletries, including sunscreen! Now, I feel like every Greek hotel should be offering sunscreen during the summer months. For people who have

The kitchen area in Sigma is more of a kitchenette, but it definitely has everything you need to make a great meal with some local Sifnos products! Even though many meals had been provided, I made some eggs one morning; it was just like being at home. Sigma staff can also assist you with stocking the kitchen in advance for an additional charge. Trust me when I say they have great taste in food choices.

Other Residences

While I couldn’t stay in all the residences, not that I would have said no to that, I did get to peek inside a few of them. Each residence is decorated in the same modern Cycladic style of natural Greek island colors. The decor is simple but comfortable and still feels luxurious.

Sigma would be an excellent location for a family reunion. Each family could have its own space but easily walk to their family’s place on the property.

Most of the residences feel similar, only differing in size, but a few of them have their unique amenities. Themonia has a private swimming pool and is situated a bit away from the rest. Exambela offers a hot tub with privacy curtains.

Book your residence at Sigma here.

Sigma Amenities

Feeling like you might fall over the edge to the valley below is the infinity edge pool at Sigma. Not only is the pool luxurious, but it offers great views of Kastro and the surrounding area. There are a variety of sun loungers, chairs, and umbrellas to relax on or space the sun.

Enjoy the view while working out in the most well-equipped outdoor gym I have ever seen! The outdoor gym also faces Kastro, and if you elect to be up early, you will see the sunrise here.

Sigma Residences offers some amenities for an extra charge, but it’s definitely worth it if you need or want these things while on vacation. They can pick you up and drop you off at the ferry port, arrange a helicopter tour, provide a rib boat tour, and much more. No matter what you want to do, Sigma can assist you with the arrangements and offer the best tips.

They can even arrange for you to have an outdoor massage overlooking that beautiful valley—the ultimate luxury.

Parking is available if you rent a car in Sifnos. However, the spaces are not near the individual residences, so don’t rely on them being close. Don’t worry; they will assist you with your suitcases if you need them.

How to Get to Sigma Residences

The best way to get to Sigma Residences is by ferry from Athens. While there are several ferry ports in the Athens area, you want to choose Piraeus. Both the fast and slow ferries leave from here to go to Sifnos.

Book your ferry ticket to Sifnos here.

There is no airport in Sifnos, but you can fly to Milos and take the ferry from there. With either option, book your ferry ticket or flight back to Athens the day before your flight home. This will give you some cushion in case the ferries are canceled.

Sigma can pick you up and drop you off at the ferry terminal in Sifnos. If you do rent a car, the drive to Sigma is easy, and as I mentioned, there is parking.

Things to do in Sifnos near Sigma

Sigma is isolated but not far from many of the main things to do in Sifnos. Sifnos has some of the best hiking trails in the Cycladic islands. One of the hiking trails is located right next to the residences. There is even a gate to the trail from the property.

The villages of Apollonia and Artemonas are about a 15-minute drive or less away. Each offers some of the best restaurants on the island. Apollonia has excellent shopping as well.

For those who love a beautiful blue-domed Greek church, Sifnos abounds with plenty of them to see. Many of them are in the villages mentioned above. Or a bit further afield at the Chrysopigi Monastery. If you haven’t rented a car, the staff can arrange a taxi to take you anywhere you want to go in Sifnos.
