Who knew, there's a river [practically] in the backyard! we picked up lunch from the closest vegetarian friendly cafe, ate in the sun & had ourselves a mini hike. if getting a house in LA takes too much longer, we may just get really comfy here ;)

how 'bout that game sunday, right?
just kidding. well, i did watch a tiny bit of it, actually.
we invited a few friends over, for brunch on sunday, and my friend texted me back & said her husband was secrectly hoping to watch the game too. so i said "nate, is there a game on this sunday?" and he said said "yeah, the super bowl"
doh!

so brunch plans quickly turned into an all day hang sesh. my sister & her kids came too, and my friends brought their kids. so cute to watch kids hanging out. so awkward at first!
we went on a walk to see the goats & noticed the tree rope across the street was still there with a pile of hay as a landing pad! i don't know if we were trespassing or what, but i do know how much fun everyone had. fearless, awesome little kids.

in other news
coop is still fat. & loves to purr in the sun.

& in more other news. i'm going to try and post a recipe once a week. nothing will change here, i'll still post regular life photos, but i'll try & add some recipes.
i make food often, and sometimes the food turns out pretty spectacular [sometimes just pretty good, ha]
anyway. first up, to break the ice, a little lunch i made myself the other day.

Mango Avocado Lettuce... tacos?

chopped up the following

1 mango

1/2 [or whole] avocado

an apple
3-5 dates

1-2 stems green onion

handful of favorite sprouts

mint & cilantro

squeeze:

1 meyer lemon

sprinkle:

a pinch of sea salt

a pinch of cayenne ;)

scoop some of the salad onto romaine lettuce leaves. & wa-la!

next time i'll probably add cucumber, and try a peach instead of mango...or both! who knows!!

simple little lunch, so easy but feels and tastes special.

i get a lot of inspiration for recipes from this raw chef i watch on youtube. [check her out if you're interested in that Dara Dubinet]
sometimes i'm inspired by, simply, what's in the fridge. or something i see on the food network!

oh & btw, i didn't just eat those four little pieces of lettuce, i ate this entire plate of them :)

so, we're still floating in purgatory. only a couple weeks more of going between our families' homes.
most of the time we're in sacramento. the weather has been so nice here & our families are really sweet too, so really it just feels like vacation...but it's gone a little longer than planned...& we're working while on vacation... so it's not like vacation at all.
yeah, you get it. ha ha

well, first things first, here's a little sneak peak at our new place! if everything goes as planned, in just a couple short weeks, we'll be hauling our shite up those stairs (we're leaning towards paying someone to do it...)

did i mention there is an orange tree and tangerine tree and umm... one of those... how you say... avocado trees on the property! anyway, more on all of that later.

it's been really fun to visit our LA friends too. some of their families are growing ;)

we made dinner at our friend's house, & came up with a pretty fun idea, you should try sometime!
i made the dough, rolled it out, and everyone put the toppings they wanted on their part of the pizza. turned out really cool. (mmm... looks so good right now. thinking about dinner while doing this post)

maybe that's what everyone who's getting "fed up" with LA should do... move to bed stuy in brooklyn for a year,[during the worst winter in (what was it...) 100 years(?)] theeen come back to LA, see how you feel. not to dis brooklyn too much more, b/c we had a lot of fun there too, but i sorta feel now like that was a prison sentence in a way... ok maybe not that bad, but that's just me, right now. talk to me in a couple years, see what i'm saying then. lol. jk. lmao. brb. hi.

my friend is married now.
we've been traveling up and down the coast every week. (went to the redwood forest most recently!)
my other friend darkened my hair for me.
nate started helping me run my etsy shop! (now featuring clothing for guys too...more to come)

hi y'all. i ain't dead...yet! just getting used to being homeless!

pretty lucky we have really nice families that are letting us invade their privacy while we continue our search for the perfect place. we've actually found three 'perfect places' but they were stolen right from under our noses! waiting to hear back from another one. i know we could get an "in-between" place... but i know us. we'll end up making this 'in-between' place a little more permanent than i'd like.
between driving to LA every weekend, i've been able to work from home. which is pretty cool.
i have always wondered how that would work out for me, and if i would be able to stay motivated & actually work work. well, i am work working & i love the peace & quite & my two hairless buddy ol' pals by my side everyday. (they're both sleeping on my legs right now....ok, cat lady....)
anyway.
my friend leeza darkened my hair last week (or...was it the week before that, already?!) & i love it! i was a little hesitant, b/c i love white hair so much, but since i'm trying to grow it out (for now), i decided to darken the shade so i don't have to keep frying my hair & (hopefully) grow some thicker hair. since you were dying to know the detes!!

it feels/looks very extreme to me (in the mirror) but no one really notices & actually, it's already a lot lighter than before.
i say... it's a work in progress, we are setting up session number two for my hair...maybe this week!
oh... and there's always the bangs dilemma .... grow or cut grow or cut?

we discovered some goats the other day on our walk. (those are goats, right? ha ha...wow) they all came over to us (behind a fence) & some of them looked like they were smiling. i really loved them. we'll have to bring them apples or something next time. (....who doesn't like apples..........right?)
we saw a tree rope & we couldn't resist. SO FUN! well, and scary!! but i did it too. i put it up on instagram (agalssjar) & my friend said i looked like a rag doll. that's pretty right on! :)

new shoes! love them.
& my dragon's egg pendant.... perfect addition to my everyday little trinket necklaces.

if i wasn't so obsessed with LA, i would live in sacramento. pretty pretty!

i feel a different kind of happiness when i'm in california.
maybe the sun is different over here… maybe it's seeing family, or all the avocados, i don't know, but i like it.

we're still looking for a home in LA. i'm actually really enjoying the process (even tho we've already struck out once, with the first place we wanted).
i'm excited about rediscovering LA. go away for a year & 1/2 & things change! (not *that* much, but still, it's different now.)
we are heading to LA, to look at a few places, just before xmas. we're thinking maybe less people will be looking, so maybe we have a better chance?
hope our theory pans out .

during our transition, you're going to be forced to look at pictures of everyday stuff.
today it's of my niece & nephew, my friend & her family, my kitty, my husband "my" office.

ps. just updated our etsy shop with some goodies. the plan is to have 100 things up all the time.

pps. i love this american life! every couple years i get re-obsessed with it. it's great for road trips, too! listen to interesting stories, and ira glass, & the time
just flies by.

hi guys
it's been so nice to have a change of pace, like this. we're currently spending most our time in sacramento, ca. we have family here, & also family three hours south of here, fresno, where we stop on our way to LA.
we found a really great place in LA, now we're just waiting to hear back... hope we get it!

i've been watching lots of hgtv, & really want to break down a wall sometime....sometime soon. (ps. hubba hubba property brothers)
spending time with family & seeing old friends has been awesome. most of our siblings have kids now, so we've been loving being around the little guys :) & they're all so cute and sweet!

the longer i didn't update the more pictures i had piling up! a good photographer is one that can edit their work. it's so hard to do. [edit, as in cut down on the amount of pics]

we're now in california, looking for places to live, in LA. i feel like the hardest part is over (packing, getting rid of shistuff, cleaning & cleaning) now for the fun part!
we'll be in LA friday & saturday... any friends want to volunteer and let us crash at their place? lol. (but seirously)

spent some of the day taking pictures of clothing, eating & cleaning up.
nate bought frozen, gluten free, vegan waffles & i put them in the oven this morning (seems excessive to use an oven for a few waffles, but we've sent most of our things to california already, so we only have the things we're either packing, giving away or selling, left) then put tons of blueberries, banana slices & warmed maple syrup (thanks jamie for introducing me to warmed maple syrup, yum!) on top.

--right now, we're trying to decide where to go for dinner. the last few nights i made pizza....three nights in a row, to be exact. not b/c we didn't have anything else to eat, but b/c we were both obsessed with pizza! (shocker, i know..)(...not sure why that's a shocker...)
the recipe i used was told to me by our neighbors, over a bottle of wine & delicious thin crust pizza!

1 1/2 Cups Water

1yeast packet

4cups of flour (3white 1 whole wheat...i used all whole wheat)

4 tbsp of evoo

some salt [i did 1 tbsp]

some sugar [i did 1 tbsp]

mix together, put in a large bowl & put plastic wrap over it.
best if you let it rise over night!

one night i made it & used it right away, it still works & tastes good. but leaving it over night, makes it extra airy, crispy & soft (lol) all the same time.
the best topping was a saute' of a bunch of leeks & mozzarella (i used the daiya mozzarella) & scattered red pepper & red onion on top (only b/c we had some left over)

we went to see kurt vile perform this weekend. we had amazing seats, front row of the mezzanine, & had a great night, despite the $10 beers!
(what was this a baseball game?!)
[we used scoutmob to find a place to eat, & found Pommes Frites, offering 100% a "cone" of fries.........i mean, come on!
but see? now i know a place that serves really delicious potato fries, late at night!
scoutmob's the way to go!]
anyway, back to kurt vile....
nate turned me on to him, & my favorite thing to listen to these days!
ALSO he is my new hairsparation. me...want...long thick hair.

we've been here in brooklyn for just a little over a year, & really had a great time getting to know this place. it's become clear to both of us that it's not for us...not now, anyway.
the day we made the decision to move back, was followed by a couple weeks of the best weather, ever. i thought, no, shoot, we made the wrong decision.

but no. i'm going to just love coming to visit nyc.
i grew up in spokane, washington, where i had four seasons. but you wont believe how quickly you get unused to bad weather, living in los angeles.
i miss the (west coast) ocean, the fresh salads, 70 degrees most of the year & just the relaxed california lifestyle.

california here we come!!

november five

so far this lovely november day has consisted of walking to get a juice then deciding to go to the grocery store to get celery instead & make the juice ourselves. when we walked in the juice place, in our 'hood, nate decided it wasn't good enough for me (it looked dirty, and didn't make me think of fresh juice), so he started heading for the door and said 'oh, you know? we should probably go get cash,"
i knew what he was trying to do, but i like to mess with him, so i said "huh? why? i gave you my wallet with cash in it" :)

we put celery, pineapple & a tangerine in our juice. i normally fill it up with more greens, but it's fun to have super yummy fruit juice too sometimes!

nate asked me if i liked half his hair pulled back like that, and i said yes, that's how the guys in game of thrones wear their hair,hubba hubba ;) [he looks all serious in that second like he's auditioning for G.O.T] (anyone else nerdy enough to read/watch that?)

well, we have lots of chores to do around the house today (ew), and both of us have been putting it all off until now (8pm!)

the leaves are still mostly green, but the snow still decided to show up early! i was in the shower when nate started freaking out saying the snowflakes were HUGE and i better hurry up b/c it's gonna stop. so i rushed out... took pictures, but the snow didn't stop....for hours.

our heater isn't gonig to start working until tomorrow, so we went out and bought a little space heater, b/c our little hairless cats do get cold!
as we walked thru the snow, and slushy rain that was coming down, carrying the space heater and bags of groceries, we remembered what it was we don't like about nyc.

it's interesting how our apt felt so foreign to us that first day we moved in, but now really feels like a cozy little home! you really can make anywhere you want, your home.

our pal brando and his band fidlar (noisy, and normally i wouldn't like, but it's really grown on me! i've been to couple shows, and there i am loving carmalita & max can't surf).

you're probably like wooah, who's that homeless guy on the right? that would be the lead singer. he wasn't feeling so good by then, i think they had played 6 shows in 3 days for cmj.

cajla flew in for the weekend too!

anyway-
today was a much nicer day, and we remember why it is we love nyc so much. it was 40 degrees outside, sunny, most of the snow had melted away, and we walked about 4 miles. to our friends house for vegan pancakes, then coffee, then to goodwill (this time to find nate parts for his costume for halloween), grocery store, burritos... i wish tomorrow was sunday again.

& yep, i put that disgusting random thing on the side of the street on my head. b/c i'm...cool like that.
(probably not the smartest thing to do, since there is a bed bug epidemic here...)

salad booooooring

i don't care. i love salad so much. it's my favorite food.
i think people that hate salad, just haven't had a good one...

it was two oclock the other day, and i had eaten 3 hours earlier, and dinner was 3 hours away, so i needed a good hold me over salad.

in my kitchen, i had lettuce, red pepper, onion, asian apple, avocado, a tomato [from our tiny fire escape garden] and toasted pepitas (aka pumpkin seeds).

so i tossed all of that in my [awesome] wooden salad bowl (i got for my bday) (everything just seems so much better when prepared in that bowl).

for the dressing, i used avocado, tahini, apple cider vinegar, garlic, agave & lime. [adapted from dara dabinet's recipe]

dressings are so easy & fun to make & it truly so much better tasting than bottled dressing. if you don't like avocado [which cARaZy! u can experiment & add some evoo or omit it completely].

i want to start a photo project called the real nyc, pictures of all the things you don't normally see posted. one thing no one mentioned about nyc to me, was all the garbage everywhere. california is so much more advanced as far as their garbage and recycling goes.
here you have to sort all your recycling. paper/cardboard, glass, plastic, aluminum.... & things i thought were recyclable are not.
well, anyway! yesterday [& today is looking similar] was beautiful! fall days like that remind me how much i love this place.

nate's brother & his wife came to visit us for the weekend. we went all over the city, as their tour guide. i love doing that, b/c you get to go to places you don't go to normally. i think one of the highlights of their visit was going to see a touring show at the union square theater called traces &
o. m. g .... nate just kept saying 'i think it's magic, but i know it's real!'
if you're in the area, or they come to a city near you, go see them!

we waited in line at the shake shack for over an hour....actually over two hours...

was it worth it? nope. i don't think we would have waited if we new it would take that long. i guess places mentioned on the food network get perrty popular...

[i've wanted to go to serendipity since well, since i saw serendipity (just watched the trailer, ha ha...doesn't look so good)]

this is siamese kitten can fit in the palm of your hand. there's a lady at union square with about 50 abandoned kittens! he was just one of them.

if you live in nyc, and want a little friend, go get one!

i remember when i first came to visit new york, and how public transportation seemed really fun... (lol)

As much as i love simple outfits, with just nudes, or a mix of blacks/charcoal/grays , I will forever love bright colors!

I need to get some new [cute/unique] tights and ankle booties this fall/winter.

I've really been wanting a pair of Rachel Comey Mars Booties, or something along those lines, but man, i just can't get myself to spend the $$! So I decided, instead of getting in line and getting a pair of RC boots, [but if i had those, he he, i'd be happily in line] i'm going to do some vintage boot hunting.

There's a really great boutique called Malin Landaeus, in Williamsburg, and they carry the best ankle booties all different styles, & in great vintage condition. if you ever find yourself in brooklyn, go check that shop out!

i finally joined foursquare. i am really upset i just now got into it! my friend sent me a link to all the restaurants he's checked in at, in the last year, and there was a map with all those places pinpointed...& i thought "but i want to know where i've been!"
so i'm now on there, checking in everywhere i go. i even checked in at our neighborhood grocery store... i'm two days away from being the mayor.... yeah....

another cool app i have is scoutmob , i highly recommend this app, if you just moved to nyc or want to get out more (or any city they're doing this in). i've found out about many good restaurants this way. they update it daily, with places you can get 50% off the bill. that's pretty cool.
last night we went to lodge, for happy hour drinks & dinner. we've been there before, but not for dinner. & i thought of the restaurant, only b/c it was on the list of restaurants with the deal.

it's finally getting cool enough to wear my rachel comey hat, a friend of mine let me have (but can always have it back!) i put it on backwards yesterday, and liked it that way too! such a good hat! now that i think of it, same friend gave me the trench too!

for my birthday, another friend (haha, i have pretty good friends i guess!) gave me a pair of vintage justin boots. she said she ordered them for herself, and they are a size too big for her, and just right for me. lucky lucky me! (the tie-dyed tights, i also got for my bday from my other bff, nate :) )

there are a couple great bars in redhook(one of our favorite parts of brooklyn), where they play live music, and serve our favorite beers, and isn't too crowded on a friday night. one of those is sunnies bar. went there last weekend.
it's right by the water, and so quiet out. they also have fireworks, in red hook, on random nights....

nate got this magazine for me. and i love it.
i read it, then went thru out our house and took care of all of our plants. ha.

it's very inspiring and beautiful. each issue will focus on taking care of a certain plant with detailed intstructions.
you're probably wondering, couldn't you just find all this info on the internet? yes... yes you can, but will it nicely laid out, with nicely currated artwork and articles? i didn't think so ;)

my favorite page, of course. (cutting this one out of the magazine and hanging it on my wall...duh.)

one thing, i will have to mention, is that there was a typo. (nate's probably rolling his eyes right now, b/c i can't seem to drop it! ha ha. well, i just think typos are ok on blogs and things that aren't really important, but come on! this is a $20 magazine! triple check your work...right?)

hey guys,
it was my birthday, friday. normally, i'd prefer to spend a birthday with just nate, or possibly a couple close friends at an indian restaurant (ha, last few bdays). this time around i thought it would be a cool idea to cook dinner and invite friends over to our place. i did start running low on time b/c everything takes longer in nyc than you plan! it was a last minute idea, but it turned out really fun.

dinner was leaning towards a vietnamese theme, (nate even got chop sticks for everyone) i made broken rice (which i've only seen at one restaurant, in LA called gingergrass) roasted veggies, special vietnamese sauce (nauc cham suace, which is absolutely delicious. get the recipe here, best sauce for rice, & it's oil free too. i add more lime than the recipe says & i use agave instead of sugar)& salad...friends brought babycakes (vegan&gluten free) cupcakes! my friend eddie helped me make the salad, and set everything up, love 'em!

we turned our music room into a dining room. somehow made our entire apt feel much bigger!
we left the "dinner table" set up, just b/c.

since it was my birthday, i decided to force everyone into playing a few rounds of charades...yep, still my favorite game.

oh yes, it's finally fall weather around here. mid 60s weather. we are keeping our ac in our window for another wk or so, b/c we hear it's gonna be hot this wknd! anyway, while it's chilly, i'll stick to long skirts and drapey sweaters.

the hat i'm wearing is the pendleton wool hat. nate bought it as a "share" for us....we have been known to share clothing...

we went to the PS1 museum book fair, this last wknd. we saw a lot of cool art, and i loved pretty much everybooth, and wanted to get one of everything, then be locked away with only the new books i bought... yeah, probably not.
there was one thing we really wanted to get, it wasn't a book, but a huge photograph. we both loved it, and found their website where it's available, i hope we get it soon. i feel like this is what's been missing off our wall this whole time.

i saw this cat trying to climb out of the window, so i took a picture and said "what do you think you're doing?" and he/she said "meeeeeow!" and ran back inside.good times..

for brunch on sunday, i made tofu scramble, a salad & some toast. it was one of those meals nate wanted me to remember & make again soon. i have this habit of making new things all the time, and forgetting to remake the things we've been liking.

[saute' onions, peppers & garlic. add mashed firm tofu. saute for a little while, then add soy sauce+crushed garlic+a lil evoo+agave+tumeric cook for a few minutes, until it's nice and toasty, add chopped kale for like last couple minutes... mmmmm]

k. since you're really asking for it, heeeeeeerre's rozzzy!!! photo cred to nate!! so cute. it was like his dream home for a few days (that's all i could stand, a huge box full of paper in the middle of our living room)

I decided to share a few good products i've been using and love.

1. REN day face cream - paraben free, lightly rose scented moisturizing day cream. love it. very light, and doesn't have parabens... so hard to find a cream that's good & paraben free.

2. Phylosophy eye hope eye cream- paraben free, light...don't know if it's working b/c i just got it, but it doesn't irritate my skin or eyes, so i'm hoping that means there aren't too many bad chemicals in it... why do they put bad things into skin care products? i dont understand...

3. blinc mascara!- i've been looking for non-waterproof mascara, that stays on w/o coming off on my face during the day. i don't like waterproof mascara, b/c it's hard to get off w/o make up remover...i suppose that is the point of wp mascara. anyway, this stuff is awesome, it "tubes" your eyelashes, so when you wash your face at night, you literally pull off the mascara... and it's in the shape of your eyelashes. my sister used it & i asked her if she liked it, she said "no, b/c i think my eyelashes came out" ...meanwhile, it was just the cast of her eyelashes. .. i'm sure there are weird chemicals in this one, but i searched a few of the main ingredients and they didn't come up as harmful. & also, i have sensitive eyes & they don't water or anything when i put this on.

4. bobbi brown gel eyeliner -espresso ink - love this stuff! stays on your eyes all day, and washes off easily at night. you can do smokey or very bold lines with this. i also use it for my eye brows! works amazing, and also stays on all day.

ok. that's it, i'm still in search of the following good make up items :
-great concealer, that stays on all day...
-light cover up
-good night cream
