class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

According to a survey conducted by baby bottle maker Avent, 50% of new moms say that they try to avoid breastfeeding in public when possible as it makes them uncomfortable.

Over the last several years, breastfeeding advocates have made breastfeeding not only acceptable but a legal right in cafes, restaurants and shops. Even despite all this, in a survey of 3,000 mums, it was found that one in four don't feel at ease exposing their breasts in public and would rather use bottles to feed their babies.

The survey also stated that:

Twenty six percent of mums said they would only do it when they have no alternative.

More than half of women who participated in the survey found public breastfeeding the hardest to master

Only one in three confessed of not feeling shy

Three in four said they felt worried their baby may not have had enough milk

"Getting started with breastfeeding can be very challenging for a new mum especially as it is a whole new experience for her and baby," the Daily Express quoted Vicki Scott, feeding and wellbeing advisor for the Avent brand.

He added: If a baby is constantly feeding, or the mum is sore, it could be the baby is only nipple-feeding. A midwife or health visitor is the first person to ask for advice."

Women are advised by health professionals to feed newborn babies for around 20 minutes, every two to three hours. But this can be reduced to once every three to four hours within a month or two.
This is really disheartening, and I find it quite interesting that a bottle company was the one to conduct this survey. Breastfeeding is best for both mother and child, period. Instead of publishing surveys on how women feel or how society is making them feel about breastfeeding, more should be done to encourage and educate young mothers.
Recycled Rubber Tile Flooring

A program that is partially funded by the State of California, Swisstrax’s recycled rubber flooring tiles project produces interlocking recycled flooring tiles made from PolyDyne Engineered Rubber Powder, a product derived from recycled rubber tires.

Buyers of specialty flooring products are unique and demand superior performance, and Swisstrax states their recycled rubber flooring tiles are designed to be one of the longest-lasting, highest value flooring systems in the world, and they have laboratory testing to prove the strength and durability of their garage floor tiles.

Randy Nelson, Owner of Swisstrax flooring tiles, noted “Our goal is to remove hundreds of thousands of tires from landfills annually while keeping millions of cubic yards of recyclable materials from reaching those landfills. On an annual basis, we help reduce greenhouse gases by millions of tons of carbon."

Since manufacturing began in the United States, Swisstrax has been chosen by AVIS, Mini USA dealerships nationwide as their garage flooring of choice for showrooms. US Armed Forces, Ferrari, Bobby Unser Racing, Grand Am, American Le Mans, Mini USA, Ford Motor Company, and most recently, SNAP-ON and Shelby Automobiles are just some of the clients to take advantage of the distinctive look of the Swisstrax’s garage flooring line.
Call2Recycle announced last week (June 9), that British Columbians will now be able to recycle any household battery at nearly 1,500 collection locations across the province. Call2Recycle® has collected more than 143,000 kilograms of rechargeable batteries in British Columbia since 1997, and the program was recently chosen as the first government-mandated collection program for all household batteries – including alkaline – by the British Columbia Ministry of Environment.

“British Columbia is leading the way in promoting environmental stewardship by launching the first government-mandated household battery program in North America,” said John Yap, British Columbia Minister of State for Climate Action. “We fully support Call2Recycle’s efforts to recycle batteries and cell phones into new products and keep them out of our solid waste stream, which will help the environment and the economy.”

Zak Designs' Eco line is extremely unique! The texture of the products come from the patented process used to infuse Rattan wood – a rapidly growing plant similar to bamboo – with melamine and create a product unlike any other on the market. The process also gives the products their organic color tone that is so popular with today’s earth-conscientious consumers.

For 2010, Zak will introduce into the offering a large 3 qt and a small 24oz colander, a large scoop as well as measuring cups and measuring spoons. The additions will round out the existing line that includes nested serving and mixing bowls, mini prep bowls, a serve tray, batter bowl and an ice cream scoop. With the new additions to the line, consumers can carry the Eco theme throughout their kitchen, and prove that texture has as much a place in the culinary tools as function and fashion.

Zak stays at the forefront of emerging fashion, color and design trends from around the world with their offices around the world. They have incorporated those styles into modern and innovative tabletop and kitchen prep collections. A clinical study on the effectiveness of using pine nut oil in the comprehensive treatment of patients with arterial hypertension, was released by Pinenutoil.org recently and I found it quite interesting.

In patients with arterial hypertension who are receiving basic hypertension treatment, the consumption of a 17.5 g daily dose of Siberian Pine Nut Oil demonstrated a cholesterol lowering effect, was accompanied by the normalization of the lipid spectrum of the blood and systolic pressure, and a decrease in excess body mass.

The prime objective in treating patients with arterial hypertension is to lower patients’ elevated blood pressure and thereby reduce the risk of the onset of cardiovascular complications that occur, as is well known, on the background of an elevated level of cholesterol in the blood and general obesity.

In the study medical professionals used Siberian Pine Nut Oil in their testing.

Results:

In patients of the first group, after one month, a substantial lowering of the level of LDL cholesterol, triglycerides, and the atherogenic index was detected (Table 3), after three months the lipid reducing effect of Siberian Pine Nut Oil under Siberian Pine Nut Oil trade mark was even more pronounced. The level of HDL cholesterol in patients who received Siberian Pine Nut Oil under Siberian Pine Nut Oil trade mark reliably increased after one month by 35%, and after three months, by 29% from the initial point. As a result, indicators, such as the level of total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol and triglycerides reached the target value, while the level of LDL cholesterol was close to it. The atherogenic index, although decreased by 40%, did not reach the target value (2.6), but came to 2.9.

In the control group after three months only a tendency to the lowering of the level of total cholesterol (p=0.06) was observed, without substantial changes in the remaining indicators. As can be seen from Table 4, in patients of the basic group the lowering of the systolic pressure was more pronounced (by 19.5%) than in the control group (by 10.6%), in this case the diastolic pressure became lower in the groups approximately in equal measure. The lowering of the body mass index was also more pronounced in patients in the first group.

Aromatherapy is something which I have always wanted to further my education in. With their beautiful scents and tremendous health benefits, these oils can actually help to treat various illnesses and evoke strong emotional reactions.

“Smell is the only one of the five senses directly linked to the limbic lobe—the emotional control center—of the brain. From anxiety to depression, fatigue to stress, essential oils have long been appreciated for their uplifting, calming, and clarifying effects on emotional wellness.”

Dating back to 4500 BC, Ancient Egyptians used essential oils to treat illnesses and help to perform rituals and religious ceremonies in temples and pyramids. The three oils which are still commonly used today - cedarwood, myrrh and frankincense - were used in the embalming process. There are also more than 188 references in the Bible to oils that were used as protection against disease and for anointing and healing the sick.

A couple of months ago, I jumped on the opportunity to review Young Living’s essential oils. I had heard many positive things about Young Living and was excited to test out their products.

Young Living Therapeutic Grade essential oils are pure, natural and unadulterated. They are not to be confused with synthetic, perfume-grade oils that smell pretty, these are the real thing!

Along with their large array of oils such as Lavender, Chamomile, Peppermint and other single scents, Young Living also sells blends which can be a life-saver (and a money saver) for those who don’t wish to spend a lot of money all at once on single bottles.

I tested both the Peace and Calming as well as the “Magnify Your Purpose’ oil blends and was extremely happy with both.

The Peace & Calming contains Tangerine, Ylang Ylang, Blue Tansy, Orange and Patchouli oils which encourage calmness and relaxation. Rubbing 1-2 drops on my wrists or behind my ears helped me to relax at the end of a long day. This oil was especially beneficial when giving my daughters a bath in the evening as it relaxed and wound them both down after a day of fun and excitement.

Magnifiy Your Purpose contains Sandalwood, Rosewood, Sage, Nutmeg, Patchouli, Cinnamon bark and Ginger. It “helps foster a positive attitude, encouraging you to rise above adversity, seize the initiative, overcome procrastination and self-pity, and magnify your life's purpose”.

Compared to the many other essential oil brands I have tried in the past (5-6 at least), Young Living has exceeded them all in quality and performance.

During Melanoma Awareness Month

The Melanoma Research Foundation has launched a new campaign to educate teens about the dangers of tanning during the Melanoma Awareness month. The "Take a Stand, Don't Tan!" campaign provides teens with the facts about the health risks associated with tanning through media tools such as Facebook and YouTube.

Melanoma is one of the fastest growing cancers worldwide, Exposure to UV radiation such as sunlight and indoor tanning beds, is one of the major risk factors for most melanomas.

“This isn’t a cancer that waits for people to grow old before it strikes and teens need to understand the health risks before they get in a tanning bed,” said Tim Turnham, executive director of the MRF. “Melanoma is the second most common type of cancer in teens and young adults and the leading cause of cancer death in women 25 to 30 years old.“

"Recent research has shown that using tanning beds before age 35 increases your risk of developing melanoma by 75 percent and occasionally using tanning beds can triple your chances. Last year, 69,000 Americans were diagnosed with the disease, resulting in one death every single hour."

The importance of addressing sun safety in the youth population was recently further reinforced by a new partnership between the MRF and "Cosmopolitan" magazine to raise awareness and funds for melanoma research. "Cosmo" readers will receive an awareness bracelet with a $10 donation to the MRF. The fundraising drive is part the magazine’s ongoing “Practice Safe Sun” campaign to combat the high rate of skin cancer among young women.
IKEA has put a list together of their top 10 tips for living a more sustainable life.

Top 10 tips from IKEA to Live a More Sustainable Life at Home

1. Choose toys that are safe for kids and better for our planet. The MULA collection is a series of safe and durable wooden toys that stimulate children's creativity.

2. Opt for solar lighting, both indoors and out. The SUNNAN work lamp combines low-energy LED technology with solar panels. For every SUNNAN sold in IKEA stores worldwide, one will be donated through UNICEF to children in Pakistan. These lamps enable children to read, write and study in the evenings, even if their homes have no electricity.

3. Cut down on food waste by storing and using leftovers. Using food storage containers such as RARITET can help cut down on wasted CO2 emissions from food production, as well as waste.

4. Use less water. Make sure your faucets are using as little water as possible. The RINGSKÄR tap comes with a flow control function, which can adjust the water flow in two steps and reduce water use by 30 per cent.

5. Recycle at home. The RATIONELL easy-to-clean sorting bins help organize and recycle household waste simply and easily.

6. Dispose of batteries and compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) in a responsible way. Since 2001, IKEA has offered a "Free Take Back" recycling program - even for non-IKEA brands.

7. Go organic whenever possible. Organic agriculture excludes the use of synthetic chemical fertilizers and pesticides, and strives to maintain biodiversity and ecological balance. Organic SYLT jams are
one of the many organic food products sold in the Swedish Food Market at IKEA.

8. Buy furniture and accessories made from waste materials. The LUSY BLOM cushion is stuffed with leftover material from the production of other IKEA products.

9. Skip the dryer and let clothing air-dry. Instead of using an energy heavy dryer, hang laundry on the TVÄTTA drying rack instead.

10. Unplug computers and TVs when not in use. A power-strip that can be turned on and off, such as KOPPLA, prevents energy loss and can save up to 10 per cent on your electric bill.

IKEA has also recently launched the Never Ending List, a program that outlines the leading home furnishings retailer's commitment to taking social and environmental responsibility towards its customers, coworkers and suppliers.

Over 100 stories of IKEA's sustainable accomplishments and environmental tips can be found throughout thestore, and on-line at www.ikea.ca/theneverendinglist.

When it comes to weddings, most couples are reluctant to sacrifice anything short of the best for their special day. Shifts have since occurred in the wedding industry with couples becoming more interested in sustainable, practical and budget-friendly suggestions and ideas for their big day. The world's first eco-chic wedding resale website, Recycled Bride has defined a "sustainable wedding" as an event that includes elements which encourage positive social, financial and environmental growth.

"We're seeing the emergence of so many exciting wedding trends that reflect the big cultural, political and economic shifts happening in the world today." says Tracy DiNunzio, Founder and CEO of Recycled Bride. "Couples are using their weddings as an opportunity to promote their personal and financial well-being, help the environment, and support their communities. Recycled Bride is proud to offer these insights and trend forecasts based on our unique position on the cutting edge of the sustainability movement in weddings.

Recycled Bride has put together a list of the Top 10 Sustainable Wedding Trends for 2010:

1. There's No Place Like Home - Local is the hot word for sustainable weddings in 2010. From venues to menus, couples are making efforts to reduce their carbon footprint and cut their budgets by keeping celebrations "all in the neighborhood". Backyard weddings are helping guests cut back on travel, and caterers are responding to clients' demands for more locally produced food. Even wedding favors and decorations will be sought out from local artisans and shops.

2. Alterna-florals - The hippest weddings are in full bloom with flower alternatives like sustainable succulents and DIY paper flowers. Conventional cut flowers are expensive, plus they're grown with pesticides and have a huge carbon footprint, so couples are seeking alternative ways to decorate. Many will eschew the floral look altogether by using soy candles, fruit, and found objects for table centerpieces and bouquets.

3. The Hourglass Bride - String beans in sheath dresses are so yesterday. Inspired by voluptuous newlyweds like Christina Hendricks of Mad Men, Salma Hayek, and Beyonce, brides are embracing their curves in wedding dresses that emphasize a well-rounded figure. Many are even flaunting -- or creating -- an hourglass silhouette with gowns that sport belted waists, peplums, and plunging necklines. This is the year that women will ditch their grueling "Buff Bride" workouts in favor of kinder, gentler activities like yoga, and celebrate their naturally feminine shapes.

4. Wedding Planning Goes Digital - From blogger brides to Facebook-ing florists, wedding planning has become an online community affair. "More and more, brides are turning to wedding forums to look for fresh wedding ideas and the latest wedding trends. Together, brides and vendors make these forums an incredible wedding planning resource to connect with others who are passionate about weddings." says Christine Dyer, Founder of BridalTweet.com. Brides increasingly connect with each other for advice, support, and even labor trades on community-based social networks like Give Get Nation and BrideShare.

5. Not-So-Mellow Yellow - The hottest color of 2010 is also the warmest. Sunshine-y yellow pairs beautifully with cobalt blue and violet for an electrifying palette that's bright and bold. Or combine pale yellows with white, ivory, and fresh green tones for a sunny and natural color theme. Many succulents bear yellow blossoms, making this cheerful color an easy choice for sustainable bouquets and centerpieces.

6. The Times Are A-Changing - Saturday night weddings aren't the only game in town. Brides and grooms are scheduling their nuptials on weeknights, Sundays, and even early mornings in 2010. It's less expensive to book a venue or caterer on "off days", and as telecommuting becomes more popular, guests are gaining flexibility in their schedules. Weddings we'll see this year will include sunrise affairs followed by romantic brunches, and chic mid-week dinner parties.

7. Bright Bridal Shoes - Forget the white and ivory satin slippers and "dyeable" sandals of wedding days gone by. Bridal shoes in bright and bold hues like fuschia, emerald green and electric blue are hot hot hot in 2010. Colored shoes are a chic and stylish surprise under a white wedding gown, plus they're more versatile than white satin and can be worn again with a little black dress.

8. Flexible Registries - The registry has been reinvented by sites like www.AlternativeGiftRegistry.org, and this year we'll see many brides and grooms skipping the Stepford registries in favor of more flexible options. More couples will opt for "open" online registries where they can request everything from charitable donations to eco-friendly housewares to cash for a down payment on a home.

9. Unexpected Seating - At both receptions and ceremonies, seating arrangements are being switched up. Think scattered chairs and benches for ceremonies, and long communal tables, clustered couches, and bar tables with stools for receptions. No more will the family and friends of the bride and groom be kept apart by rigid seating assignments at separate tables. This year's seating arrangements will encourage guests to mix, mingle, dine and dance.

10. Something Old, Something New - The hottest sustainable trend for 2010 (and our personal favorite, of course!) is incorporating recycled elements like gently used wedding dresses and bridesmaids dresses, pre-owned wedding decorations, and vintage bridal jewelry into weddings. Sites like RecycledBride.com connect buyers and sellers for free, so they can reduce their wedding budgets and their carbon footprints. More and more brides are joining the wedding resale revolution, discovering how easy it is to save money and be a little greener by buying and selling their gently used wedding items.
Jamie Oliver spoke at TED earlier this month talking about obesity in our society and the lack of proper nutrition and poor diet. It is evident throughout this talk that Jamie is extremely passionate about teaching and informing others on the importance of healthy living.

During a recent trip to an elementary school, Jamie asked the kids to identify vegetables and the scary part? Most of them couldn't!
I found his talk to be very informative and hope it is a wake up call to us all. Do you think he was able to get his message across?
Ricki Lake's Business of Being Born documentary was an eye opener for many and brought an incredible amount of awareness to natural childbirth and a woman's options when it comes to giving birth.

After releasing her book Your Best Birth, Ricki launched the My Best Birth online community where people can share experiences and stories on their pregnancy, natural birth and holistic parenting.

Celebrity Mamas Alyson Denisof, Cindy Crawford & Melissa Joan Hart were all interviewed by Ricki for the My Best Birth Celebrity Webisodes in regards to their birth choices and experiences.

It is wonderful to see celebrities opening up on the benefits of natural birth! Check out My Best Birth to watch the interviews and be sure to join this amazing community.

The urgent call for human milk donations has recently been put on hold.

Safety has become an issue due to the unstable situation in Haiti as the lack of space and electricity pose a risk. In the U.S., donors are rigorously screened beforehand. The milk is then pasteurized, processed and frozen before being distributed on dry ice to sick babies across the country. Like cows milk, breast milk will become rancid if left unrefrigerated.

The unfortunate news from all of this is that 500 ounces of the breast milk donated to the U.S. Navy ship Comfort in Haiti will go unused.

Growing Your Baby reports:

A spokesperson for the American Red Cross says the milk was not requested. Officials are asking women who have inquired about donating breast milk to Haiti after the earthquake to hold off on donations for now.

An urgent call for human milk donations has been made by The Human Milk Banking Association of North America (HMBANA), United States Breastfeeding Committee (USBC), International Lactation Consultant Association/United States Lactation Consultant Association (ILCA/USLCA), and La Leche League International (LLLI).

These organizations have come together asking for donations for premature and sick infants in both Haiti and the United States. Donor milk provides unique protection for fragile preterm infants.

Although these organizations have already responded to requests responding to requests to provide human milk, they are in urgent need of additional donations as the supply is quickly being depleted.

"An International Board Certified Lactation Consultant stationed at the U.S. Navy base in Bethesda, MD is assisting with providing breast pump equipment and supplies to the “Comfort.” Dr. Erika Beard-Irvine, pediatric neonatologist, is on board the “Comfort” to coordinate distribution of the milk to infants in need."

UNICEF, the World Health Organization, the Emergency Nutrition Network, and medical professionals all recommend that breastfeeding and human milk be used for infants in disasters or emergencies. Human milk is life-saving due to its disease prevention properties. It is safe, clean, and does not depend on water which is often unavailable or contaminated in an emergency. Relief workers, health care providers, and other volunteers are urged to provide support for breastfeeding mothers to enable them to continue breastfeeding, and to assist pregnant and postpartum women in initiating and sustaining breastfeeding.

Mother's who are willing and able to donate human milk should contact their regional Mothers’ Milk Bank of HMBANA. Please visit their website for a list of regional milk banks.

Additional information can be provided from the United States Breastfeeding Committee at 202-367-1132, ILC or USLCA at 1-800-452-2478. You can also contact La Leche League at 847-519-7730.

Please remember that even if you are unable to make a donation of milk, financial donations are very much needed!

Yeah! Its about time!

Ecorazzi has reported that Starbucks is now carrying Lucy's cookies - a healthy line of gluten, dairy, egg and nut free cookies that taste delicious.

According to the company’s site:

“Our Quality Assurance Program incorporates three key standards you and your family can count on:

We only buy raw materials from carefully selected producers, thus reducing or eliminating the chance for allergen contact before we use the ingredients.

We use the best available methods to ensure there are no detectable allergens from our testing list: gluten, milk, eggs, peanuts and almonds.

We don’t allow any of these items into our bakery. In fact, peanuts and tree nuts aren’t even allowed in our building!”

We tested Lucy's cookies out recently and loved them! Unlike many allergen free products, these had a wonderful texture and flavor. I'm so happy to see that Starbucks is finally catering to those who are vegan and/or those who have food allergies!

Health Canada has issued an advisory today warning consumers that some children's jewelry products sold in Canada have been found to contain excessively high levels of lead.

CBC reports that two days ago, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission released a similar advisory where toxic cadmium was found in cheap jewelry imported from China. Cadmium, a carcinogen and heavy metal more toxic than lead can cause harmful effects on the development of children as well as children's behaviour, even at low amounts. Walmart and Claires across North America were found to be selling this low-priced jewelry.

In the AP investigation, 103 pieces of low-priced children's jewelry were tested for cadmium. In 12 of the items, the toxic metal made up at least 10 per cent of the metal components and in some cases, as much as 90 per cent.

Health and consumer agencies in Canada and the U.S. are concerned that cadmium, which is a carcinogen, might be increasingly substituted for lead in inexpensive jewelry.

Health Canada Safety Tips

Check your child's jewelry. If you suspect it may contain lead or cadmium, throw it out in your regular household waste.

Do not give young children adult jewelry to wear or play with; it may contain lead or cadmium.

Do not allow children to suck or chew on any jewelry.

If your child has sucked or chewed regularly on jewelry which you think may contain lead or cadmium, ask your doctor to test your child's blood for lead or cadmium.

A child who swallows a jewellery item containing lead or cadmium is at high risk of developing serious health effects. Contact an emergency medical service if you believe your child has swallowed an item containing lead or cadmium.

Check for product recalls by contacting the retailer, manufacturer or Health Canada.

You can find descriptions and photos of four jewelry items that have been identified during the routine testing. Please visit Health Canada for more information.
They are certified organic, GMO-free and incredibly flavorful, spiced to perfection with a deliciuos combination of spices and seasonings.

Each 7.4 ox package contains two of these "steaks" which doesn't seem like a lot but let me tell you, these babies are filling! They also pack a hefty punch in the nutritional department. Each serving contains 29 grams of protein and 260 calories.

Unlike many of the stringy and chewy faux meats on the market Viana's Organic Cowgirl Veggie Steaks are juicy and flavorful. They are wonderful pan-fried, served with some steak sauce along with a side of vegetables or salad and can also be grilled on the barbecue.

Price: $5.99 at Vegan Essentials
