The Quietus interviews Dean Wareham

Online culture mag The Quietus has a lovely in-depth interview with Dean Wareham covering his whole career from Galaxie 500 "Leaving Galaxie 500 was a relief; I felt free. The problem there, beyond ego or personality or all the other petty stuff, was the very structure of the band" through his experiences of labels, both indie and major, and his thoughts on the music industry…

I used to come home from school and sit on my bed and listen to music; now of course teenagers have more modern distractions. Yes they listen to music, but it's only one of many choices. And as you say, they expect the music to be free.

… he also ponders his "achievements"

The achievements are the recordings, or at least the best of them, rather than the songs themselves. 'Tugboat' is a sliver of a song, two chords, a couple of interesting lines perhaps, but the recording has something magical to it. And I could say the same for '23 Minutes in Brussels' by Luna, or an obscure B-side like 'Egg Nog', one of the best things we ever put to tape.

Night People (featuring Sean Eden) make their New York debut

Matthew Buzzell's band Night People will be making it's New York debut on 31st July at The Rock Shop. Matthew was the film-maker responsible for the Luna documentary Tell Me Do You Miss Me and Night People also features Sean Eden on guitar.

Dean on Tuli Kupferberg

Dean has written a short tribute to Tuli Kupferberg on the Dean & Britta blog along with a couple of audio clips.

Tuli Kupferberg, singer with the Fugs, poet, cartoonist and long-time peace activist, passed away last week at age 86. Kramer produced and released an album (Tuli & Friends) with him on Shimmy Disc in 1989, and Kramer liked to say that Tuli was the wisest person he had ever met. My last contact with Mr. Kupferberg was a couple of years ago when I called him about reprinting the lyrics for his amusing anti-war song “Kill For Peace” in Black Postcards.

MP3: Luna cover Kill For Peace

I heard today that Tuli Kupferberg of The Fugs died earlier this week. On 20th March 2003 Bush and Blair invaded Iraq on spurious grounds. Luna covered Tuli Kupferberg's Kill for Peace at their Knitting Factory shows on the 20th and 21st of March 2003 – This recording is from the 11pm show on the 21st.

New Dean & Britta 7″ single

Great Pop Supplement are releasing a Dean & Britta 7" single containing two tracks from 13 Most Beautiful. The single will be released on 26th July and couples the cover of Bob Dylan's I'll Keep it With Mine with It Don't Rain in Beverly Hills. Manchester (UK) indie store Piccadilly Records have it available for pre-order but I suspect it'll arrive in a dealer near you in the not too distant future. As soon as I find some artwork and any more news of other stores stocking it I'll let you know.

Dean Wareham plays Galaxie 500 at Belle & Sebastian curated Bowlie 2

Dean & Britta will be bringing their "Dean Wareham plays Galaxie 500" show to the Bowlie 2 festival in December. The festival takes place between the 10th and 12th of December at the Butlins Holiday Centre in Minehead, Somerset (UK).

The two and three berth rooms have sold out but bigger rooms are still available with prices starting from around £700.

Reviews of the 13 Most Beautiful album

The first couple of reviews of Dean & Britta's forthcoming double CD release of the music recorded for 13 Most Beuatiful have arrived. Adrian Pannett in Delusions of Adequacy has a lovely write up…

the true magic of the 13 Most Beautiful experiment has always been – and remains – within the impervious instrumental set-pieces. Hence, the mesmeric “Ann Buchanan Theme” is still peerlessly touching; the twanging “Silver Factory Theme” and “Herringbone Tweed” still bring in deliciously dark-hued grooves; “Incandescent Innocent” still rumbles with latent dread; and “Richard Rheem Theme” still throbs with enigmatic electro-pulses, which are now enhanced by a warped-techno coda.

Cue taut, hazy, often narcoleptic Velvetsy strains that Wareham has historically carried into newly expressive spheres, heavy on reverb and echo to mirror the spellbound, chemically imbalanced stares and twitches of the subjects

Fourth of July competition: The winner…

And the winner is…

Simon Mealor’s song The Fourth of July Still Plays in My Heart. It was lovely to get a musical entry and one that’s been done so well. The excellently reverential backing track and the sweet narrative in the lyrics is just wonderful. Here’s how Simon described it…

Inspired by teaching in a French high school in the Normandy countryside in 1991 with only three cassettes to listen to for a year — ‘On Fire / This is Our Music’ copied off vinyl onto one C90, The Cowboy Junkies’ ‘Trinity Session’ and Rolling Stones’ ‘More Hot Rocks (Big Hits and Fazed Cookies)’.

Thanks to everyone who entered or thought about entering the A Head Full of Wishes competition. In the end there were four entries – all were wonderful and choosing a winner was really hard and I wanted to make everyone a winner but sadly I don’t have enough stuff to give away! I do have some copies of Luna’s Dear Paulina 7″ so if any runners up want a copy give me a shout…
