Robert Watine, M.D., of Port Charlotte, Florida, gave the presentation on Dec. 10, sharing his personal experience in incorporating the Isagenix system as an adjunct therapy to standard medical practice in his own patients. The products, he explained, are a combination of high-protein, nutrient-dense meal replacement shakes on Shake Days, the use of an herbal beverage along with liquid fasting on Cleanse Days, and supplementation with adaptogens.

He presented pre- and post-treatment clinical outcome measures after one and three months of the dietary intervention in several of his patients. Each showed marked improvements after following the system for at least three months—body weight, plasma lipids, liver function, renal profiles, and markers of blood sugar management. No side effects were reported.

Each of the patients reported improved quality of life defined by more energy, better sleep, improved concentration, and/or better athletic performance.

“This is of real significance,” Dr. Watine said. “This is quality of life improvement doing nothing other than changing a way you eat. Eating more correctly, giving the body what it needs.”

Fat Loss and Muscle Anabolism

Dr. Watine said the patients using the system lost body fat while maintaining or, when combined with resistance exercise, gaining lean body mass. The system works, he said, by incorporating nutrition that promotes muscle anabolism and cellular cleansing, and facilitating fat loss through cellular pathways that increase the number of mitochondria in cells. Optimizing muscle size (sarcomere volumization) the Isagenix way, Dr. Watine says, is the “trick to fat burning.”

He told attendees he started using the products in his practice because patients would often come to him saying, “I’ve tried everything, I eat like a bird, I can’t get rid of the body fat.”

Obesity can complicate most chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and asthma. The integration of Isagenix products into mainstream medical practice for reducing obesity can improve clinical outcomes.

The products had now improved the quality of life in hundreds of his patients. “It’s quite impressive,” Dr. Watine said.

Dr. Watine practices community based general internal medicine in the office at Southwest Florida Medical Center for Age Management, Wellness and Rejuvenation in Port Charlotte, Florida. He also is on staff at Charlotte Regional Medical Center, Peace River Regional Medical Center, and Fawcett Memorial Hospital.
He graduated from University of Miami School of Medicine in 1985, completing his internship and residency at Mount Sinai Medical Center from 1985 and 1988. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine.

The World Congress of Anti-Aging Medicine and Aesthetic Medicine is a conference organized by the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine (A4M). A4M is comprised of 22,000 or more members from 105 nations worldwide. The organization promotes advancement and research into methods to optimize the human aging process.
There is just no question because natural production of this vital heart-energizing nutrient peaks in a person’s early 20s and then biosynthesis lessens with age.

By age 60, biosynthesis has decreased by half (see graph below showing typical plasma levels of coQ10 with age) and the need for supplementation becomes more critical if a person is taking heart medications like statins that inhibit coQ10 production further.

With almost a quarter of the 120 million people of the Baby Boomer generation in the United States taking statin drugs, many suffer from muscle fatigue, a sign of severely depleted coQ10 levels and they don’t know it.
“CoQ10 supplementation would definitely help these individuals and it is indeed a big market,” says William Judy, Ph.D., who has been studying the nutrient for nearly 40 years and its several pathways and benefits in the body.

Not only is supplementation with coQ10 critical for the health of your heart, Dr. Judy says, but also other organs including the brain, kidneys and liver. Each need high amounts of coQ10 to function smoothly.

So, the question becomes what kind of coQ10 supplement to take? There are several to choose from on the market. But when it comes to efficacy, the biggest problem is finding a product that is efficiently absorbed into the body.

Eight Times More Absorption

Solving the problem of poor absorption of fat-soluble coQ10 is one of Dr. Judy’s greatest achievements with his development of technology to dissolve coQ10 in conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) and then using flaxseed oil as a stabilizer to prevent recrystallization.

“The monoglyceride in the product is the lipid-transport molecule that carries coQ10 across the intestinal absorption cells,” Dr. Judy says.

This is the technology found in Isagenix Ageless Actives, which boasts 100 milligrams of coQ10 per 2 softgels. In a comparison trial, adult subjects absorbed eight times more of the patent-pending coQ10 than dry powder where only 1 percent was absorbed.

The form of coQ10 used in Ageless Actives is ubidecarenone, or ubiquinone, a more stable form of the molecule. Other forms of coQ10 such as ubiquinol are highy unstable and are generally converted to ubiquinone in the stomach before absorption.

The dosage of coQ10 found in Ageless Actives, combined with Dr. Judy’s patent-pending absorption technology, offers potent protection against oxidative stress that could harm the integrity of cardiac tissue.
The supplement helps restore coQ10 to youthful levels and, within only a few weeks of taking Ageless Actives, coQ10 is replenished in all cells of the heart and the body leading to increased energy levels and better overall health.
Perfluoroalkyls, which are chemicals used to keep grease from leaking through fast food wrappers, are being ingested by people through their food and showing up as contaminants in blood.
They are used in surface protection treatments and coatings for packages.

The specific chemicals studied were polyfluoroalkyl phosphate esters (PAPs), which are the breakdown products of the perfluorinated carboxylic acids used in coating the food wrappers.

Common Dreams reports:

"The researchers used the PAP concentrations previously observed in human blood together with the PAP and PFCA concentrations observed in the rats to calculate human exposure to the chemical perflurooctanoic acid, PFOA."

You know that eating fast food is not good for you, but now you have a new reason to avoid it as it turns out that even the wrapper used to store the food until you eat it is toxic.

You may not realize it, but you and your family are continually exposed to a hazardous class of chemicals called perfluoroalkyls, which include perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS).

Common, everyday sources of exposure include:

             Flame retardants

According to recent survey results, these chemicals can be detected in nearly all people in the US, including children!

And it's not just PFOA and PFOS that show up. The CDC's Fourth National Report on Human Exposure to Environmental Chemicals, 2009 (which is considered the most comprehensive assessment to date of the exposure of the U.S. population to chemicals in our environment), detected a total of 12 different types of perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) in Americans tested.

I've written many articles about one of the most common sources of these hazardous chemicals, namely non-stick cookware. But the study above brings up yet another pervasive source – fast food wrappers!

Regulators' Assumptions Proven All Wrong – Again!

Three years ago, environmental chemists Scott Mabury and Jessica D'eon established that food wrappers are indeed a source of perfluorinated chemicals, specifically polyfluoroalkyl phosphate esters, known as PAPs.

PAPs are byproducts of perfluorinated carboxylic acids (PFCAs, which include PFOA), which are commonly used to coat different types of food wrappers.
In this study, the pair shows that these chemicals can, and do, transfer from the wrappers into the food, and that food wrappers are in fact a source of human exposure to PFCAs, including PFOA.

According to Madbury, our regulators made three assumptions about these chemicals, all of which have now been proven wrong:

The chemicals will not migrate from the paper into the food

The chemicals will not become available to your body

Your body will not process these chemicals

The Many Health Dangers of PFCs

These chemicals are part of an expanding group of chemicals commonly referred to as "gender-bending" chemicals, because they can disrupt your endocrine system and affect your sex hormones.

But researchers have also linked them to a range of other health dangers.
In animal studies, PFOA has been associated with:

"Significant increases in treatment related deaths" in rat offspring at doses that did not affect the mothers

Serious changes in the weight of various organs, including the brain, prostate, liver, thymus, and kidneys

The deaths of a significant number of rat pups of mothers that had been exposed to PFOA

Damage to the pituitary at all doses in female rat offspring (The pituitary secretes hormones that regulate growth, reproduction, and many metabolic processes. Change in pituitary size is associated with toxicity)

Tumor development after prolonged exposure

Other studies have linked various PFC's to:

Infertility -- A study published in the journal Human Reproduction last year found that both PFOA and PFOS (perfluorooctane sulfonate), dramatically increased the odds of infertility.

PFOS increased the risk of infertility anywhere from 70 to 134 percent, while PFOA was linked to a 60 to 154 percent increase in the chance of infertility.

Thyroid disease -- A study published in May of this year in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives found that PFOA can damage your thyroid function. Individuals with the highest PFOA concentrations were more than twice as likely to report current thyroid disease, compared to those with the lowest PFOA concentrations.

Your thyroid contains thyroglobulin protein, which binds to iodine to form hormones, which in turn influence essentially every organ, tissue and cell in your body. Thyroid hormones are also required for growth and development in children. Thyroid disease, if left untreated, can lead to heart disease, infertility, muscle weakness, and osteoporosis.

Cancer -- PFOA has been associated with tumors in at least four different organs in animal tests (liver, pancreas, testicles and mammary glands in rats), and has been associated with increases in prostate cancer in PFOA plant workers.

The EPA has ruled PFCs as "likely carcinogens," and has stated that PFOA "poses developmental and reproductive risks to humans."

Immune system problems -- Several studies by scientists in Sweden indicate that PFC's have an adverse effect on your immune system. As described in a report on PFC's by the Environmental Working Group (EWG), PFOA was found to decrease all immune cell subpopulations studied, in the thymus and spleen, and caused immunosupression.

Increased LDL cholesterol levels – A recent study in the Archives of Pediatric & Adolescent Medicine implicates both PFOA and PFOS. Children and teens with higher PFOA levels had higher levels of total cholesterol and LDL or "bad" cholesterol, while PFOS was associated with increased total cholesterol, including both LDL cholesterol and HDL or "good" cholesterol.

For more information on the studies linking PFC's with various health problems, please review the Environmental Working Groups extensive report on this topic.

What Can You Do to Protect Your Health?

I strongly recommend avoiding any product you know contain these toxic compounds, particularly non-stick cookware, but also foods sold in grease-proof food packaging, such as fast food.

Clearly, if you're eating fast food, PFC's from the wrapper may be the least of your problems, but I think it's still important to realize that not only are you not getting proper nutrition from the food itself, the wrappers may also add to your toxic burden.

Most important of all, however, is ditching your non-stick cookware, because they're a MAJOR source of PFC's, particularly PFOA. The moment you heat them, they start to liberate fluoride vapors that are so toxic they will kill small birds!

Every time you cook with them, you inhale these chemicals, and the food in the pan absorbs them too, turning every home-cooked meal toxic...

As for identifying other products to avoid, the Environmental Working Group has done an extensive search for common products containing PFC's. You can look through their listings here.

Keep in mind that avoiding these products is especially crucial for pregnant women or couples who want to have children, since PFC's can have a serious impact on your fertility, and on your baby's delicate hormonal system.
Too Much Caffeine May Not Be Good For You

Via 'Doc Wellness', Dr David Orman, 12/28/2010

If starting your day with a cup or coffee or two, having another while you\’re on the road, another after arriving at work, and another to get through the afternoon slump, and perhaps a can of pop or a candy bar after work followed by an ice tea and ice cream after dinner, you may have a serious caffeine addiction.

Many people often feel irritable as the next day\’s events are closing in on them at bed time and are restless about the next day\’s problems race through their mind. It\’s been like this for years for many of us, with an estimated 80 percent of adult Americans being regular coffee drinkers and each adult coffee drinker averaging 3.3 cups of coffee per day, without taking into account other sources of caffeine.

Caffeine can be found in tea, chocolate, soft drinks, and medicines, but is most often consumed in coffee. Coffee is somewhat popular because of the stimulating effect of its caffeine constituent, but it can contribute to irritability, depression, diarrhea, insomnia, and other disorders. The number one legal mind-altering drug in the world, caffeine is odorless, slightly bitter and can be found in coffee, tea, kola nuts, ilex plants, mate, and cocoa. You may know and accept that you have a caffeine habit, but many people are convinced that they need a pick-me-up from time to time in order to get through the day. What is important is that caffeine is not actually giving you the burst of energy, but instead negative moods and emotions.

The coffee tree, which is a small evergreen, has smooth leaves and clusters of fragrant white flowers that mature into red fruits that are about half of an inch long. The fruit contains two seeds usually, which become raw coffee beans when dried. After roasting, coffee contains more than 700 volatile substances including acids, alcohols, and even residues of cancer-causing pesticides. In all fairness, caffeine does act as a mild stimulant to the nervous system when used in moderation, which results in a feeling of well-being and alertness. It increases the heart rate, urination, and stimulates the secretion of stomach acid.

Although a little caffeine may wake us up and give us a sense of energy, too much caffeine actually hurts our moods and overall well being. Two cups of caffeine per day seems to have a positive effect, but research shows that even one cup a day is enough to cause dependence. Caffeine may temporarily improve your mood and give a sense of vitality, it wears off and your mood and energy levels crash to levels even lower than before. Additionally, our bodies adjust, causing us to need more caffeine to give us the same desired effect. Caffeine does not provide any energy or increase our alertness. Instead, it stimulates our bodies.

Excessive intake of coffee can lead to restlessness, insomnia, and heart irregularities. Those people who drink a lot of coffee often complain of jittery nerves, chronic anxiety, frequent bouts of diarrhea or loose stools, and restless nights. Coffee can also cause stomach and intestinal problems, as well as coronary diseases. An occasional cup of coffee is one thing, but depending on a cup to keep you awake is something entirely different.

Harsh symptoms of withdrawal such as headache, fatigue, and depression are common among regular caffeine users. Caffeine also causes the body to expel vital nutrients like b vitamins from the body that we need to function. If you consume more than two cups of coffee each day then a multi-vitamin should be taken once daily to help replenish was is lost by the diuretic effects of caffeine in the body.

The Truth About Alkaline Water
[Via Dr. Mercola (www.mercola.com]

Clean, pure water is a cornerstone of good health. Your body is mostly water, so the ongoing intake of water is essential to your every function.

It’s common knowledge that most water sources are now polluted, but there is tremendous confusion about what kind of drinking water is the most health promoting, and what kind of home water treatment produces the best drinking water.

Today, too many people are choosing soda instead of pure water as their primary beverage and the health of an entire culture is at risk.

The number one source of calories in the U.S. comes from high fructose corn syrup primarily in the form of soda. Americans drink an average of one gallon of soda each week, and this excessive fructose consumption is a driving force behind obesity and chronic degenerative disease in this country.

The most practical and economical strategy to combat obesity and chronic disease is to replace all sodas and other sweet beverages with pure water.

The trouble is, most public water supplies are loaded with hazardous contaminants, such as disinfection byproducts, fluoride, and pharmaceutical drugs, to name just a few.

Nevertheless, you DO need to make water your beverage of choice if you want to be healthy - but it should be purified water.

But beyond water filtration, there’s also the issue of pH - alkaline versus acidic water. There are quite a few astonishing health claims being made about alkaline water, but are they true?
Most of them are not.

The theory behind alkaline water is, in a nutshell, that alkaline (ionized) water is a powerful antioxidant with surplus electrons that can “mop up” the dangerous free radicals you have coursing through your veins. Marketers claim alkaline water can correct excess acidity in your tissues, which can then prevent or reverse cancer, arthritis, and other degenerative diseases.[i]

Here is a link to my interview with Houston Tomasz on this topic. He’s a ten-year veteran in the water filtration industry and this article expands on some of the items that we discuss in our interview.

The segment is part of a much longer interview that we will air in future issues. Additionally, I have interviewed two other experts on this topic and they both agree that ionizers that produce alkaline water are not your best choice.

“Snake Oil on Tap”

When I posted a comment on my Facebook page, announcing I was interviewing Houston, I asked for questions and the most popular question by far was whether or not to drink alkaline water.

Many alkaline water enthusiasts are convinced its powers are unparalleled and will vehemently defend it. I am also certain that many will post vigorous objections to my position, and that is their choice. It is also my choice and responsibility to provide information on a system that many people are relying on to provide health benefits that I feel are unjustified.

It is my impression that the scientific justification for these water systems is absent and these consumers have merely fallen under the spell of a skilled marketer who selectively misused pseudoscientific information, and twisted it around to scare them into buying their product.

There are a plethora of testimonials and so-called scientific studies on the Internet claiming alkaline water will cure your every ill. Many consumers, struggling to make sense of the scientific jargon, eventually throw up their hands in frustration.
In truth, there are very, very few legitimate scientific studies about the effects of alkaline water on human health.

The reality is, most of the circulating information is distributed by clever marketers, with very little scientific validity to back up their claims.

Complicating matters is the fact that most water ionizers and alkalizers are being marketed by multi-level marketing (MLM) companies with less than stellar ethics. They sell you a very expensive machine, for which you get a good discount if you sign up as a rep, and once you’re part of the MLM, you can’t very well change your mind about its benefits (especially if you’re going to sell the units) - even if you realize that the alkaline water is no longer “working” for you.

I have been personally approached many times and encouraged to sell these systems and there would have been large revenue streams had I chosen to do so, but I would never promote anything that I would never use personally, and I can assure you that I would never use alkaline water as a regular source of water.

Please understand I have no ax to grind here, and I am not selling any competing products. The sole purpose of this report is as a public health message to warn people that alkaline water is not all it is hyped up to be.

I have no doubts that many people do notice improvements in their health when they initially start drinking alkaline water, but I believe there are other reasons for this, and I am convinced that this is not a healthful strategy in the long run, so it is my strong recommendation to avoid alkaline water ionizers.

Some people experience an initial “high” when they start drinking alkaline water. This can easily be attributed to detoxification, and the fact that they are likely just becoming better hydrated.

Detoxification is about the only benefit of this type of water, and this benefit is limited to very SHORT TERM USE (no more than a week or two).

I will elaborate on what is known about alkaline water, but first you’ll need a basic understanding of the properties of water and a few definitions.

Types of Water Available to You

As I will review in a future interview with Houston, there are many reasons why you want to avoid drinking tap water, or as Daniel Vitalis, a raw water enthusiast, refers to it: “tap liquid.” He believes calling what flows from your unfiltered tap “water” is being overly generous, and I would have to agree.

In terms of types of water, here are some basic definitions to keep in mind:

Purified water: Water that is physically processed to remove impurities (e.g., distillation, deionization, reverse osmosis, carbon filtration, etc.)

Distilled water: Water that is boiled and evaporated away from its dissolved minerals, and then the vapor is condensed.

Bottled Water. This water is typically from a spring or has gone through reverse osmosis before it is bottled. However, some brands are simply bottled tap water that may or may not have gone through any additional filtering.

Ionized water or alkaline water: Water that has been separated into alkaline and acid fractions using electrolysis, which takes advantage of the naturally occurring electric charges found in the magnesium and calcium ions; in the drinking water industry, ionized water refers to alkaline water, which has a pH greater than 7.

Deionized or demineralized water: Water in which the mineral ions (salts such as sodium, calcium, iron, copper, chloride and bromide) have been removed by exposing it to electrically charged resins that attract and bind to the salts.

Hard and soft water: Hard water is any water containing an appreciable quantity of dissolved minerals; soft water is treated water in which the only cation (positively charged ion) is sodium.

Understanding PH

The concept of the acidity or alkalinity of your body - or of water - is based on the pH scale. So it’s necessary to have a basic understanding of what pH is.

PH is simply a measure of the concentration of hydrogen ions. In fact, the acronym “pH” is short for “potential of hydrogen.” The higher a liquid’s pH, the fewer free hydrogen ions it has; the lower its pH, the more free hydrogen ions it has. One pH unit reflects a tenfold change in ion concentration - for example, there are ten times as many hydrogen ions available at a pH of 7 than at a pH of 8 [ii].

The pH scale goes from 0 to 14, and a pH of 7 is neutral.

Anything with a pH below 7 is considered acidic, with battery acid being the most extreme example, around 1. Anything with a pH above 7 is alkaline (or basic), with lye at the top of the scale, around 13. [iii]

Natural water on our planet ranges in pH from 6.5 to 9.0, depending on surrounding soil and vegetation, seasonal variations and weather, and even time of day responses to sunlight. Human activities further influence the pH of our water, from the barrage of toxic industrial pollutants.

According to an educational website called “Water on the Web”2:

“Pollutants in water can cause it to have higher algal and plant growth, as a result of increased temperature or excess nutrients, causing pH levels to rise. Although these small changes in pH are not likely to have a direct impact on aquatic life, they greatly influence the availability and solubility of all chemical forms in the lake and may aggravate nutrient problems.
For example, a change in pH may increase the solubility of phosphorus, making it more available for plant growth and resulting in a greater long-term demand for dissolved oxygen.”
Most aquatic animals and plants have adapted to life in water with a very specific pH, and will die from even slight changes. A pH below 4 or above 10 will kill most fish, and very few animals can tolerate waters with a pH below 3 or above 11 [iv].

With living systems being so sensitive to changes in pH, it should comes as no surprise that YOU, as another living organism on this planet, would be sensitive to your water’s pH as well.

Guidelines for the pH of Your Drinking Water

So, what are the recommendations for optimal drinking water pH?

The WHO has published a nearly-600 page document called “Guidelines for Drinking-water Quality.” [v]

In this voluminous tome, you would expect to find everything you’d ever want to know about your drinking water, right?

Well, everything EXCEPT a pH recommendation - there are no health-based guidelines for pH!

They state that pH usually has “no direct impact on consumers,” yet they also write pH is one of the “most important operational water quality parameters.”

They do recommend your water pH be in the range of 6.5 to 8.0 so as not to corrode your pipes - and they’re NOT talking about your body’s plumbing:

“Alkalinity and calcium management also contribute to the stability of water and control its aggressiveness to pipe and appliance. Failure to minimize corrosion can result in the contamination of drinking water and in adverse effects on its taste and appearance. Failure to minimize corrosion can result in the contamination of drinking water and in adverse effects on its taste and appearance.”
It appears that the WHO is more concerned about the pipes in your house than the pipes in your body.

Most likely the optimal pH of the water you were designed to drink is somewhere between 6.5 and 7.5.

Alkalinity Research I: Flora and Fauna

Although the research is clear that alkaline water has detrimental effects on plants and animals, there are not many studies with humans.

A review of the literature turns up a variety of anecdotal evidence about the importance of ph to various living organisms, however, and as you might expect, optimal pH varies, depending on the organism.

The scientific literature indicates pH is important for nutrition and vitality. For example:

Michigan State University studied greenhouse growth media (including the pH of that media), finding it is extremely important for the media pH to be properly adjusted prior to planting. Too high of a pH (greater than 6.5) increases the chances of micronutrient deficiencies. Too low of a pH (less than 5.3) results in calcium and/or magnesium and/or manganese toxicity. [vi]

Ohio State University Extension Service reports that alkaline water affects a plant’s ability to obtain nutrients from the soil and can alter the soil’s pH over time.[vii]

An ecological study in the Netherlands found that an influx of alkaline water led to the demise of a native plant called Stratiotes aloides L. [viii]

Fish chronically exposed to alkaline soft water exhibit signs of stress (sometimes fatal), while fish in alkaline hard water experienced no such adverse effects, according to a study at the University of British Columbia. [ix]

If you are a gardener, you can view a helpful illustration of the environmental effects of pH in your own garden. If your pH is low, your hydrangea produces pink flowers, but if your pH is high, you’ll get blue flowers.

But what about us bipeds?

Alkalinity Research II: Humans

There has been a great deal of debate about battling cancer by making your body alkaline. This has become a focus of interest as cancer rates have skyrocketed (along with many other chronic, debilitating diseases), while our bodies have become more acidic from our processed-food diets.

The scientific research about the benefits of alkalinity is by no means conclusive.
PH appears to have a major influence on cell mitochondria:

Normal cells die under extremely alkaline conditions. A study published in the Journal of Biological Chemistry found that alkalosis (rising cellular pH) causes alkaline-induced cell death as a result of altering mitochondrial function. [x]

Another study out of Cornell University states that antioxidants have not proven to be effective against many neurodegenerative diseases, and they state it may be a result of how the mitochondria operate within the cell in certain pH conditions.[xi]

There are some scientific studies that really argue against alkalinity, at least with respect to preventing or treating cancer.

Consider the research by Robert Gilles, who has studied tumor formation and acidity.[xii]

According to Gilles, tumors, by their very nature, make themselves acidic - even in an alkaline cellular structure. In other words, they make their own acidity.

Scientists who are in the process of developing prototypes for potential new anticancer agents that selectively kill tumor cells by interfering with the regulation of intracellular pH, have found that alkaline treatments do NOT have the desired effect - but strongly acidic treatments do.[xiii]

Talk about fighting fire with fire - they are fighting acid-loving cancer cells with acid!
LESS alkalinity inside a cancer cell seems to be what you want, not more.

So, all of those ionizer salesmen promising alkaline water will lower your cancer risk are completely clueless when it comes to what the scientific research actually shows.

Even more interesting is a 2005 study by the National Cancer Institute, which revisits the use of vitamin C (ascorbic acid) to treat cancer. They found that, in pharmacologic doses administered intravenously, ascorbic acid successfully killed cancer cells without harming normal cells.[xiv] This is yet another example of cancer cells being vulnerable to acidity, as opposed to alkalinity.

It’s clear that the relationship between alkalinity and cancer has been grossly oversimplified by those jumping to premature conclusions - and of course by those trying to profit off your fear.

The bottom line is that alkaline water isn’t cancer’s magic bullet.

Balance is Key

As is true with many things, in the end it’s a matter of balance.

Water that is too acidic or too alkaline can be detrimental to human health and lead to nutritional disequilibrium. This was demonstrated in a Swedish well water study [xv], which found both pH extremes to be problematic.

Your body simply was not designed to drink highly alkaline water all the time.

So I believe it’s best to be VERY careful when it comes to something as foundational as the water you drink on a daily basis. If you get it wrong, you could really cause yourself some major damage.

It makes sense that you are designed to drink water that occurs naturally, which excludes alkaline water with pH levels of 8 and above.

And if you drink alkaline water all the time, you’re going to raise the alkalinity of your stomach, which will buffer your stomach’s acidity and impair your ability to digest food as low stomach acid is one of the most common causes of ulcers. This can open the door for parasites in your small intestine, and your protein digestion may suffer. It also means you’ll get less minerals and nutrients over time - in fact, some of these health effects can already be seen in hard-core alkaline water drinkers.

Alkalinity is also potentially a problem because it is antibacterial, so it could potentially disrupt the balance of your body’s beneficial bacteria.[xvi]

Living Water

What you want is pure water - water that is clean, balanced, and healthful, neither too alkaline nor too acidic. Ideally, the pH of your water should be close to 7, which is neutral.

Somewhere between 6 to 8 is likely fine.

And some of the most healthful waters in the world - that emerging from mountain springs - are actually acidic in the range of 6.5. and would absolutely be my preference if it were readily available.

If this is something that interests you there is a web site, FindaSpring.com where you can find springs in your local area.

That is “living water,” which is living in the same way that raw food is “living food.”
One reason I am such an advocate for eating plenty of fresh, organic raw food is for its biophotons. Biophotons are the smallest units of light, which are stored in and used by all biological organisms - including you. Vital energy finds its way into your cells from the biodynamic foods you eat.

In the same way that raw foods are alive with biophoton energy, natural water is “alive” in a similar way.

If you really want to alkalinize your body it would seem wise to encourage it with the highest quality water possible which is obtained from vegetable juice. Green vegetable juices will help your body normalize your body’s pH naturally.

If this is new to you and you are interested in more information you can review my juicing manual for free.

I cannot think of “living water” without thinking of the visionary work of Dr. Masaru Emoto, the Japanese researcher who experimented with the crystal forms of water. What he discovered is that different forms of energy influence water’s ability to organize into beautiful crystal forms.[xvii]

He demonstrated that water crystallization depends on the natural health of the water. He found that water from natural springs, healing water sources, etc., formed beautiful and complex crystalline geometries - like snowflakes. Water that had been distilled or polluted lost its inner order, and its ability to crystallize was profoundly disturbed.

You wouldn’t want to eat dead food... so why would you want to drink dead water?

Water Ionizers are NOT Filters!

It is really important to understand that the ionization process in no way, shape, or form purifies your water. Many of them have additional carbon-based filtration systems added, as reverse osmosis or distilled water will not allow the ionizer to produce alkaline water.

If for whatever reason the information I am presenting here does not convince you to avoid using ionizers, then you will need to carefully analyze the water filter that is being used.

This article only addresses ionizers and alkaline water. In the near future I will post a comprehensive review of water filters as it is complex issue that is beyond the scope of this article.

Is Your Water Filter Certified?

In order to ensure your water is pure, you should use a high quality water filter in your home and workplace. You can narrow down the choices by making sure the product you choose is certified by a reputable independent water certification agency.

Two of the best, most stringent certifications are NSF and UL, NSF works with ANSI to write the standards that water filters are tested against. If a water purifier is certified by NSF or UL, the product claims have been verified, the system is structurally sound, and the literature and labeling is not misleading. Look for the NSF seal or the UL water mark.

Two other less rigorous certifications are Pace Analytical, and The Water Quality Association (WQA).

There is no national regulation of water products - states have their own regulations, which vary greatly state by state.

The EPA has published a chart listing their limits for every type of water contaminant, including microorganisms, disinfectants and disinfectant byproducts, organic and inorganic chemicals, and radionuclides, viewable here.

Please beware that some companies may mislead you by listing their UL certification, but this certification is usually only good for the electrical components, and has no bearing on water quality whatsoever. The UL water mark that signifies that a water treatment device’s performance has been certified looks like:

Optimizing Your Body’s PH: Back to Basics

The typical American diet is loaded with sugar and processed foods, which throws off your body’s ability to optimize your pH. Although your body has mechanisms to buffer your pH, many of you are likely living in a state of low-grade acidosis from eating too many low-quality processed, devitalized food..

Our ancestors had no problems with pH because they ate a pre-agricultural hunter-gatherer diet, rich in plant foods and high quality meats, and devoid of grains.

You can optimize your body’s pH by eating like your ancestor’s did - a diet rich in raw, organic, whole foods - and this will help your body achieve homeostasis.

Remember, there is no one-size-fits-all nutrition plan that works for everyone, which is why Nutritional Typing is so helpful. Determining your nutritional type will help you narrow down the foods that are best for YOUR body’s individual chemistry.

A diet that makes one person “acidic” may make another person “alkaline,” so there is no one single universal food list for perfect pH.

For example, protein types can “over-alkalize” their systems by consuming too many dark green vegetables, which can worsen rather than improve their health, in spite of the many beneficial phytonutrients in leafy greens. (I am very familiar with this mistake as it’s one I made prior to understanding nutritional typing!)

I want you to be aware of just how important it is to understand your body at a deeper level.

Your body is a complex, multi-faceted biochemical system that is unlikely to respond well to shot-in-the-dark treatments, like alkaline water.

According to Life Extension Foundation’s research, 1 in 3 Americans now suffer from the “quiet” condition known as NAFLD – NonAlcoholic Fatty Liver Disease. This disease may go undetected for many years and can progress to liver inflammation and scarring (also known as cirrhosis) or even full blown liver failure.

Its major cause is poor diet that leads to the well known “big 3″ — metabolic syndrome, obesity and diabetes. Some hypothesize that genetics can play a role but this is most likely poor diet and lifestyles choices “disguised.” Standard medicine does not have any effective treatments to any degree for this issue.

Natural medicine on the other hand, does. There is a multi-phase focus on NAFLD:

* Reducing oxidative stress
* Reducing insulin resistance
* Reducing fat accumulation and abnormal lipid profiles

In terms of treatment, Vitamin E, Omega 3 fatty acids and dietary and exercise changes are the most common choices. The goal is to improve liver chemistry, ameliorate liver cell damage and improve the blood flow to the liver itself.

US doctors say chemicals can cause cancer

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Dr Linda Giudice has treated thousands of patients over the years with a range of troubling reproductive disorders, and this week, she joined health experts and a young mother in fingering chemicals as the probable cause.

"I have treated thousands of patients... including young men with very abnormal sperm counts or a history of testicular cancer, women as young as 17 and already in the menopause, little girls with the onset of puberty at six or eight," Giudice told a news conference.

"There is increasing evidence that environmental contaminants may be playing a role in these disorders," said Giudice, who chairs the department of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive sciences at the University of California, San Francisco.

Molly Gray, a young mother who was found to have high levels of toxic chemicals in her blood during her pregnancy, suspects chemicals were the culprit.

She recalled how, after several miscarriages, she radically changed her lifestyle and ate only organically grown food, avoided fish high in mercury, shunned plastic food storage containers, and switched to "green" cleaning products.

But in spite of the changes, tests on Gray during her pregnancy showed she had high levels of 13 toxic chemicals in her blood.

"These chemicals have become ubiquitous in the environment and, as clean as I tried to be, it was not enough to protect my baby boy," she said.

"I was disheartened. Because they are Mediterranean natives, artichokes produced in the US are grown in warm climates such as southern California.

They are not just tasty; they have many health benefits as well. Here are some of them.

1. Liver Tonic

Artichokes contain cynarin, a phytochemical (or plant chemical) that improves liver function. It increases the production of bile. Artichokes help cleanse the liver of toxins and impurities, thus improving overall liver and body function. The herb milk thistle, which is well known as a liver tonic, and artichokes - also a thistle - are closely related.

2. Digestion

Dyspepsia and irritable bowel syndrome have both been shown to benefit from artichoke consumption. Dyspepsia is generally considered a result of low bile function, and as noted above, artichokes help increase bile production. Artichokes' fiber can help digestive problems, too.

3. Cardiovascular

Artichokes are good for the blood. Not only do they contain iron, but they also enhance the speed at which blood clots.

The cynarin in artichokes also helps lower levels of blood cholesterol. This may be attributable to their liver-cleansing effect, since the liver is responsible for the processing of cholesterol. Artichokes are also a good source of fiber, and a diet rich in fiber is associated with cardiovascular health.

4. Vitamins and Minerals

Artichokes contain a lot of vitamin C, magnesium, calcium, potassium, and folate.

5. Diabetes

Artichokes help regulate blood sugar levels. The reason is the presence of a carbohydrate, which takes the form of insulin. It acts differently than other carbohydrates (sugars), making it low in calories and an excellent food for diabetics.

6. Antioxidants

While berries and red wine get a lot of attention as containing antioxidants, globe artichokes were actually shown to contain more antioxidants than these foods in one study. Antioxidants are implicated in cancer prevention.

7. Urinary Health

Artichokes' high potassium content helps prevent kidney stones. Artichokes are also a mild diuretic, and have been implicated in aiding bladder problems.

When choosing artichokes to consume, look for compact, dark green leaves. The artichoke should feel heavy for its size. Steam artichokes whole, after cutting off the stem and removing any damaged outer leaves. Some people slice off the top third or so of the artichoke, removing some of the pointy leaf tips.

When consuming artichokes, pluck off individual steamed leaves and dip them in lemon butter, then scrape the flesh off the base of the leaf with your teeth. Once the leaves are eaten, remove the stiff hairs from the heart and eat it, too. Chop the discarded leaves and brew them into a healing tea.

The Case for Delaying Aging

via Isagenix Health
by Isagenix Nutritional Sciences on 10/11/10

Since the beginning of the 20th century, human life expectancy has steadily increased by more than 30 years, and is expected—if we can sustain current trends—to increase even more in the 21st century.

Now more than ever before, biogerontologists are advising that life expectancy is not fixed but “plastic,” and predicting that nutritional and medical advances could help keep people healthy and alive well past their 100th birthdays.

Recently, however, a few scientists have called for stepping up medical research and focusing more on late-life aging-intervention therapy, which they say is needed to avert what they have predicted will become a “global aging crisis.”

They point out that the crisis will be a result of the “baby boomer generation” – those born during the Post-World War II baby boom – in the developed world reaching retirement age. The drastic rise in the amounts of elderly will lead to more suffering from major age-related, chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer’s and cancer.

In a commentary from the July issue of Science Translational Medicine

, the biogerontologists write, ”the social and medical costs of the biological aging process are high and will rise rapidly in coming decades, creating an enormous challenge to societies worldwide.”

Aging has a “causal—rather than a casual—relationship” with age-related, chronic diseases, write the scientists. Therapies should be directed at slowing or reversing aging damage, which is defined as a “progressive lifelong accumulation of deleterious changes in the structure of the body at the molecular, cellular, and tissue levels.”

Late-life Aging Intervention Roadmap
Currently only 0.1 percent (about $10 million) of the National Institutes of Health’s $28 billion budget has been allocated for biological aging research, of which only a few hundred thousand is directed toward research into late-life aging intervention.

More funding and an intense agenda in the roadmap for aging research is needed, write the scientists, who present a broad plan for averting the aging crisis that encompasses three late-life, aging intervention strategies:

Reduce exposure to environmental toxins

and ameliorate other risk factors through improved public health.

Slow down
damage to metabolic pathways, which contributes to age-related changes.

Develop a more broadly conceived regenerative medicine to embrace the repair, removal, or replacement of existing damage or its decoupling from its pathological sequelae [intervening in progression of disease].

“To realize any chance of success,” according to the scientists, “the drive to tackle biological aging head-on must begin now.”

Although research into late-life aging-intervention therapies is still in its infancy, there are several lifestyle strategies that can be adopted currently for slowing aging, such as avoiding smoking, exercising regularly, and eating a nutritious diet.
You’ve probably heard of cleansing before, but not all cleanses are created equal.

Cleansing is the act of helping your body to eliminate impurities and has been practiced for centuries around the world. People use a variety of teas, dietetics, and ingredients, such as cayenne pepper and lemonade, to cleanse. Most cleanses are designed to target just one part of the body such as the liver or the colon. However, cleansing is only one part of the equation.

This is where Isagenix is different. It is more than a cleanse.

If you drain the oil out of your car, but don’t fill it back up, it’s likely not going to run too well. The same goes for your body. If you cleanse but don’t refuel your body properly, you can be left feeling tired and sluggish and possibly worse off than you did before.

Nutritional Cleansing, the Isagenix way, is a safe and effective way to help your body and its systems naturally remove impurities and perform more efficiently. At the same time, you are filling your body with the nutrients it needs to keep up with your busy lifestyle.

Isagenix is the World Leader in Nutritional Cleansing™ because no one else comes close to providing a more natural, effective and safe cleanse that is part of a proven system for greater health and weight management. Plus, the Isagenix Cleanse for Life™ mineral drink is so powerful, you can drink some every day to maintain optimal health and make your cleansing more effective. Additionally, the ingredients in the Isagenix products benefit your entire body and can boost your overall health and wellness.

Most diets don’t work because they are temporary solutions that don’t address the important elements of cleansing and nutritional replenishment, and don't help your body to shed pounds in a healthy way. Isagenix is not a diet; it’s a lifestyle that can give you results that you can maintain. Living a clean, lean and healthy lifestyle is easy and possible with Isagenix.

Unfortunately, getting older comes with a common consequence affecting up to 16 percent of elderly people – gradual reduction in brain size, which is associated with problems in learning and memory. However, a new study reports that daily supplementation with high doses of B vitamins may help slow the rate of brain degeneration.

Oxford researchers gave 168 individuals over the age of 70 supplements containing high doses of folic acid (0.8 milligrams per day), B6 (20 milligrams per day) and B12 (0.5 milligrams per day), or a placebo as part of a randomized, double-blind controlled trial. Then, following two years of the supplementation program, the participants’ brains were assessed using serial volumetric magnetic resonance imaging scans.

The researchers reported their results in the September issue of PLoS One: the rate of brain shrinkage, or atrophy, in the group taking the supplements was 53 percent lower in comparison to the group taking the placebo. Their conclusion was that the high doses of B vitamins slowed the rate of brain shrinkage in elderly with mild cognitive impairment.

According to the authors, however, it is still unclear which vitamin provided the greatest benefit for the brain. They found that the reduced rate of brain atrophy was a result of an increase in either vitamin B12 status or folic acid status, but could not conclude which of the two “vitamins is the most important.”

They added that vitamin B6 may be less important for brain health since there was a, “lack of association of atrophy with the change in cystathione levels, a marker of vitamin B6 status.”

Folic acid and vitamin B12 play a role in protecting the brain, most likely because their presence helps to lower the concentration of the amino acid homocysteine in plasma. Higher levels of homocysteine are a risk factor associated with smaller brain size as well as problems with learning and memory — as well as related to poor heart and cardiovascular health.

The study adds to emerging evidence that supplementation with B vitamins may be a convenient way for elderly to help support memory and learning.
by Andrea Frank Henkart, MA, CCE, CHHE, CNC
Nearly 1 in 3 American children are overweight or obese. Because this is such a growing tragedy, the President of the United States of America officially declared September 2010 as National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month. This declaration brings national attention to a growing epidemic among youth in the United States.

According to The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), 10.4 percent of American children ages 2 to 5 are obese, 19.6 percent of kids between 6 to 11 are obese, and 18.1 percent of adolescents ages 12 to 19 are obese. Pediatricians and gastroenterologists continue to link this obesity epidemic to an increasing number of children with diabetes, high blood pressure and liver disease. Experts blame:

The prevalence of junk food and sodas marketed to kids

Lack of exercise

Too much time watching television and playing video games

The decline in the number of families that take time to sit down and eat together

Toxicity in the environment

Statistics show that soda, French fries, potato chips, hamburgers and chocolate comprise 70 percent of the American diet. No wonder America’s health is so awful. Unfortunately, countries around the world are quickly catching up. Diets rich in fresh fruits and vegetables have given way to processed foods filled with fat, salt and sugar. New estimates indicate that about half a million children in Europe are combating the same kinds of health problems suffered by middle-aged adults simply because they are overweight.

The explosion in obesity rates and obesity-related diseases have made us keenly aware of the need to make global changes in our collective behavior. When it comes to our kids, we have to make sure the message is about healthful living, not just weight. In all their eagerness to stem the obesity epidemic, parents must make sure they do not damage their kids’ self-esteem by reinforcing negative body image. It is rare to find an adolescent girl who feels good about her body. Boys are increasingly affected as well.

Of course the media feeds into this frenzy by suggesting that if we look a certain way we can get what we want out of life. With all the lifting, tucking and nipping shown on TV, it is no wonder that girls are untrusting of their own bodies, while boys turn to steroids and other methods to alter the way they look. I highly recommend that parents change the focus from looking good to being healthy.

Be Supportive
Children usually know if they are overweight and do not need to be reminded or singled out. They need acceptance, encouragement and love.

Plan family activities that involve exercise. Instead of watching TV, go hiking or biking, wash the car or take an after-dinner walk. Offer choices, then let your kids decide which activity the family will participate in.

Set family agreements for the amount of time your kids can spend watching television or playing video games. Let your kids participate in the making of those agreements so they feel involved and in control. Re-negotiate whenever necessary.

Be sensitive. Find activities your children will enjoy that are not difficult or that could cause embarrassment.

Eat meals together as a family and eat at the table, not in front of a television. Eat slowly and enjoy your food.

Do not use food as a reward or punishment. Children should not be placed on restrictive diets, unless done so by a doctor for medical reasons. Children need healthy food for growth, development and energy. Buy organic meats, fruits and vegetables whenever you can to avoid harmful pesticides, hormones and antibiotics in your food.

Make Isagenix available to your kids. Offer IsaLean® Shakes, IsaLean® Bars, SlimCakes®, and Isagenix Snacks!™ Take turns blending the IsaLean Shakes and let your kids create their own healthy smoothies.

Involve your kids in meal planning and grocery shopping. This helps them learn and gives them a role in the decision making.

Keep healthy snacks on hand. Good options include fresh, organic fruits and vegetables, low-fat cheese, plenty of fresh water and IsaLean Bars. Look for non-allergenic, healthy snacks you can buy in your local health food store.

Armed with nutritional knowledge and honest concern for your child’s health, it is easy for food to become a source of conflict, especially if you have teenagers in the house.

Avoid bargaining or bribing kids to eat (or not eat as the case may be) and avoid using dessert as a prize. Do not force your kids to finish their food. This just teaches them to ignore their own feelings of fullness.

A better strategy may be to give your kids some control by letting them decide when they are hungry and when they are full. You are still in control over which foods are available at home, both at mealtime and between meals by only buying healthy, wholesome, nutritionally rich food.

Long-term good health is less an accident than the result of good habits and wise choices. Habits that include eating nutritious foods and understanding the relationship between physical and emotional health will help your child grow up healthy. Good nutrition does not mean that your children cannot eat their favorite foods or that they have to eat foods they do not like. Just monitor the sugary snacks, fast food and fatty desserts whenever possible. To enjoy good health now and in the future, learn how to create balance through eating right, exercising, getting enough sleep and controlling stress.

When people talk of “turning back the clock” or living in perpetual youth, it’s all too easy to write them off as quacks or having watched a little too much science fiction—but that’s not so when talking with molecular biologist Bill Andrews, Ph.D., who has studied aging at the molecular level for more than 15 years.
Dr. Andrews is one of the world’s authorities on the biology of telomeres, which are sequences of repetitive non-coding DNA segments found at the ends of chromosomes. Telomeres, commonly likened to the plastic tips on shoelaces (perhaps too simply, says Dr. Andrews), protect chromosomes from damage and decrease each time a cell divides and replicates.

The length of telomeres is directly linked to age. When we are born our telomeres are long, but they shorten with each cell cycle as cells continually divide. Telomere length is the nearest measure that science has ever found to determine lifespan in humans, horses, dogs and cats—it acts as an the internal “hourglass” or “biological clock” for aging.

A genuine measure in humans for determining lifespan is groundbreaking medical science – so much that Dr. Andrews says he is delighted that his colleagues Drs. Elizabeth Blackburn, Carol Greider, and Jack Szozstak won a Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2009 for their own discoveries in telomere biology.
His own breakthrough finding was the detection of an enzyme called telomerase, which acts directly on telomeres to replace DNA bases that have been lost to cell division. It’s a key finding because telomerase can be produced by all types of human cells if they are given an appropriate signal, a signal that could ”reverse aging” and increase the lifespan in humans.

Who wouldn’t want to live a longer, healthier life past 125? The potential to increase healthy lifespan is the reason that Dr. Andrews has screened thousands of compounds searching for ones that stimulate telomerase activity.

Enter John Anderson

Isagenix Founder and Master Formulator John Anderson

On Aug. 22 at Isagenix Celebration 2010 in San Diego, Isagenix Founder and Master Formulator John Anderson announced that Isagenix will enter into the forefront of anti-aging products. He also introduced Dr. Andrews and new research they will work on together.

“Dr. Andrews developed the technology to test, verify the activity, and authenticate the effectiveness of natural ingredients that will turn back our human time clock,” said Anderson. “My role will be to search the world for botanicals, natural bacteria and other materials that hold the secrets of youth. These ingredients will undergo full screening by Dr. Andrews to verify its activity, whether or not there’s a ‘hit’.”
Giving credit where it’s due, Dr. Andrews and Anderson said the “genius” plan to work together actually came from Peter Greenlaw, a top Isagenix Associate. Greenlaw was fascinated with Dr. Andrews and his research.

But Dr. Andrews had focused almost completely on drugs and chemicals until Greenlaw suggested to him, “Why not try natural products? I know just the man you need to meet. He has been working with natural botanicals and has formulated thousands of natural products for more than 30 years.”

Dr. Andrews said the idea was brilliant, so Greenlaw arranged for Anderson and Dr. Andrews to meet together on the project. When they met, Dr. Andrews became immediately impressed with Anderson’s vast knowledge of herbs and botanicals while Anderson was impressed with Dr. Andrews.

While awaiting age reversal, slow telomere shortening

Dr. Andrews, discoverer of telomerase

As promising as the discovery of telomerase is in the science of antiaging, Dr. Andrews and Anderson say that for the time being people should focus on implementing the known lifestyle changes that reduce the rate of telomere shortening.

While on stage at Celebration, Dr. Andrews shared that these lifestyle changes included quitting smoking, exercising, and reducing stress.

Dr. Andrews also said that Isagenix products should be added to an antiaging regimen, “There have been at least three publications in the last year showing that some dietary supplements can help slow telomere shortening. When I looked at the ingredients in Ageless Essentials [Daily Pack], I found they were all in there. Isagenix put some real thought into this.”

The company’s Ageless Essentials Daily Pack features AM and PM packets containing key antiaging-focused products: Ageless Actives, Essentials for Men/Women, IsaOmega Supreme and C-Lyte.

Dr. Andrews explained that the three publications he referred to found positive correlations between longer telomeres and antioxidants, vitamin D, and fish oil omega-3 fatty acids.

As a person actively engaged in extending his own lifespan (he wears a pin on his suit-coat lapel that says “Cure Aging or Die Trying”), Dr. Andrews said he was delighted to start using the Ageless Essentials Daily Pack right away because of its convenience for getting all the nutrients he needs.

Ageless Essentials Daily Pack is a convenient way to receive key antiaging nutrients.

Determined to Defeat Aging
Convenience comes at a high value to a person who is as resolved to defeat aging as Dr. Andrews – determination is a defining characteristic of the man, who also happens to be a regular on the ultra-marathon running scene.

“When I or somebody else is healthy enough to run a seven-minute mile when they’re 130 years old, that’s when I’m going to know that we’ve cured aging,” Dr. Andrews said. “That’s my benchmark. I love life, I never want to die, and I plan on running a 100-mile race when I’m 100 years old.”

Dr. Andrews suggests that with healthy lifestyle habits such as regular exercise, eating right, and taking Ageless Essentials Daily Pack, we could all join him in staying healthy long enough to see radical reversal of aging in our futures.

With Dr. Andrews and Anderson working on telomerase research together, we can expect the day of increasing healthy life spans to come sooner rather than later.
A new report reviews how fasting affects fat and cholesterol, which also may apply to Cleanse Days.

Harvard researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital have found that fasting causes an enzyme (SIRT1)to shut down production of fat and cholesterol, which could open up the scientific field to studying new approaches for lowering weight and improving lipid profiles.

Fasting has been previously known to suppress proteins called SREBPs, which are responsible for controlling fat synthesis and storage, butthe mechanism was not well understood. The researchers reportedthat after a series of experiments in worms, fruitflies and mice they found that fasting acts directly on SIRT1, one of a family of sirtuin enzymes, thereby down-regulating these SREBPs.

Sirtuin enzymes have become an active area of research since early 2000s because of findings that stimulation of sirtuin activity—via calorie restriction, intermittent fasting and compounds such as resveratrol—protected mice fed a high-calorie diet against weight gain, and increased the lifespan in nematode worms, fruitflies, fish and rodents.

Geneticists and medical researchers are only just beginning to understand how genes encode sirtuin enzymes, how the enzymes influence energy metabolism, and investigating various drugs as possible candidates to stimulate SIRT1.

Fasting and Cleanse Days

The study may potentially offer new insights into the science behind Isagenix products and systems.”The biological mechanism by which fasting turns off the proteins that stimulate fat and cholesterol synthesis may explain partially our success with our two weight-loss programs, where we incorporate one to two days per week of Cleanse Days, whichwe’ve shownsuccessfully produce healthy weight loss in adults,” says Susie Rockway, Ph.D., director of Isagenix Research and Science.

Dr. Rockway adds, “Similarly, the new study is interestingas it could have other implications because it offers support to intermittent fasting, or Cleanse Days, as a potential alternative to caloric restriction for stimulating SIRT1.”

In late April, Dr. Rockway presented the results of two pilot studies—a nine-day study and 28-day study—both of which found Isagenix products and Cleanse Days supported adults with healthy weight loss, maintaining healthy lipid profiles. The studies also found subjects felt better about their weight, health and energy levels.

Cleanse Days— days of limited food calories and water complemented by the botanical-based detox drink, Cleanse for Life—are a component of the Isagenix Cleansing and Fat Burning System, a nutritional program developed by the company to help customers achieve their health goals with cleansing and detoxification, replenishing with proper diet and nutrition, and controlling caloric intake.

Keep your clothes on. The jury is still out on this medical phenomenon. But here are some discoveries that are sure to lead to more sex, and hopefully, fewer headaches! There is not a study out there that emphatically states that sex cures headaches. But on the other hand, there are studies that suggest that it might. And that's good news - in more ways than one!

Tumor cells fed both glucose and fructose used the two sugars in two different ways, the team at the University of California Los Angeles found.

They said their finding, published in the journal Cancer Research, may help explain other studies that have linked fructose intake with pancreatic cancer, one of the deadliest cancer types.

"These findings show that cancer cells can readily metabolize fructose to increase proliferation," Dr. Anthony Heaney of UCLA's Jonsson Cancer Center and colleagues wrote.

"They have major significance for cancer patients given dietary refined fructose consumption, and indicate that efforts to reduce refined fructose intake or inhibit fructose-mediated actions may disrupt cancer growth."

Americans take in large amounts of fructose, mainly in high fructose corn syrup, a mix of fructose and glucose that is used in soft drinks, bread and a range of other foods. Politicians, regulators, health experts and the industry have debated whether high fructose corn syrup and other ingredients have been helping make Americans fatter and less healthy. Too much sugar of any kind not only adds pounds, but is also a key culprit in diabetes, heart disease and stroke, according to the American Heart Association.

Several states, including New York and California, have weighed a tax on sweetened soft drinks to defray the cost of treating obesity-related diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer. The American Beverage Association, whose members include Coca-Cola (KO.N) and Kraft Foods (KFT.N) have strongly, and successfully, opposed efforts to tax soda. [ID:nN12233126]

The industry has also argued that sugar is sugar. Heaney said his team found otherwise. They grew pancreatic cancer cells in lab dishes and fed them both glucose and fructose. Tumor cells thrive on sugar but they used the fructose to proliferate. "Importantly, fructose and glucose metabolism are quite different," Heaney's team wrote. "I think this paper has a lot of public health implications. Hopefully, at the federal level there will be some effort to step back on the amount of high fructose corn syrup in our diets," Heaney said in a statement.
Now the team hopes to develop a drug that might stop tumor cells from making use of fructose.

U.S. consumption of high fructose corn syrup went up 1,000 percent between 1970 and 1990, researchers reported in 2004 in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
Consuming soft drinks is bad for so many reasons that science cannot even state all the consequences. But one thing we know for sure is that drinking a cola, as a representative of soft drinks, wreaks havoc on the human organism. What happens? Writer Wade Meredith has shown the quick progression of it’s assault.

The main problem is sugar. It’s an evil that the processed food industry and sugar growers don’t want people to know about. Even dietitians, financially supported by sugar growers and sugary product manufacturers, are loathe to tell us the truth.

Don’t believe that dietitians are influenced by huge corporate concerns that feed people sugar, drugs and other health-defying ingredients? Go to their official website and check out the sponsors yourself. They are right there in plain sight: http://www.eatright.org/corporatesponsors/

When somebody drinks a cola watch what happens…

In The First 10 minutes: 10 teaspoons of sugar hit your system. (100% of your recommended daily intake.) You don’t immediately vomit from the overwhelming sweetness because phosphoric acid cuts the flavor allowing you to keep it down.

20 minutes: Your blood sugar spikes, causing an insulin burst. Your liver responds to this by turning any sugar it can get its hands on into fat. (There’s plenty of that at this particular moment)

40 minutes: Caffeine absorption is complete. Your pupils dilate, your blood pressure rises, as a response your livers dumps more sugar into your bloodstream. The adenosine receptors in your brain are now blocked preventing drowsiness.

45 minutes: Your body ups your dopamine production stimulating the pleasure centers of your brain. This is physically the same way heroin works, by the way.

>60 minutes: The phosphoric acid binds calcium, magnesium and zinc in your lower intestine, providing a further boost in metabolism. This is compounded by high doses of sugar and artificial sweeteners also increasing the urinary excretion of calcium.

>60 Minutes: The caffeine’s diuretic properties come into play. (It makes you have to pee.) It is now assured that you’ll evacuate the bonded calcium, magnesium and zinc that was headed to your bones as well as sodium, electrolyte and water.

>60 minutes: As the rave inside of you dies down you’ll start to have a sugar crash. You may become irritable and/or sluggish. You’ve also now, literally, pissed away all the water that was in the Coke. But not before infusing it with valuable nutrients your body could have used for things like even having the ability to hydrate your system or build strong bones and teeth.

So there you have it, an avalanche of destruction in a single can. Imagine drinking this day after day, week after week. Stick to water, real juice from fresh squeezed fruit, and tea without sweetener.
How could it not?

For a few months now I have been quietly observing all the excitement over the HCG diet. Its claim is that you can lose a pound a day seems very inviting to others. We are a society of instant gratification and I know how hard it is sometimes to release pounds and inches while just eating healthy and exercising.

So along comes a claim that HCG can help you lose 1 pound a day! Now that’s something to get excited about, right?

I rarely take a strong stance against diets, nutritional programs out there but I just have to say that with this one, it seems that “common sense” has flown out the window.

At first, I was intrigued to find out about it because losing a pound a day seems like it must be really effective, but then as I researched it more, it was like — DUH! You have to reduce your calorie intake to 500 calories per day.

There are many other restricitions to the diet that would cause you to lose pounds and inches.

“What little food can be consumed is supposed to be high in protein and low in starches, carbohydrates and high-fat foods. Alcohol is forbidden, and updated versions of the diet sometimes include additional appetite suppressants, such as daily injections of phentermine or other stimulants.”

I can tell you that anyone that reduces their calorie intake this low and reduces their intake of carbs, high fats, starches and alcohol will lose weight. But how safe is that…not to mention the “rebound” effect after you resume eating normally. From my opinion, you have just put your body into massive “starvation mode.” And hence, this will start all the “yo-yo” dieting urges in the body.

Now I am not a medical professional but I do have common sense and have coached 100s of others through Nutritional Cleansing for the past 8 years so I do know a lot about what works and what does not.

Also, who knows the long-term effects of pumping a pregnant women’s hormone into your body? There are just too many unanswered questions regarding this and the results may not even be attributed to the actual injection…. like I said, most people would see drastic results with that type of regimin without HCG–but a what cost.

Do your own research. Read about how people feel on it, the hair loss, the hunger pains, the lack of sleep, etc….
Here’s another article to get you started but go google it and I challenge you to really do your homework before you start this program.
http://www.dietsinreview.com/diet_column/07/hcg-diet-look-elsewhere-for-weight-loss/

If you want to try something that is safe, organic, gets results, do-able and cost effective and will set your body up for long term success and not just immediate results and then rebound, let me know! We have created rapid weight loss results in a clinical study but it’s with super high grade nutrition and cleansing–part of an overall total health program.

For more information on our program, click here: http://www.healthymatrix.org

Go Into Business For Yourself, But Not By Yourself

http://healthymatrix.net

Our business is based on the belief that there are simple solutions to the seeming dilemma of being stuck in the working class for life. We believe those solutions are based on enabling the entrepreneurial spirit and helping people find a proven way to become financially independent. People spend their entire life working, then retiring with need because they haven't accepted the existence of a bona fide alternative.

The logic of our approach is so simple, it seems ridiculously obvious: Start a modest business with the power to change your future forever. We know of a system that provides upward mobility for those who devote 7-10 hrs/wk to their future, while still earning a salary and doing the other things necessary in life. Given this, our focused mission is on helping those who chose to work part time for 3-5 yrs to establish leveraged, residual income. And so, we suggest an affordable home based business that freed us financially and we mentor the personal growth needed for success. We work with our new associates and we all accomplish more together than any of us can separately.

Our intention is greater than making it possible for people to move into the upper class. It also takes the focus off charity or government programs as one's only option for sustaining life in later years. It permits the dignity of self-sustainability. It provides the lifestyle opportunities available to the privileged few with a life of ease earned by their efforts and their vision in offering others the same opportunity, and helping with its fulfillment.

If this revelation of one's ability to break out of the working class seems obvious, it hasn't been obvious for most people. It won't be obvious to many until offered the opportunity by another person who is also working on this noble goal - perhaps someone like you.

The only sustainable, scalable approach to fighting mundane lifestyles to give ordinary people a way of increasing their income; to treat the average person as a potential entrepreneur, rather than as an eventual recipient of social assistance.

When shown an alternative - when placed at a crossroads requiring a choice between the same path now traveled, or a new path – the decision is ultimately an individual one. One decision can change one's future forever. If this finds you at a time when you would like to change your future, I assure you I remember when I needed such change and I hold out my hand in a sincere invitation to work together to do something meaningful in our time.

Our contact site for more information: http://www.healthymatrix.net
