So, life has settled down some and I have lots of reviews to post..... I come on and begin to look around at things I need to update and my design is GONE! My header, signature, rating system, contact links...you get the picture........ Where did it go?????????

I contacted the designer and will wait to hear back from her..... don't want to mess it up anymore than it already is!! I loved my Phantom of the Opera theme!!!

Hello!!!!!!

Wow, it seems that it has been forever ago that I was last able to post. For those of you who are still here, THANK YOU!! The past months have been a little crazy..... have had some things to deal with.... sickness, moved to a new house, finished a semester of grad school, started a new Mon-Fri job and I started my own business on the side.... That's not to mention the everyday things that happen to us all. I have been keeping up with some of the things that have gone on in the blogging world and I sure do hate that I missed BEA!!

Over the next week or so, I am going to attempt to update some of my side bars (seems some photos are MIA)..... Also be watching for some of the reviews that I have coming... I haven't been able to read much the past few months, but the ones that I have read have been really good!

Now I have to go and see if I can figure out the new Blogger dashboard that has changed!! Hope you all have a great Sunday!!!!

Stand alones or series? Ack. This one is hard. They both have merit. But if I had to choose…. I would say series. I like really getting to know my characters.

Ancient Greece or Dark Ages England? Ancient Greece. I wouldn’t want to wear all of the layers of clothes from the Dark Ages.

Guinevere or Heleyne? Heleyne. (And not only because of Lucan…)

Mythology or reality? Mythology…because anything can happen.

Knight in shining armor or boy next door? Knight in shining armor. I have a thing for strong, brave men. (But who doesn’t?)

I haven't read a King book in many years. After reading this one, I will definitely have to go back and catch up.

What if you could go back and change the past? Would you do it? What if by doing so, you changed everything...the good and the bad?

The premise of the story involved Jake Epping/George Amberson traveling back in time to prevent the assassination of JFK from happening. During his travel, he prevents some other horrible things as well...but by doing so, he changed everyone's life, including his own.

Yes, this book is 800+ pages, but once the story captures you, it won't seem as long. You will be transported back to a simpler time, to lindyhopping, to a world where bad things didn't happen, people trusted each other and a person's word was all it took to make a deal.

Jake/George is an English teacher who is asked by a friend to help him prevent the assassination. He travels back to September 1958 and everything changes. There is no horror in this story that King is known for, but some horrible things happen... or do they? There is also a love story that unfolds...but the ending may surprise you. Friends and enemies are made, bets are won, lives are lost and changed forever.

I loved how the story unfolded and "reset" several times and each time a string to the original past was left. If you like time travel with lots of "what if's" thrown in, I think that you will enjoy this story.

Hello everyone! I hope that all who celebrate Thanksgiving had a wonderful day yesterday spent with family and friends. If you are one of the brave souls who are out shopping today, be careful... it can be pure craziness! It just doesn't seem like Christmas should be just a few weeks away.

When You're Not Reading: What occupies your time

when your nose isn't stuck in a book?

When I'm not reading, I am usually working, spending time with family, or surfing Goodreads, Barnes & Noble, or any other book related site. I know, I know!

I work in an open heart ICU and love it, but sometimes it wears on you physically and emotionally. It's great to see the people get better and be able to return home to their families, and then there are the ones who don't do well. The group of people that I work with are really great and we are all supportive of each other when we "need a moment"

I have two grown boys who I love to spend time with. They always keep me on my toes by being typical boys, they keep me laughing, grounded and aware of what really matters. I would rather spend time with them than I had any other people.

I also have an amazing grandson who is THE best. Nothing better than coming in from work and him meeting me at the door with "Mimi, I missed you!"

And coming up in January, I am going back to graduate school. They always say that the medical field is a never ending education and they would be correct! It will drastically cut into my reading "for fun" time...but that's ok too, right??

Who doesn't know the story of Romeo & Juliet?? Once you read this book and learn of the twists, turns, secrets and truths... it will make you wonder if you ever really knew the story at all.

This book is a modern take on Romeo & Juliet. Julie Jacobs inherits a key to a safety deposit box in Italy after her aunt passes away suddenly. She travels to Italy hoping and expecting to find riches and money. Instead she finds that she has inherited a mystery and must complete her parents work to stop a curse on her family. She also learns that she is a direct descendant of "the" Juliet.

The story moves back and forth between modern day and 1340, weaving the past and present together and the true story of the doomed lovers. I loved how the story kept me guessing about who really were the bad ones, the good ones and the ones in between. It combines that mystery of underground tunnels, cold crypts, sacred cathedrals, & secret identities. It moves at a great pace, and just when you think you have it figured out.... you are wrong. The rich details, amazing writing and well researched history made this a great story.

2012 Debut Author Challenge

2012 New Author Challenge

The idea behind this is to find new authors that you’ve never tried before, not necessarily ones that are debuting. They can be in your genre of choice or be brave and try something new. You never know what you’re going to like until you try it. If you’re looking for some suggestions, you can check out the Author page here at Literary Escapism or the 2009, 2010 and 2011 Challenge pages. With over 1000 reviews posted, I’m sure there will be something there for everyone.
Here are the guidelines:

The challenge will run from January 1, 2012 through December 31, 2012.
Since this is an author challenge, there is no restriction on choosing your novels. They can definitely be from other challenges. However, the authors must be new to you and, preferably from novels. Anthologies are a great way to try someone new, but only a third of your new authors can be from anthologies.
I want this to be an easy challenge, so you can pick to do either 15, 25 or 50 new authors. It all depends on how fast you read and how adventurous you want to be. For me, I want to say I’m going to do another 50 new authors, but with two kids, I didn’t made my goal in 2011, so I’m going to be smarter and say 25. If you reach your goal halfway through the year, don’t stop. Any new author you try can be added to Mr. Linky. We all want to know about your new experience.
After reading your new author, write your review and then come back here and add your link to Mr. Linky. Make sure you include your name and the author, but adding the title is completely up to you.

Review: The Rose Garden

My Thoughts:
The premise to this story is that our main character, Eva, returns to her childhood vacation place to scatter the ashes of her sister to a place "where she was always happy".

Leaving behind her life in LA, Eva is reunited with friends of her childhood at Trelowarth House on the Cornish coast. Upon arriving at the house, strange things begin to happen and Eva thinks that she is slowly losing her mind because of the grief she is dealing with over the recent loss of her sister.

Slowly, Eva realizes that she is able to travel in time back to the 1700's and to the Trelowarth house of that time...and its inhabitants. She meets Daniel Butler, his brother Jack and his friend Fergal. Now she has to decide where she really belongs and where she is really happy.

This was my first book by Kearsley, but I doubt that it will be my last. As I read this, I was reminded some of The Time Traveler's Wife , which I loved. As I got more into the book, I could picture Gena Rowlands as Claire and Richard Gere as Daniel Butler (anyone remember The First Knight?)

I enjoyed the way the story was told, the writing, the emotion, the elegance of it all. The descriptions made me feel as if I were walking through the rose gardens themselves, I could feel the drafts through the old house, and the excitement of seeing grandparents meet for the first time.

Kearsley did an excellent job in weaving all the characters and their stories together. The twists, turns and revelations kept me reading into the early hours. It was definitely one of those books that I wanted to keep reading, but at the same time, didn't want it to end.

If you enjoyed The Time Traveler's Wife, Outlander, or even The Forgotten Garden I think that you would enjoy this book.

I just wanted to take the time to apologize for my absence the past couple of months. I have had so much going on that I have had a hard time figuring out which way was which.

I had started a new job working 60+ hours/week, got put on medical leave due to some health issues, and moved into a new house.... most of that just during the months of Sept/Oct.

I am on the mend physically and the health issues are resolving (I hope) and I am settling into my new house. I still have some things to work out, move around and organize...but it's coming along slowly.

If I owe you a review, it will be coming.... just may take longer than expected. I haven't picked up the first book since September. If you have sent me a review request, I will respond to you in the next couple of weeks.

Review: The Shadowing: Hunted (Book 1)

Talk about getting that creepy feeling as you are reading!! This book is definitely one that you don’t want to read at night, alone, when it’s storming outside.

Callum has always been able to see ghosts and is beginning to have premonitions. Callum is the kind of boy who knows that he is different and does everything that he can to “fly under the radar”. The premonitions are becoming stronger, the ghosts seem afraid and Callum realizes something is after him. The deserted churches, the creepy graveyards and the howling of a distant animal keeps the story moving at a great pace throughout the book.

I loved that “The Hunter” wasn’t revealed early in the book and it added to the mystery of the story. This character had all the creepiness that I love in a suspense/horror book.

Gran is Callums grandmother who he lives with. She tends to ignore things that she can’t see or that isn’t practical, but as the story unfolds, you learn that Gran isn’t everything that she appears to be. As the premonitions come true, Gran tells of secrets that have been left untold, but still leave you wanting to learn more.

This is a great beginning to a YA paranormal series by Adam Slater. The only thing is I would have liked it to have been a little longer and played the story out some more….but the Epilogue revealed some things that promises to bring more of that creepiness that I loved so much about this book. This is a great book for males to read as it doesn’t have the “romance” in it that so many YA paranormal books do now. It’s a great beginning and I look forward to reading the next installment.

Review: Paranormalcy

Yes, I know I am probably the last one on the planet to read this book. I hate that it took me so long to read it. Having a day at home (thank you oral surgery)... I spent the afternoon visting with the quick witted, sarcastic, pink loving main character, Evie.

Evie is a normal 16 year old girl who has been raised at the IPCA (International Paranomal Containment Agency) since she was 8. Ok, so normal may not be the right word... I mean she can see through the glamours of all paranormal creatures....her best friend is a mermaid....and her ex-boyfriend is a faerie.....normal, right?

Evie's job is to help "bag and tag" paranormal creatures to help protect humans. One day, a paranormal breaks into the IPCA and her life as she knew it is never the same.

The story is paced just right, the different paranormals are all there. Mermaids, faerie, werwolves, vampires, trolls...you name it, it's there. The twists in the story make you wonder what is going to happen next, the friendships are great... and the developing romance is wonderful, the action and mystery. Nothing too fast, nothing too mature..it was perfect.

I loved how Evie and the other characters developed throughout the story, and some were left just as mysterious as they were in the beginning. Evie is a great main character and I love how she begins to see herself in a different light as the book goes along.

Just enough was revealed to help you understand some of the background, but at the same time it leaves you wanting and anticpating the next in the series.

If you are looking for a fast paced, paranormal, different from all others YA... this is the book for you.

I can remember exactly where I was the day our country took a hit to the face, a gut punch, and changed us forever. I happened to be doing home care nursing at the time and was at a patient’s house. The day started like any other lining up the visits for the day, making sure that I had all the supplies I needed, and that all the patients for the day knew I was coming.

I was at the first patient’s house. I was chatting with the patient and family, had drawn some lab work, changed the IV dressing and was starting the IV medication when the patient all of a sudden said “What the hell?!” For this patient to have said that, I knew that something was wrong. I turned toward the television and saw it. The images that were shown looked like something out of a movie. Debris falling, smoke, fire, people running and people in shock. The reporters were in shock, stumbling over their words, and trying to get all the information they could to share with the world.

In That Day in September Artie Van Why shares his personal account of September 11, 2001. He worked at a law firm just a short distance from the World Trade Center. He felt the shake of the building as the first plane hit; he saw the second plane hit, the debris, the smoke, the fires..Everything I saw on television at that moment, he was living it. In his book, he shares his thoughts, his fears, his feelings and his life surrounding that day. As I was reading this, I could remember all the images I saw, but I could see them as if I were there. He also shares how he dealt with life in the weeks after the attack and since that day. I found myself nodding to some of his thoughts and feelings “yes, I thought the same thing”, or “I feel the same way”; even though I live in the Southeast and was hundreds of miles away.

Mr. Van Why self-published this book because he wanted to get his story of that day out. He wanted to do it for many reasons, one to help remember the lives of those lost that day and two to help the survivors know that they are not alone. With the 10^th anniversary of that day being here, I can’t think of a better way to remember the lives of everyone touched by that day than to read this story and be reminded of what a wonderful place we live and the hope we all have.

Review: Halfway to the Grave

Review:

Take a half-vampire/half-human, Master Vampire, an irritating mother, and lots of bad guys and you have a great story with Cat and Bones.

This is my first Jeaniene Frost book and I really enjoyed it. I loved the fact that Cat is a kick-ass heroine and stops at nothing to get the job done...even if it means that she goes against the wishes of Bones.

What do I say about Bones......... One of the best Vampires... put the glitter to the side and see what a real vampire is all about. He's strong, determined, witty, charming and can be scary as hell.

I loved that this book had wit and humor, innuendos, lots of action and wasn't overpowered with the romance.

Cat & Bones quickly became a favorite couple. They had the chemistry, the love-hate relationship, the partners in crime all rolled into one. I can't wait to read the next in the series.

August 23: Top Ten Books You Loved But Never Wrote A Review For

Most of these I read before I started my blog... but for some reason I never did a review on Goodreads either. Brain lapse??

I loved this book as well as the first one (The Bronze Horseman). I don't know why I never wrote a review for it though other than I read it before I started my blog. I guess I'm waiting to visit again with Tatiana & Alexander in the 3rd and final book The Summer Garden. Tatiana & Alexander are two people who I love to join in Russia & New York.

LOVED this story... I have the next two in the series waiting to be read. I have it

marked as "review to come" on my shelves on Goodreads...but alas, no review yet.

What can I say about this one?? Another that I read before I began my blog. I absolutely loved this book. This author always blows me away with his stories and his writing.

An amazing story of a little Jewish girl during WWII. This story was a gut wrenching story that left me in tears at times.

A twisting tale of a man badly injured in a car accident who meets a nurse. The nurse insists that they knew each other in another life... medieval Germany.

An amazing story of a woman who fought for her life during the hardest of times against Islamic fundamentalists.

A story of a cellist who insists on continuing to play in the middle of Sarajevo as mortar bombings happen around him.

A story written in the voice of women in Afghanistan. It showed the strong will and character of women in a country where women have no rights.

I LOVE anything by Michael Palmer. I love that he adds his true medical knowledge to some really gripping mysteries and thrillers.

I read this book in 2 days even though it was pretty lengthy. I loved the story of Clare and how she lived with never knowing when Henry would appear and disappear.
