Winner of the 2011 AALL Leadership Academy Grant

For the first time this year, the ALL-SIS offered the AALL Leadership Academy Grant. The ALL-SIS Awards Committee invited ALL-SIS members who were accepted into the Academy to apply for the $1,000.00 grant. Some of the requirements for receiving the grant were financial need, potential for a future leadership role, agreeing to serve on one of ALL-SIS Committees and writing a short article for the Newsletter following the receipt of the grant.

The ALL-SIS Awards Committee is pleased to announce the winner of the 2011 AALL Leadership Academy Grant. Congratulations to Jennifer L. Wondracek of Lawton Chiles Legal Information Center at the University of Florida who is the winner of this year’s AALL Leadership Academy Grant.

AALL Leadership Academy Grant

AALL offers Leadership Academy to its newer members to train for leadership roles. It is “designed as an intensive experience aimed at growing and developing leadership skills.” The ALL-SIS offers $1,000 grant to an ALL-SIS member to attend the Leadership Academy. The ALL-SIS Awards Committee invites applications for the AALL Leadership Academy Grant to ALL-SIS members who are accepted into the Academy.

Criteria:

To qualify for the Grant, the winner must be an ALL-SIS member who is accepted into the 2011 AALL Leadership Academy with demonstrated financial need. The winner must: (1) agree to accept an ALL-SIS committee position the year following the academy and (2) write a short article for the ALL-SIS Newsletter about the AALL Leadership Academy.

Submission Procedure:

To apply for the 2011 AALL Leadership Academy grant, submit (1) a current resume and (2) two letters of recommendation (at least one from someone in a supervisory or managerial role) that discuss your potential to contribute to the leadership role in academic law librarianship and your need for the grant. The Grant recipient will be chosen, in large part, based on demonstrated financial need. Send the resume and letters of recommendation to the ALL-SIS Awards Committee Chair (patrumm@fiu.edu), by Friday, September 16, 2011.

ALL-SIS New discussion platform

5 years ago this September, the listserv program was born. (Yet another great invention of the heady-days of the 80′s). Until now nothing has taken its place as the primary tool for groups to privately share ideas and preserve the conversation.

Today ALL-SIS is leaving our listserv and moving to a new eGroups platform through AALLNET. As we say goodbye to the other 80′s invention, the Space Shuttle program, let’s part ways with the ALL-SIS list.

Below are instructions from Chris Siwa on how to continue our discussion with 21 century technology.

I just wanted to inform you that I have completed the SIS discussion list migration from the current discussion list platform to the new, enhanced eGroups on the My Communities platform. All of the main SIS communities are synced with the SIS rosters in our membership database, and all current AALL members that are up-to-date with their SIS membership dues have been added to their respective communities.

Please remind your SIS members to update their notification settings if they haven’t already.

1. To update your notification settings, go to My Communities http://community.aallnet.org and click on My Subscriptions under the Discussions tab. Then you may opt to receive notifications in real time, as a daily digest, PDA (real time, but in plain text format for mobile devices), opt to not receive any emails, or unsubscribe altogether.

2. Please also make sure to whitelist or add to your safe senders the following email addresses:

b. noreply@notifications.aallnet.org

2011 ALL-SIS Faculty Services Roundtable

Please join us at this year’s Faculty Services Roundtable on Monday, July 25th from 12:00-1:00 in PCC Room 304, where we will discuss the five timely topics listed below that touch on many of the challenges that arise when striving to provide faculty with topnotch services. We hope to see you there for what promises to be a lively and informative discussion!

Westlaw Next one year later and LexisAdvance – what do we tell the faculty and legal research instructors?

How proactive can we be (should we be) in sending information/tips/tricks to the faculty, especially for non-legal sources?

Research assistants – how can we work with them effectively? What issues/problems (training, communication, etc.) have you encountered, and how do you handle them?

When/How can we draw the line when the faculty ask for too much? Is there too much?

Recruiting faculty to use the library – how can we draw them in?
