Toilet Training Cats: Why you should do it

Cats, like humans, need to relieve themselves every day. But unlike us, they don’t care where they do it. We, on the other hand, go to the bathroom when nature calls. They don’t. But they can be trained to use the litter box or even the toilet if you let them. Is it really necessary to do that?

Well for starters, cat’s urine and fecal matter emit a very strong odor, and you don’t want that greeting you the moment you step into your home; a fact that your visitors hope not to encounter as well. Then there’s the issue of sanitation. Waste material is a breeding ground for all sorts of bacteria and germs and you wouldn’t want them spreading around your house. And you have to remember that cats are carnivorous and when you’re away there’s always a possibility that they can devour rats or other smaller animals which can carry diseases that would put your life at risk. Finally, it would be much easier to clean after if you know where to find them.

Before you read manuals or instruction books on toilet training cats, always bear in mind that like humans, they are also unique from each other. What may have worked for the author’s cat may not be suitable to yours so you always have to be willing to adjust your methods of teaching.

Practice is the key to training. In a cat’s case, it’s all about repetition until it gets used to using the litter box or your toilet. Animals rarely deviate from their lifestyle patterns but make sure the area you place the litter box is accessible all the time or your bath room door is always open, otherwise you’ll break the routine you worked so hard to establish.

Finally, toilet training cats should be done out of caring for your pet and not just another chore to do at home. After all, it’s you who chose to live with them.
