An up-close look at an Alaskan grizzly bear trying to eat a camera, from the camera's point of view.

A fascinating video of a grizzly bear in Alaska trying to eat a GoPro video camera.

There must have been a (human) smell on the camera which interested the grizzly, but he only lightly chewed on the camera case.

It’s not like the Napoleon fish who ate the same brand of camera and spit it out, but it’s still interesting to see the inside of the mouth of a grizzly. From afar.

Adorable. How often do you get to say that about a police chase video?

The Portland Police Department released a video yesterday of a high-speed chase of a speeder going 52 in a 35MPH zone.

Traffic Officer Mark James pursued the scoundrel, and caught it all on tape.

Rather than provide a spoiler, just watch the video. It’s only 1:31 long. You’ll be glad you did.

The harrowing tale of a small dog, an ice cube, and epic misunderstandings.

So I was making some lemonade today, even though it was only in the upper 50s in DC. And an ice cube invariably slipped away from me and hit the floor. So I figured I’d feed it to Sasha, my yorkie-bichon mix, since she did like ice cubes as a puppy.

Well.

Let’s just say, I won’t be giving Sasha any more ice cubes.

After you get done checking out Sasha vs the ice cube, feel free to browse through the rest of the of the “Sasha versus…” collection, including such hits as:

Sasha vs. Petey the Cocker Spaniel (Joe’s dog)

and Sasha versus the big orange pylon

And while it’s not a “Sasha versus…” video, I can’t let a post about Sasha videos pass without linking to this one of my nephew holding Sasha before I bought her. We were making the video to show my sister, his mom, who is the final arbiter of dogs.

You might not the color change from that first video to today. Yorkie mixes can change color significantly, and repeatedly, over their lives. Sasha started off with a lot of dark apricot and even some black, then turned almost entirely cream, and now is shifting back to apricot again, though not as much as she was when I first got her.

And with no further ado, Sasha vs the ice cube:

A Napoleon wrasse ate a video camera, that recorded the entire experience - the the fish spit it out.

Someone from the Musée océanographique de Monaco had a run in with a Napoleon wrasse on a reef. These fish can be fairly large and of course, underwater, they appear to be even larger. Fortunately the fish ate the camera, then spit it out after finding the taste and texture less than desirable.

I’m not a fan of Monaco, but I do love the aquarium at the museum. They renovated it a few years ago, but still managed to keep the old school feel to it, with collections from around the world.

An adorable story of a fireman saving a woman's cat from a fire, along with an iconic photo of the rescue.

This story is from a few years back, but it’s so adorable. A woman had a fire at her home, she grabbed her cat and ran out, only to realize that her other cat was still inside.

She was beside herself with grief.

So the fireman broke a window, ran inside, got the second cat – which was unconscious by the back door, paw marks on the screen as if it had tried in vain to get out, brought the cat outside, and put an oxygen mask on its face, then ran back to fight the fire. When he came back, the cat – to his surprise – was walking around.

These are not the cats in question, but rather a reader’s pets, Boogie and Smokey, who are standing in for the actual cats in this story, as I don’t have rights to the photo I link to.

A surprisingly interesting video, considering the subject matter.

There’s nothing normal about this household.

Between the cat and dog dressed up in shark costumes, plus the cat riding on the Roomba, and then there’s that duckling that’s either chasing, or being chased by, the cat/roomba.

I don’t know how they did it, but it all came together in one strange video. And the cat seems perfectly content on the Roomba, even when it’s running into walls. As the owner of two cats, and judging by the lack of presence of any human blood in the video, I smell valium.

Oh, and it’s apparently a Halloween video, so there’s some justification for the costumes. Still doesn’t explain cat riding the Roomba, or the presence of the duckling.

I laughed so hard watching this.

This video cracked me up. It’s about a guy, and his mom’s cockatoo, named Boo, that has spent ten years trying to kill him. This video is titled: “Boo, attempt 457.”

Mom apparently doesn’t quite believe it, even though Boo reportedly ate part of his brother’s ear a while back.

So the kid explains to mom that “it helps when you go away, she thinks she can get away with it.” Apparently the bird only acts up when mom can’t see.

So, in order to prove it, he has mom leave him alone in the room with the bird, who’s a good 20, 25 feet away.

“Can you go in that room and close the door?” he asks his mom.

Mom leaves. That’s when the fun begins. The bird immediately descends and begins its slow attack. The video starts slow, keep watching.

The guy’s dialogue with the bird, when he’s face to face and the thing is ready to maul him, cracked me up:

“I know what you want to do, you little son of a b*tch. You want to rip my face off, f*cking little dinosaur.”

And he’s not wrong. When it’s PO’d, the bird looks a lot like that nasty little dinosaur that ate Newman:

I love what the mom says when she finally comes back to save him:

Mom: “It’s a one pound bird.”

Kid: “Yeah, half that weight is jaw strength.”

For anyone who has a cat, laser pointers can be lots of fun.

Ours used to love chasing the lights when they were young, but now that they’re in retirement they do a lot less chasing of anything.

I know, you’d rather see a duckling NOT save twelve bankers jumping off a building.

A banker in Spokane, Washington saves 12 trapped ducklings. After watching that video of the bombing 1,000 times today, consider this your palate cleanser.

From ABC:

For the past 35 days, [Joel] Armstrong watched as a mother duck nested on a ledge outside his office window…two blocks from the Spokane River in Washington state. On Saturday morning, Armstrong arrived in town for the annual Lilac Festival parade. Seeing the newly hatched ducklings nervously pacing back and forth on the ledge, he knew they were stuck. Their mother stood waiting below, but the jump off the ledge was too far for the ducklings.

So the banker got down below, at 5:45am, and stood there for hours trying to coax the ducklings to jump – and they did, one by one into his arms. Absolutely precious.

Personally, I think he's ticked the cat jumped off the balcony.

A lot of heavy news today. It’s now almost 7pm, and time to let our hair down and enjoy a very angry beaver.

Between you and me, I think the beaver is ticked that the cat jumped off the balcony.

All kidding aside, it’s a short video, but it is fascinating to see the beaver go from la-di-da just waddling down the street, to full-bore attack mode. You can even see it’s fur standing up in the screen capture that I grabbed from the video:

I had no idea beavers could attack like this. I almost wonder if it didn’t have young nearby.

Experiments with zero-gravity in the 1960s show that cats have no sense of humor.

In an odd experiment, US Air Force scientists took cats into a weightless situation – flying high up in a steep arc to create zero gravity for 15 seconds – and tested whether cats would flip over when dropped, the way they do in normal gravity.

They didn’t.

I’m not entirely sure what the point was of this experiment. If there’s no gravity, you don’t drop, so the cat wouldn’t know to flip. Then again, perhaps they were trying to find whether it was the dropping, or the appearance of dropping (i.e., the cat seeing itself in mid-air, untethered) that provoked the cat to flip over.

Anyway, it was kind of a funny mess. The cats start at around 3:40 into the video.

Actually at around the 4:10 mark some pigeons that they tested too. The pigeons get a bit discombobulated trying to fly. That one is actually quite interesting.

Apparently some animal-lovers in the comments over at YouTube got very upset about the cat experiments, prompting one YouTuber to write in response (in jest):

Slightly inconveniencing those cats is literally worse than the holocaust.

Enjoy.

Australian nature buff Andrew Ucles runs into a bit of trouble when a wombat doesn't take kindly to his visit.

I’d posted a video the other day of an adorable wombat in Australia befriending an adorable Austrian in Australia.

Now I give you the other side of the wombat. The not so nice side.

Apparently, this Australian animal video guy, Andrew Ucles, was trying to explore a pipe looking for wombats. And he found one. It entered the pipe behind him, dug in, and then refused to move, trapping for a panicked 15 minutes. Once Andrew had learned his lesson, the wombat scurried off.
