Yesterday I was invited to attend the signing of Titan Company ltd of India with their Malaysian distributors, Marco Worldwide Sdn Bhd, a name familiar with those in the watch industry here. As for Titan, the brand from India, they have been around since 1984 and known for producing and selling affordable watches. While they have been in Malaysia for more than a decade, they have decided to work with Marco Worldwide moving forward.

As part of the ceremony, Titan had a showcase of their lineup of watches on display and also had models who paraded them who wore clothing from local designer brand Inisaya who is known for its modern interpretations of traditional batik wear. But for the watch collector in me, it is the specialty pieces that attracted me.

While they are known for watches at the affordable end of the scale and that is their main sales focus here in Malaysia, Titan actually produce some stunning pieces that horological enthusiasts would actually like. I also think that me my attending the event was fruitful as they brought over to a watch showcase their more serious watches, like their Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG) nominated watches as well as their open faced meteorite dialed in-house automatic watch called the Titan Stellar. Those who aren't aware, the GPHG is an annual event that celebrates and promotes the art of watchmaking.

The first of this which impressed me is the Titan Edge Ultra Slim (above), a GPHG nominee that features an ultra thin Titan made quartz movement. It deserves its entry to the GPHG as it features quite a unique single handed way of telling time (much like a certain Breguet, but quartz) and featuring a very slim as thin as a credit card, movement. While it may be quartz, it showcases that unique way of telling the time, its slimness and that such innovation isn't limited to the usual suspects. This is a limited edition, most likely a technology demonstrator to prove a point. But I would have loved to own a piece if it was available (hey, its quartz, super slim, single hand watch - convenient, what's not to like?)

The second one is their Edge Squircle (below), which means square and circle combined. This is another GPHG nominee and another limited edition, this one more on case material and its case shape. It is made out of ceramic zirconium and has Titan's in house quartz movement also. While chatting with the folks from Titan I did mention that it was similar to something that Rado would do with their Ceramica line and they just nodded in agreement. Well, from what I see, this is actually just as good to look at.

The third one I was impressed is their in-house automatic watch, the Stellar but with an actual meteorite dial (below). This shows off Titan's watchmaking skills in terms of having its own propietary movement and their dial making technology. The watch, another limited edition comes with a certificate of authenticity stating that the dial comes from an actual meteorite that fell somewhere in Scandinavia.

They also brought out their smart watches, their jewelry style dress watches for the ladies and their 18k gold pieces aside from their regular range and the pieces mentioned above. Quite impressive as these are sold over in their home country India where the brand's awareness level is high.

Titan are actually titans in watchmaking outside of the usual Swiss, Japanese, German brands we see and here. Aside from the models shown above and their prowess in making automatic and quartz movements in-house, they also can make high horology pieces, which unfortunately were not brought to the event. They have their limited edition flying tourbillion pieces, the latest being the Jalsa, a flying tourbillion watch with a hand painted dial.

I suppose this is what 40 years plus of watchmaking can get you. Titan may not be well known for their higher end pieces outside of its home, India, but with the showcase here, I can say that if they keep on with what they are doing, they can be as big as the other big names in the watch industry. Currently, one Titan watch is sold every two seconds globally. They hold 60% of their domestic market over in India and with these innovative products, as well as their jewellery and eyewear divisions, they should be able to grow even more.

With Marco Worldwide as their Malaysian distributors, they now have about 90 outlets carrying their products and we should see more of Titan here over the next few years.

Watches: The IWC Eternal Calendar - thoughts after viewing it at the recent IWC x Tatler GMT event at the IWC boutique in Pavillion KL

This is the IWC Eternal Calendar. It is a secular perpetual watch so complicated, in its mechanical complications, that even without a need of an electronic calculator can keep an accurate perpetual moonphase with 45,000,000 years accuracy and a calendar accurate until 3499ad. Simply outrageous and I have held such a contraption in my hands about a month or so ago at an IWC x Tatler GMT event at its boutique at the Pavillion Kuala Lumpur.

"Power reserve display; Secular perpetual calendar with displays for the date, day, month, and year in four digits; perpetual moon phase with 45,000,000 years accuracy for both Northern and Southern hemispheres; 400-year gear for the recognition of irregular leap years; small hacking seconds calendar accurate until 3499 (only because the Gregorian calendar has not been calculated further)" - taken from Hodinkee.

The watch itself is a little bit on the large size at 43mm in diameter and most importantly, very thick - over 15mm I believe, due to having to fit many things inside the case in order for it to tell time almost for all eternity. As befits its name.

It is impressive, but while the movement itself can keep the time and date until 3499, you must ensure that you do not let it power down. It has a seven day power reserve which is impressive, but if you miss a couple of days you can set it foward. And if you move a day or two forward you can let it stop, then wait for the day to arrive.

There is actually no way to for the owner to set each function individually as the IWC movement that it is based upon is without any extra pushes or buttons other than what is visible. A good example is the Blancpain perpetual calendar in their Villeret series. These buttons set near the bottom of each lug allows owner adjustments.

I believe that IWC should have given owners that option for what is such an impressive device.

Of course, you could send it back to IWC if you screw up, and get them to reset the watch after you've forgotten to do so after it sits in your watchbox or safe for years after its novelty has worn off and after you've done flexing it to your friends that you own the ETERNAL CALENDAR. But it most likely will cost you after that warranty period or the first time you screw up has happened and they give you a freebie for your mistake.

They should as it costs RM750,000 at least here in Malaysia.

But what a watch it is. Your future generations get to tell the time for eternity....except you need to factor in the usual recommended ten year service intervals that most mechanical watches have and the fact that you may need to change the Year wheel once every few hundred or thousand years as according to IWC, that swap is required.

Your future generations will either curse at the service costs or revel in its mechanical glory for a long long time and will be cherished over the centuries - better make sure your trust fund allows your great great great grand children to afford it. It is an engineering marvel nonetheless.

I have the idea that this Eternal Calendar is like the Antikythera. This mechanism is an ancient Greek artifact, often referred to as the first known analog computer, a calculator of sorts which was discovered in a shipwreck off the coast of Antikythera in 1901. This intricate bronze device was used to predict astronomical positions and eclipses. Somewhat like the Eternal Calendar and I imagine in a very distant future where records have been lost, archeologists may think we weren't advanced as we as today and thought that we did everything mechanically. Which we didn't.

It shows that we still put out feats of marvel out of things that are obsolete. We do not need mechanical watches as our quartz watches are more accurate over a period of time but we still tinker and innovate.

I am actually glad I had a chance to see one and am also glad that IWC made one despite its shortcomings.

Eternally impressive in my books.

Supercars: Lamborghini Temerario debuts in Malaysia

Lamborghini Kuala Lumpur has launched the Temerario in Malaysia. Priced from RM1.35Million before any taxes or insurance, the HPEV (High Performance Electrified Vehicle), redefines the performance, driving pleasure and comfort and is the latest compact supercar/hypercar of the Raging Bull.

The new Lamborghini replaces the outgoing smallest supercar in its lineup - the Huracan. As the latest addition to Lamborghini’s hybridized product lineup, the Temerario completes the brand’s full hybridization. It is the second model in Lamborghini’s High Performance Electrified Vehicle (HPEV) range, following the Revuelto, which was introduced in 2023, and comes after the introduction of the Urus SE, the brand’s first plug-in hybrid Super SUV.

The Temerario sets a new benchmark in the super sports car segment with its class-beating performance. At its heart is a new twin-turbo V8 hybrid engine — a masterpiece of Italian engineering designed and developed from scratch in Sant’Agata Bolognese. This engine gets assisted by three electric motors, delivering an extraordinary combined output of 920 CV and uniquely capable of revving up to 10,000 rpm. The Temerario accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.7 seconds and reaches a top speed of 343 km/h.

So while it is now a V8 over a V10 like the Huracan previously, it is actually a better car in many ways, and the V8 sounds sweet with a hint of rumble over the smoother sounding V10s.

The Temerario features a new aluminum chassis that increases torsional rigidity while optimizing driving dynamics and passenger comfort. The refined cabin also offers increased roominess and luggage capacity, setting a new benchmark in the segment.

Lamborghini also achieved new heights with aerodynamics engineered for maximum efficiency and stylistic purity while still looking like what we expect a Lamborghini to look like.

It also debuts the Lamborghini Vision Unit, the most advanced multimedia experience, which provides immersive access to features that enhance driving engagement and allow seamless capture and sharing of their track and road experiences.

The new car, touring the region in its left hand drive form, was unveiled to the media and guests in matt, Blu Marinus exterior, Lamborghini Temerario sets the stage in for the unforgettable evening in Kuala Lumpur. Guests had the opportunity alongside to be introduced to the other two plug-in hybrid versions: the V12 HPEV (High-Performance Electrified Vehicle), Revuelto as well as the first plug-in hybrid Super SUV, Urus SE. I usually do not cover fashion, but I do like to promote topics that help local industries that do include menswear (even though I am more of a traditional menswear enthusiast and not into couture).

Aman Central has been organising the Kedah Fashion Week for a good 10 years. This10th anniversary of what they have called the Kedah Fashion Week 2025 began as an ambitious vision has now reshaped the heart of Alor Setar and something the folks up north can look forward to, if they are into fashion and whatever that surrounds it (It does pretty quiet up there you know).

Over the past decade, Aman Central has sparked an urban renaissance. It has drawn international brands, nurtured homegrown entrepreneurs, inspired the rise of boutique hotels and new businesses, and helped redefine Alor Setar as a vibrant modern city. Through every fashion show, festive celebration, arti nstallation and community initiative, Aman Central has become a landmark that belongs to its people. It is a space where the spirit of Kedah is expressed with pride and where new stories continue to unfold. Personally, if you let the current state government do things, nothing much will happen. Take a good example of how Langkawi has been in the last decade compared to the early 2000s, you will understand.

Acetate Tortoise Shell comb by Officine Universalle Buly - A short review and a video too

This comb is a Swiss made comb sold by Parisian brand Officine Universalle Buly, a brand that started off as a perfumery in the 1900s, disappeared and then was resurrected in the late 1990s and now owned by the LVMH group today. They usually sell perfumes, lip balm, brushes and combs. I think their Swiss made combs are the best I've used even beating the Kent Combs comb that I have been using for years.

The Officine Universalle Buly comb is made out of acetate and mimics tortoise shell. A pattern that is absolutely gorgeous and somehow suits combs and most importantly, the frame of eyeglasses. You see many the most well known is the Wayfarer by Ray-Ban.

These are hand finished - they like to say hand made, but I think pouring acetate into a mould doesnt really count but the teeth are hand polished and rounded individually. The Buly comb has even better rounded teeth than the UK made Kent Combs. This is the best comb in the world. I somehow think that these could be made by Spert of Switzerland, but they only seem to have the tortoiseshell pattern like the Kent one above. Not like the Buly.

The comb isn't something you think of paying 50Euros for, but as an affordable luxury, well worth it. And your scalp will actually thank you for using it. it is the experience you get when you buy it at the boutique (I was in Milan for mine).

It is an experience to be remembered. Note that luxury often comes with the experience and here, you get a calligrapher writing your name out on the wrapping paper for the comb or brush, or lip balm case which you can also get initialed.

At the Breitling x Tatler GMT 2025 collections showcase

I was invited to the Breitling boutique at the TRX Mall last week to view the latest novelties and collections of the watch brand. It is usually a the the weeks and months after the yearly Watches and Wonders that most watch brands or their dealers hold their individual previews to their customers and guests. So Breitling has collaborated with Tatler Malaysia, via their watch arm, Tatler GMT to hold a preview for Tatler and Breitling guests.

This year, the newly revised Breitling Superocean Heritage range was the main attraction. You can get exact details of what changed from other websites but I can say that the most notable improvement are the mid sized 40mm cased ones. They feature a redesigned dial and hands but I like that these are now only 12mm thick. Still with a non screw in crown but with 100meters water resistance like before and because of that, afds a typical touch of Breitling quirkiness to it.

The SO Heritage takes after vintage Breitling and seems to be the better S.O to get vs. the regular one pictured above. This takes the 1950s vibe while the regular S.O feels 1970s. And that super large rehaut in contrasting style to the bezel and dial make something that doesn't fall into my rigid criteria of a dive watch I'd want to buy. So the Heritage version is nicer to me.

I think Breitling's current marketing philosophy is to push a watch to different, more individual type of person. One that follows a slightly different path to success rather than just being that regular millionaire or movie star. More the adventurer but with that slight raw twist. Instead of riding a Harley Davidson they'll ride a Triumph. Maybe one with that rock star attitude or while having some raw energy even while looking elegant. Slightly off the beaten path, but still successful.

I think their current marketing is different from the other luxury watch brands and I do think with a bit more tweaks to their products, their profile will be better especially with collectors in this region which tend to be a tad bit conservative in their purchases.

The Shirt Bar Unveils Its Flagship Boutique at Iconic Fashion Destination Suria KLCC

Of course, this isn't Loro Piana, Polo Ralph Lauren or Brooks Brothers, it is Singapore brand The Shirt Bar, and they have spread their wings into KLCC - not Malaysia as they already have a presence inside Seibu, TRX Mall. Anyway, in conjunction with their opening at Suria KLCC, The Shirt Bar launches limited-edition, customisable, sustainable caps and oversized t-shirts, available exclusively at, where else, Suria KLCC - Lot 208, Level 2, Suria KLCC,

The boutique’s standout feature is its hidden fitting rooms, which add a playful twist, inviting guests to discover secret entrances. Of course, if you 're in a rush, their staff will point you to them I assume, and in conjunction of the opening, The Shirt Bar is launching a limited-edition personalised collection featuring sustainable caps, crafted from recycled plastic bottles, and oversized T-shirts made from ultra- soft organic and premium Pima (supima) cotton. Available exclusively at Suria KLCC, these pieces can be customised with The Shirt Bar’s Snap Patch - a range of velcro patches featuring initials, affirmations, and minimalist emblems - to create a unique fashion statement.

Now the garments from The Shirt Bar seem to be what I would consider to be as beginner level menswear - Maybe on the same level as if you bought from Debenhams (R,I.P) or MetroJaya or from the base Marks and Spencers menswear stuff.. From their website, you do see supima cotton tee-shirts, but the majority is cotton spandex (cotton with syntethic stretch poly) tencel, a cellulose based material like rayon and viscose with an emphasis on sustainability - which is good. So you get the usual mix between sportier modern materials and some natural based ones. The same goes to their jackets and trousers so choose properly as I personally prefer natural fibres over man made these days .

These are made to be sold to the mass market. But I do like the fact that they sell other menswear accessories like pocket squares, tie pins, ties, collar stays and other haberdashery items in one spot. Most likely at a reasonable price compared to some luxury brands out there. So if you want a starter kit, things cannot be so bad - unless you do not alter their jacket sleeves, and trousers and they look like you've borrowed them from someone taller than you.

In fact, this reminds me of the local brand called Cuffz, which usually did dress shirts to complement their accessories, namely cufflinks and pins. Of course, I think since the pandemic, they've scaled down so much till their presence is now limited.

So there you go, another menwear focused store has opened up in Kuala Lumpur. If you're just starting off in life, this could be a good place to get work clothes or that supima tee-shirt (which I suggest over all the tencel, cotton stretch stuff they also sell.

It has been over a year since I last posted anything in here. I suppose I should as my journey through life has been quite satisfying of late. Maybe that is the reason for lack of posts. In terms of living life, I have been doing just that and it has showed from the lack of posts.

Add the fact that in this day and age, we tend to document things via video rather than mere words. I feel like I belong from that earlier era and it is actually quite tedious for me to keep on blogging. Of course, in terms of menswear in the tropics, I also seem to feel that I have covered what I wanted to cover and there has been not much to say.

I also have friends that say you can expand the scope of things and cover other things. I have my motoring/automotive related blog - motoring-malaysia, and that alone occupies my car related things and it also takes up a lot of my time from news pieces to video reviews over there. That fact makes me a little tired to do that over here on a regular basis too.

However, I should, as there are so many things I should share with you folks out there. And maybe I shall start again. There should be more on menswear and maybe some on luxury goods, travel (the photos here were all taken from my recent trip to Italy) and maybe a little on food. I have not decided as yet the direction I will be taking.

I will let you folks know or if you see more stuff, you know that there is at least some direction taken.

My Blucher Mocs get new Vibram soles

The pair of Blucher mocs that I bought in 2017 have had their soles replaced recently. The soles basically wore out sometime in 2022 and I've stored the shoes so that I can get them repaired at a later date. And that later date was a few weeks ago.

Yes I've been procrastinating but these days, I usually do. The shoes are by a brand called Airflex and the commando soles have worn out. Not only that, the insole where the feet sits on has also died, or disintegrated.

The cobbler, which is the one based in The Atria in Damansara Jaya did a decent job fixing them. New Woly moulded insole, a new Vibram commando sole and new leather laces made the Blucher mocs whole again. I think the Vibram soles make the shoe look better than the original soles.

The reason why I decided to get them fixed is because they were very comfortable and the leather uppers were in pretty good condition. No cracks or tears just some patina in them. And you know I like patina. It brings out the character in the leather.

Anyway, now it just needs some shoe cream and it will go into my casual shoe rotation again. Super chuffed about this as I'm going to get many years more from this pair.

Repair costs totaled around MYR150 to 200.00. I don't really remember as this was a job with the wife's shoes too. But a new Blucher moc of this type could be around MYR600.00 these days. I bought these pair during my last trip to Perth, AU (November 2017) and they do have some memories attached to them. Not bad actually, 5 hard years of use and I now get even more out of them.

IT HAS been awhile. I suppose this is due to the fact that the pandamic lockdowns has made me reflect more about life and I started chilling out more instead of writing.

Anyway, I am still around but writing has slowed down. But if you have been following my Instagram or following the Motoring Malaysia blog, you would know that I am still active and doing fine over here in Malaysia.

I have to also state again and again because some of the people who stumble on my blog think that I make shoes for a living or that I sell clothing. i do not. I write stuff I buy or think deserves to be shared. It is as simple as that. i do not sell anything featured in this blog as it is about how to live and enjoy here in and around the equator, or the tropics.

When you do not read properly, I get stupid inquiries. AGAIN, I don't make any stuff. I just review them.

Anyway, this short post is to say I am still around and I may get back to blogging about menswear on a regular basis again.....or try to.

Oh yeah, the photos are from my recent trip to Singapore and the shoes are by Indonesian shoemaker Mario Minardi. They have a display at Takashimaya in Ngee Ann City and they also offer customisation of their shoes over there. Interesting, as we do not get that service over at their display in Isetan The Gardens or at Isetan KLCC.

I suppose beggars can't be choosers. At least there is a choice for buying decent grade shoes still in KL aside from going to the luxury brands here. I heard PLAL is also a bit slow in terms of shoes (since the pandemic). I haven't checked it out yet so don't take my word for it.

Watch Sales / Production for 2020

Here is the global watch sales and profit numbers or production for 2020 (forgot the source but from a watch website). Anyway, just a thought on Rolex and Longines it sold the most watches in 2020.

We used to think that their watches, even their basic Datejust or Oyster Perpetual models, were rare items making them hold their value.

But actually Rolex is like gold. A commodity rather than something super rare. It isn't as every year Rolex sells more watches than any other brand out there.

Its more in the demand and, like diamonds (which isn't as rare as we think -it is actually more of great marketing than anything) , everyone buys it as status symbol (which is usually something of value). So, Rolex basically is a case of popularity and supply vs demand, and 800,000 watches a year is not sufficient.

Of course you have the Submariner, Daytona, GMTmaster and other sports models that are the actual popular ones, but because everyone wants one, even the "lowly" Oyster is grabbed up.

I can't complain because I am lucky enough to own one. Here is my 2005 14060m no-date Sub pictured beside my friend's newly acquired Omega Speedmaster Professional.

Anyway, as for Longines, I was actually surprised that globally the brand sells a lot of watches. Here in Malaysia, the brand seems to fly under the radar and even a friend and I said that the brand isn't as popular as even Tissot or Tag Heuer.

It isn't the case from the numbers. I also forgot the fact that I remember reading a while ago that Longines sells in India and also China. So from there alone we know where the numbers come from.

On the same note, I wouldn't mind having their Heritage diver.

.... But its still way down on the wishlist of watches I want.

Unboxing my New Montecristi Panama Hat

Above is an unboxing video of my most recent acquisition - a Montecristi Panama Hat from PanamaHatsDirect.com. This is a sub-fino grade according to Panama Hats Direct and it was shipped over from Ecuador direct via DHL (cost quite a bit but secure and actually quite fast). This is my first proper Panama hat and it would go in my rotation of hats.

This isn't a review, but just the unboxing and some facts about panama hats in general, like what is a Cuenca over a Montecristi.

I will do a review of it one of these days. But in the meanwhile, do watch this video if you want to.

Today's Watch - Swatch Scuba Libre and Thoughts About the Pandemic and Beater Watches

It has actually been a while since I wrote something in here. The reason is that I have not been in the mood to talk about what I've been doing or what I have tried out recently. Most likely because I feel that I have already said what needs to be said and there are not much else to say. And in terms of reviewing stuff I've bought, I have so much stuff that are merely repeats...like more watches or shoes or shirts...etc. Sometimes, you don't have the mood to write about another watch, shoes etc. It does get to you.

But since we've been on a coronavirus lockdown and just emerging out of it, I think that I should start writing abit. Not much, as I don't know whether i will be in the mood or not but today I am writing about the Swatch Scuba Libre which you see me wearing in the photos.

I bought this quite cheap at under RM190 or so at the Genting Premium Outlet a couple of years ago. It is Swatch's idea of a 'divers'.watch. It has a unidirectional rotating 60 minute large rotating bezel like most divers watches, it has a legible clean looking dial with clear 12, 9, 6 numerals with a date wheel at the 3 o'clock marker, and it looks chunky with it being quite tall and around 42mm diameter or thereabouts.

But it has flaws if you want to consider it as a proper divers watch. Its crown isn't a screw in type even though its rated to 20 bar or 200metres and the lume absolutely sucks. More like nothing when its dark. It is so slight that it may ne nonexistent. Lucky the hands and dial design makes it legible enough at dusk.

But because of this, it fails as a diver. However as a beater watch, it works perfectly as you can just trash the heck out of it.

Like any basic Swatch except the Irony series it is fully plastic with exception of the quartz movement and battery cover. The crystal is a plastic one too and like all Swatches, you cannot access the movement unless you cut or break it open.

This main drawback of a Swatch is that of it breaks, you have to throw in it away. As a disposable under Rm200 watch, it would do fine. Do rough stuff with it. Go on trips overseas and it won't hurt the wallet if it gets trashed or lost. It's affordable....To some people that is.

I like the Scuba Libre in that it looks like it took design cues from some trad 1950s diver watch in terms of dial and beEp design with deliberate funkier font sizes and bezel. And everything is plastic of course.

It looks like what a Blancpain Fifty Fathoms would look like if it were plastic....if there was such a thing. With its slightly curved bezel and all. Surprisingly, I think that this line isn't too popular as I can't seem to find many people wearing them or Swatch stores keeping them in stock.

I think if I threw in a tan leather strap it would look its part. The only issie is that the Swatch only lug design requires a Swatch style strap. Since it's a beater watch, I am not too bothered to pimp it up. Yet.

One reason is that since the pandemic lockdown period, this watch is the only one seeing a lot of wrist time when I go out. Since its all plastic it does not get affected with all the lathering of alcohol based hand sanitizers which eventually could do damage to my leather and NATO nylon strap which are usually affixed to my watches.

As alcohol is corrosive, a beater watch is quite convinient to wear in times like these. So the Scuba Libre gets used often.

Since there are less events or functions for me to attend, I usually go about in a polo t-shirt and cotton khakis. So not much dressing to really do and I do not go out much except to the grocers or for some other essential stuff. So this watch will suffice for now.

I however must say that while this is quite good as it has an analogue dial, a Casio Dw5600 Series G-shock with all of its digital could be a better buy and a better beater watch. It is the only G-shock which I like. It was the one used by Keanu Reeves in Speed and while as disposable as this, its case, or bezel can be replaced of it is cracked. Actually you can access the quartz movement too....which is always a plus point as you could get the movement replaced if it stops working.

I have one. But my daughter has taken a liking to it and wears it quite a bit. Must go get another.

Video: The Land Rover Above and Beyond Drive Experience - Testing the Land Rover Discovery Sport and Range Rover Velar

Hello again folks. I have been busy elsewhere. You guys know that I have a motoring website don't you? Motoring-Malaysia is where I do most of my writing these days and also a lot of videography. Maybe one of these days I will actually blog or write about how I have been producing my videos. It has been a one man operation to date and I usually record and edit everything on my own. Which is why I have been busy with this one featuring the Land Rover Above and Beyond Drive Experience with the 2019 Land Rover Discovery Sport and the 2019 Range Rover Velar.

The Above and Beyond Tour is somewhat of a Land Rover global exercise where customers and invited guests as well as enthusiasts get to try out the Land Rover vehicles through an off-road obstacle course and it will also show you how a Land Rover actually performs.

In case any of you were wondering prior to watching the video, the Land Rover Discovery Sport and the Range Rover Velar are very, very good off-road for what you can consider as luxury vehicles. Even though the SUVs I tried had road tyres or their factory fitted tyres, they still performed well in terms of basic, slightly muddy conditions. The trails that were used could be like someone's dirt path on some of their orchards or here in Malaysia, their 'dusun'.

When you have a Land Rover, or even the more luxurious Range Rover, take it off-road once or twice a year. You will get your money's worth, especially in the over half a million Ringgit Velar. That vehicle may cost a good RM150K at least over the RM370K (fully imported, crazy taxes) Discovery Sport, but after driving it, and experiencing its added refinement, you know that Land Rover put in more into the compact luxury SUV. Compact because it technically is so as the Range Rover Sport and even larger and stately Range Rover sits above it.

But that being said, the Velar is very much the luxury vehicle it has set out to be. There is an understated elegance to the exterior styling that captures your attention. The interior is very modern, without any sense of an English country manor at all. It is modern inside and outside. It is also something which I would suggest those who can afford one to go and try out.

It isn't a German luxury SUV. It isn't a Swedish SUV. But it is premium and makes you feel good when you're sitting inside one. Watch the video folks! It is featured on Land Rover Asia Pacific's YouTube Channel.

Video Review: An Impromptu Review of Fortuna Shoes' Tasseled Loafers aka Jalan Sriwijaya Shoes

I actually shot this video at a Starbucks in Ara Damansara, Petaling Jaya. My friend, Azidi just got back from Bandung, Indonesia and he bought this pair of tasseled loafers from Fortuna Shoes there. If you guys have been following shoe forums here and there, you may have heard of them. PT Fortuna could be one of the best shoes ever produced by Indonesia in terms of quality and overseas exports.

Unfortunately, my friend decided to only bring one side. So this review is just on that one side. It still shows you the basic shoe. You can see the quality of the suede used, how the stacked leather heel looks and the insole too from the video. I must say that the shoe is quite impressive for something that cost 2.6million Rupiah. Or around RM800 after conversion.

It seems to have the same standards as a pair of Loake 1880s. Or very slightly beneath it. But I think the insole seems to have more cushion than the pair of 1880s I own. So it could be more comfortable. The shape of the uppers is also quite unique. And yes, this is actually a whole cut loafer. Fortuna shoes have the talent and skill in doing so.

My friend was torn between this and another, over 3million Rupiah pair of patina-ed wholecuts. The issue was that he mostly does not need to dress formally for work and the pair of loafers would make more sense. He also has a pair of wholecuts he has not worn yet so another pair, in red or mahogany could also be what held him back ultimately. But he knows that Fortuna Shoes is just a short flight away.

I must say that the shoes by Fortuna, aka Jalan Sriwijaya if sold in Isetan Tokyo are great value for money. They offer a lot of shoe for the price and if you do live in Southeast Asia or even Asia, heading down to Bandung makes a lot of sense. Although Ho Chi Minh offers a whole lot more in terms of shoes. So the competition is stiff.

The Pair of Ferragamo Shoes That Had Disintegrated Soles Have Been Repaired

I am back for a short article folks! I have been busy with my Motoring Malaysia blog and its YouTube channel. We have been testing lots of cars over there and if you like cars, trucks and buses you should head over there. But here is a follow up post on the pair of Ferragamo shoes that basically died due to its rubber sole deteriorating. I've got them fixed.

You can see from the pics above the shoe is repaired. It was done by the cobbler over at the Atria in Petaling Jaya. At the LG carpark level escalator near the Village Grocer side. You can see that they've changed the rubber sole to a leather sole and stacked heel. They cobbler basically got the sole stitched to the uppers and now, from a stuck on constructed shoe (glued) to a blake stitched one with a leather sole.

So the shoe has basically become slightly better in some ways. You can actually get the sole stitched to the upper most of the time provided the cobbler has proper machinery. Here in Malaysia, I've mentioned previously that the cobblers here do not have Goodyear Welting machines. Nearest could be Singapore for most of us and I've also heard of a cobbler over in Kuching, Sarawak that has such a machine. Quite tough for most, which is why I've said that I prefer blake stitched shoes here.

But these days, as I have built up a sizeable collection of shoes, I think it actually takes years for me to wear out any of them. Even if I did wear them out I will get a Topy piece of rubber half sole when they're half worn and they will then last years. So when I get a pair half soled with the half sole, I just replace the half sole later. But at this moment, due to rotating my shoes, I haven't resoled any pairs in the past two years or more (I think) with the exception of this pair you see here.

You can see my ruined shoe is now perfectly wearable. Wore them today to an event and it was comfortable. I wore them without socks and I suffered no blisters or any sort of issues. It was comfortable. It may be slightly crude looking in terms of total finishing due to the lack of more expensive soles on stock (these days not many ask for a full leather sole according to the cobbler so less people keep stock) but from afar, I think they're more than adequate. And I get another pair of shoes to add back to my rotation.

Oh, I nearly forgot. They cost me RM350 to get these pair done. I think its worth it. Of course, I have to state again that sometimes, it could be better to just buy shoes with leather soles as they will never disintegrate over time. First Video Review - A Comparison Between Santoni and Magnanni

I have been neglecting this blog a little. Well, maybe not a little but a whole lot. So let me make it up to you folks who occasionally pop by to see what's new with the blog and what have I been up to aside from doing lots of automotive related things. Some of you may notice that I have been extremely active over at my motoring page - motoring-malaysia.blogspot.com. Anyway, I have made this video review, my first ever shoe review - A Comparison between a pair of Santoni and Magnanni double monk strap shoes.

I think it is quite a decent comparison. One has been well worn, and one is very new. Just fresh out of the box. Both are double monk strap shoes and it has been said that Magnanni emulates Santoni in many ways. You can see it in the video and what I think about both of these shoes.

Personally, both are interesting. One is actually on a higher level. Not in the sense of just its price, but its overall execution. The patina, and finishing touches are just different and raise the bar from the other.

So the question now to you folks out there is, should I keep doing stuff like this now? If you have seen the video, do tell me what would you like me to review. If I have the time, it could be done you know. Or I could explain to you guys more about it.

First post of 2019 - My rubber sole Ferragamo died...Why I would prefer you buy Stitched together or welted Shoes

This is my first post of 2019 here and let's start on something with something that this blog is well known for...Shoes. This time, let me remind you why glued shoes or stuck on construction shoes aren't really worth your time and / or money.... especially if you don't have much of either.

This is another of my Salvatore Ferragamo shoes. This isn't one of those higher up Lavorazione Originale or Tramezza series but one of the entry level ones with the rubber, glued on soles. They are nice and flexible when worn but as you can see, after five years of occasional wear, the rubber has perished on one of the shoes. The other side seems to be going strong.

Anyway, this is down to the fact that the sole on this Ferragamo is most likely a rubber blend and stuck to the upper with adhesive. So after a while, the rubber/poly mix dries out and cracked. On one side only. Which makes no difference since I have two feet and need both sides to wear it.

I've removed most of the sole and you now can see that I essentially paid a lot of money for not much shoe. Well, I actually didn't pay much for the shoe as I bought it at the Ferragamo factory outlet store at the Johor Premium Outlet for about RM750 or so five or so years ago.

Well, RM750 could have gotten me a nice pair of Indonesian made blake stitched Mario Minrdi shoes with som hand patina or a nice pair of Fugashin Saigon blake stiched shoes for the same amount of money but I decided to get the somewhat flashy pair anyway. Why you may ask? I just liked the apron toe and horsebit buckle design as well as the tan colour of the shoe.

Then again, I also knew for a fact that as with my other pair of Ferragamo penny loafers which I have blogged about in here I could get these pair repaired once the sole dies on me. So...after so many years, it has obviously done so and it will eventually be sent to the cobbler to get a resole.

It isn't that hard to turn it into a blake stitched shoe after this. As you can see the leather upper has more than enough leather pulled around the insole, so there is enough leather to attach a leather sole to it and get the whole thing stitched together. This is like the other pair of Ferragamo I had written about. To me it is nothing to shout or be sad about as I am aware or what comes next.

Of course, I have many, many pairs of shoes. The repairs can actually wait. I do not need to get it done straight away and will be saving some of my Ringgit for now. This story would be all different if this were my only pair of shoes of course.

So eventually, when they get repaired, it will be a nice leather sole with a blake stitched sole. Better than before and good for another five years or more. I know many will usually throw away their shoes but I always advocate buying stuff that last years or decades.

So don't do what I did here if you do not intend to spend RM300 or so on getting a glued shoe fixed. I knew what I was getting myself into when I bought this pair. I only bought it because I thought it was a reasonably priced shoe which can be fixed later on.

Of course, I am sometimes not a reasonable man you know. So don't follow what I did here. Only do so if you have the means of saving such a shoe and are willing to get it fixed for a certain price. At least this pair will still be servicible.

The most sensible advice I can give here is if you have a choice, buy a shoe with better construction. Or own many pair until you just don't care. Or you have the time to send shoes for repair.

What is the Best Warm Weather Fabric for a Jacket - It could be Hopsack in a Linen-Cotton Blend

After years of trying out different types of jackets in different types of fabric I am of the opinion that if you want to wear a sports jacket or a suit here in humid, warm, hot, you name it, everything uncomfortable in a jacket situation Malaysia it has to be unlined. Even the sleeves if possible or a very, very thin piece of lining - thinner than the usual Bemberg lining offerings.

As for the fabric itself. I now think that the best fabric which allows for some air to circulate around you is the one in a hopsack weave or pattern. This is a large open weave which is like a gunny sack (the ones you put potatoes in). What this does is allow the air to circulate through it and if made from a fabric like cotton, wool or linen (which is the best), it would make wearing a sports jacket or a suit jacket wearable in temperatures over 30degrees celcius for short lengths of time.

This is like stepping out from your car to the lobby or hanging out with some friends who still like a puff or two outside the comforts of air-conditioning.

When you pair it with a very light cotton dress shirt (cotton voile comes to mind), it actually feels as good as the chap wearing just a dress shirt in a thicker material.

I mean, check out how hopsack looks when facing bright light but when you wear it, it looks normal. You can't beat hopsack for being airy. Furthermore, with its heavier texture, it actually drapes better as the weight from the fabric allows the jacket to hang nicely (if it fits you well in the first place). And when you wear it, it isn't transparent.

I will eventually type out something more on a total warm weather look. But these days, I am so, so busy with other activities.

The blazer/sports jacket is a Massimo Dutti by the way. Two button, double vented, self lined, super thin sleeve lining, working buttonholes in a cotton-linen blend. Because of its lightweight unstructured design with the warm weather fabric of choice, it could be the sports jacket I love wearing the most.

Faux Tweed Jacket - For that Quintessential English look When Up in the Highlands While on a Drive in Some Newly Facelifted Mercedes-Benz C-Class Sedans

Yes. No postings for a while. But I have been busy you see. Here you see yours truly in the company of some distinguished gentlemen in many ways, not including of how they are attired. We were in the Cameron Highlands Resort the night after the Mercedes-Benz C-Class Rally held for the members of the automotive media in conjunction with the Malaysian launch of the newly facelifted W205 Mercedes-Benz C-Class here.

I am seen seated here with Mr Mark Raine, Vice President, Sales & Marketing, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia (left) and Zachary Ho, of Autoworld.com.my (right). Both are great people to carry on a conversation with and Mark is also a snappy dresser too. Being a non-formal motoring event, he is actually one of the better dressed ones as most automotive journalists usually dress like how Zachary dresses. Even in Cameron Highlands.

I am seen wearing something which I usually never wear in Kuala Lumpur. This is a faux tweed herringbone patterned cotton linen sport jacket by Polo Ralph Lauren. It is unlined at the back with the sleeves lined in some viscose and the front is lined in cotton. It is single vented at the rear and it still feels warm when I use it here in the highlands. The button-down shirt is by Brooks Brothers and I had a plain white linen pocket square to round things off by the way....

The temperature was between 16 to 18 degrees supposedly at the Cameron Highlands Resort where we stayed, but it felt like 22-25deg or something like that. So whilst I wouldn't recommend cotton-linen for winter, this should be suitable for spring, autumn and maybe as one of the layers during colder months. Faux tweed it may be, but it still feels warm to me.

Of course...if you compare with most of the people on the trip...I am a little (over) dressed you can see here. Loved the decor of the hotel though....

I do hope that people would stop major land clearing in Cameron. Three decades ago, you would have condensation coming out from your mouth when you breathe through it. Not anymore. Maybe in really colder months but usually this does not happen anymore.

As for the Mercedes-Benz C-Class? The facelift has made this premium compact sedan the best in its class according to Yours Truly. Why? It is more refined in the base C200 Avantgarde variant, handles a tad bit better too and is more fuel friendly. The cabin in truly quiet and it rides well. Better than the earlier C200 AMG line sold here.

The Mercedes-Benz C300 AMG Line (the one seen above here beside from C43 AMG variants) on the other had was massively quick, yet supremely supply over crests and bumps. So much faster through everywhere compared to the C200. It rides sportily but it isn't sportscar firm. It has air suspension which gives you the best of both worlds. The handling down a highland road is superb. You actually get comfort, refinement and you also get ride & handling to boot! No other car is as complete as this in its low RM300K price range. Even its other German competitors lack its luxurious interior feel. It is about perceived luxury and once you step inside it no other car comes close in terms of what you are paying.

Handling? Almost as close (ridiculously close) to the best in this class for the C300 (The C200 is just most refined, but does not drive like a driver's car) but that exterior, interior (the best use of higher end materials so that the cabin is tactile to touch, the opulent looking design and the high equipment levels) and the badge makes it the overall premium compact sedan to have. It's so good that I actually yearn for it. My bank account still won't let me have one for now of course!

So there you have it folks. What I wore in Cameron Highlands recently.

MINI Malaysia will be presenting a new Capsule Collection headlined as the MINI FASHION FIELD NOTES at the Kuala Lumpur Fashion Week 2018 (KLFW 2018). This is the first time ever MINI Malaysia is doing so and this is a somewhat of a continuation of sorts for their recent feature at the Pitto Uomo 94 men's fashion and lifestyle fair held recently (pic below).

The collection is a unique collaboration between MINI and The Woolmark Company. Woolmark is one of the world’s most recognised and respected brands in textile and fashion - a sign of quality wool, and sometimes more than just that.

The theme of the exhibition is called "Transcending Borders”. The up-and- coming designers drew on their individual travel experiences in diverse cities around the world, translating personal memories into fashion pieces using the finest Merino wool.

Ready to Wear - Because MTM & Bespoke Are Usually Not Necessary

This is a photograph of Yours Truly taken months ago. Basically nothing from here is Made to Measure (MTM) or Bespoke. The button down cotton shirt is by Brooks Brothers (non-iron, made in Malaysia stuff - I wear it because it helps the local factories, because I don't have any problems wearing non-iron and it does make my life easier), the flax-linen sports jacket by Massimo Dutti and the trousers, by Marks & Spencer (Collezione line with some Italian cotton fabric and surprisingly high waisted by today's standards). Oh, the pocket square is some Italian branded cotton one which I forgot the make.

So yes, I love the fit and finish here. Nothing is tight fitting and it is supremely comfortable to wear in this in the hot and humid Malaysian weather. Wearing nicely fitting clothing with some give always allows air to circulate and makes it easier to stretch without worrying whether the seams will burst out (especially since I am a little on the large side). The cotton, linen mix here also keeps things extremely cool.

The double vented, two button jacket is of course, a hopsack type of linen-flax fabric, unlined with only the sleeves having lining. Slightly padded at the shoulders but its all softly tailored. This is one of my favourite pieces actually.

The shoes are by Fratelli Rossetti. Another brand which I actually fancy and underrated in my opinion. The belt, I think is something old. Fifteen years at least.

So yes, head to toe in ready to wear with nothing specially commissioned for me. Of course, the shirt sleeves, jacket sleeves and trouser leg has been altered to fit. The trousers were bought longer so I cuffed them with a very slightly break - did it myself. It does make the trousers hang better.

It is all about the fit actually. And time to spend at the alterations tailor.

So here is something about my favourite ballpoint pen - the Parker Jotter
