Call for Participants in Nurses' Health Study

The Nurses' Health Studies are among the largest and longest running investigations of factors that influence women's health. Started in 1976 and still running, the information provided by the thousands of dedicated nurse participants has led to many new insights on health and disease. The studies have produced landmark data on cancer prevention, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and the effects of such lifestyle factors as diet and physical activity. However, there is still a great deal that is not known, especially regarding women from diverse ethnic backgrounds. The goal of the newest study, the Nurses' Health Study III, is to learn more about how women's lifestyles (including diet, exercise, birth control, pregnancy, work exposures, etc.) during their 20s, 30s, and 40s can influence health throughout life. Investigators at the Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women�s Hospital, are asking female nurses between the ages of 22 and 45 to join this study. Click here for more information.

ANNA�s Pediatric Special Interest Group (SIG) has developed a comprehensive interdisciplinary patient assessment tool designed for use with pediatric patients. According to the Conditions for Coverage for End-Stage Renal Disease Facilities issued by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), facilities must complete a comprehensive interdisciplinary patient assessment on all new patients. Nursing Community Urges Congress to Include Specific Provisions in Health Reform Bill

ANNA joined other members of the nursing community in commending the work of the House of Representatives and Senate to reform America�s health care system. This legislative effort represents a movement towards comprehensive and meaningful change that will improve access to quality care. ANNA joined these nursing organizations in sending a letter to Congressional leaders outlining the requests of the nursing community as the House and Senate negotiate the differences between the House�s Affordable Health Care for America Act of 2009 (H.R. 3962) and the Senate�s Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (H.R. 3590). ANNA has released another module in a series developed by the Association to support the learning needs of nurses who care for nephrology patients in alternative settings. The series, entitled Partnering for Quality Care, A Continuing Education Program for Chronic Kidney Disease Clinicians, is designed to address the nursing care needs of chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients in settings outside of nephrology or dialysis. The latest module, entitled Stage 5 CKD - Pediatrics: Children Have Kidney Failure Too, identifies differences in the care of the adult versus child with CKD stage 5, including growth and development, nutrition, peer interactions, and rehabilitation/school. ANNA and NKF Develop Patient Assessment Tool to Assist ESRD Facilities in Complying with Conditions for Coverage

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released the new Conditions for Coverage (CfCs) for End-Stage Renal Disease Facilities in April 2008. The CfCs require ESRD facilities to complete a comprehensive interdisciplinary patient assessment for all patients new to a facility. To help ESRD facilities implement this new condition into their practice, ANNA and the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) assembled an interdisciplinary team to create a patient assessment tool that could be adapted for use by facilities. ANNA�s Advanced Practice Special Interest Group (SIG) has developed a job description template for an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) practicing in nephrology. The template outlines suggested APRN roles and responsibilities but can be adapted as needed to different workplaces. The description covers areas such as job qualifications, educational preparation, professionalism and professional growth, consultation, quality management, and responsibilities in the various settings in which APRNs practice (outpatient, hospital, clinic, research). ANNA has released a new position statement entitled �Chronic Kidney Disease.� The statement emphasizes the role of nephrology nurses in improving clinical outcomes for persons with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Health promotion, prevention of complications, and education are nursing strengths that are vitally needed in the management of persons with CKD, and may may potentially result in improved quality of life, delayed progression to the initiation of kidney replacement therapy, and reduced costs to the health care system. ANNA Publishes Recommendations from Nephrology Nursing Summit Task Force on Education

In March 2003 ANNA convened the Nephrology Nursing Shortage and Solutions Invitational Summit to bring members of the renal community together to discuss issues concerning the shortage of nurses in dialysis and to create a detailed national plan to address the recruitment of nurses into nephrology and the retention of experienced nephrology nurses. As a result of the Summit, several task forces were created to address both short- and-long term solutions to opportunities identified by Summit participants to recruit and retain qualified registered nurses in nephrology. The Educational Task Force has worked diligently to create strategies for nephrology providers to use to link with schools of nursing and nursing students. The results of their work and additional resources created by the task force (such as an externship application and reference forms) were published in the November-December 2005 issue of the Nephrology Nursing Journal and are available for download on the ANNA Web site. ANNA Launches New Geriatric Web Resource

ANNA has launched Spotlight on Older Adults, a geriatric Web resource to assist nephrology nurses who care for aging patients. With an aging U.S. population and the prevalence of renal disease in that population comes a new demand on nephrology nurses to provide quality health care that addresses the needs of older individuals. ANNA Responds to CMS Regarding Conditions of Participation for Transplant Centers

On June 3 ANNA submitted a formal response to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) regarding the Hospital Conditions of Participation: Requirements for Approval and Re-approval of Transplant Centers to Perform Organ Transplants (CMS-3835-P). In February 2005 CMS released the Conditions of Participation, a proposed rule that will revise the requirements that heart, heart-lung, intestine, kidney, lung, and pancreas transplant centers must meet to participate as Medicare-approved transplant centers. ANNA Responds to CMS Regarding Conditions for Coverage for ESRD Facilities

On May 5 ANNA submitted a formal response to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) regarding the Conditions for Coverage for End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) Facilities. ANNA, NRAA, and RPA Develop Consensus Statement

Recognizing the wide variety of clinical practice issues arising from the provision of dialysis services in the acute care hospital setting, representatives of the American Nephrology Nurses� Association (ANNA), the National Renal Administrators Association (NRAA), and the Renal Physicians Association (RPA) formed a work group to explore the depth of the problem and related issues. The International Council of Nurses (ICN) has issued recommendations to its member national nurses associations and individual nurses seeking to provide relief assistance. Project HOPE is organizing U.S. health professionals interested in volunteering in the disaster relief efforts. The first 30-day volunteer humanitarian assistance mission leaves January 26 on the U.S. naval ship Mercy. Other 30-day missions will follow over the next 3 months. Published in the September/October 2004 issue of the Nephrology Nursing Journal, the Peritoneal Dialysis Tool Box is also available for free download from the ANNA Web site. The guide emphasizes thorough advance planning and includes a travel checklist, questions to ask the PD nurse, packing lists, do's and don'ts, what to do if problems arise, a wallet card, a list of travel resources, and special instructions from the PD nurse and doctor. ANNA Releases First Learning Module in Partnering for Quality Care Series

ANNA has released Stage 5 Chronic Kidney Disease: Hemodialysis in the Long Term Care Setting, the first in a series of learning modules developed by the Association to support the learning needs of nurses who care for nephrology patients in alternative settings, such as long-term care (LTC). The series, entitled Partnering for Quality Care, A Continuing Education Program for Chronic Kidney Disease Clinicians, is designed to address the nursing care needs of the chronic kidney disease (CKD) patient in settings outside of nephrology or dialysis. Given the magnitude of the population afflicted with CKD and the variety of settings in which these patients are found, the contents of each module will be of benefit to nurses caring for nephrology patients in many settings. Future modules will address other stages of CKD as well as peritoneal dialysis, pediatrics, and transplantation. Module One offers 1.5 CE credits.

September/October Issue of Nephrology Nursing Journal Focuses on Peritoneal Dialysis Issues

The September/October 2004 issue of the Nephrology Nursing Journal features a variety of articles and columns addressing key issues related to peritoneal dialysis. Maria Luongo, ANNA's Peritoneal Dialysis Special Interest Group (SIG) Leader, served as Guest Editor for this issue of the journal, and Peritoneal Dialysis SIG members contributed articles. The journal monograph includes articles on: peritoneal dialysis (PD) nursing, how PD works, comparison of PD solutions available in the US, troubleshooting non-infectious PD issues, and use of tissue plasminogen activator in PD catheters.

The issue also features a Peritoneal Dialysis Travel Tool Box in addition to departments focusing on PD issues, such as Case Study, Clinical Consult, Controversies in Nephrology Nursing, Issues in Renal Nutrition, and Professional Issues.
