November 3rd, 2011 – December 4th, 2011
Opening Reception: Thursday,November 3rd, 2011, 7-9pm

567 Gallery is pleased to present Urban Grids from 3rd November to 4th December 2011, a group exhibition of works by artists who work with the concepts of grids, networks, abstract systems and urban infrastructures. The show feature new works by artists Frau Kolb, Biying Zhang, and Claudia Sbrissa.

Artists featured in Urban Grids draws inspiration from architecture, mapping and city-themed abstraction that responds to the growing trend of globalization in urban constructs. These works highlight on all senses of the “grid”; from engaging with the formal systems to metaphoric translation of “off the grid” meaning disconnected and isolated. The exhibitionpresents a sampling of ways that artists visualize the landscape and emotional responses to living in Urban Grids.

Frau Kolb’s(formally known as CaridadBranagan Kolb) naive, bold, and colorful abstract paintings are largely representational and symbolic multi-layer narratives that reflects on topography, textile; and act as practice of meditation. Her recent work has incorporated the element of performance, as her creative process involves in collaborating with live music. Kolb is a graduate from Columbia University and her work has been exhibited Jones Contemporary Gallery; Art Haus, Venice, CA and The Pico Arts Festival, Santa Monica, CA

Biying Zhang seeks and confronts the underlying discontent, anxiety and psychological tension that are born from the depths of her urban experience. The queen size mattress, the constant protagonist in Zhang’s painting, symbolic for comfort and relaxation seems restless and alienated in familiar cityscapes. Zhang’s apocalyptic paintings present the sense of lost in the time of today’s information age. Zhang holds a MFA from The School of Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA and a BFA from Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing, China. Her work has been shown at Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA; Exchange Gallery, Cornwall, UK; Kunst-im-Tunnel Museum, Dusseldorf, Germany; and Alpha Gallery, Boston, MA.

Inspired by Moshe Safdie and David Barott’sHabitat ’67, the alternative modular living units designed for the 1967 World Exposition in Montreal, Claudia Sbrissa’s work explore histories in the form of cityscapes, neighborhoods and urban fabrics. Through overlaying the translucent vinyl, Sbrissa’s collages produce space and depth that engages with ideas of regeneration and renewal – a place that is constantly in the state of flux. Graduated from the MFA program at Cornell University, Sbrissa has also participated in the prestigious residency at Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture, ME. Her work has been exhibited at Muriel Guepin Gallery, New York, NY (Solo); Mass MoCA, North Adams, MA; Malaspina Gallery, Vancouver, Canada (Solo); and many more.

Press Release

567 Gallery is proud to present Frame/Work, an inaugural exhibition on view from August 18st,2011 – September 18nd, 2011. Comprised of works by 9 artists working in 567 Framing Corp, the exhibition looks at the relationship between an artist’s creative practices and their framing specialties at 567 Framing.

Art and Framing have always come hand in hand from as early as 2nd Century A.D in Egypt. As an established custom framing store in New York, 567 Framing have always been a hub for creative individuals. Coming from different artistically related backgrounds the inauguration for 567 Gallery will exhibit the multi-‐faceted works presented by the dynamics of our team.

Artists Includes:

Nicole Lau
Pixy Liao
Tina Liao
Hance Lee
Eleen Lin
Wendee Mai
Patrick Hughes
Yuanyuan Yang
Kevin Zhao

As an architectural designer, Nicole Lau’s “Frosted” series explores contrasting perspectives of organic forms vs. man-‐ made structures. In her other work, overlapping silhouettes of endless mountains to a diminishing wood shed on a beach, the transparency of her work functions as vague memories of space. Nicole Lau is a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, and her work has been on display at the Art Students League in New York.

Pixy Liao’s “Memphis” photographs documents her first encounter with an American city – Memphis Tennessee; the unique quality of the city’s landscape, as untouched by time, fueled Liao’s imagination of American pastimes. Liao’s has recently been chosen by Magenta foundation as “Flash Forward – Emerging Photographers 2011”. Pixy Liao was born in Shanghai, China, graduated from Shanghai International Studies Unviersity in 2002, and received her MFA from the University of Memphis in 2008. Her work had been exhibited in A.I.R Gallery, Brooklyn; Arario Gallery, New York; Kunst Licht Gallery, Shanghai; 456 Gallery, New York (Solo); Adam Shaw Gallery, Memphis (Solo); Center of Photography at Woodstock; and many more.

Tina Liao’s collages transform mundane commodities into intricate patterns and tactile textures. Playing with the idea of fabrication, Liao builds abstract formations from seeds, beans, and dough, literally translating them into fabric designs. Born in Taiwan, Liao holds an MA Fibers degree from Savannah College of Art and Design, GA and her BA from Fu Jen Catholic University in Taiwan.

Hance Lee was born in Taiwan and is a BFA graduate from Pratt Institute, New York with concentrations in Computer Graphics and Interactive Media.

Eleen Lin’s paintings reiterate Chinese folklore stories into contemporized cross-‐cultural narratives. Her “Pet Society” series explores intimacies between man and animal protagonists found in old Chinese tales, and transforming that relationship to urbanites obsessions with pet adoptions. Born in Taiwan and lived as an urban nomad in Thailand, UK, Vienna and the USA, Lin holds an MFA in Painting and Printmaking from Yale University School of Art, and a BA in Painting from the Slade School of Fine Art, London, UK. Her work had been exhibited at the Thierry Goldberg Projects, New York; Rohrer Fine Art, LA; SaLon Gallery, London; Guandong Museum of Art, Guangdong, China; Volume Black Gallery, New York; Gwangju Museum of Art, Korea; Gallery 543m3, Austria; Srinakarinwirot University Gallery, Bangkok, Thailand (solo); Gallery F-‐Stop, Bangkok (solo), Thailand; and Yunlin University of Science and Technology, Taiwan (solo); and many more.

Wendee Mai’s black & white series expresses the essentials of space and form. Although she was a graduate of Industrial and Interior Design, her main focus is sculpture and model making. These ink drawings are aslo a study of shapes and the art of its movements. They were originally designed in Solidworks as 3-‐D models for other various projects. Her work has been showcased at the AIPH Gallery; furniture that is a permanent installation at AIPH; Marketplace Design Center in Philadelphia. Her freelance work includes designs for Evanson Studios and Umbra. Wendee has also worked on set designs for various advertisements.

Patrick Hughes’ camera has taken him to far off lands deep in the Amazon jungle up to the mountains of the Andes. From Mexico to Bolivia, his photographs have brought back images rich in color and culture. Hughes was born in San Francisco, and holds a BFA in Photography from San Jose State University

Yuayuan Yang gradated with a MFA Painting from New York Academy of Art, New York and BFA in Painting from Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing, China. Her work had been exhibited in The Ethan Cohen fine Arts in Scope Basel, Switzerland; masur Museum of Art, Monroe, LA; Urban Art and Media Organization, Muenchen, Germany; Chongquing University Art Museum, China; Jack the Pelican, Brookly, NY; Limner Gallery, Hudson, NY and Sloan fine Art, New York; and many more.
