APAPASE’s Annual Student-Mentor Mixer Event took place on Tuesday, February 24th at Penn’s Weitzman School of Design, bringing together more than 70 participants – a mix of undergraduate and graduate level planning students from University of Pennsylvania, Temple University, West Chester University, and Penn State and seasoned planning professionals from both the public and private sectors.

Students were engaged in conversations with mentors to get answers to questions about future career paths. UPenn graciously hosted the event, Temple University sponsored the event, and students from our volunteer committee created the announcement flyer, formulated questions for the mentors based on input from the attendees, and helped to get the word out, which ultimately brought together the largest group of participants yet.

This year’s event featured connection cards to help students exchange contact information and make lasting connections with professionals in the field. The Southeast Section Council Chair, John Federico, introduced the organization and invited participants to get involved in planning and future events. Following that, the APA PA Chapter President, Leah Eppinger, welcomed participants on behalf of the chapter and explained how the section and chapter are related.

On January 24, 2026, the Philadelphia Future City Competition was held at Archbishop John Carroll High School in Radnor, PA. The Philadelphia Future City Competition is an educational program that challenges 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students to build a city model that solves an engineering or urban planning challenge. This year’s theme was “Farm to Table,” and over 300 students on 44 teams entered to showcase a city that “eliminates food waste from farm to table and keeps [its population] healthy and safe.”

Students’ entries were evaluated by real engineers, architects, and planners for awards in various categories, and APAPASE selected Eisenhower Science and Technology Leadership Academy in Norristown for our Excellence in Planning Award. Among other elements, their city emphasized mixed use as a strategy for putting healthy food within reach for residents. Outstanding work!

A historic building just outside the federal Callowhill Industrial Historic District, Love City has a variety of non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages, rotating food trucks, and ample indoor seating. There is street parking in the neighborhood and a paid lot right next to the brewery. It’s steps from the 23, 43, and 45 bus routes.

The 7th annual Wharton-Weitzman Future of Cities Conference will be held at The Study at University City on February 20. This year’s conference theme, Reimagining Urban Futures, will focus on balancing both aspirational and attainable visions for cities amid a convergence of challenges in recent years, including housing affordability, climate change, and shifts in federal and local funding. We aim to both discuss ambitious goals for how cities and municipalities can create the futures they boldly envision for their residents and explore the tactical, grounded steps to adjust to the changing realities of the work of improving cities. Vishaan Chakrabarti and Majora Carter will be our keynote speakers, and we will have panels and conversations on a wide variety of urbanist topics, such as housing, local economic development, building materials, climate resiliency, transportation, and more. You can learn more and purchase tickets at https://www.whartonfuturecities.com
