“Businesses are starting to see the incredible advantage that can be gained through strategic supply chain management and leadership. This is evidenced by supply chain professionals moving out of their silos and into the C-suite. Just as businesses are tearing down the walls between supply chain functions, so too should supply chain associations. By creating ASCM, we are acknowledging this pivotal shift in our industry, not only through individual learning and development, but with larger corporate transformation in mind as well,” said ASCM CEO Abe Eshkenazi, CSCP, CPA, CAE.

Making an Impact: At a time of great change and potential, ASCM is launching and expanding a set of bold, mission-driven initiatives that draw on the power of supply chains to address pressing global challenges and achieve the brightest future for individuals, companies and communities. These initiatives center on building stronger frontier and humanitarian supply chains in collaboration with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and unlocking the next supply chain innovations.

CHICAGO, IL – Oct. 2, 2018 – Today, the Association for Supply Chain Management (ASCM), the global leader in supply chain organizational transformation, innovation and leadership, announced that it is the recipient of a three-year grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. ASCM will utilize this grant to help foster the development of a regional supply chain management association, manage the evolution of a frontier supply chain maturity model and introduce globally recognized and locally adapted methods that will improve last mile availability in public health supply chains.

Through this grant, ASCM will increase educational and economic opportunities for women and encourage healthier families and communities. ASCM will help solve critical public health supply chain challenges, including weak distribution systems and a lack of reliable monitoring and data collection mechanisms. Additionally, ASCM will assist in the development and implementation of country-specific plans to elevate the maturity of local supply chain communities that directly impact supply chain reliability.

“ASCM believes that by improving supply chains, we have the opportunity to help improve lives, especially when it comes to underserved markets like those in Africa,” said APICS CEO Abe Eshkenazi, CSCP, CPA, CAE. “This grant recognizes the significant collaborative opportunity we have to implement global operating models that will not only improve public health supply chains, but also foster the overall advancement of end-to-end supply chain management in the region.”

ASCM is the global leader in the latest supply chain thinking and resources. The end-to-end supply chain association is focused on helping organizations design, implement and optimize their supply chain, as well as guiding professionals to stand out and move up in their careers. As such, ASCM is best suited to effectively deploy association operating models in the foundation’s target markets, including Dakar, Senegal; Nairobi, Kenya; and Lagos, Nigeria.

The goal of the grant project is to build self-reliant supply chain talent, increase frontier market supply chain maturity, improve distribution systems, and enable more reliable monitoring and data collection mechanisms. This project will leverage ASCM proven best practices to grow an effective, sustainable supply chain in these frontier markets. Key outcomes include:

Improve the knowledge base and association operating models of the supply chain community in frontier markets.

Establish and continually improve the supply chain maturity model for frontier markets through community engagement.

Increase last mile product availability in target market public health facilities.

“We are honored to receive this grant and work with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to improve public health supply chains in Africa, helping to perpetuate smart, sensible global health development,” Eshkenazi added.

CHICAGO, IL – Sept. 30, 2018 – Today, APICS, the premier professional association for supply chain management, honored Weir Group and Novartis as this year’s corporate winners of the prestigious APICS Awards of Excellence. The APICS Awards of Excellence are for corporations and individuals demonstrating superior performance and dedication to advancing the field of supply chain management. Awards were presented at the annual APICS 2018 supply chain conference.

“The APICS awards program is designed to recognize exemplary organizations that show dedication to the high standards APICS sets for supply chain organizations and ingenuity in the implementation of supply chain solutions,” said APICS CEO Abe Eshkenazi, CSCP, CPA, CAE. “Weir Group and Novartis are not only dedicated and creative supply chain organizations, but also wowed our judges with impressive business results. We’re thrilled to recognize their hard work at APICS 2018.”

The 2018 APICS Award of Excellence in Education was presented to Weir Group. This award recognizes an organization’s commitment to productivity and advancement based on the effective and ongoing application of the APICS body of knowledge. With employees in many different countries, divisions and business units, it was critical for Weir to develop a common understanding of supply chain terms and practices. Weir turned to APICS to provide a full supply chain body of knowledge that would enable the organization to advance its value chain excellence program and heighten overall company performance. As a result of the initiatives, one Weir business reduced its lead time by 45 percent, another decreased inventory by 20 percent, and Weir’s Oil and Gas division realized a 67 percent increase in orders compared to the previous year.

The 2018 APICS Award of Excellence in Transformation was presented to Novartis. This award recognizes organizational transformation that elevates the business and its overall supply chain performance. Novartis leaders wanted to achieve best-in-class levels of Customer Relations, ensure patients have access to the medicines they need and improve operating efficiency in order to maximize overall business success. With executive support, Novartis enhanced processes, defined key-performance indicators based on APICS Certified in Production and Inventory Management (CPIM) principles and systematically drove process and performance improvements. These initiatives led to a commercial-service-level performance increase of 3 percentage points, to a sustained 99.8 percent level; supply on-time, in-full improvement of 50 percentage points, to a sustained 90 percent level; supply lead time reductions averaging 22 percent; and substantial reductions in waste across the entire supply chain.

A panel of judges composed of members of the Editorial Advisory Board selected the APICS Awards of Excellence winners. This panel based its evaluations on the applicants’ originality of supply chain strategies, effectiveness of implementation and overall impact on business results. In addition to their recognition at APICS 2018, the winners will be featured in a 2019 issue of APICS magazine.

CHICAGO – May 2, 2018 – Today APICS, the association for supply chain management, published the “2018 Supply Chain Compensation and Career Survey Report,” a research report comprised of data from more than 2,600 U.S. supply chain professionals. The inaugural annual survey reveals a healthy outlook for those employed in supply chain, with wage increases and high job satisfaction reported across the profession. Key findings reveal the average salary for supply chain professionals in 2017 was $85,210. In addition, 90 percent of respondents received an average salary increase of at least 3 percent in 2017 and nearly all reported they are happy and likely to remain in the supply chain field.

“The data revealed in this report show that supply chain careers represent a fulfilling, dynamic and rewarding long-term career choice for professionals,” said APICS CEO Abe Eshkenazi, CSCP, CPA, CAE. “We’re excited to see that our members are well-compensated and continuing to advance in their careers. We foresee that this success will continue as supply chain professionals continue to become a more integral part of overall business strategy.”

The survey shows that continued professional education has a large impact on the salaries of supply chain professionals. Survey respondents who indicated holding one certification reported a median salary that was 19 percent more than their peers without certifications. Respondents who earned an APICS certification reported a median salary that is 27 percent more than those who indicated that they did not have any certification. Certifications were also found to have a continuing career impact. Among workers with the same tenure in the field, those with an APICS certification reported higher salaries than those without one. The survey revealed that, despite growth in compensation and job satisfaction, there still is work to do when it comes to addressing the pay gap between men and women within the field.

Summarized, the key findings of the report are:

Supply chain professionals experience high job satisfaction: When asked to rate their overall job satisfaction with working in the supply chain field overall, 96 percent of those surveyed reported high levels of satisfaction, with the average rating as 8.4 on a scale of 0-10. Overall, supply chain professionals are also satisfied with their current job position, reporting an average rating of 7.4.

Tenure matters, but recent-graduates are seeing higher initial salaries: As might be expected, supply chain professionals with the highest level of tenure also receive the highest salaries. A $39,818 gap separates the average salaries of those with at least 20 years of work experience in the supply chain field and those with less than one year in the field. However, possibly due to the current demand for recent supply chain graduates, the average salary for recent graduates is slightly higher than the salary level for those with one to three years of tenure.

Leadership roles increase salary prospects: The survey found roles that require supervision of others receive more significant compensation. Supply chain professionals who directly or indirectly supervise at least 50 individuals report an average base salary of about 82 percent more than those who do not supervise others; supervising even 1-4 individuals provides a 13 percent increase.

The value of certification: Those who hold just one certification reported a median salary that was 19 percent higher than those who are not certified. Moreover, those with 2 or 3 certifications reported median salaries of 39 percent higher and 50 percent higher, respectively.

The gender gap in supply chain: The results of the survey show that there is a pay gap between men and women in the supply chain field, and wage disparity increases with field tenure. Male respondents reported average salaries that are 15.8 percent higher than those reported by female respondents.

Using the data collected from the 2018 salary report, APICS also created an interactive salary calculator. The calculator allows ASCM Members to filter to see how changes in job title, tenure, education, certification and more can affect salary and compensation. The data in the report and calculator will be updated annually.

About the survey:

APICS received 2,659 responses to this salary survey. Respondents were instructed to answer the survey based on their position in the supply chain field in the period between July 1, 2016, and July 1, 2017, per anti-trust guidelines. A significant majority of respondents were currently in staff/associate or managerial level positions, with 11 percent being at the director level or above.

CHICAGO and MONTVALE, N.J. – January 31, 2018 – Today APICS, the association for supply chain management, and IMA® (Institute of Management Accountants), the association of accountants and financial professionals in business, published the findings of a joint research report, “Working Together to Enhance Supply Chain Management with Better Costing Practices.” For this report, APICS and IMA surveyed upper management supply chain professionals to assess the impact of issues relating to costing systems and practices. The report uncovers common barriers to creating useful costing systems and presents a solution that more closely aligns the supply chain and accounting and finance business units.

“Supply chain professionals rely on cost information when making decisions, but have indicated a need for that information to be more accurate and effective,” said APICS CEO Abe Eshkenazi, CSCP, CPA, CAE. “This report highlights the necessity for supply chain and finance departments to work more closely and adopt costing practices that are progressive and focused on informing internal decisions.”

The survey is part of an initiative by IMA’s Strategic Cost Management Task Force to improve costing practices by gathering feedback from professionals who use costing information.

“From the supply chain perspective, an effective managerial costing system has clear value. It enables better make-or-buy decisions, defines landed versus delivery costs and determines the realistic cost of holding inventory,” said IMA Vice President of Research and Policy Raef Lawson, Ph.D., CMA, CPA.

Costing information also plays a critical role in sales and operations planning. Among those surveyed, supply chain managers agreed, on average, that the benefits of improving their costing systems exceed the investment.

When asked what prevents them from utilizing current costing information, 44 percent of supply chain managers cited a lack of operational data. Instead, costing information is often reported in exclusively financial terms, making it more difficult to leverage. According to respondents, the secondary and tertiary barriers to useful costing information are inadequate technology and software (39 percent) and a resistance to change by accounting and finance personnel (30 percent).

According to the report, there are three root causes of why supply chain professionals are not receiving adequate costing information:

An overreliance on external financial reporting systems: Many organizations rely on externally-oriented financial accounting systems that employ oversimplified methods of costing products and services to produce information supporting internal business decision making.

Using outdated costing models: Traditional cost accounting practices can no longer meet the challenges of today’s business environment, but are still used by many accountants.

Accounting and finance’s resistance to change: With little pressure from managers who use accounting information to improve data accuracy and relevance, accountants are reluctant to promote new, more appropriate practices within their organizations.

The report details various steps supply chain professionals can take to improve costing systems within their organizations. One strategy presented is for supply chain managers to strengthen their relationship with accounting and finance to foster greater information flow between the two departments. Other solutions call for greater IT infrastructure and increased demand from top-level management for updated costing practices.

Supply chain professionals flock to Certified in Logistics, Transportation and Distribution program as the industry standard for mastery of logistics principles.

SAN ANTONIO – October 26, 2017 – Today APICS, the association for supply chain management, revealed that 1000 supply chain professionals have completed the APICS Certified in Logistics, Transportation and Distribution (CLTD) credential program. Announced onstage during the premier supply chain conference, APICS 2017, this milestone comes only 15 months after the initial launch of the CLTD program. APICS developed the CLTD program to help supply chain professionals meet the challenges of modern logistics, transportation and distribution management. The certification sets its holders apart as highly skilled professionals who have gained mastery of logistics knowledge.

“It is tremendously exciting to see the CLTD credential grow so quickly,” said APICS CEO Abe Eshkenazi, CSCP, CPA, CAE. “Our goal with the CLTD designation was to fill the need for a comprehensive logistics certification based on a single, universal body of knowledge. The rapid growth clearly signifies that CLTD has been accepted as the industry standard, and is highly sought after by both individuals and employers.”

The CLTD program launched in July 2016. APICS worked alongside subject matter experts to ensure the CLTD certification reflected the most important and current knowledge set necessary to pursue or advance a career in logistics, transportation and distribution. In conjunction with the new certification, APICS rolled out a comprehensive learning system to support candidates during the certification process. Candidates can choose the learning option that best suits their needs, including self-study materials through an exam preparation tool called the CLTD Learning System, online courses or classroom instruction. As evidenced by the rate in which 1,000 professionals achieved this certification, the CTLD has solidified its place as a distinctive designation within the industry.

“The CLTD designation signifies that job candidates will be valuable assets to the organization, positioning them ahead of their peers,” said Senior Director of Professional Development Bob Collins, CFPIM, CIRM, CSCP, CPLP. “The credential indicates to employers that individuals are prepared for roles spanning the field, conversely, employers are using the courseware and designation as a way to train their teams to improve supply chain performance.”

Those interested in earning the CLTD designation must pass one exam, which reflects eight critical areas in logistics, transportation and distribution, and are required to maintain the CLTD designation by obtaining 75 continuing education points every five years. The eight critical areas include:

Logistics and Supply Chain Overview

Capacity Planning and Demand Management

Order Management

Inventory and Warehouse Management

Transportation Management

Global Logistics Considerations

Logistics Network Design

Reverse Logistics and Sustainability

For 60 years, APICS has helped both individuals and organizations redefine success in supply chain management.

The CLTD program sets the global standard of logistics, transportation and distribution education, and is just one example of APICS professional development innovation. Last month, APICS launched Certified in Production and Inventory Management (CPIM) Version 6.0, a streamlined version of the highly regarded supply chain management certification designed to make it more readily accessible. APICS also recently announced the Supply Chain Operations Reference (SCOR) 12.0 model. This update improves the SCOR model, which has been the cross-industry, global standard for supply chain excellence for the last twenty years.

During the year, APICS districts held several student case competitions, sending winning teams to compete at the APICS conference each fall. On site, teams receive a supply chain problem to solve using a computer simulation game. Teams spend two days developing their solutions and then present their work to a panel of judges. This year, teams from Binghamton University, Harvey Mudd College, Loyola University, McGill University, University of Houston, University of Nebraska - Lincoln, University of Pittsburgh, Western Washington University, University of Puerto Rico - Bayamon, University of Economics in Bratislava, HEC Montreal, National School of Applied Sciences Agadir, University of Sao Paulo and Indian Institute of Management Lucknow completed the challenge.

“The APICS and The Fresh Connection (TFC) International Student Team Competition offers valuable real-world insights into the various decision-making aspects of running a business, while developing the students’ supply chain and logistics knowledge base,” said APICS CEO Abe Eshkenazi, CSCP, CPA, CAE. “Along with our APICS Scholar’s Education Program, scholarships, and awards, the Team Competition helps students advance their skills and professional networks in preparation for successful supply chain careers.”

The APICS and TFC International Student Team Competition final enables students to explore forward-thinking topics covering end-to-end supply chain, logistics and operations management. APICS recognized the companies for superior performance and dedication to advancing the field of supply chain management. Awards were presented at APICS 2017, the organization’s flagship supply chain management conference, held this week in San Antonio, Texas.

“This year we are pleased to honor Johnson Controls and Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals, two companies that have leveraged APICS’s body of knowledge to strive for excellence in everything they do,” said APICS CEO Abe Eshkenazi, CSCP, CPA, CAE. “APICS is focused on advancing global end-to-end supply chain excellence through research, education and innovation. These winners clearly share this commitment.”

Johnson Controls received the 2017 APICS Corporate Award of Excellence in Education. This award recognizes an organization’s commitment to productivity and advancement based on the effective and ongoing application of educational concepts, competencies and best practices from the APICS body of knowledge. APICS recognized Johnson Controls for the Supply Chain Excellence platform and vision created under its Johnson Controls Operating System (JCOS). The JCOS aims to standardize approaches across all Johnson Controls businesses; provide consistent, repeatable processes that lead to consistent, repeatable positive results; and increase the speed, quality and agility of how Johnson Controls operates. The Supply Chain Excellence platform provides a way to engage employees; drive operational excellence; and attain a sustainable competitive advantage for Johnson Controls customers and shareholders by designing, integrating and optimizing end-to-end demand driven supply chains.

Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals received the 2017 APICS Corporate Award of Excellence in Transformation. This award recognizes an organizational transformation that elevates the business and its overall supply chain performance as a result of a supply chain assessment leveraging the APICS body of knowledge or the APICS Supply Chain Operations Reference model. To remain competitive, Mallinckrodt strategically transformed its processes to reduce forecast variance and bias, increase agility and improve adherence to the supply plan. A team of 17 supply chain professionals, 12 of whom hold at least one APICS certification, developed new systems and accountability programs, including a master production schedule adherence plan, a master schedule change-request process and improved first-time-right performance. The transformation of demand planning, supply planning, agility and plant execution has turned Mallinckrodt’s Specialty Generics segment into a world-class supplier, affecting both profitability and Customer Relations.

A panel of judges selected the APICS Awards of Excellence winners. This panel based its evaluations on applicants’ supply chain strategies, impact and business results. In addition to their recognition at APICS 2017, the winners will be featured in a 2018 issue of APICS magazine.
