Currently, seven of the brothers from our chapter, Epsilon Gamma of Alfred University, are enjoying sectionals conference at Cornell University. Thus far, we have met numerous other brothers from the Tri-section, attended workshops, taken fabulous photos, and contributed to discussions about legislation for the area. This is considered to be an important bonding experience among the chapter, and it is serving its purpose. Besides the laughs and good times we are sharing with our fellow brothers, we celebrated a birthday(Johnny Benjamin’s), slept in a holy sanctuary, and were fed delicious muffins and donuts. For all of you out there who knows who Polaris is, mini Polaris is with us at Cornell making a Sectional debut. Let’s hope he doesn’t get kidnapped and put up for ransom by another chapter. Well, I have to return to making letter shirts so I will update you furthur when the time draws near. (dun dun dun)

“I want to give you some info that makes me proud of APO and will help you boast about your membership in the Fraternity. Since it really isn’t bragging if it’s true, here are some facts you should have at your fingertips.

Alpha Phi Omega is the largest organized Greek‐letter society in the world, in terms of number of chapters and number of alumni. We ended this year at a new membership high – 18,064 – for the second straight record year. During the 2008 Spring Youth Service Day, 4,573 members performed 35,033 hours of service and raised $73,300, reaching 43,768 youths.

The chapters at the University of Michigan and Clemson University hold the single largest blood collections in their respective states, bringing in more than 5,000 pints of blood annually. That has the potential to save over 15,000 lives each year! In fact, so many chapters plan and run blood drives that the American Association of Blood Banks gave Alpha Phi Omega a national award in 1988.

We provided 270 leadership development opportunities for thousands of students and alumni through the Fraternity’s five APO LEADS courses – Launch, Explore, Achieve, Discover and SERVE – during the last year. In addition, more then 120 alumni attended our National Volunteer Conference, Alpha Phi Omega’s premier leadership development program for alumni volunteers and advisors.

These are just a few fun facts from the national perspective. I encourage you to do a little research and come up with items to share from your own area. I know you will find what I have – that we have a lot to be proud of, thanks to the efforts of our members.”

– Maggie Katz
Alpha Phi Omega National President

With so many organizations looking to help out in their communities, it’s often hard to stand out and get noticed. Rather than focus efforts to one particular area of community service, Alpha Phi Omega allows individual chapters to choose their service projects. These projects can change from semester to semester depending on the interests of its members. In many ways, this makes us a sustainable organization on a college campus where the interests change with every new class.

As the premier leadership service organization in the nation, we want the best students on campus to realize their potential as leaders of the future. We’re boundless in our goals and aspirations as is every person in Alpha Phi Omega. We want you to bring your ideas and interests because it’s up to you what we do. Let’s embrace our unique qualities together and create a better tomorrow in the process.

For those interested in the Epsilon Gamma Chapter, learn how you can become a part of the Fall 2008 Pledge Class by attending our meeting this Sunday at 5:30pm in the Kenyon/Allen/Davis Room on the second floor of the Powell Campus Center.

From the outside, Alfred University may not look like much but within this small town, we have the ability to do great things. Alpha Phi Omega | Epsilon Gamma was established in 1947 and has had a long tradition of community service in this and the surrounding areas.

One way we are able to keep on this tradition is through new members, which are gained by the pledge process. Pledges are our hope for the future. They will become the leaders, our friends, and serve those around them just as the founding members of our chapter hoped in 1947.

With them, we can help fight hunger (Angel Food Ministries), give our time at the local animal shelter (Hornell Humane Society), volunteer at blood drives (American Red Cross), build a house for those that would never own one without us (Habitat for Humanity), and take a moment out of our busy lives to clean up what others have carelessly left behind (Adopt-a-Highway).

We are capable of more than we realize. Within each of us lies endless possibilies of greatness, and together, we can help save the world.

If you are not a member, please consider joining us for our Pledge Ceremony tomorrow at 5:30pm in the Kenyon/Allen/Davis Room, Powell Campus Center.

Be a Leader, Be a Friend, Be of Service… Today and Everyday.

To better serve the shelter, two groups will be going at different times. If you’re more of a morning person, go with Group 1: 10am – 1pm. If you’d rather sleep in, go with Group 2: 12pm – 3pm. Just let us know by emailing alphaphi@alfred.edu.
