'The Great Gatsby' - C+ (Voice Over D-)

Let me first state, I love Baz Luhrmann. I love his visuals, I love the music choices, I love his casting. I love his amazing wife Catherine Martin, for whom nothing that is his could exist. A perfect yin to his yang.

Let me also state, useless voice over, as a plot device, needs to be stopped. It is the item MOST used to move a bad script along. Writers, your audience isn't stupid. They can figure out that a character is driving a car or walking down the street WITHOUT being told it's happening.

Now you see my dilemma when watching 'The Great Gatsby.' It is visually the perfect foible to the loud, crass crap that litters the Summer viewing season. However, it is been soiled with one of the WORST voice overs ever! Leonardo Dicaprio is sublime. However, DiCaprio seems almost superfluous in some scenes, as the miscast Tobey Maguire’s voice-over narrates Gatsby's actions faster than he can complete them. By the end of the film, I was rolling my eyes and hoping for another one of the fantastic songs to drown out my urge to climb through the screen and throttle Mr. Maguire.

The supporting cast was perfect, Isla Fisher particularly. The heavily CGI film was beautiful, but I can not forgive that they gave the tone of the film over to a butcher, yes, Mr. Maguire, I mean you.

Pros -
- Soundtrack, with major credit to Jay-Z, as Luhrmann films always do, delivers.
- Visual stunning
- The dynamic between Leonardo Dicaprio and Joel Edgerton ('Zero Dark Thirty'/Star Wars I and II) almost saved the film for me.

Cons -
- Tobey Maguire - PLEASE SHUT UP!!!!! You are a poor representation of almost the same character played by Ewan McGregor in 'Moulin Rouge.' Very, very poor casting.
- Not every metaphor needs to be visually displayed. Again, the audience is not stupid.
- Carey Mulligan, one of my favourite Doctor Who heroines, has reduced to simpering and whining and by the end, I could care less. Watch her in 'An Education' or the amazing 'Drive,' but don't expect a lot here. She is mostly wasted.

Edgar Wright Screens SHAUN OF THE DEAD and Debuts UK Trailer for THE WORLD’S END; SCOTT PILGRIM VS THE WORLD Cast Joins Him for Encore Screening

Just last night, writer-director Edgar Wright participated in a pair of Q&As at screenings of Shaun of the Dead and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World as part of Entertainment Weekly’s ongoing CapeTown Film Fest. In addition to providing fans some behind-the-scenes trivia on both films, Wright also debuted the UK trailer for his conclusion to the Three Flavours Cornetto / Blood and Ice Cream Trilogy, The World’s End. While Wright asked the audience not to reveal too much about it before it’s released next week, I can say that it certainly looks to be in line with the previous two films and is intended to tie the entire trilogy together. As for what else Wright had to say, hit the jump.

On the topic of The World’s End, you can get a brief look at footage from the movie here. The story centers on five childhood friends (Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Eddie Marsan, Paddy Considine and Martin Freeman) going through an epic pub crawl in order to reach the fabled pub which the movie is named after. During their crawl, they discover that the fate of humankind is on the line. Also starring Rosamund Pike, The World’s End opens in the U.K. on July 19th and in the U.S. on August 23rd.

Other possible titles for Shaun of the Dead were Tea Time of the Dead and Dave of the Dead.
A British TV station that only chooses one word to censor left in every instance of the word “fuck” and chose to replace the one utterance of the word “cunt” with “cock” instead.
Obviously a big fan of George Romero’s work, Wright wanted Shaun of the Dead to be set in the same world as Dawn of the Dead, but with a very British take on it.
Romero was actually the first person outside of the production to see the finished film. Upon viewing it, he called Wright and gave him his reaction, calling it, “Classy.”
Wright had additional Foree Electric name badges made up for Romero and star Ken Foree. Foree’s original said “Assistant Manager” but was quickly changed to “Manager.”
The idea for the Cornetto trilogy started with the ice cream brand itself, which is Wright’s go-to cure for a hangover. Since Pegg and Frost’s characters are hungover during the morning of the zombie outbreak, Wright thought it would be funny for Ed (Frost) to ask Shaun (Pegg) for one when he makes a trip to the shop. At the premiere for Shaun of the Dead, free Cornetto ice creams were made available for everyone courtesy of the brand’s company. Pegg and Wright thought this was great so they decided to work Cornetto in to their Hot Fuzz screenplay because: free ice cream.
In addition to the mention of Cornetto – which will be the green mint chocolate chip-flavored variety this time around - The World’s End will seek to tie in the other two films into a true trilogy.
On Pegg’s character, Wright said that Shaun is an every-man who isn’t trying to save the world but is just trying to survive the day, Nicholas Angel of Hot Fuzz is a stand-up guy trying to do the right thing who lands in the middle of everything going wrong, and Gary King in The World’s End is completely wild and begins to think that, yes, perhaps he is the reason that bad things are happening.
Wright revealed that everyone who starred in either Shaun of the Dead orHot Fuzz will be seen in The World’s End.
Joining Wright on stage for Scott Pilgrim were cast members Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Brandon Routh and Satya Bhabha, plus comics creator Bryan Lee O’Malley.
Bhabha had a great story about auditioning for the role. Although Bhabha lived near Wright in London, he knew that Wright wasn’t looking for any British actors for the film. Bhabha put on a convincing American accent for the audition and won the part of the first Evil Ex, Matthew Patel.
As for the controversial ending of the film versus the eventual end of the O’Malley comics, O’Malley hadn’t written his own ending during the film’s production and he gave his blessing for the filmmakers to end it as they saw fit. A version was drawn up that would have had Scott ending up with Knives (Ellen Wong) and then showing a moment of doubt in his final decision. Wright said that Wong was far too sweet and he couldn’t do that to her, plus the alternate version almost caused fist fights to break out over dissenting reactions of audience members at a test screening.
For all of the film’s visual and special effects accents, getting the rights to use and change the color of so many branded t-shirts proved especially time consuming. They had to ask the Smashing Pumpkins for permission to use their shirt design and change it to green – simply because that’s how O’Malley drew it – while scouring the internet for O’Malley’s inspiration for a scrawled The Kinks shirt; they also asked Sharpie if they could use their logo for a completely new shirt.
Much attention was paid to the color palette of the film; the t-shirts are simply a visual anchor for that.
O’Malley took his wife on their first date in the same park location that Scott and Ramona date in the movie.
Before screening Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Wright treated the audience to the live-action proof-of-concept treatment for Ant-Man. It’s the same video that was shared with Comic-Con attendees, which is a fully-realized version of this storyboard sequence.

As y’all know, Trent‘s been in NYC for the past few days and I’m pretty sure he’s having the best time ever. Even though nothingcompared to our day at the Yankee’s game, I know he also had an amazing time seeing Alan Cumming in his one-man show production of William Shakespeare‘s Macbeth. I got to talk toTrent about it when we hung out and I am sooo obsessed with the idea of going to see this show, lol. Macbeth is a story that, as we know, never gets old and new actors are always coming along to take on the role. Michael Fassbender is now joining the rans of actors who’ve gone Macbeth, which is pretty exciting. I mean,Fassy as Macbeth? Yespleasemorethanyou. Click inside to learn more!

Everyone from Sam Worthington (really) to Orson Welles has taken on “Macbeth,” and the Shakespeare play that dare not say it name has been adapted countless time for the stage, television and multiplex. Well, when it comes to the latter, (quality) movie versions have been a bit fewer and far between, so the news that Michael Fassbender might take the lead in “the Scottish play” certainly has our attention.

The actor is attached to a new version of Shakespeare’s work that will be directed by the fast rising “Snowtown” director, Justin Kurzel. Penned by Todd Louiso (the director behind “Love Liza” and “Hello I Must Be Going”) and Jacob Koskoff (who co-penned “The Marc Pease Experience” with Louiso), the story will be the same, set in the 11th century and will be presented in the original dialogue. However, this version will be more “visceral” and contain “significant battle scenes.” And this production is coming together pretty fast.

Plans are underway for the film to shoot later this year, and will seemingly be bumping plans for Kurzel’s adaptation of John Le Carre’s “Our Kind Of Traitor” which had Ralph Fiennes and Mads Mikkelsen lining up. A bit of bummer, but still, Fassy + Macbeth is a combo we won’t argue with. And speaking of the actor who is currently lensing “X-Men: Days Of Future Past,” this is nice meaty project to dive into after the VFX extravaganza. As for Lady Macbeth? Talks are apparently underway with an unnamed “Hollywood leading actress.” Suggestions?

I heard so many good things about this director (Justin Kurzel) and I have to see Snowtown Murders now. I think it’s based on a massacre that took place in Australia. Anyway, I heard good things and I need to catch up on this guy.

Plus, Fassy? Do y’all see him as Macbeth? It’s been ages since I’ve seen a production of the play but it makes perfect sense to me. Then again, there’s not a lot that I don’t see him doing. I think this could definitely be a strong production.

Oscar nominee Gabourey Sidibe is joining the third season of FX's anthology hit American Horror Story: Coven.

Creator Ryan Murphy announced the casting news on Twitter, tweeting, "Thrilled to announce Oscar nominee Gabourey Sidibe is joining the cast of American Horror Story: Coven."

Sidibe, who currently stars alongside Laura Linney on The Big C, joins fellow AHS newcomer Kathy Bates for the highly anticipated new season, which will film on location in New Orleans among other places.

Jessica Lange, Evan Peters, Lily Rabe, Frances Conroy, Sarah Paulson and Taissa Farmiga are all confirmed to return for season three.

Of Coven, Murphy recently teased, "It's a really cool story we've been talking about for a couple of years. So we're going to do that."

Marvel: Phase Two hasn’t even started to hit theaters, but sometimes you just want to rush to desert. While walking the red carpet at the Iron Man 3 premiere, writer-director Joss Whedonwas asked a couple questions regarding The Avengers 2. First up, since it sounds like Robert Downey Jr. is considering retirement from the Marvel Universe, some may be wondering if we’ll see Iron Man flying around in Whedon’s film. Whedon responded, “I am not the guy who has to worry about him being replaced. He is Iron Man at this point. When I heard that he was cast I knew that something had just changed, and I usually don’t know stuff like that.” It sounds fairly certain that Downey is on board for The Avengers 2, but beyond that, Whedon doesn’t know if the actor will continue with the series.

DesdeHollywood is misleading in their headline about “The Avengers 3” because as you’ll see in their video, the interviewer never asks about The Avengers 3. He says, “The Avengers are very, very powerful. Why should they be concerned about someone like Thanos?” Whedon responded:

“Well, Thanos is more powerful. He is so powerful, he is not someone you can just trot out and punch him. Like he did in the comics, you want him to be threading through the universe and to save the big finale for the big finale. He is definitely a part of what I’ve got going on. The thing about the Avengers is that they are very powerful, but they’re not very stable. So, there will definitely be some people that will shake them up in the next installment.”

This statement seems to put to rest any dispute on whether or not Thanos is the big villain ofGuardians of the Galaxy. The main antagonist of that picture now looks to be The Collector, who will be played by Lee Pace. I’m sure Thanos will still have a presence, and perhaps that presence is going to grow throughout Phase Two rather than simply dropping the character intoGuardians so that the audience will go, “Oh, hey. It’s that purple dude again.”

Why Are So Many Christians Practicing Witchcraft?

When you read the headline of my column you probably had one of two thoughts:

“Christians are practicing witchcraft?” or “I’m not practicing witchcraft! I don’t read tarot cards, mix potions or cast spells!”

The answer to the first thought is, yes, Christians are practicing witchcraft. As for your insistence that you are not practicing witchcraft, well, you may not be moving in divination, but that doesn’t mean you aren’t engaging in witchcraft.

Consider what the Bible says about witchcraft. It may surprise you to learn that what the world—or even what the Wiccans—call witchcraft is not always one in the same as what the Bible calls witchcraft. For example, when you think of witchcraft, you probably think of black magic or conjuring the dead. Those abominations are covered in the Bible.

But witchcraft is not always so mysterious. Indeed, rebellion, word curses and works of the flesh also fall into the realm of witchcraft. However you define it, though, practicing witchcraft is a serious sin, and far more Christians are experts at sorcery than you may realize.

Rebellion Compared to WitchcraftRemember when King Saul was ordered to utterly destroy the Amalekites and everything they had: man, woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass? Saul found victory in battle against Israel’s enemy by the grace of God, but failed to obey the voice of God when the dust settled. He spared Agag, the king of the Amalekites, and kept the best of the livestock (see 1 Sam. 15:1-9).

Saul proposed that his intention was to sacrifice the animals to the Lord, but there’s no excuse for disobedience. Saul was so stubborn that he at first refused to admit his disobedience. He actually justified his actions. Only after Samuel rebuked Saul did he catch the revelation that obedience is better than sacrifice (see 1 Sam. 15:22). In that rebuke—and in Saul’s response—we find one way Christians are practicing a sin that's in the realm of witchcraft: through rebellion that arises when the fear of man is greater than the fear of the Lord. Let’s listen in on the exchange:

“For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the Lord, he hath also rejected thee from being king. And Saul said unto Samuel, I have sinned: for I have transgressed the commandment of the Lord, and thy words: because I feared the people, and obeyed their voice” (1 Sam. 15:23-24, KJV). Unfortunately, Saul didn’t learn his lesson. He continued disobeying God and eventually lost his kingdom. Fear of man was at the root of his rebellion, but rebellion grows from many roots. If you see rebellion operating in your life, find the root and rip it out!

Jezebel’s Word CursesThen there’s Jezebel’s witchcraft. In 2 Kings 9:22, right before the wicked queen’s demise, Jehu offered insight into an open door for the Jezebel spirit when he told her son, “What peace, so long as the whoredoms of thy mother Jezebel and her witchcrafts are so many?” The spirit of Jezebel is essentially a spirit of seduction that works to escort believers into immorality and idolatry (see Rev. 2:20). And this spirit uses witchcraft against its enemies.

Jezebel’s witchcraft was rooted in rebellion, but the type of witchcraft in this verse refers to incantations and spells. In the modern church world, we call them word curses. Jezebel released a word curse against Elijah that carried a spirit of fear when she sent him this message: “So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I make not thy life as the life of one of them by to morrow about this time” (1 Kin. 19:2, KJV).

In modern times, word curses aren’t always so dramatic. When we speak negatively over someone’s life—“They will never hold down a job acting like that,” “Their marriage is bound to fail the way he treats her,” “The doctors said he’s going to die in 30 days. Isn’t that sad?”—we are agreeing with the enemy’s plan and giving power to it with our anointed mouths. The power of death and life are in the tongue (see Prov. 18:21). If you are inadvertently—or purposely—releasing witchcraft over people with the words of your mouth, repent and get your mouth back in line with the Spirit of God.

Works of Your FleshMake no mistake. The Spirit of God is against witchcraft in whatever form it takes, from divination to magic to rebellion to word curses—to works of the flesh. Paul explained that the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh. What are the works of the flesh? Galatians 5:19-21 lists them: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like.

Notice that witchcraft is listed right alongside adultery and fornication. Witchcraft is a serious offense in any manifestation. As a work of the flesh, witchcraft violates the First Commandment: “You shall have no other gods before me.” The flesh opposes the move of the Spirit and resists all things spiritual. This is a serious struggle because Paul assures us that those who practice witchcraft will not inherit the kingdom of God (see Galatians 5:21).

But there is yet good news. If you walk in the Spirit, you will not fulfill the lusts of the flesh (see Galatians 5:16). How do you know if you are walking in the Spirit? The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. When you walk in the Spirit, this fruit manifests.

If you know you are disobeying God in an area, repent of this sin, which God views in the same way as witchcraft, and get back in line with the Spirit. If you are cursing people with your negative words of gossip and death, stop practicing this witchcraft and begin blessing. If you are flowing in fleshly witchcraft, crucify your flesh with its passions and desires. If you live in the spirit, walk in the Spirit—and walk free from the practice of witchcraft. Amen.

Rawle plays Amos Diggory in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (father to Cedric Diggory), and played Plantagenet in a 1984 episode of Doctor Who titled Frontios.
Jessica Hynes

Hynes provided the voice for Mafilda Hopkirk in the Harry Potter films before the character appeared in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, where she was played by Sophie Thompson. In Doctor Who, she played three separate related characters who The Doctor meets at various points in time.
Jimmy Gardner

Gardner played the driver of the Knight Bus in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and played an alien named Idmon in a 1978 episode of Doctor Who.

Atterbury played the portraits of Phineas Nigellus Black in the Harry Potter films, and did some costume acting for several episodes of Doctor Who in the 1960s.
Julian Glover

Glover provided the voice for Aragog in the Harry Potter films, and played both Richard the Lionheart in a 1965 episode of Doctor Who as well as an alien named Scaroth in a 1979 episode.
Terence Bayler

Bayler plays the ghost and portrait of the Bloody Baron in the Harry Potter films, and appears as an alien named Yendom in an episode of Doctor Who from 1966.

David Tennant Cast to Play the Killer in NBC’s Hannibal

Tennant is set to play a ‘seriously deranged’ serial killer in the new upcoming Sky Living show Hannibal, set before the events of the 1991 film Silence of the Lambs.

Tennant initially auditioned for the lead role of Hannibal Lecter (played in the 1991 film by Sir Anthony Hopkins), but narrowly lost out to Mads Mikkelsen (Casino Royale).

The series, developed by Bryan Fuller (Star Trek: DS9 and Pushing Daisies) is based on characters and events from the novel Red Dragon by Thomas Harris. It focuses on the relationship between FBI Special Agent Will Graham – played by Hugh Dancy (Cold Feet) and Dr. Hannibal Lecter, a forensic psychiatrist (before he discovered the joys of liver and Chianti). Also starring are Laurence Fishburne, Eddie Izzard and Gillian Anderson.

Hannibal will air on Sky Living from 7th May 2013 – However if you have access to Sky’s On Demand service or Sky Go you can actually watch the premier nearly a week early from Wednesday 1st May. In the meantime check out the trailer below

The TARDIS

This weekend – Saturday at 8/7c on BBCAMERICA – we get to have a proper rummage around in the bowels of the TARDIS, in the Doctor Who adventure that is helpfully titled Journey To The Centre Of The TARDIS.

Which has, of course, prompted a whole series of discussions debating the relative worth of previous trips in and around this most mysterious of blue boxes. The Doctor’s TARDIS has been a subject of fascination and debate ever since the chameleon circuit first got stuck, when hiding as a police box in 1963, and the Doctor’s granddaughter’s teachers stumbled into a whole new world. It remains as iconic and enigmatic now as it did then, from the little lamp on top to the hexagonal console inside.
