Skill Level: Intermediate and Advanced Only. Participants should have good drawing skills and an understanding of color. Because of the intricacies of the forested interior, this workshop is not suitable for beginning artists.

Medium: Demo will be given in oil. Participants may use the medium of their choice.

Limit: This workshop is limited to seven (7) participants.

We will be painting the rocks, streams, and forested interior of South Mountains State Park. After a short hike to our location, a demo will be given, and then each participant will select a spot and begin painting. Individual instruction and critique will be given during this time. The park is located approximately one and a half hours west of Charlotte / Lake Norman and is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Participants are welcome to get an early start or stay later to finish. Upon RSVP, supply lists and directions will be emailed to you.

My next landscape painting workshop will be August 9, 2008, at Turkey Run Park in McLean, Virginia. We will narrow our topics of study and focus on the beginning to middle stages of a painting.

Workshop Cost: Two Sessions (combined) - $100.00 | One Session (morning or afternoon) - $60.00

Morning Session (9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.) - Demo will focus on characteristics of a good composition (placement of foreground/middle ground/background, and how these things relate to one another).

Lunch Break (1:30 to 2:30 p.m.) - Group critiques for those interested.

Afternoon Session (2:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.) - Demo will focus on techniques for painting trees.

Each session will start with a demo, which will focus on the learning topic for that session. After demo, each participant will select a spot and begin painting. Because the light changes about every two hours, each participant will work on at least two paintings per session to work quickly with the changing light, focusing on setting up a painting (first session) and on tree studies (second session). Individual instruction and critique will be given during this time. This workshop is suitable for students of all skill levels.

If the workshop needs to be postponed, or one of the sessions rescheduled, due to bad weather, we will have it Sunday, August 10.

I will be teaching an Understanding Principles of the Landscape workshop in southwest Charlotte, North Carolina, at the McDowell Nature Preserve July 19-20, 2008 (view the workshop flyer for more details).

This is a plein air landscape painting workshop overlooking Lake Wylie. It is from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. each day and is limited to eight (8) participants. All skill levels and mediums are welcome. I will be demonstrating in oils. Work Featured in PAFA Alumni Exhibit

Two of my paintings were selected by Juror David R. Brigham, Ph.D., the Edna S. Tuttleman Museum Director of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA), for exhibit in the PAFA Juried Alumni Exhibition 2008.

The exhibit runs through July 27, 2008, in Gallery 128, 128 N. Broad Street, Philadelphia, PA, on the first floor of the Samuel M. V. Hamilton Building. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. Admission is Free.

This special exhibition features 74 graduates of the Academy, and all artwork is for sale. Twenty-percent of all artwork sold will benefit the Alumni Annual Fund of the Academy.

I just returned from a very eventful trip up to Maryland. The landscape painting workshop at Belle Haven Park in Alexandria, Virginia (June 21-22) went really well. I will be planning another workshop in the DC area for early August.

Two-Day Plein Air Landscape Workshop June 21-22, Alexandria, Virginia

I will be teaching a two-day Plein Air Workshop titled "Understanding Principles of the Landscape." The workshop will take place on June 21-22, 2008, at Belle Haven Park in Alexandria, Virginia. For full details, please download the flyer and registration form.

In this workshop, we will be dealing with the problems artists face during the beginning, middle, and end stages of a painting. Through demo, discussion, and critiques, Paul will help participants develop a higher understanding of and gain a greater confidence in painting the landscape. We will cover topics such as, how to work with your materials, the use of drawing as a foundation in painting, color choices, the importance of a good composition, and more. This workshop is suitable for students of all skill levels. Paul will start each day with a short lecture and discussion time, followed by a demonstration. The remainder of each day will be spent painting the landscape with each student receiving individual guidance as needed.

I cannot believe how quickly the last third of 2007 went. Months felt like weeks and weeks, days. I wanted to thank everyone who has supported, encouraged, or shown an interest in my work and my life over the past year.

2007 was a year of many changes for me. I moved from Maryland to Concord, NC, in January, a temporary residence while house hunting. In March, I joined the Lake Norman Art League and started my first "miniature" paintings. In April, I decided to start this blog, and because of a lack of work space, took up the practice of completing several miniature paintings a week (works which are all posted on this blog). In May, I purchased and moved into my first home in Charlotte, NC. June and July were months of transition as I became adjusted to my new work space and for the first time, a somewhat settled life.

During the summer, my wife and I were asked to serve on the Board of Officers for the Lake Norman Art League. As summer drew to a close, I began to focus more on my larger work, phasing out work on miniature paintings. In September, I joined the Mooresville Artist Guild to become more involved in the local art community. I participated in several shows during the fall and received recognition for several different works. Moreover, I started to turn my attention back to figurative study and work, as I intend to incorporate the figure into my landscapes more. Two books that have proved to be a valuable resource are Classical Drawing Atelier - A Contemporary Guide to Traditional Studio Practice by Juliette Artistides, Watson-Guptill, 2006; and The Artist's Complete Guide to Figure Drawing: A Contemporary Perspective on the Classical Tradition by Anthony Ryder, Watson-Guptill, 1999.

Looking Ahead to 2008: I have thought about getting back to teaching for some time now, and in early January, I will be starting a Long Pose Figure Drawing Class held at the Mooresville Artist Guild. My painting, English Pointer, will appear in the January/February 2008 issue of Garden and Gun Magazine, as part of the feature titled "Good Dog." Look for that to hit newsstands sometime in mid-January 2008. I have many plans and goals for 2008. I hope you will check in from time to time to read more about what's happening in my life as an artist and to view newly completed paintings and other works. I don't really know when it started, and I have not received much information from the hosting company. If you emailed me during this time, I most likely did not receive your email. In addition, any emails I may have sent out, during the month of December, may not have been received. I will post some more of my latest work soon. Things have been pretty hectic. Since my last post, I finished the painting Moonrise Over the Marsh (shown at left). I also completed a couple of commissions and am working on a couple more.

Please Note: The reds in the pear are more vibrant, with a greater constrast from light to dark, in the actual painting. I eliminated as much glare as I could from the photo, but there is still too much glare along the bottom of the pear and to the left that I couldn't correct in the photo.

Please Note: The colors in the actual watercolor are more vibrant than depicted on screen. For instance, the mountains furthest back are a deep blue green, but despite my best efforts, I could not correct the colors in the digital image enough.

Framing

Several people have asked where and how to frame these paintings, since they are sold unframed. If you decide to get one of these small paintings framed, I would recommend a frame between two to four inches in width, depending on the style of the frame and your preferences. Larger frames help give these small paintings more emphasis. Make sure you ask your framer about conservation techniques, as everything should be easily reversible without damaging the art or the frame. The framed painting should hang with a wire. Sawtooth hooks easily pull out from the frame, resulting in a dropped painting.

For those interested, I will frame your painting for you. I have just ordered a variety of frames, and will post the ones I have in stock once the shipment arrives. I can also mat and frame works on paper. I use conservation quality materials when framing.
