"A Time of Reflection" ~ Autumn Landscape A Painting a Day by Connie Tom

This is a painting of a sunset off the coast in California. In my own reflection upon this painting.... I see that I’m painting more and more sunsets and sunrises and that my favorite colors to paint are these yellows, oranges, reds and raspberries. Sunrises and sunsets signal a change coming in the day. To me it offers hope, beauty, glory and grace. I loved the sky colors reflecting in the water and on the rocks. ~ Enjoy!

I hope you can feel there was a voracious storm that had just taken place over this Texas landscape and was now beginning to break up. The sun is starting to shine, highlighting the clouds in the center of the painting. The yellow green grass is vivid from the rain. The horses had taken shelter under their favorite tree from the storm are yet unsure whether it is safe to come out into the open field yet.

"SUNDOWN ON THE RIO GRANDE" is a work of color and light, mood and atmosphere. This work pictures a view of the Rio Grande River at sundown. The colors are very romantic...reminding us of those skies where the cowboy rides off into the sunset. This clouds and sky are vibrant with colors and compliments the western flair. The sun and sky colors are softly reflected on the water.

The music of the eyes

In his journals, Delacroix said that colors are "the music of the eyes," that they "combine like sounds" that create harmonies rivaling those produced by the great composers with great orchestras. In fact, he says: "Certain color harmonies produce sensations that even music cannot achieve." This artist tries hard to produce color harmonies that create positive and uplifting sensations.

The sun was setting and the light hitting the canyon walls was amazing! You could still see a little of the blue sky just above the canyon. But the moisture in the air created this wonderful mists rising from the canyon. The whole affect was sheer ambiance. Enjoy!

This painting is a scene from South Carolina’s Hunting Island State Park which covers 5,000 acres of pristine salt marsh, beach and maritime forest. I loved the contrast of the complementery colors of the deep reds and oranges in the sky against the light greens in the grasses. And of course I always love sunrises and sunsets. This painting is a scene from the panhandle town of St. Marks in Florida. In the 1820’s, this town was considered a vital port of entry for the planting and growing regions in Florida and Georgia. Today this small community (population 315) is known for bordering St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge. Pristine coastal marshes, tidal creeks and upland forests give us a look at an unspoiled Florida, where peace and quiet reign. This is a painting of St. Marks Lighthouse, where you can see miles of marsh and sandy beach.

This work pictures a mid-view of water with two canoeists in a canoe in autumn. Autumn is in full array and it's exciting reds and wonderful colors are being reflected in the water. I thought about putting a horizon line or a ground line in the upper portion of the painting, but decided to leave the whole scene in view of the beautiful autumn reflections in the water. I liked the blurriness of the colorful reflections in the water in contrast to the distinctiveness of the canoeists and the canoe. ~ Enjoy!

I paint a lot of nature scenes and scenes of the wilderness. This scene pictures the buffalo among the geysers at Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming. I was reading an article in the Sunday paper about how fatigue can set in with too many decisions. It was suggested that we take a look at scenes of nature. it said that studies have shown that nature scenes can restore and regenerate attention. John Muir (b.21 April 1838) was a Scottish-born American naturalist and author and advocate of the preservation of wilderness in the United States. He petitioned the U.S. Congress for the National Park bill that was passed in 1890. Because of the spiritual quality and enthusiasm toward nature expressed in his writings, he was able to inspire readers, including presidents and congressmen, to take action to help preserve large nature areas. He is referred to as the "Father of the National Parks" today.
