Decision to democratise constitution, PPP

ISLAMABAD Pakistan resident Asif Ali Zardari has said that the Pakistan Peoples Party will rid the Constitution of all undemocratic clauses in consultation with other political forces and change the repressive system that had spawned terrorism, militancy and dictatorship in the country.

He said this while addressing the Central Executive Committee (CEC) of the party met in the Presidency on Monday.

The meeting was attended by members of the Central Executive Committee including the Prime Minister. Bakhtawar Zardari Bhutto the daughter of Co-Chairman and the President who attended the meeting as a special invitee.

Spokesperson of the President former Senator Farhatullah Babar said the meeting lasted for over 5 hours during which the current political situation and the proposed Constitutional amendments were discussed, he said.

The President said that the PPP will redeem its pledge to democratise the Constitution. “Some others may have other agendas but the PPP is clear about its commitment to democratic principles and will fulfill it.”

Zardari said there was a need to undo the 17th Amendment and 58(2) (B) and reform the Constitution in the light of Charter of Democracy.

After the marathon discussion the CEC adopted a number of resolutions.

President Obama in Moscow, US President Barack Obama and Russian counterpart Dmitry Medvedev reach a deal in Moscow to cut back their stockpiles of nuclear weapons.

In an interview with Russian TV broadcast over the weekend, Obama said only that he hoped to win agreement on the “framework” of a treaty during the four hours of meetings. He also emphasized the importance of sending a message of general agreement as the two sides work toward crafting a strategic arms reduction treaty to replace the one that expires in December.

“For us to send a strong signal that we want to reduce our stockpiles I think would help us internationally, to give people a sense that we’re moving into a new era and we want to get beyond the Cold War,” Obama told Itar-Tass TV.

Speaking to reporters Sunday, Gary Samore, the White House point man on weapons of mass destruction, said he expects Obama and Medvedev will announce progress after their meeting. But Samore acknowledged that a major issue is the continued U.S. movement toward construction of a missile defense system based in Poland and the Czech Republic, which Russian officials consider a stumbling block to the larger agreement.

Samore spoke of the missile shield in terms of an ongoing debate, referring to the “very good argument” the U.S. has to make to the Russians about why they shouldn’t feel threatened by the shield project.

“Our current missile defense . . . is designed exclusively to deal with threats from countries like North Korea and Iran,” Samore said. “We don’t believe that it poses a threat to Russian strategic systems.”

Russia still has to be convinced, he said, “so obviously parallel to these strategic arms talks, we’ve had discussions with the Russians about missile defense in order, we hope, to demonstrate to them that what we’re doing on missile defense doesn’t pose a threat to their nuclear deterrent.”

Medvedev, in his own weekend interviews, did not sound open to the argument that the shield was meant to protect against North Korea and Iran.

“In terms of missile defense, Poland and the Czech Republic are one thing, Iran is a different one altogether,” he said. “They are too far apart geographically.”

What’s more, Medvedev told Italy’s Corriere della Sera newspaper that he considers the missile shield “interrelated” with any talks of reducing strategic weapons. Nuclear arms, he said, “do not exist by themselves, rather they exist together with the means for defending against them, that is antimissile defense.”

Obama will also meet with Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, who is considered the most influential figure in Moscow.

As he prepared for his visit, Obama said his overarching agenda was to “reset” relations between the two nations.

As a sign of reconciliation, Kremlin officials signaled they will formalize plans this week to allow the U.S. to use Russian airspace to reach forces in Afghanistan. That and other concessions could be announced at a news conference today after meetings between Obama and Medvedev and before a dinner with their wives.

Even as they sounded a positive note, U.S. officials were leaving room for the possibility that an agreement wouldn’t be reached on a replacement to the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty — or “New Start” — before year’s end.

That wouldn’t be a tragedy, Samore said, making an extension sound like a small matter.

The “most ideal situation” would be to complete the treaty this year, he said. But if that doesn’t happen, he said, “we’ll have to look at arrangements to continue some of the inspection provisions, keep them enforced on a provisional basis.”

CHICAGO, Patrick Cudahy — Fire crews battled a large blaze at a meatpacking plant in a crowded suburb south of Milwaukee on Monday, leading authorities to warn residents within a mile of the plant to evacuate the area because of the threat of toxic fumes.

About 100 firefighters worked through the night and were still fighting the blaze Monday morning at the Patrick Cudahy Inc. plant in Cudahy. No injuries were reported.

Residents living within a mile of the plant were told to evacuate the area because of possible ammonia fumes, Mayor Ryan McCue said. A local school was made available for evacuees and their pets to take shelter.

Rebecca Spencer, who lives about a quarter mile from the plant, left her home with her dog and two cats. She said she wasn’t worried when she saw huge plumes of black smoke because she was confident firefighters would contain the blaze.

Carla Peterson, assistant human resources manager at Patrick Cudahy, said only a few of the company’s roughly 2,000 workers were at the 128-year-old plant when the fire started, and that no one was hurt.

Cudahy Fire Chief Dan Mayer says the fire has been difficult to fight because it is in a confined space.

He says there has been heavy fire, water and smoke damage to the plant.

Robert Mcnamara Dead,Washington Post, which is reporting that Robert McNamara, who served as defense secretary in the Kennedy and Johnson administrations and was one of the top architects of the U.S. war in Vietnam, died Monday. He was 93.

The deeply controversial McNamara, who served as head of the World Bank after stepping down from his Pentagon post at the height of the Vietnam war, died at home in his sleep, the daily reported.

He also had a brief but storied career as an executive at Ford, where as one of the automaker’s “Whiz Kids” he rose rapidly through the ranks, in 1960 becoming its first president outside the Ford family.

Robert Strange McNamara was born in San Francisco June 9, 1916, to Robert James McNamara, a wholesale shoe salesman, and the former Clara Nell Strange, both of British ancestry.

Mr. McNamara married Margaret Craig, a fellow student at the University of California, who died of cancer just before he left the World Bank. They had a son and a daughter.

And in 2004, at age 88, he married his Italian-born sweetheart, Diana Masieri Byfield in Assisi, Italy.

WASHINGTON :Robert S. McNamara, the cerebral secretary of defense who was vilified for prosecuting America’s most controversial war and then devoted himself to helping the world’s poorest nations, died Monday.()

McNamara died at 5:30 a.m. at his home, his wife Diana told The Associated Press. She said he had been in failing health for some time.

For all his healing efforts, McNamara was fundamentally associated with the Vietnam War, “McNamara’s war,” the country’s most disastrous foreign venture, the only American war to end in abject withdrawal rather than victory.

Known as a policymaker with a fixation for statistical analysis, McNamara was recruited to run the Pentagon by President John F. Kennedy in 1961 from the presidency of the Ford Motor Co. He stayed seven years, longer than anyone since the job’s creation in 1947.

His association with Vietnam became intensely personal. Even his son, as a Stanford University student, protested against the war while his father was running it. At Harvard, McNamara once had to flee a student mob through underground utility tunnels. Critics mocked McNamara mercilessly; they made much of the fact that his middle name was “Strange.”

After leaving the Pentagon on the verge of a nervous breakdown, McNamara became president of the World Bank and devoted evangelical energies to the belief that improving life in rural communities in developing countries was a more promising path to peace than the buildup of arms and armies.

A private person, McNamara for many years declined to write his memoirs, to lay out his view of the war and his side in his quarrels with his generals. In the early 1990s he began to open up. He told Time magazine in 1991 that he did not think the bombing of North Vietnam _ the greatest bombing campaign in history up to that time _ would work but he went along with it “because we had to try to prove it would not work, number one, and (because) other people thought it would work.”

Steve Mcnair and Sahel kazemi,Steve McNair and his lady friend, Sahel Kazemi, both found dead Saturday in McNair’s rented condo in Nashville, TN, were killed in an apparent murder suicide.When news of Steve McNair’s death was breaking earlier, there were very few details available, but now that the police have had a chance to investigate further, it appears that McNair and his lady friend, Sahel Kazemi were killed in a murder suicide.The Tennessean is reporting that McNair was found on the sofa in his rented Nashville condo with several gunshot wounds to his head and body. Kazemi was found near him with a single, apparently self-inflicted gunshot to the head. There was also a pistol found next to her body.McNair, a married man, met Kazemi while she was working as a waitress at a restaurantat a few months ago and had been dating up until the time of their deaths.A few days ago, Kazemi was pulled over in a black Cadillac Escalade and was charged for drunk driving as well as refusing to submit to a breath test. McNair was in the vehicle with her. McNair also bailed her out of jail later that day.So far, this situation has all the earmarks of of a love triangle gone bad, but it’s still too early to determine what actually happened.Autopsies will be performed on the bodies of Steve McNair and Sahel Kazemi Sunday and more concrete details will be released by the Coroner and police afterwards.

ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry on Monday said that National Electric Power Regulatory (Nepra) would not be allowed to overcharge electricity rates till conclusion of the hearing of suo moto notice by the Supreme Court of Pakistan.

During the hearing of suo moto notice he said the system could be handed over to private companies if Nepra failed to execute it and provide electricity to masses on cheap rates.

Referring Iran’s stances pertaining to the tackling of power crises, he said “We have the example of Iran before us who maintained its entire system and enabled itself to export the electricity.”

Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry has adjourned the hearing till July 30.
