Colombo: Sri Lanka Slams LTTE Proxies Attempt to Hold Elections, Sri Lanka has reacted strongly to attempts by the LTTE authorities to hold elections to “government crime” among the Tamil diaspora, as called on foreign governments not to allow the separatist activities in its territory.

The elections for the government of the “crime” of Tamil Eelam will be held in April 2010 between the diaspora community “Advisory Committee for Crime Interim Government of Tamil Eelam, had said on Nov. 5.

“If they try to perpetuate the terrorism of the LTTE in the appearance of the various movements over others, this will also be offset by us,” said Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama said.

“No country should allow any host or group meetings that serve a separatist cause in Sri Lanka,” the Minister told the state run Sunday Observer.

“The LTTE is banned in countries like the U.S., where Visuvanathan Rudrakumaran which is said to have taken over the activities of the diaspora to the LTTE, is based”, the newspaper said.

Rudrakumaran, which is called the “coordinator of the group,” said the survey was conducted among the diaspora community to elect members for what they called the “Provisional Government of the Crime of Tamil Eelam (PTGTE).

International terrorism expert and professor at the S Rajaratnam School of International Studies in Singapore, Rohan Gunaratna says the LTTE international wing factions Rudrakumaran heading political affairs of his party.

Gunaratna said the government should establish a robust capability to counter post-threat scenario Prabhakaran said.

KATMANDU Nepal news: Nepal bus accident 12 killed, A bus veered off a remote mountain road and plummeted about 700 feet (200 meters) Sunday in western Nepal, killing at least 12 people and injuring several more, officials said.

The accident occured near Hungasapur village, about 200 miles (320 kilometers) west of Katmandu, and rescue teams were sent to the area, Argakhachi district administrator Balbadra Giri said.

Rescue efforts were complicated because the accident site is in a remote area with no telephones, a few hours drive from the main town in the district. The area has steep cliffs, unpaved roads and no guard rails, Giri said.

Police said the accident killed at least 12 people, and that rescuers would take the several injured people to hospitals in nearby towns and cities.

Traffic accidents are common in Nepal, where roads and vehicles are poorly maintained and morning fog makes visilibity low. Buses in rural areas are enerally overcrowded, often with people traveling on the roof.

WASHINGTON: The US House of Representatives has approved the broadest US health care overhaul in a half-century, handing President Barack Obama a major victory on his top domestic priority.

Obama hailed the “historic vote” and said he was sure of signing the ambitious overhaul in 2009.

“Tonight, in an historic vote, the House of Representatives passed a bill that would finally make real the promise of quality, affordable health care for the American people,” Obama said in a statement savoring the political triumph.

“The United States Senate must follow suit and pass its version of the legislation. I am absolutely confident it will, and I look forward to signing comprehensive health insurance reform into law by the end of the year,” he said.

After hours of bitter debate and an appeal from Obama to “answer the call of history,” lawmakers voted late Saturday 220-215 for a 10-year, trillion-dollar plan to extend health coverage to some 36 million Americans who lack it now.Facts: Health bill

The chamber’s Democrats erupted in loud cheers and triumphant applause the moment the bill had the 218 votes needed for passage, about 11:07 pm (0407 GMT), a happy din that grew deafening when a gavel made it official.

The president had paid a rare visit to Congress to lobby for unity among his Democratic allies and reinforced it with a public speech, but 39 still joined 176 of the chamber’s Republicans in opposition to the proposal.

Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, struggling to pull together the 60 votes needed to ensure passage, has hinted that the chamber may not act until next year.

That would put the issue front-and-center in the 2010 mid-term elections, when one third of the Senate, the entire House of Representatives, and many US governorships are up for grabs.

If, as expected, the two chambers pass rival versions of health care legislation, they will need to thrash out a compromise version and approve it in order to send it to Obama to sign into law.

Final House passage came after a flurry of votes, including a 240-194 vote to sharply tighten restrictions on government monies paying for abortions, seen as critical to cementing support from a group of anti-abortion Democrats.

The House then voted 176-258 to defeat the Republican alternative to the overall plan — with one lone Republican, Representative Timothy Johnson of Illinois, joining the Democrats in opposition.

The United States is the only industrialized democracy that does not ensure that all of its citizens have health care coverage, with an estimated 36 million Americans uninsured.

And Washington spends vastly more on health care — both per person and as a share of national income as measured by Gross Domestic Product — than other industrialized democracies, but with no meaningful edge in quality of care, according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.

The bill would create a government-backed insurance plan, popularly known as a “public option,” to compete with private firms and would end denial of coverage based on preexisting medical problems.

Under the White House-backed bill, Americans would have to buy insurance and most employers would have to offer coverage to their workers — though some small businesses would be exempt and the government would offer subsidies.

Even for this moderate total, India had Ravindra Jadeja and Praveen Kumar to thank, who displayed great gusto to ensure that hosts retained a fighting chance of winning this crucial match and leveling the series.

Earlier, the rebuilding process for the hosts had started with Dhoni and Jadeja putting their heads down when they joined forces at 27/5.

With runs coming at a snails pace, the duo ditched all forms of aggression as they attempted to offer a semblance of respectability to the Indian total.

However, it seemed to be back to square one when Bollinger, re-introduced into the attack for a second spell, trapped Dhoni leg before wicket. Dhoni, who became Bollinger’s third victim, contributed a painstakingly slow 24 runs off 77 balls to India’s cause.

In the same over Harbhajan Singh managed his second consecutive second ball duck as Australians seemed to have tightened the noose on the hosts, before heroics from Kumar and Jadeja gave India some breathing space.

For Australia, Bollinger (5/35) and Johnson (3/39) dealt crucial blows to India while Shane Watson cleaned up the tail to finish with 2/27. Hauritz bowled a tidy 9 over spell conceding just 19 runs.

Meanwhile, India retained the same side that lost the Hyderabad ODI by mere 3 runs.
