Let's start from the beginning. In film school we learned about the entire history of cinema from the camera obscura, the zoetrope, to the first movie cameras.

Eadward Muybridge - Sallie Gardner at a Gallop (1878)

We learned that cinema evolved from the development of multi-shot still photography, capturing life in motion.

Lumière Brothers - The Arrival of a Train (1895)

In one of the very first films, an audience was shown a clip of a train arriving to a train station. The audience had never seen a motion picture before, therefore they reacted as if the train were to crash right through the screen and into the theater.

Georges Méliès - A Trip to the Moon (1902)

Georges Méliès was known for innovating cinema by creating magic on screen. A person could vanish in smoke or their face could be super-imposed as the moon. Theatrical sets were used to take us out of this world, Georges used such techniques as like a true magician.

Along with all this history, I learned to appreciate the language of film learned and mastered by many of the early filmmakers.

F. W. Murnau - Sunrise (1927)

For Example: F. W. Murnau was masterful working with the film language, and establishing themes in spaces. He was known for his classic film Nosferatu (based on Dracula) where he established dark tones for both the city and the unexplored Transylvanian terrain. He established symbolic barriers and threats Similarly he established such themes in his other works including Sunrise,

Vittrio De Sica - The Bicycle Thieves (1948)

The Bicycle Thieves was a film that always touched my heart, the story of a poor father who is unable to support his family. The man is hired to place posters around the city, but the first day on the job his bike is stolen. With his young son they embark on a journey to find the thief who stole their livelihood. The story is a true melodrama honoring the essence of responsibility, manhood, and family.

Now back to the good part!

I studied Scorsese's work throughout college and through my professional career. I watched many of his narrative films, his documentaries on early Italian Cinema, and even watched his first student film.

I always found Scorsese's stories compelling because his narratives were always about characters trying to take control of their world. I felt immersed in his stories because they challenge the notion of responsibility and self-worth.

For Example: In Taxi Driver, a Vietnam War veteran Travis Bickle works the night shift as a New York City taxi driver. Becoming increasingly isolated, he violently lashes out at the perceived decadence and filth of the city. [source]

Or how about in The Departed, the very first line of the film states, "I don't want to be a product of my environment, I want my environment to be a product of me." It is very clearly emphasized that in both films the narrative is all about individuals taking control of your own worlds. I like that.

In his documentary My Voyage to Italy, Scorsese shared his passion for cinema, and how as a youth, he was unable to join the other kids in sports because of his asthma, so instead he spent much of his time in the theater watching films. Through isolation and entrancement by the glowing projections, he grew a love for cinema.

Scorsese watched the works of many Italian and American Western Directors. He expressed his passion for drama, images, and pacing.

In college, I was lucky to have an Italian film professor who screened an assortment of early films by Antonioni, Fellini, and De Sica. Dramas about impoverished or damaged men looking to survive and sometimes find love within their chaotic worlds. Beautiful narratives and exceptional melodramas. I learned their language of cinema and also transitioned into the works of Leone (Once Upon a Time in the West, Once Upon a Time in America) To me, the early Italian filmmakers paved the road for many of the great filmmakers today.

Now bringing it back home, how does this all have anything to do anything with Hugo?

Well, as much as I personally learned from film school, Scorsese absorbed much more through his many years of work and education. At the minimum I can understand the roots of his inspiration and appreciate the passion and culture he puts into his work.

Hugo is a fantastic film about a 12-year-old orphan who lives in the walls of a Paris train station in 1930 and a mystery involving the boy, his late father and a robot [source]. The narrative is all about broken people and machines and how each character is important to work for the true magic to come to life. Those characters include an old toy shop owner who is embittered and unwilling to recall his past life, a station inspector who hungers for romance but cannot change his strict ways, and finally a young boy unwilling to open himself up to the world. Now along with this major theme, the film has a lot to do with uncovering magic, the magic of bringing toys to life, the magic of vision, and the magic of storytelling.

I don't want to spoil any of the film for you, but I must say Martin Scorsese successfully shares his vision, passion, and inspiration for film-making. He takes what is old and makes it new with 3D Cinema.

Watch closely as he incorporates themes of early cinema. Think about what he does with his images, his stories, the structure of his narratives. Think about his major theme of "being responsible for yourself and taking control of your world," and think about how he manipulates the entire experience utilizing 3D Technology.

I would love to write more about my thoughts and inspirations about Scorsese, and hope to soon, but hopefully this gives you a taste of why Scorsese is such an inspiration to directors like myself.

I suppose to put a cherry on top, maybe more so for myself, but I used to work for StereoGraphics, the company that became RealD, and I learned to appreciate the work of the artists to build complex 3D images, many times from 2D stills. Therefore, cheers to Scorsese, congrats, and I look forward to seeing many more of your films.

To end. The reason why I loved the film so much was because Scorsese took everything I knew and loved about cinema and brought it to life in Hugo. What a fantastic film!

Best,

Let's start off this way I don't know much about composing, however I am very curious, here is my brief anecdote.

So I was hanging out with my friend George the other day, he's a composer, and I was asking him details on how to produce an orchestral music piece with a small crew utilizing pre-recorded digital tracks.

I had spoken with a few friends about this because I was curious to see what are some options for independent filmmakers with huge aspirations to build orchestral music tracks.

One of my friends said that I should just utilize sound libraries and then get a good music editor to edit the instruments to provide a human touch, the other friend said compose with the libraries and add additional recordings with actual people, my mode of thought originally was to record several people and layer their performance.

Anyway, I took what my friend George had to say very serious. He said that I can adapt human recordings and add a reverb filter that would provide the same resonance and echo as Carnegie Hall. Wow, really?

He said that sound engineers actually visited each of the major performance halls and set-up mics around the room, then shot a starting pistol to record the echo for timing and resonance. Hrm.. sounds scientific, therefore it must be good!

So the reason why I came up with this post is because I tried searching on google and youtube for it, I wanted to know if this was indeed true. Finally after searching and searching I came across Sony Sound Forge v8, I know it's probably not the only program, but it's a place to start. The technology is called "Convolution Reverb".

I'm excited for this new technology as it is supposed to give a very natural reverb and feel to the instrumentals/vocals.

Has anyone used this before? I'm interested in know how it sounds.

Oooh..

Life is the experience of sharing an experience, that is to say life is an experience, and that experience depends upon how you share with society. Nice.

Well I was thinking about my career a few days after COMPLETING PRINCIPAL PHOTOGRAPHY for "Lil Tokyo Reporter" and I realized something amazing.

Filmmaking as a passion and a career is possible. That is not to say I didn't believe that before, it is to say that my hard dedicated work added up to a wonderful shoot. I must remind myself everyday that I was truly blessed to have the support of a wonderful team and community, as it was such a wonderful opportunity.

Here are a few notes that helped me survive the experience:

1) Always Be Grateful. Do your best to make sure everyone on your set is greeted when they arrive and when they leave. Thank them every chance you get because they are the one's sweating behind the scenes when you get to yell action.

2) Be prepared (Randy Pausch). Nothing yells new director more than a director that doesn't know what he wants. Make sure you know what you're doing, be aware of the people, the equipment, your surroundings, and etiquette. Pre-Plan, Plan, and get to set early. Absorb the space, block out your space, and follow proper protocol. Also know, everyone is on set to help you, let them.

3) Communicate. Oh yes, it is so very important to communicate, make sure everyone who needs to know, knows what your thinking and what your plans are. It will make the whole production flow better. If you have the opportunity to review notes with your 1st AD and DP before the next day of shooting, that is great. What is in your mind needs to be expressed or you will not get what you want.

4) Stick to Your Guns. When you want something, share it and let it be understood. You have a vision for the film, there is a reason why you are directly, go with it. Also, be willing to take notes from others, because many times they may provide a "better" way to proceed with the scene.

5) Be the Glue. Be the glue that keeps everyone together. Keep your cool. Really, keep your cool. Everyone on set looks to you as a reference point, make sure you retain positivity and celebrate the fact that you are making a movie. Some scenes may be difficult, so think of it as a learning experience. Remember, you've jumped into shark infested waters, just don't let yourself bleed, also be glad they don't have laser on their heads.

[Edit]
And don't forget, if possible, be the first one on set and the last one to leave.

Anyway, these are just some quick notes, I hope you find them helpful. I feel it takes a balanced mind and determined persona to successfully run a set, and the experience each time is extremely humbling and exciting.

I think it's funny, you know, life. Everything is so unexpected and that each of us experience events that make us struggle, that challenge us to be even better people. I must say my past experiences have not been perfect, far from it, but I have learned recently over this past year that being honest with yourself and your own needs will make you the most successful person you can be.

I suppose this is not in the sense of making money, unless that is your personal life goal, but rather to do what you feel is important to you. I come from the background in believing in community and their ability to support their own. Everyone had good intentions.

Over the past 6-7 years I've pursued my film career and have grown. I've gone through multiple evolutions of my plans, but have managed to be consistently improving myself. I suppose the biggest challenge and worry for a filmmaker or any artist is how to survive, and how is everything supposed to work out?

We've all heard about the starving artist, but when you think about it, it's perplexing that I have survived 6-7 years doing what I love. Yes, I did live at home for a period, yes I did couch surf, but how is it that it is possible that I do have these options and still be able to do what I love. Perhaps it is the fact that those around me do believe in my career, believe in my energy, and my goals.

I feel there is an unwritten truth in this world that if you are able to inspire people with what you do and live life for a greater purpose, people will come support you as your strive to reach your goals. My grandfather used to say, "'The Foundation For Happiness Is Helping People' and that when other people are happy, I feel happy too."

My grandfather was ultimate role model and he was able to do great things not only for our family, but our community. I feel community is not unity by race or economic status, but it's about humanity and our universal desire to improve and protect the quality of life for those around you.

I find challenges and pitfalls that I must overcome opportunities to strengthen my character as a role model and a person. I like knowing that not everything is perfect around me because it gives me goals on a daily basis to reach, or make progress on.

With all of this said, I have learned, or more so, am learning that if I can forgo my superficial needs, forgo immediacy to horde successful or images of success, and live life with my mission to share my narratives, I will be able to accomplish much more than I could have ever imagined. To be able to share my success with those around me and establish a community that will ensure the future projects will come to fruition.

Anyway, these are my thoughts as of late. I look forward to a bright future.

Best,
Jeffrey

PS: Remember this world is full of limitless opportunity.

Over this past year I've learned to truly appreciate my contributions as an individual and also to prioritize my own needs as a professional filmmaker. I've had the great opportunity to work at a television station, collaborate with other talented filmmakers, and to pace myself (sorta).

Last year was very much a learning year, a year that I struggled as a professional and kept myself away from the world. I was in a cocoon waiting to morph into a greater being. I learned to flap my wings slowly, but efficiently. I crashed a few times in the process, but appreciate the learning experience.

I've tried to be a better person by surrounding myself with those who have positive energy. To me, it is extremely important, as I can get impatient with people don't believe in me. Maybe I'm spoiled, but I use their negative energy to propel myself further along my path.

I've learned to take my life into my own hands, in such a way that I've become more financially independent. I'm learning to invest better, read more, and exercise. I feel proud of myself most everyday because I am able to look at myself in the mirror and tell myself that it is my responsibility to be a role model.

I've grown to be much more responsible and patient. I've learned to listen... more... I've also learned to be more awkward.

I suppose life has limitless potential in making itself interesting, which is why I enjoy it so much. About three hours from now I will depart on a wonderful journey, a journey that I've dreamt about since college to the "Old Peak" of Peru.

I'm excited, scared, and optimistic. I know it will be a difficult trek, and it will be my first time traveling internationally all on my own. But I feel this opportunity will help me grow, clear my mind and provide a sense of pride in my ability to pursue my passions independently, if necessary.

I suppose if I were to end on one thought, one thought that has helped me grow throughout this past year... it would be "Never let yourself get comfortable."

Yes... never let yourself get comfortable because if you do you...

Lose incentive to move forward
Lose momentum
Lose out on creating more products
Lose out on meeting new people and gaining inspirational experiences

In short, a person will miss out on the world once they "settle." Settling is not something that should happen to those who are and/or think young.

Anyway, sorry for all of this rambling, it's 3AM and I've been working since Sunday morning. =]

I love life!

Best,

In life you will find a lot of naysayers that come across your path, a lot of people who won't believe you can accomplish your goals, they feel the best time spent is spending time being "realistic." I don't believe in reality because the idea of reality is only for those who get stopped in their tracks.

Generally for me, I think about the overall picture for a project, I want to make it the best I can, and when I'm determined everything falls into place. For many of my projects I rush the deadlines, sometimes time is limited, but since I learned to be self-sufficient and know a multitude of techniques and talents I can push through and it's not something that wears me out, it's simply knowing that I have a responsibility to fill in for any job that must be done quickly and efficiently. That's not to say I can do it alone, in fact it's really about working with a team and planning, but knowing if anything slows or falls through, I can be there to pick up the slack.

I feel that leadership needs those qualities, and leader who can not only tell everyone what to do, but show them, help others visualize the images and the path of the project. I definitely know that I have a lot to learn, which I am excited about and for that reason I am up at 3AM on a Monday morning working.

I'm content, I'm happy, I love my life because I get to do what I love and it truly fuels my energy and makes me feel valuable as I am able to work with such a talented team of individuals. I pride myself and persistence because I know it's something that movers & shakers need in them, to build that success, that ideal scenario to take life by its horns.

In short, there is a huge responsibility for an amazing leader to be familiar with all aspects of a production, to be able to work delicately while putting great force into every effort. There also is a need to know other's limitations and to truly respect their contributions. I know I will succeed because I live success.

Anyway, I look forward to continue building this production bigger and bigger, it has grown legs out where I didn't even know legs could grow (hah). But seriously, I'm very lucky, not in the sense that the events in life were out of my control, but rather life has decide to conspire with me to live out my dreams.

We will be releasing a marketing campaign for my film "Lil Tokyo Reporter," at the beginning of May, look out for it!

I find it interesting that back in 1870 it was okay to kidnap little Chinese boys and bring them back to live in the countryside of Marin County. The same county I grew up in over one hundred years later.

As the story goes, back in 1870 debonair man by the name Neil McIsaac kidnapped an "orphan" Chinese boy from San Francisco, then had him grow up as the only Chinese person in Nicasio. Later on he worked as a chef at the local hotel and was always liked by the young children. And I guess naturally in his blood he loved gambling.

Everything has been crazy busy and simply emotionally exhausting. Don't get me wrong, I'm extremely excited for the future and everything that has been happening, I'm just a bit anxious for the future.

Over the past couple days I've been spending some time on my documentary, that is after spending a week or so in Los Angeles prepping my narrative film. I haven't been the most efficient with my time when I got home, mostly distracted, mostly curious to see what all my friends are doing, mostly wanting something more out of my time.

I think I know what I'm missing, which is an actual social life. I haven't really gone out with a crew of my friends to do something fun for awhile, and if it has, it was only for a short period. I know everyone is busy and everyone is doing their own thing, but seriously, there needs to be a balance.

I'm an extrovert at heart, so it fuels me when I get to see my friends, but I am also a work-a-holic. I'm into knowing that I'm being efficient, so I can't sit idly too long without feeling like I'm not doing work.

With that, let me explain...I came home on Wednesday and got back to work, spent some time on facebook catching up with the world, then staying up till 4am editing. Then I did the same thing for the past 2 days.

There is a reason why facebook is attractive and that is because it gives individuals a semblance of a social life from the comfort of their own home. It's kinda sad to think about, to think about these interactions suiting my needs, which it truly doesn't.

So, I'll be moving down to LA sometime around.. say April 23rd because I'm beginning full-fledged pre-production on my narrative film. Yay! Which means I'll have more flexibility.

Let me tell you, living at home has its perks, but there is a certain level of independence that is lacking when you stay too close to the nest. I don't like that, I like taking care of myself, and I need that sense of independence.

I suppose the root of all this anxiety lies within my need to be successful. I don't like feeling second rate, I think I've spent most of my life simply fighting this same fight. I like knowing that I have control over my situations and I like knowing that people care that I care about success. In short, I need my crew.

My crew over years has consistently centered itself is Los Angeles, the guys I go out with, the people I can just kick it with, those who are able to be spontaneous and young. That's my crew.

I'm excited to be moving down again and I'll be living in Socal till about August, then .. we'll see.

But yeah, anyway for all those who want to kick it, let me know =] I'll be making more social time.

Best,
I was just doing some research since I'm currently working on a documentary on a 100 year-old Chinese Immigrant who came to America when he was 9 years old. I wanted to connect some historical photographs and images of why Chinese came to America and began research on the building of the Transcontinental Railroad. In the process I uncovered/rediscovered the "Rock Springs Massacre," a horrid event that occurred due to racial tensions between the Caucasian and Chinese railroad workers.

Anyway, read about it.. it's pretty nuts..

Life has been moving at the speed of light over the past couple months, it's ridiculous. So much has been going on with the film, "Lil Tokyo Reporter." The process has not only let me grow drastically as a filmmaker, but has helped me evaluate my path and track my progress. I simply never knew that a good story could inspire so many people.

If you're curious to see the progress on the film, wait a beat because we'll be releasing a promotional trailer soon, plus a kick starter campaign!

===
Today I watched an animated film called The Illusionist, which was a fantastic narrative about a magician whose career path is a metaphor for life. We watch him as he travels from town to town to make a living. He meets characters from all different classes and cultures: Irish, Scottish, English, the rich and the poor. He even inspires a young girl to travel with him to the big city where he treats her to all that modernity has to offer. He fuels her dream to be like all the other beautiful women in the city, at the cost of his career. He finds himself needing to make more and more money to provide her with the quality of life she desires, but he learns he cannot, not with his career, not at his age. The story is about a man who does his best to shield the innocent from the true realities of life. It was excellent.

==
In the past week or so I've been in SF, LA, Texas, and Sacramento. It's been crazy, but I like it. I guess one thing that I've been spending some time thinking about it how easy it is for one to feel like they need to wait on things before they can pursue their goals. Ultimately, I want to be in New York, I have this huge craving, this itch, this need to be there, to tell the stories. So I figure, how will I get there, how will I maximize my potential in my career, and how will I properly establish my plan to succeed. First things first though, I'll be doing my best work now, and once I complete it, I'll be ready to head over.

Thinking about it, I suppose it's not all that difficult, it's more so about finding the right people to help me get there, heck, a flight to New York is only a couple days worth of work, sometimes less. Living there could potentially at minimal cost. Anyway, I think I have an idea, I'll keep it secret for now.

I hope you all are doing well =]

I've been keeping REALLY busy these days, like enough that I barely can find time for the weekend, for "me time", just to rest and relax.

I'm enjoying myself, I've been accomplishing a lot and sewing a lot of seeds toward my success as a filmmaker. I like knowing that I have many routes waiting for me, as I speed down my career path.

I'm realizing more and more that work isn't necessarily hard, it's just a lot of time, and once that time is committed great products end up resulting, or being the result of the "lot of time" and "consistent work."

This upcoming weekend I'll be going back down to LA meeting up about my film and planning. I'll also be able to watch a Lakers Game LIVE! So COOL!

Anyway, to tease you all a bit more...

Official Project Photos to be released soon!

As things are picking up for The Little Tokyo Reporter Film, I've been constantly evaluating my talents and how I may improve myself and best prepare for the upcoming shoot in July.

Today I watched Once Upon A Time in America, the masterpiece by Sergio Leone. I was so very impressed, it was magical watching the narrative, his dream come to life. As it seemed, it was Leone's ultimate goal to produce that film, and he was successful in sharing the story of manhood, romance, and crime for the Jewish American community in New York.

For me, I enjoy watching any period piece I can get my hands on, I'm always curious how the director is able to not only direct his actors, but manipulate a set to truly sell the idea and feel of the period. It is important to me because I need to do the same, I need to master those skills, and I know I will.

My friend asked me today, "When you wake up in the morning is it hard for you to work?" I told him that I'm energized everyday when I work on this film project and stories about Angel Island. The stories inspire me because I bring the lives of these heroes to life.

For this upcoming film, within the upcoming months, I feel I will be reading many books, watching and analyzing many films, and truly imagining the film with ample time before the shoot.

I am amazed how quickly we have crewed up for this project, the team is constantly expanding and we have nearly limitless support from the community, all I need to do now is the hard work, making sure all the pieces come together the way I imagined, and add further depth to the message I wish to share.

It's very exciting to be doing the work I do, and I love it.

Best,

I feel I learned a lot in just the past few months about perseverance and determination. Not all things that I planned for happened the way I liked, but everything seems to be coming together fine. I was talking to one of my friends, she's the type of girl who REALLY knows what she wants, or at least thinks she does. And the fact that she has thought about what she wants in life. She said she wants a guy who will get a graduate degree from a top university, makes over $100k, family oriented, and likes dogs, even though she's never had one. So it got me thinking about it too. Some might find her particular notions snobby, but I found it refreshing... why?

Everything in life is about keeping positive energy and moving closer to your goals, knowing exactly what you want out of your career and partners is good. It's like imagining the finishing line when you're only 25% of the way there, or thinking about how great that warm shower will be after a cold day in the snow. It's like that.

Some famous actresses once said that in order to be happy with your partner, you should be on the same level. I agree with her, let me explain what it means.

I know it may seem classist and silly, but hear it out. So if you were studying to become an amazing doctor, you've been going through YEARS AND YEARS of school to become a doctor because you truly care about helping people. Now that you're ready to settle down, you meet Person A, Person A is a genuinely nice person, but has mediocre dreams for him/herself. Person A accepts your shortcomings, but lacks foresight for your career and in fact gets jealous of your peers. Okay, it does sound a little extreme.

Think about it this way, TO BE MOST SUCCESSFUL, you want someone who will fuel you to become a better person, you want someone who believes in you because they believe in themselves. Your partner needs to be complimentary to you, have had their own experiences, and be someone you can grow within instead of tugging along for the ride. No the person doesn't need a Masters or PHD, but they sure need the same type of drive as you.

For example, you can want to drive a Mercedes SL with a body kit, keyless entry, and a hardtop, but at the end of the day you end up with the baseline SL or an E-Class. If you think about it at least you're not driving a Hyundai when you wished to drive a nice German car. You aim for the moon and land amongst the stars. That is my opinion.

However, in different phases in life you will meet or desire different people. Say you're 40 years old, you'll probably just want someone who is into family or when you're 60, potentially a person who enjoys traveling. But when in youth, it's possible to find a person you'll want to spend the rest of your life with, that will age with you the way you would and mesh well with your plans, such is the beauty.

So in that age of growth and planning for my own life, I look at it think about what I need to do next, what will the next step be for me to reach my goals and how will I be able to find a balance of establishing myself and my career. I quantify and think about what qualities I see in partners, friends, and companions, and how we all can help each other reach our goals.

I think about my personal commitments and time, and do my best to LEARN from every experience, even if the task is menial, before preparing for another leap toward my goals. I try to realize ahead of time what commitments are "dead ends" and how I can best advance myself. I like to do things that will challenge my spirit to work even harder, I enjoy the struggle and find it refreshing when I can look back at the products I've created. One thing about me is that I'm not scared, in fact I don't allow fright to affect me.

I've met people who provide bad energy, who doubt my dreams and passions, and I learn to block out their statements and push forward, because I believe in myself. I cannot trust or respect those that desire to put me down because they can't accomplish their own goals.

I plan, I plan, I plan, I come up with back-up plans, multiple solutions, quick solutions, and outlets. I do not take no for an answer, I find a way to get what I want because I am determined to succeed.

How do you get what you want?

You live for it, and don't forget what will help you get there. Don't distract yourself with mediocrity, glamour, a quick buck, or an easy way out. There is no EASY way, because taking serious time and energy to prepare builds toward your own success. No one will help you get what you want until you know yourself what you want, what your dream is, what you need, and what you crave.

If you want to succeed, begin now, set deadlines, rally support, thank them, and move forward.

Best,

So yeah, did the New Years Parade!

My body is sore, but my soul is juiced.

Went to practice on Friday, learned the routine for our "Grand Stand" performance. Even though I was out of practice, I managed to keep up as the team mastered the routine in two hours.

12 of my Southern Young Tigers (SYT) members made it to Norcal, they were trained by Uncle Wilson to learn how to play with the crowd as they performed on the streets.

On the day of the parade it was raining, and we're talking about the worst rain in the past 15 years type of rain. We were afraid we wouldn't get to perform, but we prepared what we needed, put a tarp up on the truck and headed straight into the storm.

When we arrived on Market Street we quickly placed our equipment aside and prepped even more.

Just as the parade began the rain let up!!!!!

We charged down the street, full force and full of energy.

The audience cheered as all the lions captured their attention.

As we made our way to the "Grand Stand Performance," adrenaline rushed through my system. We stood poised before the stage at Macy's Union Square. The drum rolls began...

Tak-da tak-tak-tak!

The lions moved with fierce energy as they flew gracefully through the air. Our movements on point, our feet grounded.

We nailed all the stunts!

The CROWD CHEERED!

After the performance finished we went out for a large banquet at China First. It seemed everyone had a great time, including the new members of SYT that I had previously not met. I am so proud of them!

Even though the rain was coming down and many of us were new or out of practice, the experience was amazing. My body is sore, but my soul is juiced. Worth it!~

Best,

So.. Happy Lunar New Year.. again!

This weekend is the Chinese New Years Parade, and I'm excited to announce that I will be performing lion dance down Market Street San Francisco.

Back in 2004, when I was trying to find my identity in college, I decided to start a Lion Dance Team. Within a few months the team grew to 5-7 members, and over a two years period the team flourished. Today the team still exists, however most of the members don't know me and I don't know them.
But what surprises me is that they will be bringing up 15 members to participate in the parade! So I am excited to meet each and every one of them!

Anyway, for me lion dance has always been a part of my cultural identity, I can't remember when I wasn't doing lion dance. It's something that calms me and helps me feel in control. I haven't performed in over two years, and I would like to feel that energy once again.

It's one of the many things I enjoy in life.

Show me your moves!

Best,

I just saw the movie, The King's Speech, it was epic-ly wonderful!

The narrative is about King George VI who struggles to overcome his speech impediment. A story about growth and self-confidence, and the value of realizing that one's personal sacrifice.

Beyond that it got me thinking about London and the UK. I have really bad wanderlust, I want to see more of the world and I want to work everywhere and do everything. However, I know where I need to be to do what I want to do.

I was listening to this Geico Commercial the other day, and the announcer said, "Can Geico save you 15% or more on car insurance... does a rolling stone collect no moss?"

The commercial provides two rhetorical questions, that intend to support Geico as a company. EX: Yes, Geico can save you 15% or more on car insurance because a rolling stone does not collect moss.

Anyway, so I got curious and thought about that statement. Often times people use the saying, "A Rolling Stone Gathers No Moss," to refer to an individual who works hard and quickly moves forward, the moss representative an unnecessary stagnant growth.

I wikipedia'd it. haha..

They say the phrase is from the 16th Century, originally meant to derive the idea that an individual who stays in one location, dedicates his time, builds great things.

However, in modern culture then entire phrase has been flopping, signifying moss as a negative attribution.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_rolling_stone_gathers_no_moss

it's true, according to Mythbusters "A Rolling Stone Gather's No Moss."

So what can we take from each of these statements, is moss good or bad, or can we always collect moss. Should we be rolling where other stones have not been, then find an appropriate niche for the moss to flourish. Is moss simply a metaphor for building a business, family, or a kingdom?

Well, me with my wanderlust attitude, I know have to be stay tame because I have stories and culture to share here in America, California and New York. I need to have patience and build up a rich history and projects. When I'm not working I want to travel, explore the world, but always have a home to return to.

I would want to be in London, just because I know there is a whole new world to explore and people to meet, just as living in any other country, but at the same time, can I live these experiences over shorter periods of visits, or even while I'm working.

I can't say I really know yes, but I know that I just need to push forward and direct myself toward my goals and persevere, because that's how it is right?

Grow constantly, build self-confidence, and make sacrifices to succeed.

Thanks for reading my ramblings =]

Best,
This year I am a believer, this year has been excellent and I am so proud of what I am accomplishing each day. My talent is evolving quickly while my wisdom builds deep.
I'm happy that I have truly taken time to develop myself because every step I take will move me closer toward my goals. How lucky can one be, to always be learning and always be thinking about the next step that will help improve my opportunities.
Mediocracy is too easy take part in, talking talking talking about dreams that never come to fruition. Sometimes separating yourself from the crowd really builds character and success.

Be forward-thinking, be active, and know what you want, so you can make life work for you.

Best,

Rose Petal

I just watched American Beauty, no it's not my first time, but it is my first serious time watching it.

Wow, it was done very well and just layered perfectly.

If you've ever met a person who is in a transitory state in life, escaping the symbolic prisons established by themselves and within society... this is the movie for them.

Honestly, it's all about that, and it's also about simply living life, it's beautiful.

Alright, vague yes.

So the story is about this guy who is going through his midlife crisis, he's stuck at a dead end job and he finds himself looking to be his own man again. He starts working out, smoking pot, and quitting his job for something much more simple. The hook is that the catalyst to his change is his attraction to his young daughter's best friend, a girl who is seemingly wild, and reflective of a youth that our main character once enjoyed.

When this movie first came out, I was scared to watch it. I was like a jaded Asian kid and watching it would be like watching pornography because of the taboo subjects of pedophilia and sex.

The story has nothing to do with those subjects, in fact it's about people trying to find acceptance and prove that they are worthy. Our main character needs to prove to himself that he is independently strong, just like his wife who acts as the bread winner for the household. The daughter, she is looking to become her own woman and discover her sexuality, to evolve into adulthood, while the best friend wants to flaunt her lack of perfection.

There are many characters in the film and they all have issues with their identities, all lacking clarity on the purpose of life, to appreciate the world and all the beauty it has to offer.

Anyway, watch the film if you haven't already. I felt it would be nice to watch after having walked around the idea since its release, as well as it being a film that is often referred to in my many scriptwriting books.

I hope all is well!

Best,
This weekend was great!

I went down to LA to update the Little Tokyo Historical Society on the film that is being produced. They really enjoy our teams presentation and well.. they showed their support in all ways possible.

The following day I met with one of my mentors and he discussed with me what steps I should be aware of as I proceed with the production of the film. We also signed up a KEY player.
Vague... yes. Outlook... amazing!
