Women's Voices at Cleveland Public Theatre

Established in 1999, the Women's Voices Project is a collaboration between Cleveland Public Theatre and the Elyria YWCA's Women's Campus Project. Women's Voices connects Campus Project residents with the tools of creative expression to help them achieve independent living and recover from domestic violence, addiction, and other adversities.

Every year new residents create an evening-length presentation in which participants read and perform original stories and poetry based on their own life experiences. The work is annually presented to audiences at Cleveland Public Theatre and the Elyria YWCA, and then taken on tour to area shelters, recovery centers and prisons.

Participants of the Women's Voices Project find empowerment through writing and public speaking, inspiring the community with the courage to speak their truth.

STEP engages inner-city teens in a rigorous and fun theatrical journey, focusing on excellence in performance, play creation, writing, and production. Since its beginning in 1995, STEP has received multiple awards and recognitions including those from the City of Cleveland, The President's Committee on the Arts and the Humanities, and the National Endowment for the Arts. Reviewing STEP for Cool Cleveland, Linda Eisenstein writes, "a program that blows away preconceptions of 'educational' or 'outreach' theatre...The results are riveting and inspirational."

Tanya Barfield’s BLUE DOOR is an exuberantly theatrical work about the black male experience in America and will resonate with anyone who has ever struggled to live with – or escape – the past.

Liking the textured layers and the beehive activity within I took this photograph in haste hoping to keep my subjects unaware. After a hand gesture unseen by me but captured digitally and viewed later, patrons quickly went back to their world. Willfully accepting to ignore the photographer at the window as I exposed this frame.

Teaching the history of Photography has opened my eyes to the many genres that photographers have explored over the years, street photography's inception started with the increase in film speed and decrease in camera size and the invention of the SLR. Beauty shops with honey bee like activity emanating from within and Bridal Shop mannequins seemingly if not desperately looking for a chance to escape.
