I'm currently reading Negro Digest magazine. Founded in 1943, Negro Digest (later Black World) was the publication that launched Johnson Publishing. During the most turbulent years of the civil rights movement, Negro Digest/Black World served as a critical vehicle for political thought for supporters of the movement.
By Justin Baeder on February 2, 2011 1:08 AM

If you were worried that we're running out of proposals to fix education by taking it out of the hands of educators, rest easy. Washington House Bill 1593 would establish alternative routes to certification for principals, purportedly to address the shortage of qualified school leaders. However, a quick read of the bill reveals that it would place managers from other fields in principal positions with no required teaching experience.

While I am sympathetic to the logic that leadership in other sectors should translate to successful leadership in education, experience does not bear this out. Over and over again, I have seen non-educators who work in education make bad decisions because of their lack of teaching experience. These decisions have real consequences for schools, and they create more work for everyone else in the system. Perhaps this is unavoidable, since we need qualified professionals in a variety of disciplines—such as accounting and architecture—to support the work of schools, and these professionals may or may not have a teaching background."

However, if non-educators are allowed to become principals, this problem will grow a hundredfold. The work of the principal is key in so many ways to the success of teachers and students. If people without teaching experience are allowed to become principals, the essence of this contribution—a deep knowledge of what contributes to excellent teaching and learning—will disappear

I taught for four years before pursuing a position in school administration (3 years is currently the minimum), and frankly, I'd be a better principal today if I'd spent more time in the classroom before moving into administration. Principals are expected to be instructional leaders, and should therefore be master teachers before entering school leadership. In this era of reform, principals are under increasing accountability to ensure the quality of teaching and learning in their schools, and this requires firsthand knowledge of what quality teaching entails.

The last thing we need in our schools is strong, confident leaders who have no idea what they are doing. Success in the business sector could translate to success in school leadership, but not without teaching experience. If we need to increase the supply of quality school leaders, we should start by funding the State Leadership Internship Grant program, or better yet, creating a residency program that will pay master teachers to obtain their principal certification.

But non-teachers hiring, leading, supporting, and evaluating teachers? No thanks

Each household member's Go Bag should be packed in a sturdy, easy-to-carry container such as a backpack or suitcase on wheels. A Go Bag should be easily accessible if you have to leave your home in a hurry. Make sure it is ready to go at all times of the year. Your Go Bag should contain:

Copies of your important documents in a waterproof and portable container (insurance cards, photo IDs, proof of address, etc.)

Extra set of car and house keys

Credit and ATM cards and cash (especially in small denominations). The New York City Office of Emergency Management recommends you keep at least $50-$100 on hand.

Bottled water and non-perishable food such as energy or granola bars

Flashlight, battery-operated AM/FM radio and extra batteries. You can also buy wind-up radios that do not require batteries at retail stores.

Medication and other essential personal items. Be sure to refill medications before they expire. Keep a list of the medications each member of your household takes, why they take them, and their dosages.

Managing challenging behaviors of loved ones with developmental disabilities can be one of the most stressful aspects of parenting. This free workshop will focus on providing families with practical strategies that they can use at home. Preventive, alternative skill-building, reinforcement and desensitization strategies will all be addressed. Research has supported the use of these approaches for a wide range of challenging behaviors in both children and adults. Workshop participants will leave with a greater understanding of why challenging behaviors may occur and how families can successfully intervene at home.

Light refreshments will be served.
Among the pitches are those focusing on some of the more memorable and eccentric GOP policy proclamations of the past few months.
Both the Department of Education (DOE) and New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) charge fees for use of their facilities. Last spring, DOE adopted a new regulation, Chancellor’s Regulation D-180, regarding the Extended use of School Buildings. This regulation establishes the procedures for organizations and individuals to follow in order to use NYC public school buildings outside normal school hours and on days when school is not in session, including weekends and holidays. The regulation supercedes policies previously articulated in the Standard Operating Procedures Manual (SOPM) and introduces changes in DOE’s policies and fee structure which may impact accessibility of services to children and youth.
Members of the Education; Youth Services and Public Housing Committees would like to hear from the public on this subject.
We invite members of Community Education Councils, parents, students, educators, advocates, and all other stakeholders and interested members of the public to testify. at this hearing.
A product recall has been issued by Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft stores for the Bamboo Roll-Up Blinds with Valence. The recalled item was sold between April 2009 and December 2009 and pose a serious strangulation hazard, according to Jo-Ann Fabrics . The notice posted on their site reads:

of the blind and a child’s neck becomes entangled on the

free-standing loop, or if a child places his/her neck between the
lifting loop and the roll-up blind material.
Today, (well technically it was yesterday since I am writing this after midnight.) was Olin Jr's birthday. He was very excited and I was happy because he was so thrilled. He reached another milestone in his life- his eighteenth birthday. He was happy to have graduated high school after four long, stressful years and now considers himself a free man. He is registering for college next Spring but wants to get some freedom from books for the Fall. Finally he gets to "come and go as a young man should without parents making so many decisions for him." Jr. also realizes the world will treat him differently now that he is eighteen and is considered an adult. He cannot do silly things and get away with it because he is 'underage' - those days are over and that ship has sailed. Instead he is looking forward to driving, getting a car, his own apartment, college, buying lotto and so much more.
Son, here's to many more wonderful years ahead, filled with happiness, health success and prosperity. You have grown into a fine young man and I am very proud of you. Your future looks bright and the world is your oyster.

Words of Wisdom

Remember, "as a man thinketh, so is he" and

He had a blast! We were laughing and telling jokes and then it was time to make it erupt. When it did the look on his face was priceless. Sheer joy and amazement. I love showing him new things and spending time with him. He is so full of joy and wonder of the world and is so keen on making new things or taking things apart to discover how they work. He is a very intelligent child and is always asking inquisitive and indepth questions of which I am supposed to always have the answer. As he gets older I find myself going to the computer with him more frequently saying "Mom is not sure of the answer so let's research that together so we both can learn about it". I find this strategy works well because he gets in the habit of looking up the information instead of guessing or putting aside the question. He was so excited that he decided to write about it on his blog "Tommy's World" at http://tommysworld09.blogspot.com/
Please check it out and leave a comment and subscribe. Show him some love. The blog encourages him to write more.

Everything is just rushed and is being crammed down our throats like a shady pushy salesperson. The media is creating an atmosphere of fear and making the public feel guilty if they don't get the shots because they will be putting their kids at risk or themselves if they don't. They are creating a state of fear in everyone that will result in people rushing out to take the vaccine without really thinking about the ramifications of its use.
You have to weigh both sides of the issue - the pros and the cons. One day my seventeen year old son came home from school greatly upset. He said, "Mom, you have to see this video. Oh my God you will not believe it." He goes straight to the computer and looked it up. It was a Fox news video. I was shock and disturbed myself at seeing it. I just shook my head and gave God thanks. Click on the link below to see what he showed me. Please make your own decisions about the flu shot with the help of your doctor and loved ones. Speak to your doctor and express any concerns before making a decision. Everyone is different but and I've included this video for informational purposes only - it is not intended as medical advice. Leave a comment. Thanks.

Below are the links.
