The book begins where the famous comic strip Yellow Kid starts and goes straight into the American history of comic strips and comic books. The book delves into the Underground with Robert Crumb and the artists and the drug experiments that began with him. Only later does it delve into French and European comics like Tintin, Asterix, and Blueberry, giving high value to Japanese manga giants like Osamu Tezuka and his counterparts. Fred Van Lente has written a wholesome history novel that educates as much as it entertains actually it educates more.

Superheroes have to fight their way through the comic books after their accidental start as a cover pic in Action Comics. How Will Eisner got his legendary stature is wonderfully chronicled. The comic book explosion of the 1940s, the rise of Jack Kirby, how he combined neo-realistic pulp illustration and abstract caricature of newspaper strip cartooning to build his uncanny style suited for the superhero genre. Of course, his path to success wasn't easy; he had his fights and struggles. Meanwhile, the book cleverly mentions Stan Lee and their rivalry. It also explores how new comic book publishers and the shops that serviced them sprang up like mushrooms across Manhattan!

Walt Disney's Disney is a household name today, one of the magnates running the entertainment industry. The book details how it came to this stature, the Pentagon's involvement, and Walt's authoritarian run. After the Second World War ended, superheroes had to retire for a while, and then came Archie comics. Romance was in the air to counter the losses from the war. Just as romance was cooling down, "Crime Does Not Pay" took the spotlight: Biro and Wood were the first to put it in comic form. By 1948, "Crime Does Not Pay" hit a million copies, which was huge for that time. The authorities had to intervene as there were cases of comics imitating crimes.

Charles Moulton, aka William Moulton Marston, the creator of the lie detector test, brought Wonder Woman with his kink of BDSM and love for Greek and Roman mythology. His unconventional family life is detailed, and for a better idea of his life, you can watch "Professor Marston and the Wonder Woman." After Marston, comic books came under the microscope of psychologists, with Dr. Warshaw being one of the prominent psychologists criticizing comic books with his "Seduction of the Innocent." The book also sheds light on the eccentricities of William Maxwell "Bill" Gaines and the new chapter EC Comics took under his leadership. Bill advised Harvey Kurtzman to do something funny as his talent lies there, and that's how "Mad" started.

A committee was formed to investigate the implications and effects of comic books, especially regarding horror, crime, and depictions of sex. Bill Gaines testified, and his arguments were seen in a bad light. The parents and the public backlash, leading to a scheme where returning a comic book would get you a piece of literature in return. The acquired comic books were then burned, reminiscent of Fahrenheit 451. A comic book creator was seen as a child molester. The Comics Magazine Association of America was formed, with Archie's publisher John Goldwater as its president. CMAA almost brought Bill's EC to a close, but Harvey gave him the idea to turn "Mad" into a magazine. This led to the creation of the same "Mad" magazine that influenced generations of comedy writers and stand-ups. CMAA affected some comic book giants and paved the way for others. Disney, which never joined CMAA, flourished with the advent of television.

Superheroes made a comeback after their retirement, and DC bought EC. Due to bad blood between DC and Kirby, Kirby returned to the last place he wanted to be - with Stan Lee at Timely, aka Atlas, aka Marvel Comics. As the superhero trend began to rise, Kirby was back at Marvel. A relatively new artist, Ditko, joined the team, and Stan and the team began working on Fantastic Four, which became a hit! Soon, they created an entire universe of superheroes with Thor, X-Men, Hulk, Spider-Man, Dr. Strange... Regardless of the artist, one name that stood out to readers was Stan Lee; his dialogues were impeccable.

At a time when America was just introduced to the Auteur theory in cinema - the director being the author of his creation - Stan Lee was the Auteur of Marvel Comics. He garnered popularity that is unmatched by any other comic book artist. A lecture by Lee at Bard College drew a bigger audience than former President Eisenhower. European filmmakers heralded his genius, with Alain Resnais asking to collaborate with him on a screenplay. Federico Fellini even visited the Marvel offices. This created a conflict and tension between his collaborators, who were the ignored parts of the Marvel method. Ditko distanced himself from Marvel and Stan based on differences in principle beliefs through direct confrontation with the authority. Kirby's departure was a little low-key, but it brought a halt to the creative department of Marvel Comics.

The inception of Pop Art is nicely chronicled in the book, introducing Professor Hoyt L. Sherman's method and his student Roy Lichtenstein's rise to prominence. The book also touches on the legal case between Disney and the Air Pirates, making readers question copyright infringement in retrospect and as a whole.

Mickey Mouse was quite famous in the French-speaking world, but when the Third Reich conquered Western Europe in the early 1940s, the Germans cut off all American imports. This led to Georges Remi, aka Herge, creating Tintin, which gained popularity and led to the circulation of the comics all over Europe and the world. The publication of Tintin led to fame for Herge, who was even labeled a Nazi, for which he spent a day in a jail cell but was rescued by entrepreneur Raymond LeBlanc. Tintin the magazine debuted in September 26, 1946, and picked up right where Herge left off two years earlier. LeBlanc also secured a deal with Belgium's largest publisher, Casterman, to collect each completed Tintin saga into a single volume to be sold in the book market.

In France, the most successful comics magazine was Pilote, established in 1959, which premiered popular strips like Asterix and Blueberry. U.S. comics didn't dominate the French market after the war due to Cultural Protectionism. France is more open-minded than America in general, but they still have some "Community Standards" when it comes to comics content. Heavy Metal, which started as an outlet for translated European comics in the U.S., gained a wider audience and artists of their own. The book then explains the contrast in treatment of artists in France and America and why a single genre never dominated the comic book markets of France. Moore's rise to fame is well known, but his adulthood struggles are conveyed in the book.

While the book primarily covers American comic books, it acknowledges that Japan is the king of all comics cultures. Japan's affinity for combining words and pictures in their writing, with writing itself being a form of drawing through ideograms, sets them apart. The life and times of manga, gekiga, and anime artist Osamu Tezuka are detailed with great care in the book. Tezuka was influenced by Disney, and Disney was influenced by Tezuka. Many other manga and manga styles inspired American comic books, like Samurai manga inspiring Frank Miller's classic run on Marvel Daredevil. Japan's highest honor is named after Tezuka: the Tezuka Awards.

The book also delves into the business side of comics, explaining the profitability of comic book retail, publishing, and distribution. It covers the changes in the comic book model, the rise and fall of indie comics, and the black and white bust. 'Gattaca' Review: A Timeless Fable of Human Spirit and Genetic Fate

There is something about Gattaca that I haven't forgotten even after years of watching it for the very first time. While I have always been a huge fan of the sci-fi genre, I believe Gattaca also excels when seen outside the constraints of the genre. The film is filled with moments of pure drama that even Shakespeare would have approved.

Directed by Andrew Niccol, Gattaca continues to be a cinematic gem that mostly remains undiscovered even after 28 years of its release. The film has a stellar cast with the likes of Uma Thurman, Ethan Hawke, Jude Law, Ernest Borgnine, and even Gore Vidal in a sly cameo that underlines the film’s philosophical undertow.

What makes Gattaca truly special is that it takes the spine-chilling possibilities of genetic determinism and roots them in an achingly human struggle. It’s not the science fiction gimmicks that linger — it’s the haunting image of Vincent Freeman, a man born “in-valid,” defying the godlike grip of a eugenics-driven society. There is a quiet rebellion in Ethan Hawke’s performance — a refusal to accept the destiny imposed by a petri dish.

In my review of Predestination, I had written about the fascinating echoes of Vincent’s dogged idealism in Ethan Hawke’s other sci-fi roles, despite the fact that the two films are separated by 17 years. Hawke has this uncanny ability to lend his characters a core of vulnerability wrapped in steel — and nowhere is it more evident than in Gattaca.

There is a quote that has stayed with me all these years. The lines are spoken by Vincent:

“You want to know how I did it? This is how I did it, Anton: I never saved anything for the swim back.”

It’s a line that resonates far beyond the realm of the film — an anthem for all of us who have felt ‘less than enough,’ yet dared to outswim the odds. Jude Law, too, is devastatingly good as Jerome Morrow, the fallen star whose genetic perfection ironically imprisons him in despair. The contrast between Vincent and Jerome — one broken by birth, the other broken by expectation — gives the film a tragic, almost Greek dimension.

Niccol’s direction is measured, clinical at times, yet brimming with empathy. The sterile, retro-futuristic production design, the evocative score by Michael Nyman, and the quiet undercurrent of forbidden love between Vincent and Irene (Uma Thurman) — it all comes together to create a world that is both unsettlingly possible and deeply poetic.

Two decades later, Gattaca feels more relevant than ever. In an age of CRISPR gene editing and designer babies, its moral questions grow sharper. Who decides who is worthy? What does it mean to be truly human when perfection can be manufactured in a lab?

Gattaca reminds us that the indomitable human spirit lies not in what we are made of, but in what we choose to become. It’s a film that continues to whisper to us, “Don’t save anything for the swim back.”

A timeless fable for anyone who’s ever dared to dream with flawed DNA. A must-watch.

Shreerupa Mitra is an internationally recognised expert in geopolitics and international cooperation, with a distinguished career spanning policy, academia, and journalism. She currently serves as an advisor to the U.S.-India Strategic Partnership Forum and has held senior roles with the U.S.-India Business Council and the Government of India. A former United Nations journalist based in Geneva, she has reported on critical global developments and peace negotiations. Alongside her policy work, Shreerupa has cultivated a growing presence in cinema, appearing in Goutam Ghose’s Miles to Go, researching the Indo-Italian co-production Parikrama, and performing in the upcoming Indo-Sri Lankan-French feature Turtles Gaze on Spying Stars.

Speaking from Delhi, Shreerupa Mitra shared, “With a co-production treaty in place and growing people-to-people ties, this is a ripe moment for India and Australia to write a new cinematic chapter together,” said Mitra. “I am honoured to join AIFC and look forward to helping shape this creative dialogue into something meaningful, sustainable, and truly global.”

Achala Datar is a Melbourne-based media executive with over 15 years of experience across Indian television, Indian film distribution, and Australian cinema promotion. Currently leading Zee Studios’ operations in Australia, New Zealand, and Fiji, she has played a key role in bringing both mainstream and regional Indian films to diverse audiences and mentoring young media professionals through education networks like INLLEN. With roots in Indian television production and a career that spans Indian film distribution, regional cinema, and grassroots media mentorship in Australia, she brings a deep understanding of both markets.

Achala Datar, reflecting on her journey, added, "It's an honor to join the Australia India Film Council. I believe deeply in the power of film to connect cultures, and I'm eager to help forge new pathways for collaboration and innovation between our thriving industries."

Some filmmakers make movies; a rarer few redefine the possibilities of cinema itself. Shaji N. Karun, who passed away at 73, belonged to that rarefied second category — an artist who carried Malayalam cinema across borders, long before global platforms and hashtags, and deep into the human soul.

With Piravi (1988), his masterful debut, Shaji N. Karun made it clear he wasn't primarily here for applause but for posterity. A masterwork of grief and restrained storytelling, Piravi won the Caméra d'Or at Cannes and played at nearly 70 international festivals — a career opening that most filmmakers can only dream of, but one that Shaji shouldered with quiet humility.

Six years later, Swaham (1994) made history as the last Indian film to compete for the Palme d'Or at Cannes for almost 25 years — a drought broken only recently by All We Imagine As Light. In the interregnum, Swaham remained a quiet north star, its aching silences and raw humanity influencing those who cared to listen.

The accolades followed — seven National Awards, as many Kerala State Awards, the Padma Shri, France’s Ordre des Arts et des Lettres — but Shaji N. Karun wore his honours lightly. His cinema never surrendered to trend or fashion; it remained a solemn act of meditation. With Vanaprastham (1999), starring Mohanlal, he further demonstrated his gift for blending the mythic and the intimate, the personal and the cosmic. The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, where it was selected in the Un Certain Regard section.

Only days before his passing, Shaji N. Karun was honoured with the J.C. Daniel Award — Kerala’s highest film accolade. Fate seemed to have conspired to recognize him just in time.

In December 2018, fresh from surviving a brutal road accident, I had the privilege of making my comeback with an interview of Shaji N. Karun for The Hindu. Beneath a cap hiding my stitched forehead, I found myself speaking with a man of such gentleness and grace that it felt almost like a second healing. He thanked me for the conversation; I still hold that memory close. When I later praised his film 'Olu,' in an email I wrote to him, he event sent me a beautiful note thanking me, "My dear Murtaza, thanks for your support and good heart... My film and ad attempts always require the honest supports from critics like you who understands the cinema as passion and devotion. I am indebted to your honesty..."

Shaji N. Karun's cinema taught us that pain could be beautiful, and beauty could be unbearably human. His frames were prayers; his silences, entire conversations.

Today, even as his bodily form departs, Shaji N. Karun's spirit remains — in every frame he composed, every silence he sculpted, every story he whispered across time and language.

A giant has left the stage, but his light — soft, searching, and everlasting — continues to glow.

The screenings will be held from the 21st of April to the 8th of May 2025 at the C.D. Deshmukh Auditorium, India International Centre, New Delhi. This unique programme presents a selection of acclaimed feature films by Polish directors, along with two remarkable documentaries highlighting the lives of extraordinary Poles with deep connections to India — painter Stefan Norblin and the theosophist Wanda Dynowska.

Speaking about the initiative, Małgorzata Wejsis-Gołębiak, Director of the Polish Institute New Delhi, said, “Polish cinema has long been a mirror to our nation’s soul—rich in history, artistry, and human depth. We are proud to bring these powerful stories to Indian audiences, celebrating the enduring legacy of Polish filmmakers and the unique ties between our cultures.”

The series opens on 21st April 2025 with Feast of Fire (94 min, 2023), directed by Kinga Dębska. The film tells the moving story of two sisters navigating the challenges of disability and ambition in contemporary Poland. The screening begins at 6:30 pm and the film has received numerous accolades, including Best Debut Actor, Best Supporting Actress, and the Golden Kangaroo for Best Film at the Polish Film Festival 2023, as well as the Audience Award at the Polish Film Festival in America.

On 23rd April 2025, audiences will be treated to Ultima Thule (79 min, 2023), directed by Klaudiusz Chrostowski. Set on Britain’s most isolated island, Foula, the film follows Bartek, a man in search of meaning after the sudden loss of his father. A meditation on solitude, memory, and the transformative power of nature, Ultima Thule was honoured with the Best Director Award at the Koszalin Festival of Film Debuts and the Best Film Award at the Polish Film Festival 2023.

Song of Goats (104 min, 2023), directed by Andrzej Jakimowski, will be screened on 28th April 2025. A poignant tale set on a remote Greek island, the film follows Andreas, a man entangled in emotional and financial debt, as he discovers love and the fragility of rural life. The film has won multiple international awards, including Best Feature Film at the Rome Prisma Independent Film Awards and Best Film at the Alexandria Mediterranean Film Festival.

On 30th April 2025, Imagine (105 min, 2012), also directed by Andrzej Jakimowski, will offer a thought-provoking cinematic experience. Set in a Lisbon clinic for the blind, the film focuses on Ian, an unconventional instructor who encourages his students to navigate the world through courage and imagination. A story of exploration beyond physical boundaries, Imagine is a heartfelt and visually stunning feature.

The documentaries begin on 2nd May 2025 with Chitraanjali: Stefan Norblin in India (59 min, 2011), directed by Malgorzata Skiba. The film chronicles the forgotten yet fascinating journey of Polish artist Stefan Norblin, who found refuge in India during World War II and contributed immensely to royal art commissions in Morvi, Ramgarh, and Jodhpur. Małgorzata Wejsis-Gołębiak notes, “This screening is not just a tribute to Norblin’s legacy but also a celebration of the shared artistic and historical connections between our two nations.”

The programme concludes on 8th May 2025 with Enlightened Soul: The Three Names of Umadevi (52 min, 2015), directed by Tonmoy Das. Introduced by producer Sujata Sett, the film explores the remarkable life of Wanda Dynowska, a Polish theosophist and humanitarian who spent decades in India supporting multiple freedom movements and fostering intercultural unity. Known in India as Umadevi, she became a revered figure among Tibetans and Indians alike, yet remains relatively unknown in contemporary discourse. Her life, marked by devotion, service, and sacrifice, stands as a beacon of spiritual and humanitarian ideals.

This special series not only showcases the artistic excellence of Polish cinema but also deepens the cultural bridge between Poland and India, bringing to light shared histories and enduring human stories.

Acclaimed Indian filmmaker Jitendra Mishra has been elected President of the UNESCO-backed International Centre of Films for Children and Young People (CIFEJ) for the 2025–2027 term. Jitendra’s unanimous, unopposed victory marks a rare and significant endorsement from over 50 active members across 40 countries.

Jitendra has also been the Festival Director of the Smile International Film Festival for Children and Youth (SIFFCY), an initiative of Smile Foundation. SIFFCY promotes the use of meaningful cinema to engage, educate, and inspire young audiences. It focuses on using film as a tool for awareness and social impact.

Established in 1955 under the auspices of UNESCO, CIFEJ is a global organization dedicated to promoting culturally relevant, educational content for children and youth. Jitendra’s re-election reflects his continued efforts to build a stronger global platform for youth-focused cinema. Initially established in Brussels, Belgium, the organization is now headquartered in Athens, Greece, hosted by the Hellenic Film and Audiovisual Centre – Creative Greece S.A., under Creative Hub GR.
