After a quick trip into Trader Joe's, I had the makings of sweet little gift for our teachers this afternoon.

Kinda like the Cinco de Mayo flower arrangements I put together last spring, these are as easy as they look. Grab a festive red + green colored soup or tomato can and a bunch of flowers (Hey $3.99 TJ's bouquets!) Clean the can and fill with the flowers and you're good to go!

Drop these at your littles' school or bring one along as a hostess gift...or just keep it for yourself.

It's almost time for our kindergarten halloween party!

After some ideas that didn't quite pan out and a cancelled online supply order, we decided to go simple. Balloons decorated as bats. Because what 5 year old doesn't love a balloon?

All the the pieces are just heavy cardstock punched into different shapes and attached with a glue stick. Easy peasy.

easy cinco de mayo flower arrangements

So just like the Warhol soup cans I turned into vases, this project doesn't need much explanation...just pick a few bunches of bright and colorful flowers, trim them down to size, and fill the cans to overflowing.

This brand of hot tomato sauce does not have a label like the soup cans, so there was no need to seal them. If the can you choose has a paper label, I suggest sealing it.

I ended up only using the larger, 28 oz cans, so I just filled the cans about halfway with water and filled them. If your cans are smaller, floral foam may make the finished arrangements a bit more stable.

I used floral foam for our pumpkin vases here.

The cans of Mexican tomato sauce were about $2 each and I picked the brightest bunches of flowers they had.

a week of easy valentine bento lunches

It's been awhile since I've shared our bento box school lunches, but I really do still make them everyday {I post them to instagram sometimes too}.

Here's a roundup of what I made over the past week for Valentine's Day.

And while they may look like more work, and people love to ask how I find the time, they're not really very complicated. So you can do this too.

Promise.

Over the years I've found a few shortcuts and tips that have worked for me to be able to keep up.

*Assembly line style is your friend. I usually buy two shopping trips worth of produce a week. When I get home, I wash everything, de-stem grapes, slice cucumbers, etc. Obviously some things can't be done ahead of time, but lots can. And even when I'm not making lots of lunches, this approach helps us to reduce waste. Grapes that I destem, wash, and put in a bowl get eaten almost immediately, while ones that I leave in the bag in the fridge usually end up in the garbage.

*Keep tiny supplies together. I have several sets of fondant and cookie cutters that are perfect for cutting fruit and sandwiches. I used to keep them with my other cookie cutters because I sort the big ones by holiday/season, but I wasted a lot of time rifling through larger cookie cutters to get to the small ones. I also realized that I don't even make cutout cookies all that often, so I don't even keep those sets in the kitchen any more.

*Related to keeping the tiny supplies together, I have a plastic bin in our pantry with all the other little lunch trinkets I use. Silicone liners, toothpicks, forks, etc, all go in my bento bin. I try to keep things organized by color in there, as I mix and match often. :)

Cute food is more appetizing to my boys {me too...ha!}... so no half eaten lunches coming back home. That's a win for me.

Valentine's Day is just a few more days away and things are really getting lovey dovey over here. Three school parties on Friday and another little party over the weekend...I'm seeing all pink and red and hearts...and loving it!

I think by now everyone knows how much I adore a pretty package. I enjoy pairing ribbons and papers...and I hope the extra attention I put in shines through to the friends I'm gifting to!

So when it came to thinking of valentines to give, I wanted to go beyond a simple card.

I raided the candy aisles for anything pink and red, and then combined everything in a few different festive treat bags and pillow boxes. I tied each with satin bows and I'm ready to give them this weekend.

I think one of the best discoveries I've made over the years for pretty packaging supplies has been Paper Mart. Ribbons, bags, papers, boxes...all beautiful and all the perfect packaging that I can never seem to source at a local craft or party store. The prices are just right...I don't feel like I have to scrimp on ribbon because the rolls seem to go on forever!

recipe: easy 3 ingredient meatball party appetizer

My New Year's Eves look a lot different than they used to...instead of getting all dolled up and staying out all night, we opt for a quiet night in with our little family {and I'm not complaining!}

Even though we stay home, we still like to put on a bit of a party atmosphere, complete with confetti, noisemakers, and a full spread of yummy food.

One appetizer that is a crowd pleaser...all the way from my 1 year old up to my husband...is meatballs. The best part is that they're a such a snap to make...you probably have the majority of the ingredients in your cupboard right now!

To prepare, you'll need:

jar grape jelly
bottle sweet BBQ sauce
2 bags Johnsonville fully cooked meatballs {because convenience is key!}
slow cooker or crock pot

Thoroughly combine jelly and BBQ sauce in small bowl.

Spray slow cooker with non-stick cooking spray and add meatballs.

Pour jelly mixture over meatballs.

Cook on high for 2 hours or low for 4 hours.

Serve warm and enjoy!

diy: merry + bright christmas doormat

As the days inch closer to the 25th, it's now or never to finish up my craft projects...so I spent a little nap time crafting yesterday and now I have a super cute Christmas doormat welcoming friends in our home.

The design is completely Kelly's idea...I loved her doormat so much I didn't change a thing about it!

To make your own, you'll need:

doormat {this one is from ikea for about 5 bucks}
craft paint
brush/foam
freezer paper
iron
cutting machine or Xacto knife
hole punch

**I didn't have any vinyl to use as a stencil like the original, so I used freezer paper that I had on hand. I was worried paint might bleed underneath on the uneven mat material, but it ironed on well enough and turned out just fine. :)

Start by cutting your design out of freezer paper. I used my Silhouette Cameo...Happy Fox font sized to 470 and for the heart I just used a craft punch. I used a scrap of freezer paper and punched holes for dots.

Iron the stencils to the mat.

and fill in carefully with paint.

Let the paint dry, peel off the stencils, and enjoy!

diy: 5 minute christmas apron

It's Christmas cookie season in our house, so that means for pretty much the entire month of December you'll find me in the kitchen preparing goodies...and usually looking around for a towel to wipe my hands so I don't use my pants.

I'm only slightly more sophisticated than my 6 year old who likes to use his sleeve as a napkin. Ha!

Anywho...I'm not really crazy about wearing full aprons, but found pretty tea towels at Target, that I knew would make for a super cute Christmas apron. {I've got a thing for tea towels. These napkins are still going strong!}

This project is the most basic of sewing {just a few straight lines!}, but if you're not comfortable using a sewing machine, it could be done with fabric glue just as easily.

You'll need:

tea towel
2 yards ribbon or twill tape
clear nail polish or fray check

Start by deciding how long you'd like your apron to be and trimming your towel to size. I made mine about 18 inches long, which sits about Steve Urkel pants height and hits mid-thigh.

Fold over the top edge and iron an inch down on the wrong side of the towel. Hem using a sewing machine or fabric glue.

Trim ribbon or twill tape into two equal pieces. Place one ribbon on each side of the hemmed edge. Sew or glue in place. Use clear nail polish or fray check to seal the raw ends to prevent unraveling.

There you go...a pretty and festive apron perfect for Christmas baking...and in only about 5 minutes...make more than one and gift it along with baking items and a favorite recipe or just make a few for yourself and keep them in rotation. It won't take long!!

diy: 3 ingredient cinnamon christmas ornaments

I shared this project on the Babiekins blog last December...and since we're planning on making these after school one day this week, I thought I'd post the directions here. This project is super easy and will make your whole house smell so Christmasy! xo

To make about two dozen ornaments {depending on the size of your cookie cutters}, you’ll need:

1 cup applesauce

1 cup cinnamon + a bit extra for rolling out dough

2 tablespoons ground cloves

*I buy spices for projects like this at the $1 store or in the bulk bins at the grocery store

Mix all ingredients in a large bowl until everything is well incorporated and a dough forms. It's easiest just digging in and using your hands.

**even though only food ingredients are used, don’t eat these!

Roll out dough, sprinkling extra cinnamon as you would flour to prevent sticking to the rolling pin and counter.

When dough is about 1/2 inch thick, use cookie cutters to cut out ornaments.

Use a wooden skewer to poke a hole through each ornament.

Place ornaments on a cookie sheet and bake in a 225 degree oven for about an hour. Ornaments should be rock hard and completely dried out when they’re done.

When the ornaments have completely cooled, thread a piece of twine through each hole and hang on the tree!

diy: gold leaf bottle stopper + moscow mule printable

It's barely December and already our weekends are packed from now until the end of the year. Parties, open houses...so much fun!

I never like to show up empty handed...but I hate it when I have to stop at the store on the way over because I forgot to think ahead for a hostess gift.

Here's a gift that's pretty and functional and you can totally make a bunch ahead of time to have on hand for any holiday party invites!

You'll need:

plastic animal
gold leaf paint
cork
strong craft glue
satin ribbon

Start by painting your plastic animal with gold leaf paint. Let dry completely.

Then glue the cork to the belly of the animal. Let dry completely again.

If you'd like to add an extra festive touch {or just cover the gap of glue} tie a bit of ribbon around.

And if you'd like to up your gift even more special...nestle a couple of tiny copper mugs in with your stopper.

our 2015 gingerbread houses + a cyber monday deal

Over our Thanksgiving break we made our gingerbread houses. After all these years I've finally managed to cut my stress over this tradition. diy: make a christmas gift wrap kit with hallmark

Giving pretty gifts is totally my thing. {In case you hadn't noticed...ha}

Of course it's always what's on the inside that counts...but going the extra mile to make the outside of a package reflect the thought inside is always worth it.

recipe: southwestern breakfast burritos for thanksgiving morning

Thanksgiving is right around the corner...eek!

Not sure I'm completely ready with a menu and table settings and dishes and centerpieces and dessert {why do I do this to myself??}...but I can say I've got Thanksgiving morning ready to go.

So before we start our busy day of 5k turkey trots and football games in the park and watching the Macy's parade, our family needs a good...but low maintenance!...breakfast to get us through til the big meal. One of my favorite go-tos is breakfast burritos.

They're quick.
They're easy.
They're crowd pleasers.

Any food that all six of us can agree on...winner!

To make them, you'll need:

1 package Johnsonville Naturals Breakfast Sausage

1 package refrigerated "southwestern" hashbrown potatoes
6-8 eggs {I hate leaving just an egg or two in the fridge, so I'm not exact...I use what I have. I also sometimes use a carton of egg whites if I have one}
2-3 cups Monterey Jack {or cheddar...or whatever you like best} cheese
Flour Tortillas

Salsa {optional}

Sour cream {optional}

Start by browning the sausage in a cast iron skillet and draining any fat.

Whisk together eggs and cheese in a separate bowl.

Add potatoes to sausage in skillet and brown.

Pour the egg mixture over the sausage and potatoes. Scramble the eggs, being careful not to

While everything is cooking, warm up some tortillas in the microwave {15-20 seconds, or whatever the package says}.

When the eggs are finished cooking, scoop a bit into each tortilla and fold each tightly. Then I like to wrap them in foil like little swaddled baby burritos.

I crack myself up.

But it does make keeping extras in the fridge a lot easier. :)
