A Quick Update

I figured I needed to make a post just to say that I'm still here and I plan to start posting again regularly as soon as possible. A few things have set me back recently. I've dealt with a bunch of computer problems over the past month. First the internet got shut off for a few days, then the power cord to my laptop stopped working so I had to wait for a new one to come in the mail, then the cord for my laptop cooler died and I couldn't do much of anything without my computer shutting itself down. I just got the new cord for my cooler over the weekend and everything seems to be up and running ok now.

Even with my computer in working order I'm having a hard time getting together the posts I want to make because I've been very very sick the past few weeks. Pretty much all of my projects have been put on hold as of now and I'm just trying to rest and not stress too much. Hopefully I'll start feeling more like myself soon and posting will resume but until then you might not see much from me here. You can always find me on Twitter if you want to keep up with my day to day stuff. I have a lot of cool ideas I want to share with all of you and I'm positive that they will be realized in time, but for now I just have to sit and wait this out. Thank you for understanding.

Quirky Love: Vinyl, Pizza and Comic Books (Little Five Points)

There's a place in Atlanta called Little Five Points that's one of my boyfriend and my favorite places to visit when we get the chance. It's a really bright place so I tried to make these pages reflect that. There are walls of absolutely beautiful graffiti, bright fliers, bright signs, and brightly dressed people everywhere. There are record stores, comic book stores, funky clothing stores, restaurants, music and theater venues, and tons of other little places. If you're ever in Atlanta be sure to check it out especially around Halloween if you can make it to the badass parade the put on. For these pages I also cut a slit to make a little pocket and inside there's a gift card for Savage Pizza, which is a really delicious pizza place, so that we can go there next time we visit. I'm excited to go again.

My boyfriend and I are super passionate about music. So passionate in fact that we'd like to learn more about making it. He goes more of the digital route and is learning a bunch of music making programs where I would be happy just to learn to play the keyboards again (I taught myself when I was younger but it was so long ago that I have to re-learn everything). I think it's the perfect thing to learn together and help each other with. I love being able to share creative outlets with the people I care about.

In the polariod frame on these pages I wrote the poem Ode by Arthur O'Shaughnessy. You may recognize the first couple of lines from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

We are the music makers,

And we are the dreamers of dreams,

Wandering by lone sea-breakers,

My Goals For August 2011

First lets go over my goals for July:

I want to make time to meet up with friends I haven't seen in awhile even if that just means having them over to play some board games and watch a movie. I didn't get to do this. I don't know when I will because I've been so sick lately.
~~I want to make some new polymer clay charms. I have so many pretty colors I want to experiment with.~~ I did this along with editing some photos and doing some painting.
~~I would like to keep updating my blog regularly and keep working on graphics and things like that.~~ I think I did the best I could this month and that's good enough for me.

Now on to August!

I want to finish posting all of the pages from my Adventure Book.
Continue to make more charms and other art.
Photograph my charms.
Work on making some Artist Trading Cards. I'm not sure if I'll swap or sell them yet (maybe both).

I've posted briefly about the lovely KatieJane Garside before and one of her older projects, Queen Adreena. They have quickly become one of my favorite and most listened to bands. I seem to fall in love with anything KatieJane Garside touches. Her art, her style, her various musical projects are all so perfectly beautiful and speak to me on many different levels. Even though I don't know how to properly categorize any of them she covers a wide range of styles which you can see in these videos.

One-Eyed Doll is full of energy and mega-fun, not to mention super talented. I have a hard time defining their style because they switch from beautifully melodic to loud in your face guitar riffs. Either way they rock and Kimberly Freeman's voice is pure magic. You can get a bunch of tracks for free from their Last.fm page. They're definitely worth checking out (my favorites are See Jane Run and Resurrection). There is also a free documentary about them on YouTube if you're interested.

Quirky Love: Star Gazing

Continuing with some more pages from my Adventure Book here's two of my favorites. I think one of the most romantic things you can do during the summer is to go star gazing. You can pack a picnic and take a blanket and just enjoy the beauty of the sky. If you plan ahead you can go during a meteor shower and make wishes on shooting stars together. If the outdoors isn't your thing or the weather is just not cooperating you could go to a planetarium instead (here's a list of a bunch in the US). A lot of them have free entry and they're good old fashioned geeky fun. For my pages I listed a couple of meteor showers that happen during the summer; the Southern Delta Aquarids Meteor Shower and the Perseid Meteor Shower. On the other page I included a pull out for an exhibit going on at our local science center. I love space and stars and science in general so it's a fun thing to share with my boyfriend.

Photography is a hobby of mine and I love learning new techniques and tricks. I wrote in the film on the side the quote "Photography is the beauty of life captured." I think photography can be a fun thing to learn how to do with a partner. My boyfriend is super into computers so he's helped me find all kinds of free image programs to experiment with. I like to document our lives and the things we do through photos. They're a wonderful reminder of where we've been.

My Quirky Life: Venue Change

I know I need to post more, I'm working on it. I've had lots of pain issues (again) this week so I've had a hard time getting my thoughts in order so I could actually post something. I don't want to end up posting a gurgling mess of grumpiness >.<

First of all I want to talk about changing venues for my shop. I never had a real chance to get my ArtFire store up and running due to medical stuff and they've recently announced that they're doing away with Basic (free) accounts. That's all fine and dandy since I hadn't been able to get to really invested there. I can't afford the $10 a month subscription fee so I'm moving my shop over to Zibbet for now. What I really want to do in the future is set up my own shop but I have to learn how to first. Until then Zibbet is where you can find me :)

I'm working on polymer clay charms and jewelry to list right now but I'll also be putting up some prints of my photography and some artist trading cards (expect tiny zombie bunnies!). Speaking of photography I've been asked by a friend to contribute some of mine to an online magazine. I'll be going through my stuff and trying to figure out what to submit later today. I have a hard time judging my own art. When the issue is published I'll be sure to link it here :) And of course I'll post here and on Twitter and Tumblr when I finally get stuff listed in my shop.

I'm going to try to get through and post the rest of the pages of the Adventure Book I made in the next couple of weeks as well so be on the look out for that! I hope you're all having a wonderful weekend.

My Quirky Life: This Week Has Been Long

I figured I should make a post so my blog doesn't get lonely. This week has been particularly tough for some reason so it's been hard to find time to write a decent post. Most of my time has been spent asleep or in a half-awake stupor where I can't think straight. I'm sure my messed up sleep schedule isn't helping things. I should be going and staying with my boyfriend again soon so hopefully that can help me get back on track.

When I could I've filled my time with polymer clay and doodles (mostly zombies, I'm constantly drawing zombies or robots for some reason). Once my clay pieces are completely finished (I'm making quite a few of them into charms for wrap bracelets) I'll have pictures up. I'll also be listing them on my ArtFire store for sale :) Speaking of which, I made myself some super simple business cards last night/ morning. I think they'll work for now.

I recently came across a couple of blogs that blend two of my favorite things: art and science.

First of all I found a tumblr called Science is Beauty. They mostly post images (the format that's best for tumblr in my opinion). Their posts are short and sweet but can act as a jumping off point for more in depth learning if you so desire.

Secondly, I stumbled upon what might be my new favorite blog: Mad Art Lab. They have articles about a wide variety of topics (film festivals, cartoons, fashion, ect.) that all have a geeky science bent to them. It's the absolute perfect blend and I love to see what new and wonderful stuff they find. My favorite thing I've discovered through the blog so far has to be these gorgeous blow glass ray guns! I've posted about my ray gun love in the past so that shouldn't be very surprising :)

First let's go over my goals for June:

~~I want to start updating this blog regularly again. I've been overwhelmed with other things lately but I miss blogging.~~ I've done a much better job over the past month than I did in May.
~~Help my boyfriend list stuff on eBay. I'll try to post links to the things we're selling on my Twitter if you're interested. A lot of it is computer and video game stuff.~~ There's still more stuff to list but we've sold a few things so far :)
~~Start walking regularly~~. I'm going to mark this one off even though I didn't do it as much as I would like because it basically became impossible when I ran out of heart medication.

Now on to July!

Quirky Love: Coca Cola

Since my boyfriend and I are in the grand old state of Georgia it made sense for the third set of pages to be all about Coca Cola. I was able to get free tickets to the Coke Museum from MyCokeRewards. Even though I've lived here my whole life and I love Coke I've never been. My boyfriend went when he was younger but he hasn't been back since they remodeled. I'm excited to do some of the cool stuff they have there, especially the part where you get to try all the different kinds of drinks they have.

You can have your own romantic taste test with your special someone by making different Coke floats. Don't feel like you can only use Coke either. Try lots of different things. You can even give your creations cute names. For example...

My Quirky Life: Pokemon, Makeup, and Nail Art

I've been battling a killer migraine (from outterrr spaceee!) for over a week now. I had one day without pain but I was so tired I still barely got anything done. To distract myself from the pain I've been playing A LOT of Pokemon. My boyfriend and I actually went to McDonalds the other day and I ended up getting a Pokemon toy (a cute Tepig!). He goes right along with the game.

In other news I've started to put together a makeup kit. I got a whole bunch of brushes from e.l.f. because they were having a sale. So far I'm super pleased with all of them, especially the ones from the Studio Line (they're sooo soft). I'm hoping that once I get it all setup and ready to go I can stat doing some freelance makeup work. I really want to get into special effects and stage makeup so we'll see how that goes. Once I get the whole thing stocked I'll post pictures and an overviews of all the everything I have in it. It wont be a very big kit, I'm just trying to keep it to the basics for now.

One last thing that I've been meaning to post for FOREVER. Here's a little preview of the monster nails I did awhile back. They seem Summery to me for some reason, I think it's because they're so bright. They give me fun a Rob Zombie/ rockabilly vibe. I want to do them again so hopefully I'll have a tutorial for them soon.

Quirky Love: Sidewalk Chalk

The second set of pages in the adventure book are all about sidewalk chalk. On the first page I wrote the poem "Where the Sidewalk Ends" by Shel Silverstein. I used to love checking out Shel Silverstein's books from the library at school so his poems always remind me of being a little kid. Drawing with chalk has similar nostalgia for me. I thought it would be fun to share the simple enjoyment of sidewalk chalk with my boyfriend so I bought a small pack to go along with these pages. Drawing with chalk can be a fun and inexpensive way to spend time together.

Quirky Love: Strawberry Adventures

The first of pages in our adventure book feature strawberries (one of my boyfriend's favorites). If we get a chance I'd love for my boyfriend and I to go berry picking but if that doesn't work out we can always get some berries from a farmer's market or the grocery store. I wrote ideas in the clouds on the right page of what we could make with them. We both love to bake and cook so it's a great way to spend time together.

Here's are some ideas for a romantic strawberry filled Summer:

As I mentioned before, berry picking can be a fun and romantic way to spend an afternoon. (This site has a big list of pick-your-own farms if you want to find one in your area.)
Surprise your partner with a berry treat.
Or better yet, make something together. (My suggestion above are: cupcakes, salad, pancakes, pies, smoothies, tarts, cake, jam, muffins, and ice cream.) There are tons of fun and unique things you can do with strawberries (try this site and this one for some inspiration.)
Cut the strawberries into hearts or other pretty shapes. (Check out this tutorial to show you how.)
Make some chocolate fondue and have chocolate dipped strawberries. (For more fondue ideas check out my 2010 Valentine's Day post)

Quirky Love: Our Third Anniversary Adventure Book

My boyfriend and I recently celebrated out third anniversary on May the 30th. Money is a little bit tight this year but I wanted to make something fun and personal for him. What I came up with is something I've been calling an adventure book. It's filled with stuff that I want to do with him over his Summer break so each set of pages inside has a little theme. I also included some little pull out things (tickets, notes, fliers, etc.) with the pages. The gift is more about the fun things we'll do together than the actual book itself, because one of the best gifts you can give is time to spend together.

The whole project itself wasn't too expensive because I used things I already had. The cover is made from a cereal box that I painted. I put some ribbon that I had left over from another craft project along the side and I held together the pages inside with book rings. The decorations are all various shades of blue because blue is my boyfriend's favorite color. I used a bunch of free graphics I found online (mostly from DeviantART's Resource section) and put them together in GIMP (which is a free photo editing program) to make the pages. The most expensive part of the project was having the pages printed at Staples because I had them printed on cardstock. I believe it was around $22. The gifts I included (tickets, and a gift certificate) I got for free from MyCokeRewards. I think overall the project ended up being under $30.

I'll be posting each set of pages individually along with inspiration and ideas related to their themes. I'll also be posting the blank templates for each so you can use them in your projects if you wish.

Here's some stuff I'm digging this week:

This awesome piece/ slideshow about Nirvana from GQ.

This video/ song from the band The Dogbones. I hadn't heard of them until a few days ago when I found them through a Wikipedia reading chain. They're fun-grungey-female fronted goodness.

I've been having a lot of fun playing with an app called Goby. It shows you stuff that's going on around where you live or are visiting. Oh, and it's free!
