German Film Orchestra pays tribute to AR Rahman's music

It was a memorable moment for the audience when famous German Film Orchestra Babelsberg took to stage to perform on classic scores by music maestro A R Rahman from films 'Bombay', 'Roja' and 'Swades'.

Though, the Rahman himself didn't perform, the crowd went crazy and welcomed him with whistles and a standing ovation as he got on the stage to address the audience last night.

"Every time I watch them (German Film Orchestra) play I am somewhere else... forgetting that it's my music.. Not many know how I make music.. I lock myself in the studio and sit alone for hours," Rahman said.

"I am really excited and grateful for this gesture of the German Film Orchestra Babelsberg for doing this tour in India along with our students and kids from the K M Music Conservatory. I am sure this will be a new experience to Indian score lovers," the 46-year-old added.

Rahman is a two time Academy Award winner and has given hits in films like 'Slumdog Millionaire', 'Taal', 'Jodhaa Akbar', 'Rang De Basanti' and the recently released 'Rockstar'. He also gave music in Danny Boyle's '127 Hours'.

The concert was held to celebrate the completion of 60 years of Indo-German diplomatic relations under the collaborative effort of 'Germany and India 2011-2012: Infinite Opportunities'.

"As a musician, I have had the opportunity to travel to many countries and most of the continents on this planet. The music that we played formed an inherent part of us. I was enthralled with the idea of the German Film Orchestra Babelsberg interpreting the music of A R Rahman in India.

"Rahman writes not just the sound track for films, he composes the sound track for an entire country and thus describes what is most beautiful and precious in this country -- its people," said Klaus-Peter Beyer, director of the German Film Orchestra Babelsberg.

Rockstar wins for Best Music at Zee Cine Awards

Ranbir Kapoor's performance in Rockstar managed to get him the Best Actor (Popular) trophy at the Zee Cine Awards 2012 held in Macau on Saturday, January 21. Meanwhile, Shahrukh Khan, who also hosted the awards with Priyanka Chopra, won the Best Actor (Jury) award for Don 2. Vidya Balan garnered the Best Actress award in both categories for The Dirty Picture. Best Film (Popular) went to Rockstar and Best Film (Jury) went to The Dirty Picture. AR Rahman won the Best Music Award for Rockstar. Jeetendra won the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Fan to get opportunity to sing with AR Rahman

Dubai: A contest titled Sing like a star with AR Rahman, is to be held here where one deserving winner will get the opportunity to sing live on stage with the music maestro.

The contest which has been sponsored by a leading bank, will be held on December 9. Auditions for the contest, will be held on November 23 where aspiring contestants will sing the popular song: `Phir se ud chala` from the recent movie `Rockstar`, the music for which has been composed by Rahman.

The contest will open the doors of opportunity for several talented singers," said Vikram Krishna, Head, Group Marketing, Emirates NBD.

Ten top finalists will be shortlisted to meet and perform for AR Rahman, who will select the winner of the contest.

The grand prize winner will receive training and tips from the Oscar winning music composer ahead of the live performance.

Rahman, who began his film career in the early 1990s, has sold more than 300 million records worldwide. Dubai International Film Festival to Honor Indian Music Composer A. R. Rahman with Lifetime Achievement Award

The eighth Dubai International Film Festival will honor Indian music composer A. R. Rahman with its Lifetime Achievement Award.

Winner of two Academy Awards, two Grammy Awards and a raft of laurels for his impressive body of work in Indian and international films and music, 45-year-old Rahman is the first musician to be feted by DIFF with its crowning honor.

Described as the ‘Mozart of Madras,’ the south Indian city he hails from, Rahman is among the youngest recipients of DIFF’s Lifetime Achievement Award, which singles out cinema and industry legends from Arab cinema, Asia and Africa, and Europe, the Americas and Australasia, for their contribution to the film industry.

The Indian composer, singer, song-writer, record producer, musician and philanthropist has more than 100 film sound-tracks to his credit in several Indian languages as well as English and Mandarin. His work for Slumdog Millionaire, which was screened at DIFF 2008, won two Academy Awards for Best Original Music Score and Best Original Song, while his score for 127 Hours, which screened at DIFF 2010, won him Golden Globe, BAFTA and Academy Award nominations.

Festival chairman Abdulhamid Juma said: “A. R. Rahman is an inspiration for countless musicians and composers, and has brought a fresh infusion of talent to the Indian film industry. Through his international foray, working with some of the world’s most accomplished musicians, he demonstrated the power of music to cross all barriers and connect with a global audience.

Music maestro AR Rahman has teammed up with Amy Tinkham, the creative director behind the concerts by Britney Spears and Mariah Carey, for his world tour from next month.

The Man, The Music, The Legend concert will kick off from Dubai on December 9 for cutting edge theatrical experience at the Dubai International Stadium in Sports City.

The concert promises to enthrall audience with cutting edge theatrical experiences and powerful dance arrangements.

"AR Rahman''s music has not only redefined contemporary Indian music but also transcended boundaries. This really is one ''must see'' event not to be missed. It''s aimed at people of all ages and all nationalities," said Talent Brokers'' Richard Coram in a statement.

Apart from technological advancements, the concert also aims to bring a mix of Indian heritage and contemporary presentation through LED screens.

Rahman pays Ode to Bismillah Khan

I still cherish the time I played my song Maa tujhe salaam… to him when he had visited my studio in Chennai. He loved my singing and offered many kind words on it. If he were alive, I’d love to play it for him again,” reminisces AR Rahman, who was recently in the city to promote a documentary titled "Bismillah of Benaras", based on the Bharat Ratna-honoured shehnai player.

The film is directed by UK-based Nasreen Munni Kabir, who also authored the book, "A R Rahman: The Spirit of Music" that released this summer. Rahman mentions, “After watching this film and witnessing Bismillah’s austere life, your perception of him will change.”

According to the Oscar-winning composer, the ‘guru-shishya parampara’ (teacher-student relationship) that is the underlying crux of Indian classical music is largely absent in Bollywood and contemporary music. “I don’t think anyone has gratitude like that in contemporary music. It’s like the murshid and mureed (teacher and disciple) in Sufism. It’s not just the passing on of knowledge, but of the spirit too,” Rahman says, adding, “I remember learning my first Carnatic music lesson from my father’s teacher. He taught me one varnam (carnatic song) and said, ‘That’s it, I think you’ve learnt it all. You’ll become a composer.’ The next day, I signed up for the music of Roja (1992),” he smiles.

Rahman believes that only Indians can understand the core of classical music. “Spirituality is hardwired into us, and that’s the reason we can connect with classical music. We get gooseflesh when we hear a particular raag (melody), and different raags evoke different emotions. I don’t know if it’s relevant for a foreign audience,” Rahman says. Likening Bismillah’s relationship with Benaras to his own with Chennai, Rahman signs off laughing, “You know what they say about the English and why they colonised the world. It’s the same with Chennai and me. If anything, it’s driven me out, and that’s why I’m making music across the world.”

AR Rahman is now set to collaborate with Mick Jagger (The Rolling Stones’ front man) in a super group called Super Heavy. Rahman has also joined hands with Michael Bolton for the American music icon’s new album titled Gems. Closer home, his fans await the music of Rockstar, expected to bust the charts this year. Excerpts from a chat fest…

You must be tired of signing copies of your hit biography AR Rahman: The Spirit of Music…If it means something to people, it’s definitely worth the pain. But after a while, it’s better to ease off. Sometimes you’re jet lagged, half asleep, half in a mess and someone wants to click a photograph with you. At such times, I politely refuse saying, ‘I can’t do it, I’m sorry’.

You will be composing for the first time for a Yash Chopra directed film. What does the association mean to you? Yashji is a legend in Indian cinema and it’s a great thing to be working with him. I'm looking forward to it.

Which of Yash Raj Films’ songs are your favourite?I loved the song Tere Liye... from Veer Zaara because it had been composed by the legendary Madan Mohan. Lataji’s (Mangeshkar) voice in it is magical.

Music director Ismail Darbar recently accused you of having bought the Oscar Award for Slum Dog Millionaire and even said that Jai ho was composed by someone else. As director of KM Musiq which produced the Slumdog Millionare soundtrack, we wanted to sue Ismail Darbar for 50 million dollars for having spread unacceptable slander about things he is naive about.

What made you change your mind about suing him then? It’s the aspiring Sufi in me. My answer to them is, “Dear Friends, who stab me in my back, I will always love you and pray for you. Amen!’’

What unknown aspect about yourself have you revealed in the biography?There are many things that I haven’t spoken about earlier. Readers seem to be moved by my admission of how I sold my mother’s jewellery to buy equipment.

Do you know where the book Teach Yourself Mandarin mentioned in your biography is now lying? It’s lying in a special music research room, which I never used because after that I happened to travel a lot.

As a composer do you go through a ‘composer’s block’ sometimes? Good question! See, the primary job is conceiving a tune. So when something is not working out on one song, I sit on the next one. That opens up your mind and the block disappears. That’s the advantage of doing a lot of work. When you’re working on a single project you could fall into this rut. But it does get stressful with looming deadlines.

Which is your favourite musical instrument?That would be an instrument owned by an extraordinary instrumentalist – say a mandolin player like U Srinivas. Or the great violin player like Ganesh Kubereshwar in the South.

You’ve maintained that you’re not a good teacher. Why? Teaching is something finite. I can only teach when I’m 100 per cent sure that I’ve got something to teach (Laughs). I’m constantly learning and trying to unlearn things.

People close to you maintain that international acclaim hasn’t changed you. Are you incorruptible in that sense? Don’t say that! Everyone has corruption in them. It’s mainly because of an inherent selfishness that you are tied to.

Shekhar Kapur was the first one to whom you said, ‘I want to do your movie (Elizabeth – the Golden Age).’ Who were the second and third?It ended there! (Laughs) I always believe that when I ask for something, it gets jinxed. I get things which I deserve and those I don’t deserve, I don’t get.

How do you balance the dichotomy of following Sufism and the materialism which comes with success?
Well, one is material richness and the other is spiritual richness. I maybe rich moneywise but I’m spiritually poor. I’m a fakir in a way.

Is there a Sufi saint you want to compose a song for now? Yeah, there’s always that thought. It can’t be dictated by commerce. Like Khwaja mere Khwaja (Jodhaa Akbar) was genuinely composed for myself and later given to Ashutosh (Gowariker).

Music is supposedly banned in Islam. Your take.I embraced Islam through Sufism. I’m steadfastly following that path. That is serving religion through Sufism.

Do you credit yourself for inspiring Indian musicians to make a mark in rock and rap, R&B and other Western music forms?All that already existed but was underground. The Indian population comprises 60 per cent youth. Some musicians do fantastic stuff with Indian classical music. That’s the positive thing about our country. People can do anything they want and have the time of their lives.

What’s the major difference when composing music for films in the South and the North?It’s like if I give idli sambhar to a North Indian, he’ll say, ‘What is this? I need my roti!’ And if you give a roti to a South Indian, he’ll say, ‘I need my idli sambhar, pongal and dosa’. Some people have gone beyond that but most haven’t.

Which are the Hindi songs you grew up on?I grew up on Subhash Ghai’s Hero (Laxmikant-Pyarelal) and then what’s that tara ra ra ra (hums the Suhana safar tune from Madhumati)! I’ve not grown up much on Hindi music. But I used to like the music of Sholay (RD Burman).

Why do you work at night?I’ve explained this a million of times. Earlier, I used to work from 9 am to 9 pm for commercials and other assignments. After pack-up, I’d do my own creative work from 11 pm to 5 am in the morning. So for practical reasons, all my creative work was done at night. When I started composing for films, this became a habit. I’d begin around 11 pm.

How do you maintain a balance between being a private person and a public figure?There are lots of things which are personal, which is best not let out.
I love keeping it that way (Laughs). I don’t tweet, ‘I’m going to the bathroom’. Or, ‘I’m having lunch with someone’. I don’t post such tweets and bore people. I tweet Only if I have something important to say.
