Congregational Church Cemetery Records Digitisation Project (work in progress)

In preparation for the 150th Anniversary celebrations last November, a comprehensive list and site plan of the Maungaturoto Congregational Cemetery on Gorge Road had been compiled by Albie Paton and the committee. I photographed the list and decided to digitise the records. This is a first for the Kaipara District. It's also a long process, eventually I hope it will be completed before mid-2015. I would like to thank Albie and the committee for their hard work in the compilation of the cemetery list. This is a work in progress so it will pay to check the site every couple of months for updates. You can view the homepage here.

New water feature now turned on in Maungaturoto

The sound of water is now an integral part of our beautiful township. This is part of the ongoing effort by the Maungaturoto Residents Association to beautiful Maungaturoto. If you haven't already taken a look, the new water feature is outside Dreams. Well worth checking out.

Maungaturoto Residents Association have gone all out to rebrand and revamp the internet profile of our lovely town. Featuring a new logo based on the prominent Pukearoa mountain dominating the local landscape, the new website looks to be a winner. Check it out here

Once again Santa will be visiting our lovely town right here in Maungaturoto. He's due to arrive at 5.30pm on Saturday 15th December 2012.

The parade begins at 5.30pm with Carnival activities beginning at 6pm. Terri Donaldson the Parade's coordinator says the Carnival promises to be great fun and currently includes candy floss, old time games (sponsored by Fonterra), the Scout's sausage sizzle,the Lion's hot chips and hot dogs, Real Town Pies eating competition, a win a beer fridge competition courtesy of 100% Fergus Appliances, balloon animals and much much more.

Terri is asking local groups to support the Carnival by hosting an event. If you'd like to organise something please contact Nyree on 09 431 8462. There is also an opportunity to hold a stall or car boot sale. Stalls will be located at the Maungaturoto Primary School and a site fee of $10 will apply. Contact Marge Paton on 09 431 8148 to book a site.

A Taste of the Magic of Excel

Computer learning in 2 hour learning sessions

SeniorNet Mangawhai is introducing the first of our modules – ‘A Taste of the Magic of Excel’ on Wednesday 31 October at 12 noon.

‘A Taste of the Magic of Excel’ is an introduction to Excel spreadsheets: understanding the structure; how to input data/formulas into a workbook and how to create charts. The module is broken into several parts, each building on the step before and demonstrated first on the big screen. The student watches and is then given a set of notes for the specific task that has been shown before going to a computer to repeat the exercise they have just observed. The process is repeated for each part of the module during the 2 hour session (with tutor/s on hand to assist).

The minimum requirement for this module is competence in basic computer skills.

Our ever changing town

Anyone coming into Maungaturoto over the last few months may have noticed the face of our township is changing. The Maungaturoto Beautification Project is in full swing getting geared up for our 150th Celebrations on 1st - 3rd November 2013. I've watched the transformation taking place over a very short period of time. All done by volunteers. There's some fantastic images of the project's progress on the website and on the Maungaturoto Facebook page.

Be sure to check out the website and the Facebook page it's worth a look. And they're always looking for a helping hand. So if you have the time please volunteer and help out with this very worthwhile and fantastic project.

Just to let you all know and to ask if anyone is free for these upcoming working bees for the Maungaturoto Beautification Project;

SATURDAY 11TH AUGUST - start 9am

Working Bee on Whaka St to finish plantings etc. If you can come along please bring a wheelbarrow :) We would like to get this finished as soon as possible so that we can begin the Beautification Project in town. You dont have to be a gardener to come along, just bring a smile :)

SATURDAY 18TH AUGUST - start 9am

Working Bee in town starting to clear plants/trees for the Beautification Project. At this working bee we need people to offer help with man/woman power, bringing along chainsaws and trailers. Zonta Club Mangawhai 2nd Annual Award for Young Women applications now open

The Zonta Club of Mangawhai is delighted to offer our 2^nd Annual Award for young women in the area in the form of a 10 Day Youth Development Voyage on the Spirit of Adventure.
Criteria for application are as follows:

The applicant

is a young woman from 15-18 years of age
Is a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident of New Zealand
Is a resident of Mangawhai, Tomorata, Wellsford, Kaiwaka, Maungaturoto or Waipu area
has shown leadership potential or would like to develop leadership skills
meets the medical criteria of the Spirit of Adventure Trust
must be able to swim 100 metres unaided
will report back to the Zonta Club of Mangawhai after the voyage
Application to include letter from applicant outlining reasons for application
e.g. involvement in community activities or associations? How does the voyage fit into your personal goals and how do you think this experience will help you achieve them?
How you will share your voyage experiences with your school or local community.
Application to include 2 referees (not a family member)

The Zonta Club of Mangawhai held another successful Trivial Pursuits evening on June 28^th to raise funds for their Annual Spirit of Adventure Award. The Club would like to thank all those who attended, those who sponsored prizes and the Rotary Club of Browns Bay for convening the quiz.
First prize winners were ‘Gilligan’s Island’ (right)
with runners up ‘Causeway Crew’
and best dressed award went to ‘The Naughty Lusts’ for the second year in a row

Applications are now open for the 2012 award (see above).
Last year the successsful applicant of this award was Leila Stephens, a Year 13 student at Otamatea High School.

Otamatea were two minutes away from the biggest upset of the season as Wellsford scored in the 11th hour to steal victory.

There is always some added sting when these two teams meet and this game was no exception.

A glorious winters day, Otamatea Sponsors day and the fact that Wellsford sit top of the table while Otamatea are now confined to the wooden spoon only added to the spectacle.

No one can deny this was a stoic Otamatea performance. Crunching defense and a committed team effort in the first half rattled the championship contenders as Wellsford were very lucky to only be behind by three at the break.

Wellsford however are not top of the table for nothing, and early in the second half they demonstrated their strike power as they managed to cross the line and take the lead.

Tommy King then rolled back the years to score beating three players on the way to the line before the game then turned into a see-saw affair.

Wellsford scored quickly again before Otamatea replied after a succession of drives at the line from the forward pack eventually led to captain Siaosi Tuato crashing over to regain the lead.

With less then five minutes to go this set-up a thrilling finish as Otamatea leading 13-12.

Failure to control a kick-off gifted Wellsford the ball, and, from the following possession and a number of missed tackles Wellsford crashed over in the corner as Otamatea hearts sank.

Otamatea had time for the kick-off but it was not regathered the clearing kick from Wellsford ended the game.

As the season winds down this performance will encourage players, supporters and coaches that although the season has not produced the desired results, when the Hawks are on the game they can match the best teams in Northland.

The reserves also performed well in a competitive open match but unfortunately suffered a defeat to a youthful Wellsford team 32-41.

Transit of Venus, June 6, 2012

On June 6, 2012, Venus will be transiting across the sun, from 10.30am until 4.30pm.

Transits of Venus are rare, occurring in pairs, eight years apart, with over a century between pairs. The first part of this pair, in 2004, was not able to be seen in New Zealand.

The next transit of Venus able to be seen from New Zealand won’t be until 2117, so no-one we know now will still be living to witness it.

James Cook travelled to the Pacific in 1769 to witness the transit of Venus and made landfall in Tairawhiti. So there is an historical context to witnessing the transit (seeing the same spectacle as James Cook as he discovered New Zealand).

The Kauri Museum at Matakohe will be providing a telescope with a sun filter for viewing the transit. It will be set up in the tennis courts to the left of the museum. Everyone will be welcome to take a look as the transit progresses throughout the day. The best viewing time (when Venus will be at the high point of it’s arc across the bottom of the sun) will be at between 1 and 1.30pm.

Once again it was Otamatea's inability to put together an 80 minute performance that lost the game. After a initially strong start Otamatea. allowed the Hikurangi pack to run at them and ultimately let in a number of try's around the ruck.

Mike Tovine salvaging the first half with an intercept try on the stroke of half-time. Hikurangi continued the same strategy in the second half and it wasn't until the last 20 minutes that Otamatea moved the ball scoring three tries and finishing strongly.

John-Luke Whitehead scored off his uncle Tommy King's chip kick, Mike Tovine ran 70 metres after a great inside ball from Olly Newton and Fono dotted down under the posts to finish the day. Prop Michael Batters was rushed to hospital with a suspected neck injury but thankfully is all right, he was diagnosed with some ligament damage and will be out for at least 3 weeks. The reserves had a fantastic game winning there second of the year 28-18. Thomas Tee Paa, Lincoln Paikea and Willie Garnett all instrumental in the win. However it was quoted as being 'a real team effort' by many players after the game. A fantastic moral booster for a team who have already improved significantly since last year. Players of the day: Aaron Kemp, Willie Garnett.

Otamatea Day Camp

Is on again during the first week of the School Holidays. Camp dates: April 11, 12 and 13th. Bus pickups are from 8.45 am each day. Camp runs from 8.45 am to 3 pm each day. Registrations costs $25 per child or 2 children (same family) $30, 3 Children $36.Programme includes Archery, Horse Riding and much more. Registration forms are available from School Offices, Skelton's Drapery (Paparoa), Dreams (Maungaturoto), Sugarbelle's Cafe (Maungaturoto) and the Kaipara District Council Office at Kaiwaka.

Quiz Night April 24th

On Saturday 28 April at 7 pm the Maungaturoto Hall Committee are doing a Save The Hall Fundraiser with a Quiz Night. It costs $10 per team with a maximum of 6 people per team. You can contact Nyree Alcock on 09 431 8462 to register. Cash bar, nibbles plus Quickfire Raffles and Prizes. This should be a fun night out for everyone. Show your support by registering a team and help to raise funds so our community can keep our wonderful Centennial Hall.
