USPAP Update Course

Northern New Jersey ASA Chapter 73 will offer the 7 hour Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP) Update Course on Friday May 16, 2008 at the The Holiday Inn-Harmon Meadows, 300 Plaza Dr, Secaucus, NJ 07094 (Telephone: 201-348-2000). The course, which will be conducted by ASA International President, John D. Willey, FASA, is for members who have already completed the full USPAP course. It covers critical changes and revisions to USPAP that significantly impact every practicing appraiser. Registration is at 8:00 am; the class is from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm. The cost is $135 per person. Multidisciplinary Appraisal Lecture and Tour

The Northern NJ ASA Chapter and the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) will jointly sponsor a Multidisplinary Appraisal Lecture and Tour on Thursday, May 15, 2008 at the historic Grand Lodge building, Masonic Hall, 71 W 23rd St, New York, NY 10010-4149. RICS President David Tuffin, FRICS, and ASA International President John Willey, FASA, will be the guests of honor.

The evening will get underway with a tour of the 17-story Grand Lodge building. Built in 1910, it has over a dozen lavish rooms, each furnished in a different decor, including Gothic, Doric, Renaissance, and Colonial, to name a few, each with its own pipe organ! The tour and subsequent lectures culminate a year-long, multidisciplinary insurance appraisal of the interiors and real estate of one of the largest Masonic lodges in the world.

Ellen J. Epstein, ASA will discuss her valuation of the personal property and fine arts. Joseph P. Novelli, ASA will discuss the valuation of all the interior finishes. Paul D. Roberts, ASA will discuss the overall coordination of the project, and how the different disciplines worked in concert to supply the answers needed for insurance purposes. Jennifer Lazor is an associate in Riker Danzig's Family Law Group, and is a qualified family law mediator who also sits as an early settlement panelist in Morris and Essex Counties. A graduate of Lafayette College and Rutgers Law, Ms. Lazor is a member of the New Jersey State Bar Association (NJSBA) and the Morris County Bar Association. Charles Rosoff is the President of Appraisal Services Associates of New York and Connecticut, and is a former ASA NY State Director, and a past President of the NYC Chapter. ASA-accredited in Fine Arts, his practice focuses on forensic valuations for dispute resolution and litigation. Charles got his B.A. in Art History from the University of Michigan, did postgraduate work at Sotheby's London, NYU, and Cooper-Hewitt, and taught Research Methods for Appraisers at NYU. He currently teaches the ASA PP204, Personal Property Valuation - The Legal and Commercial Environment at Northwestern University, the University of Georgia and Pratt. A frequent contributor to the ASA Personal Property Journal on legal issues, and admitted for expert testimony in several states, he has participated in seminars at the Association of the Bar of the City of New York and created courses for ALI-ABA, the continuing education project of the American Law Institute & the American Bar Association. Bob Connelly, who operates an antiques, auctions and appraisals business with his wife Sallie, has performed appraisals for the Cooperstown Baseball Hall of Fame, the Basketball Hall of Fame, and other sports museums. He has testified many times on the valuation of sports memorabilia and celebrity items. Some of his more interesting appraisal assignments include the original Heisman trophy, the oldest known soccer ball in the world, and Liberace's costumes. Paula Konikoff is an independent real estate appraiser and consultant whose practice focuses on the valuation of commercial, industrial and mixed use properties for litigation, arbitration and due diligence. An Urban Land Institute advisor, she is also Vice Chair of the Appraisal Standards Board (ASB) of the Appraisal Foundation. Ms. Konikoff, who holds a B.S. from Temple University and a J.D. from Villanova, will provide an overview of changes to the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP) for 2006. She will also give an update on the Scope of Work Project and other ASB activities.
