NEWS FROM NATIONAL

—Jain Lemos, ASPP Executive Director

Last month, I joined ASPP colleagues in Chicago for the Midwest chapter's annual all-day education and networking event. Along with our local board, ASPP notables including Mary Fran Loftus, Ed Whitley, Eva Tucholka, Danita Delimont and Savanah Stewart traveled in for the event.

The sessions featured updates from Chris Reed, Special Advisor to the Acting Register of Copyrights at the US Copyright Office; keywording nuances and tools with Paul H. Henning of StockAnswers and Jody Apap of KeywordSmart; and a preview of Encyclopaedia Britannica's Image Quest, a collection offering 1.5 million rights-cleared images ready for education use, from Michael Ross, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Education. All three of these excellent sessions were videotaped and will soon be available for viewing in the ASPP Member area.

The day before, many of us also attended Visual Connections and Robert Potter's (aka REP3) fun photo studio was a big hit. Thank you to our Midwest members who volunteered for shifts at our table!

Currently, National Pres Michael Masterson is on the road for ASPP, submitting his President's Corner column from the CEPIC congress in London.

These conferences and trade events remind me of the importance of face-to-face time with each other!

PRESIDENT'S CORNER

Hullo from London! We're halfway through the annual CEPIC congress, well attended this year by over 600 registrants from dozens of countries and companies. The week kicked off with the annual association meeting hosted this year by Eugene Mopsik from the ASMP. This confab gives organizations from across the world the chance to share information on their group's accomplishments and challenges, legal and copyright issues in their countries and the general state of the global industry.

I was particularly interested in a report from Christopher Shain from the Australian Institute of Professional Photography (AIPP) on the state of the industry there. Out of a population of 25 million there are 300,000 thousand "photographers" but only 10,000 who qualify as professionals. The riveting number though is (AUS) $13,000—a professional photographer's average income in Oz. Plunging revenues in our industry are clearly a worldwide concern.

Allen Murabayashi from PhotoShelter addressed that question in his keynote speech on Wednesday morning, arguing the case that content providers, primarily specialists, can still achieve distribution and success outside traditional stock distributors. He provided examples of photographers who've branded themselves, like ASPP member Chase Jarvis, as well as others who focus on niche areas (military imagery, bodybuilders, etc.). These individuals have achieved solitary success by using social media and targeting promotional campaigns to specific client bases.

CEPIC continues through Friday here in London with a bombardment of information on legal and legislative copyright issues, advances in metadata, global rights enforcement, orphan works and much more. Stay tuned!

Charter Partner In Transit Images Launches New Licensing Website Powered by EvoRights.

Evolve Images (www.evolveimages.com) announces the launch of the EvoRights™ Partner Program providing qualified photographers and agencies with free access to Evolve Images simplified pricing and licensing model. EvoRights™ gives image buyers quick access to rights and pricing information for rights managed images in as little as three clicks.

Recognizing the complexity and frustration buyers often face when licensing images, earlier this year Evolve Images introduced EvoRights as a simple way to price and license images. To encourage broad adoption among both buyers and distributors of images, Evolve is making the licensing model - including all usage options and pricing calculator-- available at no charge to qualified image licensing professionals in exchange for reciprocal links to and from participating partner websites.

“Once you find a great image for your project, we believe it should be easy to license,” said Mark Ippolito, CEO and Co-Founder of Evolve, a 20+ year veteran of the image licensing industry. “To accelerate adoption of our approach as an alternative to the complexity of traditional rights managed licensing, we wanted to make the EvoRights model available at no charge to any partners who share our vision and help us expand the market for rights managed images.”

As charter member of the EvoRights Partner Program, In Transit Images today announces the launch of their ecommerce image licensing website powered by EvoRights. “We believe passionately in the power of great images and have a goal to introduce new artists to a global audience,” says Bob Hendriks, Managing Director of In Transit Images. “Adopting the EvoRights model gives us the tools we need to simplify licensing of images and provides our artists with the opportunity to capture greater revenues through licensing of rights managed images globally.”

Learn more about EvoRights

Another fantastic issue of The Picture Professionalhas landed. We love our advertisers who make it all possible to bring you great images and information each quarter! Many have commented that the new cover design took them by surprise—most pleasantly!

One member wrote to us:

"I went to check the mail area at work today and saw this magazine on a shelf. I immediately thought, 'that looks pretty cool. Maybe it’s for me?' I had to laugh when I realized it was TPP. I didn’t even recognize it!
Next up is our first electronic version of the magazine, and this incarnation will be accessible for our members in May. We want to give a special shout-out to CORBIS IMAGES who has graciously become our magazine's digital edition sponsor for 2012.

DISCOUNTS AND FREE STUFF

OUT AND ABOUT

President Michael Masterson has the latest chapter event updates in this month's President's Corner. If you are attending Visual Connections in Chicago on April 26 at the Chicago Cultural Center, I will see you there along with Doug Brooks, our National Education Co-Chair, and our awesome Midwest chapter board and members. The following day we'll be at their All Day Education Event, "Charting a New Course: The Changing Landscape of Image Rights." Please reserve your space now via their Eventbrite registration page!

PLUS! ASPP and Visual Connections are delighted to have Robert E Potter III(aka REP3) on hand at the Chicago image expo to take your portrait. Robert will take a photo suitable for your FaceBook, LinkedIn or resumé; or, just for fun, he’ll be bringing a selection of costumes and disguises. Bring a business card and your photo will be emailed to you compliments of REP3, ASPP and Visual Connections.

Chris Farley got his job at SNL with a headshot that Robert sent at the request of Lorne Michaels. Bonnie Hunt once said that she never needed another headshot after the ones Potter crafted for her because, as a result of his images and her resulting fame, her agent now sends out a reel should someone not know her work. Who knows, maybe you’ll become famous too!

Please stop by our table to say hi, have Robert snap you and catch up on what's new at ASPP!

Final Note: Don't forget to opt-in to our new Find a Pro database. Instructions can be found by clicking this link.

ASPP MEMBERS | JASON LAURE
(www.Africatrek.co.za)

Coming of Age at Woodstock: Jason Lauré

April 1, 2012 thru June 1, 2012
Bethel Woods Museum
Bethel, New York

View Cape Town, South Africa-based photojournalist and ASPP member Jason Lauré's beautiful Woodstock photographs that will be on display in the Museum's Corridor Gallery April 1 through June 1, 2012.

The Museum at Bethel Woods presents a potpourri of smaller exhibits in the Corridor Gallery throughout the year that are curated by museum staff, and expand upon the themes of the main museum exhibit.

How do you get to Woodstock?
For photographer Jason Lauré, the road began at the 1967 Summer of Love scene in San Francisco. After covering the free spirited life of the young people like himself who were seeking to live in peace and harmony, he traveled east to New York. Like the waves of young people who were drawn to the music and the openness of communal living from all over the country, he found himself at the Woodstock Festival, in the tiny hamlet of Bethel, New York. Now, his remarkable on-the-spot record of that event can be seen at the new exhibition gallery at the Bethel Woods Museum of Art, on the site of the Festival.

For three days and nights, in the midst of a half million happy attendees, he says, “I roamed back and forth between the stage, where the best musicians of the era were performing, to the communal area where there were no boundaries, no rules, just a lot of peace-living folks. With an instinctive feeling for the music and the mood of the festival-goers, I captured both parts of the event. Day merged with night and then back again and all I can remember is that the music never stopped. It’s the defining moment of the Sixties.”

The record of those three days is now on view, in glorious color and dramatic black/white photographs at the Bethel Woods Museum.

PRESIDENT'S CORNER

Even though it's often believed that there are no seasons in Southern California, anyone who lives here will testify otherwise. And just like our new growth in spring, there are a profusion of ASPP programs here and nationwide for you. The New York chapter just held a smashing evening called "Covers to Billboards" featuring Monte Isom and Andrew Hetherington at the Apple Store in Chelsea on April 10. Coming up, Los Angeles is hosting a private tour of the new Herb Ritts show at the Getty Museum this Saturday, April 21. And there are two major education events next week in Chicago on April 27 and Seattle on April 28, both don't miss days if you're in either city.

Remember that ASPP members always receive a discounted or free admission to these special events and programs. That makes your membership even more valuable. We often offer new members a special discount to join us, but for a limited time we've extended that to renewing and expired members too. All you have to do is go to www.aspp.com and click on the red "JOIN NOW" link. Then simply use the promo code JOINNOW2012 to activate the discounted yearly membership of only $100.

Members should also have received an email from us regarding our upgraded "Find a Pro" feature, a free service only for our Accredited Members. This is one of the most popular destinations on our site, frequently used by anyone seeking talent in our industry. You need to opt in to our new version of this in order to be seen by prospective employers. Click here to read the instructions for updating your profile. If you need any help with this, just write us at webmanager@aspp.com.

NEWS FROM NATIONAL

—Jain Lemos, ASPP Executive Director

Thanks to all of the members who have reached out lately with their hands up to volunteer in a variety of ways at the chapter and national level. We truly can't make this organization thrive without you. Pres Michael Masterson is mentioning all of the wonderful programming going on around the nation in his column this month. Winter is over and it's time to step out of hibernation and join us at a program near you. To our international and more remotely-located members, I encourage you to contact me so ASPP can help support you with organizing a program or photo pro social near you.

A few of my priorities this spring are to help with the work of our website redesign and to get Find a Pro 2.0 up and running live. If you have tech skills and a few hours on your hands, please call me to help us undertake some of these projects. You will be rewarded for your participation! Website redesign is always a work in progress, so stay tuned as it evolves.

I am also very pleased to talk about ASPP'S role in providing information to our photo editor and researcher members about the archives of artists, galleries, organizations, and scholars around the world. Recently, ASPP's new magazine editor, April Wolfe, and designer, Ophelia Chong, helped 93-year-old master photographer Leland Lee's images come alive again after most of his physical archive was washed away in a flood, followed by a garage fire. ASPP and The Icon lab stepped in to provide the scanning of some of his remaining images. You'll be reading more about Leland and viewing his "iconic" work in Issue 1 of The Picture Professional, coming to your desk in just a few weeks. We also have a robust What's Hanging section this issue to help you discover some of this year's newest exhibitions and exhibit spaces.

PRESIDENT'S CORNER

ASPP chapters nationwide are on a roll with enticing events for members and non-members alike. Our Seattle chapter hosted a wildly successful event on March 8 dubbed "Portfolio Perfect: What Buyers and Agents Are Looking for Today." The sold-out evening featured an extraordinary panel including representatives from ASPP sponsors and supporters including Corbis, Starbucks, Publicis, Danita Delimont Stock Agency, Getty, Squint and Creature. The following week the New England chapter had an event at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston with a private tour of "Modernist Photography: 1910-1950." The insider perspective was an ASPP perk courtesy of chapter co-presidents Debra LaKind and Jennifer Riley in this case.

Looking ahead, the Los Angeles group, in a grand tradition, is having another one of its famous ASPP happy hours on Thursday, March 29 in Hollywood at the hipster spot, St. Felix. Join chapter co-president Jason Davis and other local nabobs (including Jain and me) there by RSVPing through Eventbrite. And if you're in Southern California mark Saturday, May 19 on your calendar for a wonderful event featuring Matt Armendariz whom you may know from his popular blog, Matt Bites.

The New York chapter will be unveiling a very special surprise taking place on Tuesday, April 10. Co-presidents Jessica Moon and Danilea Nilva can't yet reveal what it is, but can guarantee you that it will be a "don't miss" evening. Our Midwest chapter is putting the final touches on its annual education and networking event scheduled for Friday, April 27 in Chicago. Working from the theme "Charting a New Course: The Changing Landscape of Image Rights," it promises to be another memorable day. Having attended this particular event in the past, I can assure you, you will have an amazing time. The full day fee for members is only $25!

Apparently the Seattle team (tip of the hat to Mark Ippolito, et al) isn't tired yet so they've planned their own education event the next day on Saturday, April 28. Headlined "Connect, Communicate, Collaborate," it will focus on branding and marketing for photographers and creatives. Click here to register for this event now and receive the $15 early bird rate. And if you just catch the last flight from Chicago to Seattle that Friday night and you can do both!

Assuming the publisher thought the image had market potential he would normally would pay a one-time fee for the rights to make several thousand lithographic copies of an image and through retail contacts make the product available for customers to purchase. The Internet and Print-On-Demand (POD) technology has dramatically changed this market.

Too Many Images

I received a marketing email from Pixmac today encouraging people to look at their Easter Egg pictures in preparation for Easter.
ASPP ORPHAN SEARCH REQUEST

I work in the publications department at Gagosian Gallery, where we are currently producing a catalogue from our 2011 exhibition The Private Collection of Robert Rauschenberg. We would like to reproduce the attached image of Robert Rauschenberg, which I have found credited in several publications to the ASPP, specifically to the New York Photographers Association. I have not seen a specific photographer's name associated with this image.

The caption I have seen associated with the image is "Robert Rauschenberg in a lot on Water Street, New York ca. 1960". I have seen this in several Rauschenberg monographs but with no photographer name included. I am hopeful that I can obtain a high res file and permission to reproduce this in our forthcoming catalogue. Please contact me with any information you might have regarding the source of this image!

Thanks,

Identifying Orphans
If you recognize the image and can accurately identify its source, please reply to the person posting (not to ASPP). Note that some images posted may be cropped or flopped.

Send your Orphans to ASPP
If you have orphan images and are looking for their rightful owners, please send thumbnails with your contact details via email to PACA (orphansearch@pacaoffice.org). The email is validated by a PACA staff moderator and automatically circulated to all PACA members and affiliated associations including ASPP, who posts the request on our eNews Blog. All orphan requests posted on the eNews Blog are circulated to ASPP members and subscribers as well as pushed to Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and our RSS feed.

Copyright is retained by the creator/photographer; ASPP provides thumbnail images for reference and identification purposes, only.
