A benefit event raising money to provide mammograms for those in need on Dec. 3

Join the Auxiliary Board of A Silver Lining Foundation (ASLF) for its 3rd Annual Naughty or Nice Party , 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Friday, Dec. 3 at District Bar (170 W. Ontario, Chicago). Proceeds will fund no cost mammograms for uninsured and underinsured women. Tickets can be purchased online for $50 at www.asilverliningfoundation.org/tickets or at the door.

Guests who attend ASLF’s 3rd Annual Naughty or Nice Party not only will have the chance to enjoy four hours of premium bar, appetizers and live entertainment provided by the band ‘Sorry For Partying’, while supporting ASLF’s Buy A Mom A Mammogram program which funds no cost screening mammograms and diagnostic evaluation to uninsured and underinsured women at six partner hospitals.

Both the “naughty” and “nice” will have the chance to participate in a raffle and a great silent auction that will include items such as spa packages, entertainment items, and tickets to sporting events. A Silver Lining Foundation founder and breast cancer survivor Dr. Sandy Goldberg, Ph.D. moderates the upcoming Many Faces of Breast Cancer event, "Living with Advanced Breast Cancer" 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 16 at the Wyndham Chicago (633 N. St. Clair St., Chicago).

"Living with Advanced Breast Cancer," is an educational event focused on the unique needs and issues faced by women living with advanced breast cancer. Hear from leading medical professionals and inspirational women living with advanced disease, and learn about local resources and support. Leading medical professionals provide insight into the clinical and emotional impact of advanced breast cancer, information about the latest research, and more.

Joining Dr. Sandy, who also serves as NBC Chicago's Health and Nutrition Contributer, are Virginia Kaklamani, M.D., D.Sc., Director of Translational Breast Cancer Research and Co-Director of the Cancer Genetics Program, Division of Hematology/Oncology, Northwestern University; and Ruta Rao, M.D., Assistant Professor of Medicine, Division of Medical Oncology, Rush University Medical Center.

A Silver Lining Foundation Raises Nearly $200,000 at “A Sterling Event” October 2

Funds breast cancer resources, including potentially lifesaving screening mammograms, to uninsured and underinsured patients

There’s no better way to honor Breast Cancer Awareness Month than the 6th annual A Sterling Event, the black-tie fundraising gala hosted by A Silver Lining Foundation (ASLF) this past Saturday, Oct. 2 at the Hyatt Regency McCormick Place, which raised nearly $200,000 towards breast cancer resources. Founded by breast cancer survivor and NBC Chicago nutrition expert Dr. Sandy Goldberg, ASLF provides breast cancer resources, including treatment options and support services, to uninsured and underinsured patients.

At the event, Barbara and Robert Sherman were presented with the Evy Award, in recognition of their generous contributions to and unwavering support of ASLF, and for perpetuating the legacy of Goldberg’s late mother Evelyn “Evy” Goldberg. The Evy Award is given each year to an individual who lives by Evelyn Goldberg’s philosophy that, “We are all family and we have to help each other through the tough times.”

“The Shermans have supported A Silver Lining and have honored the philosophy by which my mother lived, and we’re grateful to have them as Silver Lining family members,” said Dr. Goldberg. “The support of the Shermans is appreciated not only by us at A Silver Lining, but by the nearly half a million patients, families and loved ones who have been helped by the programs of A Silver Lining Foundation.”

The event drew 350 guests, who enjoyed passed appetizers and cocktails, a thrilling live auction conducted by auctioneer David Goodman, a silent auction, a memorable performance by The Legendary Drifters, and the emceeing duo of KISS-FM’s Ty Bentli and NBC Chicago’s Ginger Zee.

Get ready for a fun filled evening in support of a breast cancer advocacy organization A Silver Lining Foundation (ASLF). Celebrating its sixth annual A Sterling Event Gala, this remarkable night begins with cocktails at 6:30 p.m., followed by dinner and dancing at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, October 2 at the Hyatt Regency McCormick Place (2233 S. Martin L. King Dr.).

Emceed by NBC Chicago’s Ginger Zee and KISS FM’s Ty Bentli, the evening includes a special performance by The Legendary Drifters. Hard work and commitment to a non-profit organization does pay off! Dr. Sandy Goldberg is receiving an honorary plaque as runner-up for the 2010 Patricia Milner-Sachs Heart of a Survivor Award at the 6th Annual Celebration of Survivorship presented by the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Center. The event is from 5:30 p.m. – 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 17 at the Shriner’s Silver Garden Events Center (24350 Southfield Rd., Southfield, Mich.).

Dr. Sandy Goldberg will be honored as a runner-up for the Patricia Milner-Sachs Heart of a Survivor Award because of her hard work and commitment to other cancer survivors in the community through A Silver Lining Foundation. This award is given to an outstanding cancer survivor who exemplifies caring compassion and devotion and goes above and beyond to help other cancer, survivors on their journey. A nomination for this award is an enormous honor.

The Celebration of Survivorship, presented by Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Center, recognizes cancer survivors who raise awareness of cancer prevention and help empower lives. The event will be an evening of hope, humor, harmony and honor with special guest speaker Scott Burton who is a cancer survivor, author, comedian and world class juggler and Paul Gross, a local meteorologist and cancer survivor.

A Silver Lining Foundation Receives Grant from Komen Chicago Affiliate

The Chicagoland Area Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® has awarded a $75,000 grant to A Silver Lining Foundation (ASLF) to provide underinsured and uninsured patients with information concerning cancer resources, treatment options and support services, funds no cost mammograms, and sponsors community outreach health fairs providing multiple health screenings.

At ASLF, the grant from Komen for the Cure will support ASLF’s Buy A Mom A Mammogram™ program, an initiative to fund screening mammograms and diagnostic evaluation services for Chicago’s underserved community. The program will also support the creation of an additional community outreach health fair hosted by ASLF.

“It’s an honor to be recognized from such a distinguished organization as the Susan G. Komen for the Cure, which has a mission so similar to that of A Silver Lining Foundation,” said ASLF founder and breast cancer survivor Dr. Sandy Goldberg. “We are grateful for the support of the foundation, and with this grant, we hope to continue our mission to ensure dignified, respectful and equal access to quality cancer education and services for all.”

Susan G. Komen for the Cure is the world’s largest breast cancer organization, and the Chicagoland Affiliate is one of 125 Affiliates on the front lines dedicated to ending breast cancer in their communities. Komen Affiliates fund innovative programs that help women and men overcome the cultural, social, education and financial barriers to breast cancer screening and treatment.

“Helping others is always a good way to celebrate the holidays, bringing cheer and making you feel good,” says Dr. Sandy Goldberg, founder of A Silver Lining Foundation (ASLF). The organization’s Auxiliary Board sponsors its second annual “Naughty or Nice” party from 8:30 p.m. until 11:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 4 at Zella, (1983 N. Clybourn Ave., Chicago; 773-549-2910).

The event raises money to fund no cost mammograms for uninsured and underinsured individuals, and raises awareness of the need for early detection of breast cancer.

“A Silver Lining Foundation’s Auxiliary Board happily hosts our second annual holiday party to provide a potentially life-saving mammograms and related outreach and resource services for uninsured and underinsured individuals,” says Dr. Goldberg. “By celebrating the holidays and enjoying time with friends at Zella, we have the opportunity to make a huge difference in someone’s life. Dr. Sandy Named a 2009 Purpose Prize Fellow

Dr. Sandy Goldberg, founder of A Silver Lining Foundation (ASLF), has been named a 2009 Purpose Prize fellow, an honor for social entrepreneurs over 60 who are using their experience and passion to take on society’s biggest challenges. Now in its fourth year, the six-year, $17 million program is the nation’s only large-scale investment in social innovators in the second half of life.

Dr. Sandy Goldberg, the founder of the Chicago-based A Silver Lining Foundation, was named a Fellow for providing cancer resource information, treatment options, quality of life services and no-cost mammograms to uninsured and underinsured individuals.

The fellows underscore a trend in entrepreneurialism later in life. According to studies by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, the 55-64 age group is the most active in creating new ventures. Counter to stereotype, people ages 20-34, the study found, are the least entrepreneurial.

“More than ever, the problems facing our communities, country and world call out for creative solutions,” said Marc Freedman, co-founder of The Purpose Prize and author of Encore: Finding Work That Matters in the Second Half of Life. “Fortunately, we don’t run out of ideas as we age.

“Like so many others in this new stage of life between the end of midlife careers and the beginning of true old age, The Purpose Prize fellows combine creativity, experience and passion with a desire to do something bigger than themselves,” Freeman continued.

“Now, more than ever before, is the time to address the needs of our fellow community members and provide cancer related resource information and related services they would not have access to otherwise. We strive to give everyone a silver lining in life,” said Goldberg. “It is an honor to be recognized for the efforts of A Silver Lining Foundation by the Purpose Prize.”

The Purpose Prize supports Fellows by helping develop their capacity, linking them with funders and venture philanthropists and connecting them to other social innovators over 60. It is part of the Encore Careers campaign run by Civic Ventures, a national think tank on boomers, work and social purpose. Funding for The Purpose Prize comes from The Atlantic Philanthropies and the John Templeton Foundation.

The Purpose Prize is a program of the Encore Careers campaign, which aims to engage millions of boomers in encore careers combining social impact, personal meaning and continued income in the second half of life.

A Silver Lining Foundation Receives $25,000 Donation from Jewel-Osco

A Silver Lining Foundation (ASLF) raised more than $170,000 this past Saturday, October 3 at the fifth annual A Sterling Event, the foundation's an annual black-tie gala at the Hyatt Regency McCormick Place. Founded by breast cancer survivor and NBCChicago nutrition expert Dr. Sandy Goldberg, ASLF provides breast cancer resources, including treatment options and support services, to uninsured and underinsured patients.

During the gala, Jewel-Osco president Keith Nielsen was presented with the Evy Award, in recognition of Jewel-Osco’s contributions to ASLF and for perpetuating the legacy of Goldberg's late mother Evelyn “Evy” Goldberg. The Evy Award is given each year to an individual who lives by Evelyn Goldberg’s philosophy that, “We are all family and we have to help each other through the tough times.”

Nielsen then presented Goldberg with a $25,000 check on behalf of Jewel-Osco to support the programs of ASLF. Jewel-Osco has supported ASLF in the past by holding events to pre-qualify women in Jewel-Osco stores for no-cost screening mammograms and through generous contributions to ASLF’s Buy A Mom A Mammogram™ program, which funds the mammograms.
“In his unwavering support of A Silver Lining, Keith has honored the philosophy that my mother lived by, and we are thrilled to work with him and Jewel-Osco,” Goldberg said after the check presentation. “Jewel-Osco’s continued support is appreciated not only by us at A Silver Lining, but by the thousands of patients we have helped in the past and will help in the future.”

Underwritten by Robert and Barbara Sherman for the fourth consecutive year, 100 percent of funds raised at the gala, including proceeds from the live auction and silent auction and check from Jewel-Osco, will support ASLF’s three programs.

The event drew 300 guests, who enjoyed passed appetizers and cocktails, a live auction and silent auction, vocal stylings of famed cabaret singer Nan Mason, the beats of Rhythym City and the hosting duo of KISS-FM’s Ty Bentli and NBC-5’s Ginger Zee.

The energetic live auction was one of the best live auctions in recent Chicago history, led by noted professional auctioneer David Goodman and raising more than $60,000. Coveted packages included once in a lifetime opportunities, like a five-night trip to Hawaii with airfare included; a trip for two to New York’s Spring 2010 Fashion Week; a chauffeur-driven outing to a taping of the “Oprah Winfrey Show,” followed by a private shopping trip at Bloomingdale’s; and a New Year’s trip to a private Tuscan farmhouse in Cortona, Italy.
