Horizontal Stripes

Of all the the fashion 'must-nots' that I've picked up throughout the years (amongst don't mix brown and black, avoid navy and black, coordinate rather than match, don't wear crop tops and mini skirts, never show cleavage and thighs etc etc) the 'avoid horizontal stripes' rule is going straight out of the window this summer.

Does anyone else remember CosmoGirl telling us to avoid the horizontal stripe and instead one should opt for the vertical to elongate one's frame and flatten curves? This editorial featured in last months Harper's BAZAAR US proves them wrong. I like.

I'm not sure what the song is about...possibly singlehandedly freeing a nation from the tyranny and oppression of an evil dictator through song. But like I said...I'm not too sure. I do know that if we don't win, it will be purely because Simon didn't break it down and rap before the final chorus. This is the official video...

Although I prefer the BBC recording as I feel their attire represents the unpredictability of British weather- we get a bit of bare chest (Duncan), a snood (Anthony) and every now and again a pair of Aviators can be seen worn by Simon.

I left Facebook exactly one month ago. It was amidst the drama of the Student Union elections and I was growing increasingly irritated at the massive misuse of the social media site for student politics. People who I considered my friends were littering my wall with generic statements (which they had copied and pasted from wall to wall) and links urging me to vote for them, inviting me to events that weren't really events but simply another reminder to vote for them, including me in mass threads in which they (you guessed it!) urged everyone to vote for them. Quite frankly I was annoyed.

On top of that, it's my final year and already getting annoyed at the mass of people fretting over their dissertation that they were yet to begin, on the opposite side of the spectrum a impudent my FBFs's (Facebook friends) decided it was appropriate to post regular updates with regards to their dissertation progression...including word counts.

I'd had enough of relying on a website to keep me in the loop of the lives of the people I care about (and don't care about, come to think of it.) I was bored of the twang of guilt that I felt every time that I declined a friend request from that girl who sits across the room from me once a week, that I've never spoken to or deleted that guy who I partied a little with in first year who's only connection to me now is sometimes 'liking' my inane status updates.

I thought it was sad that I found out about my older brother's new girlfriend or the progress of my little brother's university applications at the same time as hundreds of other strangers and mild acquaintances. It hurt me a little that people who were supposed to be my closest friends wished me happy birthday on my Facebook wall, only for it to drown in the sea of strangers saying exactly the same thing. Yet I was guilty of all of these things.

So I left the book and now communicate with people only by phone, text message, email or face to face and it's great. I might be missing out on social events but I guess if people really want me to attend their party then they will find a way to let me know about it. I hope this lasts a long time.
