When you feel depressed, you just want to lie on the sofa while the television drones on in the background. You aren’t really watching anything that takes too much energy. But you don’t even feel like reaching for the remote to change channels.

The last thing you want to do is go outside – but it’s one of the best cures for depression and is exactly what you need to do. When you’re feeling depressed the challenge is acting against what you feel most inclined to do. Yet if you get moving, you’ll find surprising relief from the stress and depression that seems to choke you.

Repeated medical studies show that exercise is necessary to regain a sense of self-control. What’s more, while you exercise you’re thinking of something besides what’s stressing you. It also provides you with a better night’s sleep, which helps your immune system rally against your stress factors.

One thing you don’t want to do when you feel stressed to the point of depression is to place too many demands on yourself. You’ll feel overwhelmed. So you have to start with some simple, specific steps, such as:

1. Begin with basic self-care. Set your alarm clock and get out of bed without lying there thinking about it. Then go directly to take a shower and get dressed in clean clothes. No pajamas – real clothes.

2. Set a place with real dishes at the table for your breakfast. Even if you only eat a bagel and drink juice, don’t do it standing up in the kitchen. Sit down and eat as if you were in a restaurant. And if you have good china, use it.

3. Choose one activity outside the house to complete before lunch. That might be something as simple as walking around the block or going outside to water the flowers.

4. Drive to a nearby mall or large discount store. Start at one end and walk up and down every aisle. When you get to the other side, start aisle-walking again until you’re back where you started. Then you can go back and look at anything that seemed interesting. The key is to get moving.

5. Go to a park in the late afternoon. Find the swing set and swing. It’s amazing how this activity makes you feel like a child who is happy to be outdoors. If you want to, slide down the slide or climb on the jungle gym.

Exercise to relieve stress and depression doesn’t have to mean marathon training or aerobics. You don’t even have to go to the gym unless you’re ready to go. Even simple activities will make a big difference in your mood.

If you allow it to depression hurts every part of your life and lifestyle. Use these depression cures to get off the couch and back living the life you deserve.

In the past I found that as my life got busier I began feeling overwhelmed by stress and its accompanying anxiety.

I’m sure that you understand that having anxiety and stress in your life is as normal as the sun rising in the morning, but when you don’t deal with it properly it can lead to severe physical complications and even mental disorders. Stress can come from your work or your personal life. When you’re stressed out for too long it can lead to nervousness, anxiety, irritability and even depression. These problems can lead to high blood pressure, digestive issues and lower immunity to disease. The long term affects of anxiety and stress also include insomnia.

Because stress is such a big issue in many people’s lives, especially now, I’d like to give you 10 quick anxiety and stress relief tips that I’ve found are excellent for dealing with stress . Hopefully you can use them to help lower the stress in your life too.

1. Make Your Choices Simple Ones

Life is already extremely complicated so make the simple choice. Simplifying your choices is an easy method of dealing with stress. Some people buy the Sunday paper and cut out all the coupons. Then they run to every store in town just to save 5 cents on a loaf of bread. Not only does this waste time and money (gas as well as wear and tear on your car) it makes your life so much more complicated. So, don’t make things harder than they need to be, if there is an easier way to do something, do it. Life is about choices, and choosing to make your life less complicated is a simple way of dealing with stress.

2. Exercise

Of all the stress reducing habits I’ve created in my life, exercise has been the best one to help me relieve stress and tension. Although I enjoy all types of exercise, I’ve found that Yoga, Tai Chi and Qigong breathing also help my mind to focus. I’ve found these practices help me to relieve my stress and anxiety while improving my overall health.

3. Meditation and Prayer

When it comes to simple things you can do to relieve stress and anxiety there is almost none better than prayer and meditation. Some of the most relaxed individuals I have ever met or read about pray or meditate regularly. Set aside some time to just be alone and self reflect. Sit in a quiet spot, let your mind relax and let the stress and anxiety in your day to day life just drift away.

4. Massage

I don’t know about you but when I’m tense I can feel it in my muscles, especially in my upper back and neck. I’m certain this isn’t healthy. Maybe this happens to you too. If it does, a nice massage can work the knots out and it’s so easy, because all you really have to do is lie down and let someone else do the all work for a change. So if your body is tense get a massage, it can help relieve your stress and anxiety and help your body feel normal again.

5. Sleep

Nothing adds to insomnia like stress. If you’re tossing and turning due to stress and anxiety and not getting enough sleep, I can guarantee that this is adding to your stress level. When you get enough sleep you feel refreshed and ready to go. It can also relieve a lot of muscle tension, and it’s easy to do. Just lay back, breath deep and relax.

6. Deep Breathing

When you’re stressed I can almost guarantee you don’t breathe correctly. To relieve these affects of stress and anxiety, take some slow, deep breaths. This can quickly help reduce the stress in your body. Of course, don’t try to do this when you are hurrying to a meeting. Just before you go to the meeting, take a few moments for yourself and take some slow, deep breaths. This will allow you to refocus while relieving your stress and anxiety.

7. Writing

If stress and anxiety are bogging you down, for instant relief try writing about your problems. Most experts agree that stress is mostly mental. Writing about a stressful situation can often get it out of your mind and onto a page. When I was stressed this really worked for me and also helped me to pinpoint where my stress was coming from.

8. Soothing Music

Just by putting on music with slow rhythms and relaxing sounds, you can quickly put yourself into a more relaxed state of mind. This also works with natural sound recordings.

9. Friends

If you are stressed out, take some time out of your busy life to be with your friends. Being around good friends can be the perfect way to relive your stress and anxiety. Laughter is the greatest medicine of all, and spending time with the ones you love can help you to laugh and put all of life’s stress into its proper perspective.

10. Pets

For those of you that have a pet let me ask, is there anything more relaxing than petting your dog, or cat? How about talking with your bird? The thing about pets is that they listen, don’t judge, and ask for nothing in return.

There you have it, 10 simple stress and anxiety relief techniques that you can use for dealing with the stress of your everyday life. Life is too short to be anxious and stressed all the time so start using these easy stress and anxiety relief methods today. You’ll be glad you did!

Fifty years ago, had you told someone you were stressed out, they wouldn’t have known what you were talking about and might even have questioned your knowledge of grammar! But that’s all changed. Rare is the individual today who doesn’t get stressed out at least once a day. Chronic stress and anxiety can lead to severe health problems, particularly with the ‘type A’ personality. Besides, stress produces unpleasant feelings in the body, headaches, as well as causing you to snap at others without reason. While your doctor might prescribe a medication to calm you down, it’s always best to avoid prescription medicines if you can.

I’d like to offer you five natural anxiety and stress relief techniques that you can put to use today. They all work, so you can pick and choose as the mood strikes you. Of course, if you’re really stressed out, use all five!

1. Exercise! Physical exercise of any kind is one of the great treatments to relieve stress and anxiety. It doesn’t matter what the weather is either. If it’s raining, get out the vacuum and give that rug a good vacuuming. Go over and over that rug until its sparkling clean. It’s one of the great natural ways to relieve stress. Or if there’s a spot in the yard that needs to be weeded, go to it, weed it within an inch of it’s life. Other physical tasks, like cleaning out the hall closet, can prove sufficiently distracting so that you’ll be automatically diverted from whatever got you all stressed out. You also get a great deal of satisfaction from how clean it is.

2. Journal writing is another one of the great natural ways to relieve stress. You don’t need to be a writer to take advantage of this treatment. Maybe it’s your boss or your spouse who jumped on your case about whatever. Biting your tongue is what is causing this stress, so now is the time to express yourself, without starting a fight! Give that so-and-so all of your thoughts on the topic in your (private) journal. Works like a charm!

3. Lavender is an old time natural way to relieve stress and is especially effective for stress headaches. You can take several avenues to use this remedy. You can take a nap, lying on a lavender filled pillow, or you can make or buy a lavender filled eye cover. You can also take a few whiffs of essential oil of lavender and/or dab a drop on each of your temples. Lavender is an natural and easy to use method for anxiety and stress relief.

4. Some treatments for anxiety and stress relief should be interactive. Here’s a variation on the journal writing entries. Write an email to a good friend and vent. Tell your friend up front to take it with a grain of salt. After all, we shouldn’t take life too seriously too often. Vent as much as you want. By the time you’re done, you’ll probably feel better. You can send it or not, as your mood dictates. Ask them for a funny joke or cartoon in their response. This way, you can get a laugh too. It’s good for the soul.

5. Here’s the be all and end all of natural treatments for anxiety and stress: every time you feel yourself getting stressed out, make a note, in your journal, of what triggered the event. After just a few weeks, you’ll begin to see a pattern. Do you constantly worry about money? Your weight? Does someone at work drive you crazy? Not enough hours in the day? Once you’ve discovered your common stress triggers, implement a plan to eliminate them. Make a strict budget. Lose weight. Ignore, or make friends with that work mate. Whatever works.

These five natural ways to relieve stress do work. If you need some anxiety and stress relief then try them. They work and you’ll like them!

When I first started getting these symptoms I could make them go away, but after a while I found myself less able to handle the stress, getting more aggravated and unable to sleep. Soon after I couldn’t handle the stress at all and I found myself tired and exhausted, barely able to navigate through my life on a daily basis. I was on stress overload.

Maybe you’ve felt like I did, so you decide to go to your doctor. What happens? Your doctor tells you that you need to relax. Relax? You don’t have time to relax, but I bet you don’t have time for a heart attack either. So you’re probably asking “How can I learn to relax?” Try relaxation training.

Relaxation training is made up of techniques you can learn and practice on your own. Once you learn them you can practice them anywhere. Here are some things that can help you learn to relax and stay calm.

Psychotherapy – Often doctors will refer you to a psychologist or mental health counselor. This doesn’t mean that you’re “mentally ill.” These professionals can help you with stress and anxiety relief techniques that help you stay calm.

Mental health professionals are also trained to teach you visualization, stress inoculation and other techniques that help you manage your stress. These are also therapies that you might be able to learn on your own using DVD and CD tutorials.

Hypnosis – Since hypnosis is one of my specialties I must admit I am prejudice toward its use. In my opinion, the reason you should go to a hypnotist is for dealing with stress. And don’t be worried about all the urban legends surrounding hypnosis. Contrary to false beliefs, you won’t suddenly quack like a duck or howl at the moon. Today these types of techniques are often used by medical and psychological professionals for stress and pain management. For most people you’ll learn all you need to know within a few sessions to be able to do this on your own.

Yoga – Take a series of classes to learn the basic Yoga movements. This ancient technique involves the mind and body so completely that you relax, stretch and develop flexibility all at the same time.

You can get DVDs and books to help you with the moves at home but rather than practice constantly by yourself alone, I would suggest scheduling a Yoga class at least twice a week and pre-pay. That will motivate you to get out of the house or the office and get into an environment better suited for the relaxation of practicing Yoga.

Tai Chi – I have been practicing tai Chi for many years. Tai Chi is an ancient Chinese martial art that combines patterns of slow movements with deep breathing. In addition to helping you relax, Tai Chi improves your balance and your cardiovascular system. Many martial arts schools provide a Tai Chi class as part of their curriculum.

Qigong (Chi Kung) – I was introduces to Qigong over 20 years ago. Much slower paced than Tai Chi, Qigong also belongs to the Chinese martial arts. Using these very simple deep breathing and movement techniques, people all over the world have experienced a reduction in stress levels while improving their overall health.

Art or Photography – You don’t have to know anything about either of these to enjoy them. Forget perfectionism and just put some paint on a canvas or shoot some pictures. Go outdoors to a tranquil park or garden to practice your craft. You aren’t trying to become proficient – just enjoy what you create. The time spent studying your subjects and looking at the results is what counts. Being creative, especially if this is completely different than your usual work, can be highly relaxing.

Act like a kid – this is one of my favorite ways of dealing with stress and also gets me the most looks. Choose a day twice a month when you act like a kid. Go to the park and swing. Draw on the driveway with colored chalk. Watch funny movies in your pajamas or go to a kid’s matinee. Do something that is carefree and just plain fun.

Once you get your stress level down, keep up your relaxation training or you’ll be back in the same stress overload situation again. It’s one of the best ways to reduce your anxiety and give you stress relief. It may sound silly, but relaxing is something many people have to learn because it doesn’t come easily to them. Dealing with stress doesn’t have to be hard – just go do it!

As John Lennon once said, “Life is what happens as we are busy making plans.” I believe that’s a good philosophy, life will always add its two cents. The problem is that those cents keep mounting up, and when they do you can find yourself looking for just a tiny bit of relief, somewhere – anywhere. A place that where you feel safe from the storms of life. Everyone needs a little spot that qualifies as their castle, a place to retreat and regroup, a place to relieve their daily stress and anxiety.

Organizing your bedroom is a great method of dealing with stress and keeping you sane and happy. After all, you do spend a third of your life sleeping there. Additionally, if you’re like many people you may kick back for a half hour after you wake up with a cup of coffee and a magazine before facing the world. Also, in the evening, it’s an excellent place for a relaxing read and a cup of cocoa.

Your bedroom is an important ‘nesting’ spot. Think of it as a retreat space, ideally a clutter and stress free zone. When you think about it this way, organizing your bedroom becomes a priority and can provide you with an instant getaway, without ever leaving home.

First, you want to identify your needs. Organizing your bedroom should be centered around creating an environment similar to what you’d expect of a room at a nice hotel. Now you won’t be getting room service but you can make the atmosphere close. Nice hotels provide lots of big, fluffy pillows, a nice looking quilt, a big armchair and a side table where you can drink your coffee or tea. Now stock it with a couple of magazines or a book you’re reading. The ting to think about is comfort and convenience when organizing your bedroom.

When creating your bedroom organizing plan, think along the lines of what you’d like to have at your fingertips when you’re having a ‘bad hair’ day, or are down with a cold or the flu. If you enjoy sipping coffee or tea in bed, stock a dresser drawer with coffee, a few filters, tea, and maybe some cocoa for those cold rainy nights. If you really like to laze around, find a spot for a 2-cup coffeemaker or a place to store water. Determine whatever provisions that allow you to just hang out in your bedroom, that would help you relieve your stress anxiety and relax.

Look around your bedroom and identify annoying aspects, like accumulated clutter. For example, if you habitually toss loose change on your dresser, let magazines pile up, or scatter pens and receipts wherever they drop, clean it up. Find a big bowel or a basket to dump the change in. Pens can be placed in a coffee cup and if make a habit of filing or tossing receipts right away you won’t have them covering your dresser and wherever else you drop them. To feel better and relieve your daily stress and anxiety, get rid of the mess. It’s not conducive to a stress free atmosphere!

You don’t need to add to your stress by spending a lot of money on your organizing plan. Instead of new furniture try to reorganize what you have presently. Sometimes just changing things around is all it takes. Maybe a slightly different view from your windows will let you appreciate the view. Buy a couple of fluffy pillows that don’t cost much. Perhaps you should go to the local discount store and treat yourself to a new bedspread or window coverings.

If you’re tired of the artwork you have on the walls, change things around. Visuals are extremely important to your mood. Make sure your lighting is conveniently placed and adequate for its purpose.

The last task you need to think about when organizing your bedroom isn’t so much fun. Clean up and organize your closet and every drawer in your room. Once it’s done, you just need to keep it that way! Form a habit of putting things away. You’ll be amazed at how great it is to never have to search out keys, jewelry and that other shoe. Just the savings in time and lack of frustration cuts down your stress and makes every day run more smoothly.

There you have it, a bedroom organization plan you can use to relieve your daily stress and anxiety. It is possible to create a stress free zone. Just put these suggestions to work and soon you’ll have a plan where you can leave your troubles behind and enjoy the peace and relaxation you deserve!

From major depression like being incapacitated, to symptoms like feeling a little blue, many people have been affected by this modern day malady.

Understand that not all kinds of depression are created equal. Some people have legitimately unbalanced hormones which can cause them to have major depression symptoms. Other people are in a rut or sorts, sad about the loss of a relationship, a death in the family or losing a job. Then there are also some teenagers, for whom the default setting is “depressed.”

The key here is to recognize that each of these states is different. While medication might be the best choice for some of the major depression symptoms, this is often not the case. That’s the importance of seeing a doctor or mental health professional if you are experiencing symptoms of depression. You need to know if you’re actually biologically depressed.

I recently read an article in the Bloomberg Times that said one in ten Americans are taking antidepressants. This is double the percentage of people taking them in 1996. During the same period the use of psychotherapy has declined because of insurance company restrictions on payments. So if you go to your doctor with symptoms, don’t look to them to supply you with any natural cures for depression. Since medication is more “cost effective”, and easier to get approved, it is typically used for people who are “clinically depressed”. The problem is that it often isn’t needed or even helpful. Does this help you understand why we need medical insurance reform?

Here’s a story that I personally observed that illustrates this point perfectly. A friend of mine recently was feeling “depressed”. It was probably because her life had recently changed. Her daughter had moved away to college that semester. Someone told her she might have a chemical imbalance due to aging. She went to the doctor, who tested her for any imbalances and found nothing out the ordinary. However since my friend clearly had “major depression symptoms”, she was prescribed Prozac to help her regulate her moods.

It didn’t work. Why? It didn’t work because she wasn’t clinically depressed. She was simply a little bummed out and blue that her life was changing and her daughter had left home. She wasn’t happy with where she was. The problem is that instead of attempting to make some changes in her life to compensate, she took what seemed to be the easy cure, drugs. Those drugs did nothing to cure her depression.

Before you really go off the deep end by taking drugs that mess with your biochemistry, a better step is to take a good look at yourself and try to understand what’s going on in your life. Are you really, truly clinically depressed? Or are you just looking for an “easy” way to make your life into something else?

I would venture to say that for most people it’s the latter. I say this because we as a society have been conditioned to reach for the “magic pill” instead of looking for real solutions to our problems. Do you remember “Brings relief faster?” or “What a relief it is?” These are advertisements for over the counter medications that could make you feel better “instantly”. We have been conditioned to believe that cures come in a bottle instead of having to do any work like exercising, eating right and finding a purpose in life.

Now, don’t misunderstand me. I’m not saying that “depression” with a big “D” doesn’t exist. For many people, there are legitimate chemical imbalances that they need to address using medication. That’s why it’s so important to uncover the cause of your depression. If you really do have a chemical imbalance you may not be able to obtain a permanent cure for depression with changes in exercise and diet. Some people do need chemical treatment. The issue here is that most people don’t!

Unfortunately for some people, even with chemicals, depression isn’t one-hundred percent curable. At the moment there is no scientific cure for depression. However for most people it is manageable. So whether it’s through diet and exercise or pharmaceuticals, managing your depression is the first step towards living a life where you’re in command.

You don’t have let depression be in command of you. You can take some steps starting today to change the way your feel. Most people can take the natural route to make a major change in their depression symptoms. If you need to take medication as a cure for your depression then by all means use it. The key is to take action, get started. Don’t wait. Life’s too short to go around being clinically depressed.

It doesn’t matter if you are at work or at home, with so many tasks to do and so many people to take care of, it can be easy to forget to slow down and take care of yourself.

Deep breathing and meditation are extremely beneficial ways to relieve the stress you face on an on-going basis. They are used by millions of people around the world. These methods are also one of the easiest and most effective treatments for anxiety, they can lower your blood pressure, and can help to improve your immune system. Deep breathing and meditation have been used successfully help people stop smoking as well as get rid themselves of other bad habits.

I have used deep breathing and meditation as a quick way to relieve stress for many years. In fact, I found that it was when I didn’t meditate and exercise daily that I experienced the greatest amount of stress.

One of the benefits of deep breathing and meditation is that they promote an inner balance and feeling of well-being. Using them also revitalizes your mind and body. You don’t need much to practice deep breathing and meditation, just a quiet room. Sit either on the floor or on a chair and begin the relaxation process by focusing on a sound of your own making, or an object of you choice. As you sit quietly, allow you mind to concentrate on your breathing pattern as you make your sound softly or focus on the object you’ve chosen.

Once you are relaxed, you will find yourself listening to your breathing. Pay attention to your breath. As you breathe in and exhale deeply, you will be able to slow down your breathing to the point where you are in a deep meditative state. After your meditative session is over you will feel renewed and you’ll find that your anxiety and stress has dissipated.

It’ll take a few sessions to get it down just right, but it is worth the effort. After practicing for just a few weeks you find that you have a lot less from stress and anxiety on those days you’re being pulled in twenty different directions.

Here’s a key point. In order for deep breathing and meditation to really help, you need to practice on a daily basis. Just like anything else, the more you practice, the quicker and easier you will be able to reach the meditative state.

There are also some great exercises that incorporate breathing meditation into their practice, such as Yoga and Qigong. I practice both of these daily and I have found that they have an immediate and positive effect on my entire body as well as my mind. They are also an excellent method to wake you up in the morning.

One great thing about these practices is that you can utilize them at home, at work, in your car, or on a subway or bus. Let’s say you are driving home and are slowed down by some heavy traffic or an accident that keeps you stuck for an hour or more. Instead of worrying about how long it will take and getting all worked up, try using deep breathing to stay calm. If stress begins to build at work you can also use meditative breathing either while sitting at your desk or, even better, at a quiet place where you can sit and practice deep breathing and meditate alone. The trick is to use it, because it does work.

No matter what you are doing during the course of your day, take ten minutes to meditate in order to relieve whatever stress or anxiety you are under. Just as you take care of others’ needs, it is important to concentrate on your own health as well. Take a little time to practice deep breathing and meditation daily. It’s a great way of overcoming stress and taking back control of your life.

Do you find yourself constantly stressed? If you’re not careful, stress, anxiety and worry can take over your life. Like it or not, constant or chronic stress and worry can make you sick. The good news there are simple methods for anxiety and stress relief, that you can put to use right away.

The first step to relieve your stress and anxiety is figuring out exactly what’s stressing you. Once you’ve figured out what it is, ask yourself, “is this something I can change or is it something I have no control over?” By determining the root of your anxiety and stress, you are better prepared to put your anxiety and stress relief program into practice.

For example, if you’re feeling anxious and stressed about the prospect of losing your job, you can take control of this worry. Write down your options and begin to take action. Maybe you can decide to work harder to prove that you’re an indispensable part of the team or maybe you can start searching for a new job. The biggest thing is that you take action. Taking action is one of the surest ways to relieve your stress and anxiety.

When you take the time to examine the facts you’ll find that there are plenty of situations in your life that you can change with a little effort. By uncovering the root of your stress and anxiety you can develop a plan to turn them into something positive. Then when you put your plan into action you can make the changes you want.

Here are 6 stress and anxiety relief tips you can start using today.

1. Understand the root of your anxieties. When you are feeling stressed and anxious, write down exactly what you are doing at the moment so that you can figure out what’s causing your stress and anxiety. Once you have determined the cause you can then figure out ways to relieve your stress and anxiety. Understanding the root cause is a key factor to relieve your stress and anxiety and feeling better about yourself and your current situation.

2. Breathe, really breathe. Once you’ve pinpointed the things you need to change, sit back and take time to breathe. You see, when you are stressed out you don’t breathe properly. This form of relaxation is excellent for stress reduction and can help you calm your racing heart and give you peace of mind.

Breathing shallowly and rapidly can give you a panic or anxiety attack. You can control this. Relaxation is a natural part of deep breathing. Take a few moments to put your mind in a state of relaxation by breathing some slow, deep breaths. Not only will this relieve your stress and anxiety, it will help you regain your focus. Deep breathing is one of the best anxiety and stress relief skills you can learn and apply.

3. Visualization – One of the things I use for all the time for managing my and my clients stress is visualization and hypnosis. You see visualization and hypnosis have been shown to be some of the most effective ways to overcome stress and anxiety.

Since you use visualization every day for everything from “seeing” your route home while still sitting in your chair at work to “seeing” a recipe turn into a cake as you mix the ingredients, why not use your power of visualization to relieve your stress?

To begin, choose a quiet, dark space in your home. Light some candles if you’d like, and close your eyes. Imagine yourself in your ideal situation, a place for you that you can enjoy in a relaxed manner. Feel your calmness coming over your body. Visualize relaxation and let your body go limp. Using this stress reduction technique helps you let go of your cares and worries. Now visualize yourself feeling better as you reduce the size and source of your stress. Don’t you feel better already? Of course you do! Positive visualization is one of the most powerful ways to relieve stress and anxiety while moving you in a positive direction.

4. Use affirmations. An affirmation is simply a positive statement you say about yourself. Affirmations can quickly change the way you habitually talk to yourself while improving your world view. An additional benefit is that positive affirmations can help to reverse the negative messages about you that have been constantly coming into your mind.

Positive statements, repeated over and over in your head are excellent stress coping skills. For example, when you start to feel stressed, you can repeat something like: “I let go of unnecessary stress in my life to make way for peace.” or “I deserve peace and recognize its value for my health, productivity and relationships.”

You will find that repeating positive thoughts in your mind you will go a long way to help you relieve your stress and anxiety. You body and emotions will follow the lead of your mind.

5. Develop good health habits. What would happen if you put contaminated gasoline into your gas tank? It might run, but it wouldn’t run nearly as well as it could. The same goes for you body. You can feed it junk food and soda, but just like your car it won’t run as well. If you abuse your body with junk foods or drugs and alcohol, your body and mind will react in a negative way. In fact, just like your car, your body will become stressed and anxious from the poor fuel you put into it and eventually stop running altogether.

Eating a well-balanced diet and exercise regularly is an excellent method for anxiety and stress relief. The stronger your body is, the stronger the mind is also. Taking good care of your body is one of the easiest ways to relieve stress and anxiety and managing your worries.

6. Ask for help. Although it would be great to be able to solve all of our own problems it’s just not realistic. Find someone who has been in the same situation. Ask them how they handled their situation. Reaching out to friends and family or seeking professional help can do wonders to help you to relieve your stress and anxiety.

Sometimes when you’re in the midst of a difficult time you can think that you are the only one that has ever gone through this situation. Once you’ve talked to someone who has gone through and overcome what you’re experiencing, it restores the hope that you too can do the same.

One last thing, stress and anxiety are a part of everyday life. If you begin using some of these ways to relieve your stress and anxiety it will make a huge difference in your life. Stop letting stress and anxiety control you. By using these tips you can take hold of the steering wheel of your life and guide it in the direction of anxiety and stress relief.

If my daughter comes home late I may raise my voice or talk without even trying to listen. If someone I care about psychically injures me, I may avoid her or carefully word any interaction I have with her to steer clear of confronting the situation and working it out. I do both of these things because, at times, my reaction causes a definite and immediate stress response. This reaction has a definite impact on my communications.

Let me ask you, are you having problems with your relationships at home and at work? Do even the smallest annoyances cause you to respond with angry “knee jerk” reactions like yelling or swearing? The facts are that the stress caused by your response to these events can immobilize you emotionally. This stress response can wear down the communications in all of your relationships.

Chronic stress affects you both physically and emotionally. It also wears you down psychologically. Stress can cause your mind to race and your sleep to suffer. As it wears you down your nerves get set on edge. Things that you used to laugh about can infuriate you. You suddenly find yourself exploding at co-workers and loved ones and remaining angry long after the incident is over. This can lead to a vicious spiral of avoidance followed by louder and even more violent outbursts. Left unchecked, this type of chronic emotional stress can ruin you both personally and professionally.

Why does stress interfere with your ability to communicate? It’s because your body’s nervous system was made to keep you alive. When your ancestors were worried about fighting saber toothed tigers or other human beings just to stay alive your stress response was a good thing. The stress response, also known as the fight or flight response was designed to increase your heart beat, your blood pressure and your metabolism. Your stress response increases your blood flow to your major muscle groups, such as your arms and legs, while cutting down the blood supply to your stomach and other organs that are unnecessary for combat. This is good when you need to run or fight. But it also narrows your mind’s focus which shuts down your ability to communicate. This isn’t good for your relationships.

What your body does during stressful situations is provide you with the strength and extra energy that will either help you run faster or fight with more strength and focus. The problem is that very few, if any, situations at home or at work have a need for you to run away from them or fight with them. But when you are stressed your fight or flight response can get out of whack and cause you to react the same way you would if you were attacked by a saber toothed tiger.

Once you begin to react this way you mind can start to develop a habit of behaving in this manner over and over again and, unless you do something to counteract it, your stress can become a trigger that can shut your communications down completely.

So, as you can probably already tell, if you want to maintain good relationships, it’s very important to develop some ways for dealing with stress. Some of these can be as simple having a simple exercise program such as walking or other exercises that involve the use of the mind and body such as Tai Chi and Yoga. Some people seek counseling, biofeedback or visualization using hypnosis and NLP. All of these are excellent methods of dealing with stress and can help you calm down and communicate better.

If you are experiencing chronic stress and you find that it’s affecting your quality of life start developing strategies for dealing with the effects of stress today. Your body doesn’t need to be constantly in the fight or flight mode, in fact not only can this hurt your communications it can kill you! Learning to calm your stress response will be one of the best investments you have ever made and might save your relationships and your life!

You’re working on something one minute and then all of a sudden you are thinking about something all together different and don’t even know how you got to thinking about whatever it is? Sure it happens to us all, one moment we’re doing a great job of getting things done and the next moment we’re unfocused and unable to concentrate on even the simplest tasks.

If you let it, your mind will wonder where it wants and end up – who knows where. Now this is great if you don’t have anything to do, but if you’re like most of the people, being able to stay focused when you’re trying to get certain things done would help you do your work better and faster. Keeping this type of focus is known as mindful living.

If you are rushed and stressed out mindful living is an excellent way to relieve the stress and anxiety in your life. Learning how to stay focused and in the present could actually save you time and money and, in certain circumstances, such as when driving, mindful living could actually save your life! (more…)
