Iran's upcoming presidential election; a chance to make a new discourse?

Iran Election Protest 2009

"The green movement" supporters, me included, believed and believe that Iran's presidential election of 2009 was rigged . Now, the next Iran election is coming. It is scheduled to be held on 14 June 2013. What do we plan to do?

Will we boycott the election or will we try to make another protest after another election fraud?

We will surely make different decisions! It's the only answer one can give at the moment. I don't even know what I am going to do. If I can give you any advice: don't take those who say "I don't vote at any case" seriously! Many changed their decision short before the election time in the years 2009, 2005 and 2001. And this could be the case this year too.

Let's start with "what is the different between 2009 and now?".

1. At 2009 both the Guardian Council and the executive wanted Ahmadinejad to come out as the winner. At the moment Supreme Leader's Guardian Council (the observer) and Ahmadinejad don't work with each other, since Ahmadinejad is in a fight with Khamenei. Knowing the tricks of 2009, it is not as easy to manipulate the upcoming election.

2. Young people of Iran have more experience. It means also mistrusting many reformers.

3. New groups have grown together. They may be able to rise up without reformers.

4. Guardian Council will be more strict.

Next question: Why don't I know what I am going to do on June 2013?

The answer is that you cannot know what is going to happen tomorrow. May be you wake up one night and read that there was a coup in Iran. Or may be a small accident causes a big revolution. The political system of Iran is a little bit chaotic: Ahmadinejad's old friends are now his enemies. Ministers of today could be prisoners of tomorrow, as some ministers of yesterday are jailed now. And it seems that the people of Iran love to surprise themselves. And westerners! Remember the green revolution. No one had counted with that.

Is the upcoming election only about election and political power? Or can it be used to make a new discourse in the long term?

To answer this question it is enough to talk about Hooshang Amirahmadi! We will see what is possible to be done in Iran.

Hooshang Amir Ahmadi is an Iranian American politician. He is ready to answer your questions on reddit. But let's talk about it later.

Not only at reddit, but every where else people are asking him how he is wanting to go through the filter of the Islamic Republic, the Guardian Council. And some people are talking about his role behind the curtain: How could that guy come to Iran and go out of Iran without any problem? Amirahmadi is a guy who talks to BBC Persian, Voice of America Persian and other in Iran forbidden Persian language media openly. At the same time, also the conservative media interviews him.

Iran arrests very often journalists and Politicians for "having foreign contacts" (read for example this one). What makes Amirahmadi different? His connection to the US? Is he a kind of ambassador of United States? Yes, he kind of is. But is he working for American government? We don't know. So let's not talk about it. I have heard lots of rumors about famous student activists who were jailed and tortured for many years. So I cannot trust everything I hear about Amirahmadi. What I don't like about him, is his openly saying that the problem of Iran was not the Guardianship of the Jurist or Providence of the Jurist (Wilayat al Faqih). But he is a Politician and probably he is saying that out of pragmatism. Let's say there is no ideal Politician in the world. I don't want to defend Amirahamdi. My point is much more important than a person. It's not about Amirahmadi at all. He is only the perfect example!

And now back to reddit.

One guy has asked him:

"Wikipedia says you have been disqualified by the Guardian Council. Is that true, and if so, would you call your campaign a protest? Is there any polling in Iran? Any way of estimating support? Would it be dangerous to vote for you? Are absentee ballots allowed? Are you allowed any kind of platform in Iran? Can you give speeches, distribute literature? Or are you inhibited in your campaign? What is your long term goal, and how do you estimate your chances of achieving it?"

I don't want to answer or ask this question, since I think it is wrong to play the role of the Guardian Council. But here is Amirahmadi's answer for the book:

"At this point, no candidate (not me, not Messrs. Ghalibaf, Velayati, etc.) is allowed to publicly campaign in Iran. In that sense, all candidates are in the same boat. No candidate can publicly campaign until he gets the approval of the Guardian Council, which will be delivered in late-May. So far, my campaign has been very active campaigning in the United States, Dubai, and the United Kingdom. We will be travelling to Iran in March, but not for public campaigns. With your help, we want to take our message of peace around the world. The fact is that there are two necessary factors for successful campaigns: ideas and money. We are hoping to build a grassroots movement with broad based support. By donating, you are not only helping fund our campaign organization (incorporated under Amirahmadi 1392, Inc.), you are investing in Iran's future. None of this money goes to me personally; it all goes into our small political organization."

And here is another answer of him which I dislike very much since it is not true:

"It is not dangerous to vote for me. In fact, no Iranian citizen has been penalized for simply voting for or supporting a legal candidate."

Knowing all this and knowing that I am not a big fan of Amirahmadi, I can talk about my main point.

Chance to talk about the Issue instead of Persons?

Let me keep quoting some of Amirahamdi's answers:

"As for action, I will give them their citizen rights. I do not look at them as Bahai's, Jew, Muslim, or anything. I look at them as citizens, and as such, you will be equal in front of the law. As President I will make sure you get your rights. Nobody under my administration will be prosecuted for their race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, religion, political orientation, ideological standing, or any other characteristics."

"Under my administration, homosexuals will have the exact same rights and obligations that any other Iranian citizen will have"

One Redditor asks: "- Fuck, this guy's not gonna get elected, is he? :("

Another Redditor answes:

Probably not. But just by running (or, I suppose, asking to run) he's bringing forth the issue. More than that, he's forcing someone (either the council or competing candidates) to respond to the issues.

For me, any candidate who is able to talk about such issues, is worth campaigning. The results will be seen one day. More important than short time political games are the contents getting discussed.

Muslims that we Like

1. There are Muslims, who watch parts of a film to see how their prophet is insulted. Later, they punish people who had nothing to do with the movie. The radical Muslims are probably the only reason that more than 2.5 million people have clicked on the video till now. The 13-minute portion of the movie "Innocence of Muslims" was so scandalously reported that it made me curious enough to watch. However, I couldn’t even finish the short clip. Why? It was low budget, poor quality and boring. The radical Muslims are probably the only reason that more than 2.5 million people have clicked on the video at this time.

2. There are also Muslims who are actively on the street to fight against the fanatical, violent Muslims. They want to present their Islam. In the photo above we see a woman with a scarf, one without. They want to tell the world that their Islam is a peaceful Islam -- an Islam that doesn't represent "killing". And they want to stop "killing" in the name of their religion. We like such Muslims.

Abstract

This study attempts to demonstrate how a government launched an economic structural reform plan that

previous governments, fearing a serious social backlash, had been unable to implement over the course

of 30 years. The findings show that the Iranian government used “illusion therapy”, a package of econopsychological

techniques, to implement IMF-backed “shock” economic reforms to long-standing energy and food subsidies, without facing the expected social reaction.

To study the situation at the “crowd level” and to analyse the behaviour of the people during the shock, the researcher, as an advisor to one of the most watched economic programs on national television at the time of shock, With You (“Ba-Shoma”), designed a sequential series of polls and the show asked the people to participate in it daily via text message. The survey was conducted three months after the shock, when no social backlash was seen in the short run. Approximately fifty to eighty thousand people participated each day. The geographical distribution of the participants was countrywide, approximately two thousand people for each province (Iran has 31 provinces).
The results of the TV survey showed that that most participants felt that their economic situation had either worsened or had not improved three months into the plan. To measure individuals’ sentiments, two questions of different types were posed to clarify the results should the responses prove contradictory. The first question asked viewers “What percentage of your increased expenses have been compensated for by the subsidies you have received?” Only 4% believed that the amount they received exceeded the increase in costs.
Two days later, the same question was posed another way to evaluate the compatibility of the answers. Viewers were asked: “In your opinion, how has the subsidy reform plan affected your life?” Only 15% believed that the reform plan has improved their living conditions.
Comparing the results of the two polls, the general feeling of the people is that the Subsidy Reform Plan was not in their interest.
But, how do individuals view the impacts of plan on the other strata of “society”?. . . On another program, they were asked to answer this question via SMS: “In your view, what changes have reform plan created for people in various walks of life?” In this question, it was emphasised that individuals not consider their own situation when answering the question.
Answers changed markedly. Only 37% believed that the plan had worsened living conditions. Comparing the results of this opinion poll with the two previous polls shows that individuals do not have appreciable illusions about themselves but they do have illusions regarding the social general situation.

The study shows that the illusion therapy caused the social energy directed against the reforms
to be released over a longer time horizon instead of explosively in the short run.

At least 180 people have died in northwestern Iran because of an Earthquake. Iranian State TV doesn't report very much about the earthquake. Instead of that, they broadcast Ramadan Prayers and other religious stuff! BBC English seems to be more interested about people's life in Iran.

How to Help Democratization Outside the Streets

1. Hungry Man is Not (Necessarily) a Democracy Fighter

Iran's streets seem to be silence at the moment. Somme people may hope that the sanctions make people loud. I don't. Why? I think it is very simple:

"A hungry man is an angry man", and the angry man follows more his emotions than his sense. If you are angry and you are in a fight, you may do many unwanted, non logical things. Not well enough thought things. It is wrong to think that hungry people on the streets are democracy fighters. Hungry people fight for survival.

Fighting for survival can get very emotional. Fanatic right and leftist groups, both nationalists and communists will use the bad economic situation to get supporters. You don't need to look that far: the election results in Greece and France are talking to us.

2. What Shall We Do, or: "More Important Than Street Protests"

Iran is a country in modernization process, somehow like France after it's industrial revolution: different classes are starting to mix in each other, religion and tradition are losing their colors. Well educated religious people question and challenge religious fundamentalists. In the same time, Islam criticizers can find dialogues with religious people, of course not in public. After the "Green Revolution" it seems that people have learned to trust each other a little bit: The seculars dare now to talk about the history of Islam with their religious co-workers. The religious people, who are well educated are happy about such conversations since they can show their friends that also religious people can talk in an academic level.

Necessary for reaching democracy is a democratic society, where different groups of discourses can tolerate and talk to each other. And it needs training ... "democracy is a process" is not an invented bullshit; it's the bitter truth I had to accept after reading the history.

And now we can answer the question: "How can we help the democratization of Iran"?

1. Try to help people to talk to each other. Find similar groups of interest and introduce them to each other. Make them strong. Now you are a NGO.
2. Don't try to tell them what is good for them, if you haven't see their lives and you haven't live with them. It is their duty to find out their way in their society.
3. Talk to Iranians about your weekday. If possible, go to Iran. Tell them about your lifestyle and culture. You will probably join your trip, too.

Now you have helped small groups to grow up and get larger. You have strengthened social networks. People will talk for themselves, politicians need to follow theses groups to get supported. And this is how democracy works.

[Comment by Shahin] I bought 5 breads and was cooling it on a table in front of the baker. Two well dressed young men, probably students, coming from behind asked me the price of a bread. I answered: "250 Toman". The guys went back two steps. I could see one of them sweating. They tried to talk lightly, but I still could understand what they are talking about.

One of them asked: "Did you get your Yaraneh this month?". Yaraneh is a cash payment by the government on the poorer people.
"No, not yet", answers the other one.
"I have no money left, not even 100 Toman"

I am ashamed. I have bought 5 breads and I am alone and those two guys have not even the money for two breads. I am feeling the sweat coming down from my forehead. Not knowing what to do, I offer them two breads. The guys take them and go away without saying any word. It was an embarrassing situation for all of us.

Unpopular Sanctions' Effect in a Pro-American Country

Is it the sanctions which is breaking the backs of the poor people or is it the mismanagements of Iran's government? And wasn't it the Iranian foreign policy, which has made the west to sanction Iran? Yes, it was, undoubtedly.

"But why the hell is the west sanctioning the medicine and how shall such sanctions weaken the Iranian regime?", you probably have heard this or similar questions. And such question leads many people to ask: "Is the US really on our side?!". You may think that the West is hoping that the bad economy would lead people to the streets.

I was talking to a manger of a fabric, who was trying to tell me what the sanctions have affected to it's workers. He told me that some basic materials of his fabric were made by the US and that those products haven't been delivered since the last embargo. If they would buy the same materials from an Iranian fabric, they would cost three times more than the old products. Their product couldn't be sold any more because of it's high prise. Many of his workers are unemployment now and they answer the first question with "both of them". I didn't ask him what his fabric is producing, since I didn't want to break his anonymity. It was unexpectedly enough, that he was telling me such tough stories. Just hours ago a friend introduced him to me and I was asking myself: "Is Iran still the most pro-American country"

The manager continued: "imagine if the US would remove all the sanctions. No one could say any more that the miserable economical situation is because of the hostile US policy. It would be obvious that they [if one is talking about they, he is talking about the government] are ruining workers' lives. And they couldn't beaten down the demonstrations so easily by labeling it as pro-American demonstration. It would at least make the gaps inside them [the government] much bigger than it is at the moment".

And as I told him that it is impossible for the US at the moment to remove all the sanctions, he agreed with me and said: "Yes, but guess what would happen, if they cut some important sanctions and the regime wouldn't change it's current foreign policy. And guess what would happen if the US would remove some sanctions and Iran would change it's policy [He wanted to tell me that in both cases it would be the end of the regime]. You will see in the future, how a part of the regime will try to break the upcoming nuclear talks".

Politics is not as easy as that manager tried to explain to me, I think. But his words were part of the reality. And more importantly: many people think like him in Iran. Some may be neither managers nor workers, but could be unhappy with not being able to download android apps with their smartphones.

I don't want to end this note too black and white: I think, most of the Iranians still like the US and dream of living there. With some good reasons, they are just a little bit more suspicious about it's policies.

In this "anti war" gathering in front of US Embassy gathering, some Iranians and supporters of the Green Movement were chanting "no to war" and "no to dictatorship in the middle east" before they were attacked by supporters of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Hezbollah of Lebanon and the Syrian Regime. The attackers were holding the flags of Syria and Hezbollah. The police separated both groups.

A group which is having problems with the Free Iran flag, doesn't care so much about people's lives or dignity. It is just participating in the gathering to misuse the anti war movement.

Why I decided to write this note

Spreading propaganda respectively wrong news is not only used by the Islamic Republic, but also by some of it's radical opponents. Not only for ethical reasons shall we fight these kind of lies. Some of these reasons are not clear for every one:

1. 2009 Ashura Protest - Madyar (a journalist and human rights activist) reported (I cannot open his blog at the moment, about a false report which led to the arrest of many people. The Tweets "Hurry up! Lots of people are needing your help in front of Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcaster" and "Lots of people are on the way to IRIB" was getting retweeted fast. About 150 people believed it and went to there. They got beaten or arrested. In the best case the tweet was sent with good will, but ended in disaster.

2. Those radical regime opponents are playing with our credibility with their lies. Their lies will come out. How could our readers distinguish between them and us?

I just googled the title of INA and found many untrustworthy pages, which have copy pasted the nonsense. Some even translated it into English.

For Vahid Online, me and people like us, the style and the source are the reasons not to believe such reports, but the news could be a real story nowadays! Vahid writes (my translation):

"You rarely see such [wrong] news in Google Plus, but some networks get lot of likes, because such emotional news are written for an audience whose first priority for clicking the like button is to be against the Islamic Republic.

Such sources find a picture and write a story about it. In the best case some one emails them the wrong news. The only important thing is that the report is against the Islamic Republic [and not if the story is true or not]"

I don't know that guy, but I have seen such accusation very often in Internet, specially by members of militant groups in Twitter. Any contradiction means you are a regime agent.I wonder if they really believe it. Probably some of them do, at least some of them, I guess. I personally don't care, but be aware of them.
