A Sweet Soiree

Meet Associate Planner, LeeAnn!

2013-04-22T08:37:00.001-04:00

We are beyond thrilled to welcome LeeAnn to the A Sweet Soiree team! LeeAnn comes to us by referral from our own dear Lead Planner, Ellen. The two worked their magic previously together doing their saintly fundraising efforts at the Special Olympics. Have you ever been to the Dulles Plane Pull? Now THAT is quite the event to pull off (hah, pun)! Please join us in welcoming LeeAnn and let's get to know her a bit better......

Q: Alma mater and program of study:

A: I went to George Mason University for my Bachelors in Events Management

Q: What do you love about weddings?

A: My favorite part is watching the bride walk down the aisle. The amount of love witnessed in that moment between the father and daughter and the groom is amazing. It makes me a little sappy.

Q: What is your ideal day to yourself (money no object)?

A: I would start my day with and Iced White Mocha from Starbucks and then I would go to brunch with my friends, bottomless mimosas are always fun. Shopping is always a must, and then a trip to see the latest movie.

Q: Favorite Band/Singer and why?

A: This is so hard, I love Maroon 5, Bruno Mars, Andy Grammer, and Gavin DeGraw. For this I will say Maroon 5, hello Adam Levine, and they have a song for just about any mood I’m feeling.

Q: Fun quirky thing about you:

A:I was Tiny Miss Mercer County ’97 in NJ

Q: If you could meet anyone who would it be and why?

A: Ellen Degeneres. I think she’s one of the funniest humans ever. She also is so positive and motivational.

Q: If you got married this year, what theme/concept would you have?

A: I would most likely choose a nautical theme because I love the beach. I would love to choose a venue with huge windows and a beautiful view of the ocean and sunset. I love that this theme can be simple and modest; I’m not really into the flashy and showy decorations. Plus I’m really into blues right now.

Q: What’s your favorite store and why?

A: Target. This place is a black hole for me, I can’t ever just walk in for one thing. It has everything from cute clothes and shoes to groceries so what’s not to love about it!

Q: Any pets?

A: My parents have a cat who I compete for attention with when I visit home.

Q: Heels or flip flops?

A: Flip flops, I’m always on the run so I find that cute sandals are the way to go.

Q: What’s your favorite OPI nail color?

A: I love painting my nails and change the color about once a week, currently my favorite is panda-monium pink. I love choosing the nail polish with the most fun name.

Real Wedding Video: Andrea and Ted

2013-04-18T14:50:00.000-04:00

Whew, we had a quick turnaround on both the video and photographs for Andrea and Ted's late March wedding. They are traveling to Taiwan to celebrate with friends and family there, and of course, wanted to take the show pieces along with them.

I personally loved seeing parts from their ceremony as we missed some of it while we attended to final reception details. AND even though I've seen it a dozen times, I just cannot get over how wonderfully amazing her gown turned out to be. Andrea bought it as a sample gown in a size 8 and the stellar seamstresses at Saks Jandel were able to take it to a size 0 for her without an issue.

BIG kudos and thanks to Indepth Photo and Video for their work on this event. The story is very well pieced together and really captures the entire day through the snippets.

Real Wedding Video: Jessica and Matt

2013-02-21T12:00:00.000-05:00

We knew we'd love Jess and Matt's wedding from the very first minute she said "hello". They are a delight to be around as they just radiate vibes of love out into the universe; it's contagious people. Some of our most favorite moments include Jessica walking down the aisle, preceded by striking beams of sunlight, their "High Five" circle as they were introduced, AND who wouldn't love being serenaded by about 15 of the Groom's college fraternity brothers while literally on a pedestal? Thanks a billion to the always wonderful Matt from Buerhaus Design for sharing the video with us!

Welcome Back Associate Planner Kelley!

2013-02-19T10:00:00.000-05:00

We were oh so sad when Associate Planner Kelley informed us about 18 months ago that she'd be leaving us, and DC, for the greener pastures of Nashville Tennessee. Well, it only took her about a year to realize where she truly belonged and she's returned to us, and DC, and we are beyond thrilled to welcome her back with open arms! Let's catch up with Kelley and learn a little more about her journey.

Question: Tell us what adventures you had in Nashville both personally and professionally?

Answer: Nashville was an incredible experience where I had to opportunity to grow and learn more about myself and the things and people that are important to me. I got to be a part of a very cool culture surrounded by music which was a lot of fun and very neat to be involved with. It is amazing the talent that exists in one small city! I had never lived away from the DC area and moving to Nashville was a great opportunity to experience a new city and push myself out of my comfort zone. I worked A LOT while I was in Nashville, but continued in events and hospitality and was able to experience some other sectors of the event industry that I had not yet touched.

Question: What couldn't keep you away from the DC area for long?

Answer: I missed my friends and family more than I ever could have imagined. While getting away and experiencing a new city was great, I really learned to appreciate the DC area and everything that this city has to offer. It is amazing the number of opportunities available in this area and the city itself is just beautiful!

Question: Tell us what you've been up to since your return to the Best coast?

Answer: Since I returned I have been working in catering and event coordination. I have had the opportunity to design some incredible events and to work with clients that are so dear to my heart. I have enjoyed being able to learn and grow more and more in the career industry that I am so passionate about.

Question: What did you miss the most about DC?

Answer: I missed my friends and family and the many great people that I worked for while I was in the area. I was so excited to come back!

Question: What do you miss the most now about Nashville?

Answer: I miss the friends and relationships that developed while I was there. I met people who pushed me and reminded me of who I want to be and what my goals are.

Question: Anything else you want to share?

Answer: I am excited to be back on the A Sweet Soiree Team and for the opportunity to make more memorable events!

What's my most favorite part you ask? Well, that the video opens with a Dave Matthews Band song of course! We hope that you enjoy it as much as we did!

Our Faves from Bridal Market

2012-11-08T16:12:00.002-05:00

Every October a wonderful spectacle of bridal fashion is unleashed upon the runways of New York. We dream, DREAM of attending this event every year but alas, due to October being the busiest time of the year for our business, there are more important things to attend to of course. So, we diligently and delightfully follow along with baited breath to see the fashions hit the web for all to see. Below is a run down of some of our favorites with a bit of a twist; what DC venue that they would be so well suited towards.

Dress by Reem Acra

We are partial to Reem Acra. Our owner wore a Reem Acra for her own wedding, so we always tend to fall her stuff. In our opinion, this dress is architectural, airy, fun, yet elegant. Basically perfected suited for a venue like the Hotel Monaco in Penn Quarter, DC.

Dress by Romona Keveza

What struck us with this gown was the neckline. First off, we noticed the lovely lace detail, which always add a touch of vintage class. But then, looking beyond the lace, we were blown away by the cut of the neckline; the dip around the bust but then rising to a pointed corner is so modern and even a bit sexy. We think that this dress would fit in so very well with a venue like The Corcoran Gallery. It's got the perfect blend of sexiness with the touch of historic class.

Dress by Kenneth Pool

Kenneth Pool never disappoints in the opulent ballgown department, and this piece is no different! We immediately swooned over the back of this gown. Back cutouts definitely seemed to be a trend this season, but where this one shines is that it's paired with a ballgown and is a bit more unexpected due to the style of the skirt. This gown would go well with a venue that is surprisingly grand such as the National Museum of Women in the Arts.

Dress by Amsale

We really appreciate the simplicity of this gown. Although modern with the one shoulder look, we can also visualize this gown being still appropriate 50 years from now....like an instant classic. The great thing about this gown is it's versatility. It would go well on a beach, it would go well with a hotel ballroom. We think it's best suited for a lovely outdoor park setting like The Hendry House in Arlington.

Dress by Watters

We aren't going to lie, we were surprised to see who had designed this gown as it's quite different than what we have seen from Watters in the past. We are SUCKERS for a dress with some color to it, and of course a client will say to us, "Yeah, but where would I wear this"?? Glad you asked! We'd love to see this dress come sweeping down the stairs of the Carnegie Institute of Washington or the perfectly manicured lawns of Oxon Hill Manor.

Inspiration Board #6: Happy Birthday Sprinkles

2012-11-01T08:37:00.001-04:00

Today our owner and Chief event Officer, Courtney, celebrates her birthday! We can't get sprinkles out of our heads. What's not to love? The whimsy? The nostalgia? The colorful mini sugar pieces from heaven? We hope you enjoy it too!

Meet Associate Planner, Carly!

2012-04-23T11:09:00.000-04:00

Good Monday Morning! Today we are thrilled to introduce you all to Carly, our newest team member addition to A Sweet Soiree Events. Marisa will be taking a bit of a hiatus as she plans her own wedding, but are so excited to add Carly to the group!! Without further ado, please get to know Carly!

Alma mater and program of study: College of Charleston in the wonderful most
amazing city in the world, Charleston South Carolina. I studied communications and
minored in Women’s & Gender Studies.

What do you love about weddings? The last dance of the night. Everyone is just so in
the moment and feeling the love. There is usually always one unsuspecting character
who has had a few too many and is dancing like a maniac; but everyone else is too
distracted having fun to notice (I love watching that person)

What is your ideal day to yourself (money no object)? I would definitely start the day
with a run and yoga with my sister. Then it would include shopping, pampering, red
velvet cupcakes and a glass of chardonnay on a patio (in no particular order)

Favorite Band/Singer and why? Way too many to pick just one! I usually like whatever
the current pop song of the moment is

Fun quirky thing about you: I absolutely love when the milage in a car hits a milestone
number (doesn’t have to be just something like 100,000 even something like 26,666
would get me really excited) haha I bet that sounds just crazy!

If you could meet anyone who would it be and why? Have to say the Queen Martha
Stewart as well! I am honestly one of her biggest fans and think of her as a mentor
even though I don’t know her (is that weird?) I look up to her for inspiration and
answers on just about anything

If you got married this year, what theme/concept would you have? Hmmm... Tough
because this changes all the time, in general it would be a traditional wedding with a
lot of modern touches... The flowers always change but for the most part I go back and
forth between calla lilies and peonies

What’s your favorite store and why? William Sonoma, I love cooking and I think the
kitchen really makes the home. One day I will own everything in that store!

Any pets? Dog named Max

Heels or flip flops? Heels all the way! Definitely need a flip flop now and then when you
are going casual and for the comfort, but I just love the sophistication that a pair of
heels bring to an outfit

What’s your favorite OPI nail color? Changes every season and sometimes everytime
they release a new line. Right now I’d have to say its a tie between mod squad and its
a girl (both classic for early spring)

What else would you like to know about Carly? Feel free to submit and comment and she'd be glad to answer.

Cheers,
Courtney

Meet Associate Planner, Ellen!

2012-03-09T10:49:00.000-05:00

We first met Ellen more than a year ago when she helped us out with a client event where we needed a lot of hands on deck. She was so very detailed, accommodating, and brought such a "can do" attitude that I was anxious to bring her aboard! However, she was also planning her own wedding so after having that behind her, she is ready to bring her experience and smile to A Sweet Soiree! Please join us in welcoming Ellen.

Alma mater and program of study: I received my BA in American Studies and also in Classics at the University of Notre Dame and my MS in Sport Management at UMass – Amherst.

What do you love about weddings? What don’t I love about weddings? I love knowing that everyone in the room has come together from all over because of their love of the couple. I love seeing people have such a good time, dancing, eating, talking, and laughing. I love seeing the groom’s face when he first catches a glimpse of his bride.

What is your ideal day to yourself (money no object)? I’d start the day off by sleeping in until 9ish (I usually get up at 5am!). I’d go get a latte then head to a spa, preferable Bliss, for a mani/pedi, facial and massage. After I was nice and relaxed I’d do some hardcore shopping! When I had done some major damage I would get all dressed up and have a great dinner with some drinks in a city with my husband and friends.

Favorite Band/Singer and why? That’s easy for this Jersey Girl! Bruce Springsteen all the way! My only boss is Bruce!

Fun quirky thing about you: I’m a closet (not really!) nerd. I have tried out and passed the test for Jeopardy two times but I just couldn’t get the hang of that darn buzzer!

If you could meet anyone who would it be and why? Queen Elizabeth I and II and Queen Victoria. I love powerful women and I’m sure these three would have some amazing tales. They were some of England’s most successful rulers and they all came to the throne when it was considered a man’s job.

If you got married this year, what theme/concept would you have? Well I actually did just get married this past year. It was fantastic. Very classic and classy for a Jersey affair. (We threw a Springsteen cover band in so the guests wouldn’t forget they were in the Garden State!) If I could plan another one I think I would do something very Gatsby!

What’s your favorite store and why? What isn’t my favorite store? I don’t discriminate when it comes to shopping. I love clothes shopping, home shopping, food shopping, etc. If I had to pick I would probably choose Marshalls. I LOVE a good bargain and I love searching for it. My husband says I’m obsessed with the art of the deal. I also have a lot of great memories of shopping trips here with my mom who is the deal master!

Any pets? My parents have a bird, named Bird, that they say is my brother. We talk on the phone. He is a pretty boy, or so he tells me.

Heels or flip flops? I’m actually a ballet slipper kind of girl. I embrace my shortness. When I do heels I’m all about LK Bennett. They are beyond comfortable and pretty enough for royalty….The Duchess of Cambridge is fond of them too!

What’s your favorite OPI nail color? I’m boring. I’ve been a French manicure girl for about 15 years so something on the order of “Princesses Rule”. Before that though, I was a bit more daring and would have gone for a “Glitzerland” with some crazy design on it.

Inspiration Board #4: Rustic Winter

2012-03-05T13:12:00.002-05:00

We have one more fabulous wintry inspiration board to put "Winter" (and I use that term lightly) 2011/2012 behind us! This one comes from Associate planner, Marisa and is inspired by a rustic, woodsy notion. I think it *almost* makes me want winter to last just a bit longer!

Inspiration Board #1: Peppermint

2011-12-21T14:54:00.000-05:00

With the holidays right around the corner, it's difficult NOT to be inspired by all the wonderful decor and photos abound. As everyone well knows, I am a sucker for all things sweet, so it's no surprise that when thinking of inspiring holiday topics I turned to candy. The below board is brought to us compliments of Peppermint in all forms: canes, wheels, spheres...

Enjoy the eye candy (hehe) and have a super wonderful holiday season!

Cheers,
Courtney

Palette Play #1

2011-12-06T15:50:00.001-05:00

We have a new feature to the blog, which is a bit of a miniature (who doesn't love miniatures?) version of the Inspiration board. Welcome to Palette Play where we use one singular photograph to inspire a palette of color for your event.

Today's version is brought to us by this gorgeous dress from Monique Lhuillier (again, who doesn't love Monique Lhuillier?). So many colors in the dress, so little space to put them all!

Lastly, we've made it SUPER easy for you to replicate the colors by providing the corresponding Pantone color code to take to your florist/dress maker/linen provider etc etc.

Cheers,
Courtney
