In my article I suggested that the modern subject associations' purposes include
� � � �providing a professional home which transcends teachers� immediate work context and enables them to explore with others the nature of the subjects they teach and how best to enable learning
� � � �facilitating local, regional and national events that enable shared learning
� � � �informing members and the wider community of developments in the subject
� � � �collating the views of practitioners and experts to influence policymakers

To what extent do you agree?

Are there other purposes?

Is this enough to ensure a vibrant and sustainable community?

This thread is for discussing The Long and the Short.

A large collection of puzzles and problems designed to enrich mathematics in the classroom.

The problems are divided into shorter and longer activities which are suitable for individual, small group or whole class use and for teachers who want to promote rich tasks, key processes, developing mathematical thinking and problem solving.

How do we stop the results-driven madness of early entry? Some schools are entering students four times for the linear exams through years 10 and 11 - drilling them on the first half of the higher paper - until they get a C. The new assessment objectives show no sign of stopping this. if anything the situation's becoming worse. No wonder vacancies for heads of maths seem to be running at record levels!

In a word no.
I too sucked horribly at maths. 90% of the stuff they talk about in maths at school anyway is completely irrelevant to life in general. I turn 29 this year and I have never yet had to work out the area of a lawn or what speed a train was travelling if it left a station at 6am with a driver named Steve.

Most of the time, I still have to add numbers up using my fingers. I've never found it to be something that holds me back though. I've never had a problem getting a job and have never had huge problems with it. I just have to use a calculator sometimes is all!

I am a Mathematician in Greece. I teach in a high school (ages 16-18)

I want to buy all the math school books that students in England use in their classes (ages 16-18).
I want to compare them with the Greek books, and see their style, similarities, differences etc.

Where can I find and buy them?

If someone has a copy of them I would like to buy them all.

ps. In Greece all the school books are available free on the internet from the Greek Educational Institute!! but I think this is not happening in England, since I think books are not free..

Secondary - Teaching Level 1-3 in KS3

I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice...
I am rewriting our KS3 SoW, now focusing on setting it up in such a way that non-specialist teachers of mathematics could (and to be fair - some of our 'specialists'), with my support, help our really low achievers to get to grips with numbers. I have used the nrich curriculum planning tool for primary as my starting point but was wondering what your thoughts were. The problem is of course that I do not want to use resources aimed at KS1 for my Y7 students... I am looking in to buying the cuisenaire rods with the accompanying activity book. My HoD said I can buy 'a book'... Any recommendations greatly appreciated.

Hi all,
I have found out now that the 'slider' part of the Math Graphing app doesn't work yet so I'll await the next version. Also, the lovely GeoGebra people are working on mobile versions, especially iPhone and Android apps, of their software so I look forward to using this.� I find GeoGebra very intuitive and so do my students.

The Teachers' Notes accompanying each problem offer guidance to teachers on possible ways of engaging learners in the activity or challenge.
Learners can submit their solutions to the problems using the 'Submit a Solution' tab at the top of each problem. Solutions to the November problems will appear in January.

In the 60's the Nuffield Foundation ran a significant primary project, the Nuffield Mathematics Project, "I do, and I understand". A key element of the Project was the use of concrete manipulatives/equipment. Unfortunately, we are no longer running/supporting the project nor do we have an archive of the manipulatives. You are welcome to visit the Foundation (we are based in London) to consult the print materials produced for the Project.

The National Film Archive may have a copy of a short (14 minute) film on the Project ftvdb.bfi.org.uk/sift/title/17294 and an internet search should bring up references such as jstor.org/pss/1000530 .

I am trying to find the names of the MaST providers can anyone help me, please?
The NCETM microsite has been closed pending government review.
Although I have tried Googling sometimes that gives me LAs trying to recruit teachers and sometimes HEI but not always with contact details.
If YOU (or someone you know) do provide MaST courses please could you contact Karen Moran at the ATM office or me via this website.

Can anyone help?
I am wondering what currently available data-handling software best to use in both KS1 and KS2 classrooms? Any ideas on what you are using �and what is good and notsogood, would be gratefully received. Someone has suggested the Black Cat suite. Your thoughts?

also- is there any particularly successful software for P aged children to explore patterning and symmetry, please?
