BACK IN THE GAME

I am back on the hardwood, and I have to say it feels pretty darn good. After recovering from an injury, attending an exposure camp, sparking interest....but still no offer of value, I was ready to hang it up and move on. An opportunity arose for me to audition for a local ABA organization here in North Dallas. This was a level I said I would never stoop to...but did anyways. Made it through training camp, and currently getting back into the swing of things. Although the situation is not ideal, and a direct step backwards from what I am accustom to, I am in a place where the game is actually fun again! We shall see what the Lord has in store for me in this arena and moving forward as ball player.

So much to do, so little time! That's my excuse for lack of blogging, and I am sticking to it. As I scrolled down the page, I've notice I have gone off the path and purpose for this space. A Taste of a Blessed Life, was created to bring light to the things in which the Lord has been doing within and around me. I somewhat got caught up in the whole "cool/popular" way of blogging, which I have to admit is pretty fun. My wife introduce me to Pinterest, where you pin your interests...get it! I also stumbled upon Tumblr, which makes it conveniently easy to simultaneous blog, update your status, and tweet in one click. So I am making it a priority again to use this space for what it was design to be used for....while giving birth to a little tumblr for fun. I hope you enjoy and support all my creative efforts.

Country Time

A few weeks ago, the fam and I attended the 2nd annual Spencer Family Reunion in Karnak,Tx. We were unable to make it to the 1st annual for some unknown reason, so we were very excited to see what was in store. As we spud down the country roads, the question came to mind..."Could I live out here in the country"? Where the homes are wide spread, grocery stores are miles away, and where street lights just don't exist. Driving pass the church where my great-grandparents tied the knot, and the private cemetery where their bodies lay, took me back to an era that I never witnessed.

Upon arrival, we spent the first half an hour just meeting family. Most of which we had never met or seen in our lives. When I would introduce myself by name, I noticed the; "oh...ok?" type look on their faces, but when I told them who my grandfather was that look morphed into an; "OH...WOW!" expression. What started out with a hand shake, quickly transformed into a hug. Much was learned about my new found family members, but more was learned about my grandfather, who passed back in '01. He was a man of honor, integrity, with the willingness to serve others. A man who worked hard as a young boy, all while raising his siblings. A man who entered a room and had a presence about him. Seeing the home he grew up in brought chills through my body as I tried to envision the home in its functioning condition. Very Humbling! I've been always proud to wear the Spencer name, and this trip has elevated that feeling.

So after this journey through the woods the question still stands; "Could I live in the country"?.....I will play it safe and say... IF I Had To!

A lot of great music being created as of late. These artists continue to grow in their craft, while remaining transparent through it all. From albums to mixtapes, here are some tunes that will fill your library while filling your spirit with truth.

Speaking of truth...Lets get started with artist Da Truth with his latest album The Whole Truth. Those that are heavy in the Christian Hip-Hop circuit should have caught wind of Truth's mishaps, but for those that are not I will touch on it briefly. Da Truth had an incident where he committed adultery with a married woman. This ordeal was a big shock not only to myself, but to the entire culture and its followers. After going through a state of depression and shame, the Lord lifted and restored Da Truth spiritually and physically. He and his wife have rededicated themselves, allowing him to get back to a place where he could comfortably make music again.
This situation displayed how much pride is a beast, and if you don't remain humble God will humble you! No one is above the ability to fall! The adversary is real, and seizes any opportunity to destroy you and all those who follow. When you are on a platform, the darts seem to be a bit sharper...which means your armour has to be bit thicker. This album is Da Truth at his best! Pouring his heart out with all the pain he endured, and the grace of God which restore him.

Another album I have in heavy rotation is Dying to Live by PRo. PRo is one of those artists who pack a lot of heat in their delivery and punch lines. When he is featured on a track, I can't help but to hold my breathe before he raps. Diggin' the concept and diggin' this album.

Andy Mineo, formerly known as C-Lite, is well known for his feature on Background with Lecrae. He killed it with his vocals on that track, but come to find out he's not a singer. Dude is just super talented! Check out this track and download his mixtape; Formerly Known.

My boy Duke put me on this track, and it has been on replay ever since...Bizzle brings the real the heat on every track he's on.

Tying the Knot

Congrats to my cousin "Day Day" for tying the knot of eternal love w/ his wife Elaine. They kept it pure, and the Lord most definitely honors those whom honor Him with obedience. This couple is actively involved in ministry, and have a deep rooted understanding of the calling on their lives. Much love to Mr. and Mrs. Doperoy.

A week ago, some Xrossover partners and I had an amazing opportunity before us. This opportunity gave us free rain to train the University of Texas-Arlington's Movin' Mavs wheelchair basketball team. Okay, this was no charity case. These athletes were tough and got it in to the fullest! Their skill level was at a high level, and they were focused more than some able body athletes we have trained in the past. This experience was humbling, allowing us to walk through a door we never knew we could.
As I trained and talked to the athletes, you can see the faith they proudly express. Not wanting pity, but wanting to be challenged even the more. Viewing their disability as a blessing rather than a hindrance.

We are looking forward to supporting and working w/ Movin' Mavs in the future.

Kingdom Performance

After months of planning, preparing, and prayer, the moment of truth had finally arrived. August 8th - 12th, 2011 marked the official launch of my basketball training company, Kingdom Performance. I had been doing private and group skills training since the beginning of the year leading up to the date, but this event packed something greater than drills.

About 17 athletes from ages 8 to 18 entered the McKinney, Tx gym. As I gazed in the eyes of these ambitious young men and women, I couldn't help but to pause and give glory unto the only 1 who could bring this vision to pass. Reflecting on all He had saw me though and provided beyond measure. Initially the camp was suppose to take place in my city of San Diego, but it was obvious that the Lord saw fit for me to stay put and utilize what He had put right in front of me. Door after door opened, as I began to see clearly what He had been working on. When I got to the other side of the door, their it was.... It was time to make my POPS proud doing everything w/ a spirit of excellence!

From assessing each athletes starting and ending point, delivering daily lessons and intense training, giving back to the community, to equipping each athlete with the armour.... I have to say that round 1 was success!

Glory be to God, and to His Son who has given us Victory!

Growing up, the base of my life have pretty much consisted of 3 main things; athletics, helping others, and faith....in that order. Playing college and professional basketball was a desire that resided in my heart from birth, and from that a passion for intense training began to brew. I had no idea where these interest would take me, but I did know I would go hard for them.

In 2006, I received the direction to my calling in this life. That calling encompassed those same 3 things, but in reverse order. At the time the pictured was quite blurred and distorted, but if you squint your eyes you could see a little bit. In hindsight, it made perfect sense why the vision looked like that, due to my lack of obedience. My spirit was blurred and confused as I straddled the fence, and the only way I was going to find clarity was if I sought after the one whom provides it. The picture became clearer as I slowly began to distance myself from the worldly pleasures I once loved. By the Grace and Mercy of God, I had been waken up and educated on the significance of the big picture.

That picture, that vision, in bold letters read...KINGDOM. The purpose of life is to effectively prepare us for eternity in the Kingdom of God. Seeking Him and getting others to do the same is name of the game. So, what does that have to do with athletic training? Absolutely nothing! Its not about any particular occupation or venture, its about what you do with the position you are given. Every good and perfect gift is given by God and should be used for His glory alone. I have been given the desires of my heart being involved in the athletic industry as player and coach, and its my duty to steward the position properly. I've learn that life is about preparation, and with pure intentions I plan to weave that into the jerseys of whomever God sends my way.

Preparing athletes for the next level of their careers, while educating them on the importance of making kingdom investments. Showing them how to train with and for a purpose, while building a character of moral excellence. Giving them something of substance, that will never wither nor fade....but stand forever!

GETTIN' IT IN

I am pretty sure by now, that most of the country has caught wave of IN-N-OUT's new home in Texas. The west coast exclusive burger joint, all of a sudden(so it seems) decided to expand to the Lone Star State in a major way. As a born and bread Cali boy, the sight of the building structure months prior to opening, was enough to bring tears to my eyes. I began to hear the "what's the big deal?" spill from all these cowboys and rangers out here, many whom had never experienced this one of kind masterpiece.
An official grand opening was never announced, creating much anticipation and gossip as to when the take over would begin. Out of the 7 location set to launch in the big "T", 2 (Allen & Frisco) put the pedal to the medal towards coming soon. Fortunately, as a current resident of Allen, I didn't have to travel far when they decided to open their doors. Opening day took place on last Wednesday, and to no surprise it was a flying mess. I did a drive by as the storm hit...literally...as hundreds stood there soaked, but still ready to get their hands on one...or 2. I decided to slide in on Friday before lunch, and only waited 30 minutes to get my fix and I was good. It was such a comforting feeling to be in place you grew up on. I make the comparison to my European experience. When you are miles and miles from home, and you come across something that takes you back whether it be a person, place, or thing, it provides you with that home town feel and IN-N-OUT does it for me. Much love to the staff for making it happen, your food blesses my stomach.

Congratulations to my big cousin Brian and new cousin Dana for sealing their lives under God last weekend. A very contemporary backdrop at the Lofty Spaces, with KCI and JoJo soothing from the speakers, Brian and Dana shared many laughs and tears before jumping the broom...literally. Brian had the crowd buzzin' with the infamous Binaca spray before the big kiss. What made this experience crazy to me, was the fact that Brian was the one who caught the garter I alley-ooped to the fellas at my wedding reception almost 2 years ago...that thing is real lol!

May the grace and love of God be the centerpiece of your eternal bond as one. Allow only HIM to prave the path, pick-up your crosses and diligently follow it together. We are so proud and happy for you, and appreciate you allowing us to share this special moment in your lives.
