How to find a good mechanic and get the best deals.

I am sure there has been a few people tell you where they get their cars repaired. It is very hard to find a good mechanic and once you find one it can still be hard to get your repairs done. First the mechanic must love mechanic work or they will not really care about your repair problems. A good mechanic will be happy to talk to you without wanting money first. Most repair places watch their time so close they have to look at a book before giving estimate because they want everything they can get from you.

A lot of mechanics work at home to make extra money and sometimes they do not charge as much as a big repair place. This can be a good deal if you know the mechanic or they have done good repair jobs for someone you know. The bad thing about getting a good mechanic to do extra work they may not have time when you need them. In this case you should try to get your repairs done where the mechanic works. Most of the time if you ask your mechanic about the place where they work they will tell you the truth about the place where they work.

You should always ask a lot of people where they get their cars repaired because there are a lot of rip off places. A lot of mechanics change jobs all the time so it alright to ask how long they have worked at the same place. You should never get someone to repair you car who has never been certified to do the repair. There are a lot mechanics charging you more because they took more time than needed because they were not sure how to do the job. If you want to be sure you are not being cheated you should ask for repair cost more than one place.

It is a good idea to always know what the part you need cost from a car parts store. The Internet is a good place to look for prices and most of the time it will be cheaper. A good mechanic will not mind telling you the difference between buying the cheaper or the higher priced part if you are working on you own car. Sometimes it is better to buy the better made part because it will last longer. If a mechanic also makes money off the parts they put on your car they will always use the part that cost more.

Make for yoy old Ford lights, like a new BMW? Why not ... On "theirs" know-how, we can always find pliers, wire cutters or a saw for metal.

Angel Eyes – know-how of BMW. Overall the lights in the form of luminous white circles like not everyone, but if you so desire and you are not afraid of problems with traffic police, “Angel Eyes” could be put into the domestic car. Best of all – a car with a round front optics, for example. Of course, the same can be done with other cars, for example, “old” BMW E30 – look, it will then be much steeper.

For the work necessary to get a transparent plastic rod, capable of withstanding high temperature. You can search in the stores where they sell curtains and blinds. Of the tools you need pliers, wire cutters or a saw for metal, files or boomerang with cut-off wheels, building hairdryer, soldering iron. Another plane will need more capacity, which can put the rod, a large round pot (for example, from the Bulgarian canned tomatoes), masking tape (better – coal), resistors of 220 ohms, 3.5 volt LED (4 pieces), wires and connectors

We’ll have to select the length of the rod: for example, a piece of thin hose. Cut the rod. Warm it in the prepared container hairdryer or boil – until then, until tender.

Carefully remove the workpiece pliers, wrap around the banks. Hold until the workpiece has cooled.
Portrayed resistors to the legs of the LED. Each lamp should be on 2 diode. LED to the “plus” Overall lamp, do not confuse the polarity. All connections must be carefully insulated tape.
Check how it works.

Take the ring of several dozen nightlife to a depth of not more than 1 / 3, on the outside. Naipaul needed so that the light has turned “radiant” and it will not “Angel Eyes”, and heaven knows what. Working boomerang (as you can and a saw), be careful.

To install the ring in the lamp will have to remove the glass. Standard “cabarets” we took out – and it is desirable to suppress the hole. A diode placed at the top, so as not conspicuous. The ring is held without a fixture, pressed to the glass reflector.

Unfortunately, the picture can not convey the real picture. In fact, the luminescence is weaker and visible only to dash in place nightlife.

Tuning – it slippery. All this you have done at your own risk. If passing inspection, the inspector will look at “Angel Eyes”, he’ll always governed. However, once a year and the lights can be changed at regular …

Dare and shine!

Car tires are more important than most people give them credit for. They are literally your link with the road. Simple maintenance, like correct tire pressure and adequate tread, will not only keep you safe on the road, but also give your tires a greater life-span.

Car tires are a lot more essential than many people afford them credit. They literally connect you to the road. Probably the most harmful situation for you to be in, is out of, or in bad connection with the roadway. In this predicament you are not able to give any input to your direction, and that is really bad news, when you are going over 60 m.p.h. without any means to prevent yourself from ramming into something. Friction is what is needed and there are some variables that you do have control over, and some things that you don’t. You are accountable for your own life, and anyone else’s life within the car you are operating. This means you had best be sure that you have accommodated all the safety measures that you possibly can, to avoid issues from any road mishap.

Now, contact with the road has a number of factors involved, as previously mentioned. The majority of the friction arrives from the connection of the tire’s rubber with the road itself. Gravity and the over-all mass, or weight, of your vehicle is what is causing this contact, so naturally the greater the weight or mass, the greater the friction between the street and your car wheels, so the greater the grip on the road. Although this is a good thing, it can turn against you, through inertia. If the friction have been overcome, say after you have locked up the brakes, the inertia is made greater the heavier the vehicle and requires a lot more in the way of friction to stop it. Luckily, rubber and concrete, or asphalt, naturally create a great deal of friction.

Air pressure in tires will change the properties of the tire’s rubber by stretching it. So if a tire is overfilled, or has too much air pressure, this can decrease the availability of friction. This situation also means much less surface area to be able to grip the road.

Another most important factor affecting the overall performance of your tires, and therefore your vehicle, is tire tread. The ability of tread to make good contact with the road surface, is largely determined by outside, or environmental factors, that affect the actual surface of the road. Commonly known as the weather. Water, snow and mud decrease the availability of friction by filling the natural grooves in the road and decreasing the contact between the rubber and the road.

In hazardous weather conditions, the grooves in the tire tread gives the mud, etc, a place to go other than between the rubber and the road. This also diminishes the “hydroplaning” effect that you can get in really adverse weather conditions.

So, in order to be able to steer properly, being able to slow down and generally manage your vehicle safely as you drive, you need to always have good, well maintained tires, with adequate tread and air pressure.

Scott Hallock is a 28 year veteran in Law Enforcement and tells what the top six traffic violations that Police Officers look for.

Even though I have been a Police Officer for many years, I have to admit I still get nervous when I am driving in my private car off duty and see a Police car behind me.

A strange phenomenon happens when the Cops are around. All drivers, including me get what the Police call, “the halo effect”, and drive like little angels.

You know what I mean, we immediately slow down, check that are lights are working, think about if our tags are up to date, make sure everyone is wearing a seat belt and drive like an angel.

Then the Cop behind us changes lanes, speeds on by and we all let out a sigh of relief and take off our halos.

Here are the top six violations the Police look for:

Speeding

Speeding is the number one violation that Police look for. Speed kills and causes more accidents than any other violation.

Many Officers use high tech radar and can pick out a speeding car from the middle of a large group of cars a long way away. An officer also will become so familiar with speed he/she will be able to look at a car and tell exactly what speed that car is going, then use the radar to verify his/her estimation.

DUI

Driving while intoxicated. There are many books and articles written on this topic and unfortunately will continue to be more until people finally get the message to stop drinking and driving.

Officers dedicate their careers to finding, stopping, arresting and prosecuting drunk drivers and can spot a DUI driver a mile away. Thank you.

Unsafe driving

This includes: running stop signs and red lights, unsafe lane changes and turns, not yielding to other cars and pedestrians, reckless driving, following too close, road rage and any other unsafe behavior.

An Officer becomes so proficient at reading the traffic that he/she can watch the flow of traffic, be able to see anything out of the ordinary, and then go to check it out.

Equipment

Common equipment violations are two license plates, Current license tags, all lights, brake lights, turning signals and headlights working?

You may have called attention to yourself by not following the flow of traffic and made an unsafe driving mistake. The Officer will follow you, check to see if there are any equipment violations and perhaps stop you.

Cell phone

This serious violation is the more talked about and the one that gets the most attention right now. Everyone is aware of just how dangerous and deadly cell phone usage is while driving.

Not only is cell phone usage extremely dangerous, but they are becoming very annoying to everyone. Movie theaters, restaurants, lobbies of office buildings do not permit cell phones.

The Police are able to tell that you are on your cell phone because there is no other action we use to drive with our hand up to our ear. In other words, if your hand is up to your ear it could only mean you are on a cell phone.

Seat belt

Seat belt tickets are another violation that Police look for due to the damage and unnecessary injuries caused by not wearing one.

If you ask, any Police Officer, who has had to investigate a fatal traffic accident they will tell you how devastating it is to discover the victim was not wearing a seat belt and that the injuries would have been minor rather than fatal.

In conclusion

Traffic collisions kill and injure more people each year than any other crime. Keeping our streets safe is a tremendous task for our Officers, and we thank all of them for a job well done.

Let us all remember, to drive safely, be courteous and kind to each other and keep in mind that the Cops are watching.

It may not be by the artist – or a reproduction of an original even – but those swirls really are reminiscent of Monet at his best. This car is registered as historic and is one of the cooler examples of this genre as it was done with a great deal of care and – self evidently – by someone who knew what they were doing. Perhaps the (original) owner was the artist or perhaps they paid someone to do it – you can’t really tell from this picture. You can always, always tell when it is the over keen owner trying to stamp their personality on their vehicle, however.

Flower Empower

There is absolutely no doubt that the paint job on this car was done by the owner – and that they probably didn’t go to art school either. The fact that it does not take a latter day Sherlock Holmes to jump to that conclusion is rather tempered by the slogan on the side of the car. While the paint work is amateur the thought is soulful. It reads ‘We can’t cure the world of sorrows but we can choose to live in joy’. It almost makes up for the rest of the car. But not quite.

The Fan Boy

Some people are so enamoured with their cars that they have to personalise them to the extent which leaves the rest of us perplexed, somewhat bewildered but every now and again impressed. The owner of this car has really done themselves proud with the Aliens motif – and has gone that further mile to get a license plate that relates to the art. The art is excellent but you might be forgiven for being startled if you were fifty meters behind this beauty.

Why Hilary Lost

Most of the world shrugged and moved on when Hillary Clinton lost that darned nomination but if you have been having sleepless nights wondering why the former First Lady never made the throne of a republic then here you finally have your answer. There will be in the future no need for those sleeping tablets and you can return to your bed knowing that you will finally get some rest. It is obvious, however, that much love has been squandered, sorry lavished in the production of this paean to politics and so we will linger here for a second or two.

There is no doubt that this car should have featured in the TV series Ugly Betty as it shares the aesthetics of the TV show’s eponymous lead character. Plus, in true fashion mode (get it) even the art itself is accessorised with plenty of coins and, erm, other things which are some way left of definition.

Instead of doing another sequel to Night At The Museum they should make a movie entitled Night on the Roof of this Car. The myriad of toys, statuettes and other wot nots heaped across its roof would surely fill a ninety minute celluloid blockbuster – if they were to come alive that is. One suspects that all the glue used to put this baby together might, however, have already put paid to that.

The Spongebobmobile

Well, well, well and what do we have here? Not the most professional paint job ever, it has to be admitted. Yet as a homage to one of the best animated toons ever created then this has to get at least eight out of ten. Even the seats inside are yellow, which is a great touch. Really. But…

Less is Sometimes More

Sometimes people can be overambitious and the old artistic rule of ‘less is more’ works just as well when it comes to giving your car a makeover as it does for anything else. Just a little work towards the rear and you have what some might call a motor with personality – but not too much. After all, they may say that the car is the star but if it is only the car that gets the looks and the attention then perhaps you haven’t done the job quite right after all.

I Made This!

No, you didn’t kid. Now stop jay walking or we will tell your Mom.

The Peace Car

In this day and age where we are constantly bombarded by images of violence and war on the TV, who can blame people if they harken back to the days of peace, love and John Lennon? It may be something of a throwback but the sentiments are just fine in our books. So, it isn’t a professional job – we don’t you just love all of that CND symbolism? What with the flowers, the rainbow and good old Planet Earth (realistically orbited by the moon) it makes you come over all Simon and Garfunkel.

Scooby Doo, Where Are You?

Let us stay a few decades or so in the past to take a look at this marvellous Volkswagen Camper. Inside it there are several animated humans talking about their latest adventure and a toon pooch tucking in to his snacks. As has been said before in this piece, if the owner has some aesthetic sensibilities (even if it is trapped in a decade that taste forgot) then the result can be quite satisfying. Don’t you just know what the police would find in there if they chose to stop the vehicle? Answers on a postcard.

There isn’t much point in sending that postcard. There are no prizes and besides, if you have a bumper which reads ‘flashbacks happen’ then what one earth (with the moon orbiting nicely) do you expect?

Euro Trash

Image Crdeit

The streets of France are adorned with tastefully built buildings and even more tastefully dressed people. It is enough to make the visiting American cry with the agony of shame – as once Adam did in Eden. So, why not spoil it all with something completely and utterly devoid of any taste whatsoever. Sounds like a plan.

The Jackson Pollock

Is your head hurting yet?

The Dual Personality

This motor has something of a split personality. Half of it exhorts the local population to love one and all and then the other part of it suggests that we all fight back. Kick ass and Kiss, well, whatever you like perhaps.

The Politico

Although this may not classify as a paint job – it really does say something that perhaps to which perhaps we should all listen.

The Italian Job

Trust the Italians to do something in a classy almost impeccably irreproachably subtle way. That’s just like them, isn’t it? This car was spotted in the Jewish Ghetto in Rome and is probably the classiest of all the vehicles we have seen before – if not the most interesting.

Captain Courageous

Sometimes art can be just for art’s sake – after all. However, to finish this short tour, a word of advice. Think long and hard about the paint job you are about to give your beloved car. Plan it out, think about the design and perhaps consider getting professionals in to finish (or rather do) the hard work for you. Otherwise you might end up with something looking like this.

The Mini - iconographic British car as driven in The Italian Job and Austin Powers - celebrates its 50th birthday in August 2009. Get your spark plugs out as we celebrate the ups and downs of this famous little British motor.

On August 26,1959, Project ADO15 was launched by The British Motor Company (BMC). Otherwise known as the Mini, this car would become an icon of the 1960s and, from then has enjoyed continued success in one guise or another. Voted the second most influential car in history (after the Ford Model T) the design of the car allowed for eighty percent of its floor space to be used by passengers.

Ironically, this little motor owes its existence to a fuel crisis. In 1956 the Suez Crisis brought about a fuel shortage in the UK. The British, although they had been accustomed to rationing everything during the Second World War, found that because of the conflict over in Suez that fuel was once again scarce – and expensive. Sales of car plummeted, but the market for the cheap and small German Bubble car boomed. The then head of the BMC reportedly stated in a fit of uniquely British apoplexy ‘God damn these bloody awful Bubble Cars. We must drive them off the road by designing a proper miniature car’.

The first Mini off the production line would never be sold and is so still in excellent condition (see above). It is now kept at the Heritage Motor Center in the UK. Before it got to this point, the measurements were laid down and a remarkably small design team (three designers, four draughtsmen and a couple of engineering students) got to work. The economy of the car would mirror that of the size of the team that designed it. By the end of 1957 they had already designed the proto-mini, which they labeled the ‘Orange Box’ because of its color.

By August 1959, the first cars were ready and before the end of the year the first one was even sold to the Englert family in Texas (see picture above). The car quickly came to be thought of as quintessentially British (being manufactured in both the Longbridge and Cowley plants in England. It wasn’t long, however, before factories also sprang up in Australia, Spain, Chile, Belgium Portugal and South Africa. Even the Italians got in on the act (much to the chagrin of Fiat) where it was marketed as the Innocenti. In Denmark it was marketed as The Partner (see below).

So, was it a Morris or was it an Austin? Well the Mini was marketed under both names for ten whole years. It wasn’t until 1969 that it was branded in its own right. For people who wanted a little more speed (boy racers of the time perhaps) the Cooper “S” and Mini Cooper were introduced as much sportier versions that were capable (and went onto) of winning the fabled Monte Carlo Rally. Four times. Part of the attraction of the Mini, having said this, was that it handled supremely well for a car of its size. One of its designers, the legendary Issigonis said “I make my cars with such good brakes, such good steering, that if people get into a crash it’s their own fault”.

The Mini continues to this day to be popular at rallies and championships, though it will never again reach the head heights of the sixties. The one below was competing in the Historic Touring Car Race at Donnington in 2006.

The popularity of the vehicle was aided in no small part to its appearances in a number or movies and TV show. It was featured in The Bourne Identity, and Larac Croft: Tomb Raider. It has also appeared in many TV shows, including Mr Bean and The Prisoner. However, it will be most remembered (on film at least) for the breathtaking getaway scenes in the 1969 movie The Italian Job. The movie was remade in 2003 using a similar (ahem) vehicle.

Although the sales were slow to begin with more than a million Mark I Minis were sold in the 1960s. They were sold for a very small price – less almost than the cost of making them. The Ford car company, in fact, bought one and deconstructed it, just to see if they could make a cheaper car. They came to the conclusion that they couldn’t. The Mini made its money really through what we would call today peripherals.

These were sold in order to accessorize the car and – this may surprise you – included such things as we would think of as standard today. The laws of the time meant that cars could be sold without them, but the money came in from sales of such items as seat belts, heaters, radios and door mirrors – and extra lights. It was really another time, another place!

The Mini was cheap, had a simple design and was, considering the numbers made, ubiquitous. This made it a candidate for body replacement and kit cars based on the car number over a hundred. Even today, years after production of the original(s) has ceased, there are still plenty of spare parts to be had for races and enthusiasts in general. In one shape or form the original Mini will go on for decades to come. Many, many shapes.

In the sixties and seventies the Mini became a fashion statement, seen to be driven by many of the hippest celebrities of the era, including three out of four of The Beatles, Peter Sellers and Britt Ekland. Many of the examples driven by celebrities were customized, a trait that would continue throughout the years, leading to occasional extremes. To customize or not to customize, with apologies to Shakespeare, does not seem to be the question.

The Mini Mark I lasted until 1967 and like Doctor Who, the car was to go through many reincarnations in the following decades, ending up with the Mark VII, launched in 1996. Motor swaps in to old models are now commonplace, due to good handling and low weight of the car.

This souping up increases the speed of the Mini quite effectively! So, why not go the whole hog – eventually the Mini convertible became available as well. The Mini has always appealed to aficionados, young and old and the urge to modify seems irresistible. The Minis below, seen racing in Birmingham (UK, not Alabama) were all aged between eleven and fourteen. Boy racers, indeed!

Although production of the Mini ceased in 2000, this was not the end of the story. In a move that probably made the head of the British Motor Company spin in his grave, the German manufacturers BMW took over production in 2000 and quickly announced the BMW MINI (note the capital letters). However, Leonard Lord, the old head of the BMC can rest easy in his grave. It took the new German owners one month longer to roll of their one millionth MINI than it did to complete the same number of the original.

So, Happy Anniversary to the original – and the best – and here’s to another fifty years!

The Ford Focus RS( Rallye Sport) WRC(World Rally Car) is built by M-Sport for the BP Ford Rally Team and based on the Ford Focus Climate 2 litre production hatchback, developed to compete in the World Rally Championship.

In 1999 the first version of this car appeared, replacing the Ford Escort WRC. It debuted in the Monte Carlo Rally and since then was immediately on the pace, setting many fastest stage times. However,he use of an illegal water pump disqualified the two cars from the event. McRae gave the Focus its first major win on the Safari Rally Kenya finishing over 15 minutes ahead of the second placed Toyota. The WRC’s car’s suspension was designed by the same engineer who designed the base Focus.

Jost Capito, director of Ford Special Vehicle Engineering in Cologne, says: “It means motorsport gets the latest technology and knowledge of the cars we are working on. It’s also great motivation for engineers who normally work on standard cars. If they’re quick and have expertise, they can work on performance programmes.”

One upshot of this could be that they take the experience of different work style and mindset back into mainstream engineering. It may not appear very, but approach seems to work well for a racecar.

A new design of Focus WRC appeared in 2003, named Focus RS WRC 03. The car had most of its parts redesigned. It had a distinctively lighter body shell and a new aerodynamically enhanced front bumper and wing. It was Markko Märtin,an Estonian rally driver, who drove the car to two world rally victories.

The 2004 and 2005 Focus WRCs were marvellous outcomes based on the RS WRC 03. The Focus RS WRC 04 won three events. Again it was Markko Märtin who made the victories possible.

By 2005, the car became quite uncompetitive and had no major wins. This lead to the development of a brand new model the Focus RS WRC 06,fitted with a Duratec engine. This car underwent a series of incremental improvements in both the engine and body to get around 20kg off its weight. This allowed the team to position ballast in areas where weight distribution was needed. This optimised both the handling and balance of the car, resulting in twelve world rally wins, starting with the 2006 Season opener Monte Carlo Rally. This time it was Marcus Gronholm behind the wheel.

The Focus RS WRC 07 is based on the 2006 model. Ford’s technical director Christian Loriaux says, “The changes on the new car are mainly to save weight and to improve efficiency, driveability and performance at the bottom end of the range.”
The car debuted very successfully at the Finland rally in July 2007,collecting the first and second place. In the subsequent German event, its performance extended Ford’s lead in the constructor’s championship to 143 points,41 more than Citroen. Later at the 2008 Swedish Rally,it made history when Jari Matti Latava used the car to become youngest-ever driver to win a world rally.
The Focus RS WRC 08 is based on the 2007 model. The car with its new front aero design was seen first at the Rallye Deutschland 2008 Shakedown. It not only includes design style changes but major improvements in the engine too. The revolutionized design gave it four rally wins in 2008.

The 2009 version of the Focus RS WRC includes some style changes to the lights frame and rear bumper. Capito says: “To be competitive you’ve got be close to the limits of what’s possible within regulations early on-after that only small steps are possible.”
Today Ford Focus, WRC is regarded as one the best sports cars in the world, and among the fastest ever European production car. Modifications in the design has helped it extend its lead in the rally championship. From 1999 till 2008,it has ,on its credit,a total of 36 victories and hopefully will continue to grow in future.

This is an article about opinions and suggestions about Toyota's current car problems.

For around 30 years we have come to expect quality products when it comes to Japanese automakers, Toyota even surpassed General Motors and the other Big Three players when it comes to being the worlds largest automaker. With many North Americans turning their backs from “American” cars and eyeing foreign car makers, Toyota is a big contender for their money. But now with over 50 deaths and thousands of accidents caused by faulty brakes, Toyota was forced to put millions of it’s cars on the recall list. There are speculations about what causes these problems, they include:

after market floor-mats interfering with the gas pedal’s arc (sometimes lodging itself under the mat and causing involuntary acceleration)

computer glitch that causes the car’s speedometer to surge and later disappear when the car’s on-board computer is checked for problems.

Of course, Toyota has done its own research and conducted its own experiments to sift out what could be wrong with their car lineup. Are Toyota’s still drivable? My opinion in this matter is: Yes! There is a very small chance that this malfunction could occur when you’re behind the wheel, but if you’re prepared for this problem and react with the proper solutions you should be able to walk away from your car every time.

No matter which problem is causing these dangerous results, there are a couple ways to counteract them and bring your car to a stop. One way is to shut off your car by turning your car off (while still in drive) by turning the key counterclockwise. This will shut off the engine and stop the car from accelerating any further, on the other hand you also lose power steering and power brakes (both will still work- but require more effort). I would only recommend this under extreme circumstances due to the lack of control you end up with. When you have turned the key back, press as hard as possible on the brakes (they will not engage as quickly or with same pressure as normal so keep pressing).

Another solution is to shift the car into neutral (whether or not your car is automatic or manual transmission). Once you do this the engine will start to rev very loudly (since the engine is still engaged but under no load), you are still in control of the car with power steering and brakes but the high RPM’s may cause engine problems later.

These solutions are not proven to work on EVERY car but the general idea works in theory and are not to be used unless advised to do so by traffic authority or a certified car safety instructor. I am neither of these so you should follow these suggestions at your own risk.
