Some people talk about how much they love to travel on their own. Apparently, there are more and more women who prefer to travel on their own. Is this really the case? Or do they just not want to admit that they'd rather have a travel companion?

How do you prefer to travel? Would you like to have a travel buddy who has the same interests as you? Someone who you can share your travel experience with?

Hi everyone - I'm back! It's been a very long time but I have decided to keep the blog going as many of my followers have asked what happened and they told me that they enjoyed reading my blog so here I am again.

I've been to some exciting places since 2011 and I am looking forward to share my experiences with you.

So please do keep reading as I go along and let me know what you like and what you don't like.

SCOTLAND'S HERITAGE: DRYBURGH ABBEY

The series of Scotland's gems continues....

A few weeks ago, I visited some beautiful sites on the Scottish borders. One of them was the Dryburgh Abbey, built in 1150 by white-clad Premonstratensian canons.

It was a lovely day and, luckily, very quiet. If you are able to spend some time in Scotland, I would suggest to become a member of 'Historic Scotland'. The membership gives you access to a large number of historic sites all over Scotland. The Historic Scotland website is a good place to start looking when planning to visit historical sites.

Hot weather map

Have you wondered where the best places are to escape the cold weather between Christmas and New Year? It always takes me ages to find a place to escape but the most popular places cost a fortune! No pity for the small earner who lives in a cold country?

Luckily I came across a website that shows on a world map where the 'hot places' are. It's a good one and it's called 'Worldreviewer.com'. Have a look at their website if you are nosy and if you want to spend New Year's Eve in warmer climate.

Oh and please let me know if you find a good deal for a week in the sun between Christmas and New Year. I've not yet given up :-) (For flights from either Glasgow or Edinburgh airport, Scotland).

SCOTLAND'S GEMS - TROSSACHS

A few weeks ago I went to Loch Katrine where I spent the day with hubby John cycling along the Loch. It was a lovely day and on the way to the Loch, we stopped at Doune Castle for a short visit. This lovely 14th century castle has a lot of charm and is definitely worth a visit. For more information about Doune Castle click here.

The Trossachs are one of my favourite areas in Scotland, not far from Glasgow and Edinburgh. Definitely worth spending a few days while travelling Scotland. There is so much to do and to see and if you are an outdoor person, you definitely won't be disappointed.

My husband and I went for a nice walk along the Union canal today. We ended up following a path that led us to the Avon river. It was so beautiful, we continued walking along the path on the way home.

West Lothian is amazing! There is so much to discover and for nature lovers, the ideal place to recharge your batteries and to rewind.

ANDALUCIA

Dear reader

It is the time of the year when I think of holidays. I'm still at University and I am getting exhausted and fed up with studying. What I miss most is the freedom to travel whenever I want. Unfortunately, my studies and my assignments won't allow me to travel anywhere until I finish my course, which is at the end of April (yippeeee!).

But this won't stop me thinking of a nice and warm place with lots of culture and sandy beaches to relax.

This year, I am planning a trip to Spain. In fact - I won a 7 day holiday to Spain, including flights and accommodation. How good is that???

I have the choice to go to Tenerife or to Andalucia. Years ago, I went to Almunecar in Andalucia (twice), to learn Spanish for two weeks. Almunecar is a beautiful little village by the sea, with lovely restaurants and small shops, approx. 2 hours north of Malaga.

Although I have already been to Andalucia, I am still considering going again as this time, I am planning to visit places like Cordoba, Seville, Granada and perhaps Tarifa (depending on how much time we have).

Has anyone been to any of these places? Or do you live in one of these villages/cities/towns?
Could you perhaps recommend some nice restaurants and must-see sights?

The best time for me to travel would be sometime in the second half of May 2011.

I look forward to your feedback, tips and other comments.

PRAGUE - DAY 2

On the second day in Prague we did a lot more than on our first day (naturally, because we had the full day to discover other parts of the city).

We took the metro to Malostranska from where we continued on a tram journey to the Prague castle.

The Prague castle is the largest castle in Europe and therefore we dedicated most of our time wandering around the castle, visiting the lovely Basilica of St. George, museums and exhibitions, also part of the castle as well as some buildings that belong to the castle.

You can buy different tickets, depending on what you want to see. John and I went for the 'small' tour for the price of CZK250, which included the following:
- Old Royal Palace
- Basilica of St. George
- Rosenberg Palace

For almost double of the price you can add the following to the tour:
- The Story of Prague Castle
- Convent of St. George - National Gallery
- Prague Castle Picture Gallery
- Powder Tower

We must have spent at least 2.5 hours at the castle if not more, so plan enough time for the castle visit.

There is a summer palace we wanted to visit too but it is much further out and you have to take a tram to get there. Unfortunately, John and I could not find it. It was clearly marked on our street map but when we got off the tram stop we were suppose to get off, we could not find any signs for the summer palace.

Several streets are leading into different directions and it was way too cold to check them all out so we left after approx. 10 minutes of wandering about. To be honest - I doubt that it was open at all as it was the end of January and this sight might only be open during the summer.

I recommend to ask at the tourist office for advice before you start exploring the city :-)

Nevertheless, it was an interesting journey on the tram. I love people watching and interestingly, there were more old people on the trams than young ones, and I am talking about the locals, not tourists.

Back to Mala Strana, still on the west side of the Vlatava river, also called the 'Moldau' in German language, we took some photographs of the front of the Charles bridge.

Before we went for a walk over the famous Charles bridge, we went to a lovely restaurant for lunch. I was keen on trying the Czech goulash with their famous dumplings so we both ordered two portions of lovely goulash and two pints of local lager. It was delicious!

The stroll over Charles bridge was interesting but immediately, John and I knew that we should come back at night when all the lights are on. Especially that particular night when we were there as it has been snowing during the day and we were hoping to get some lovely photographs taken (don't forget your tripod!).

Because we had a very late lunch, we did not feel extremely hungry but we were craving for cakes so we walked around the old city until we found a nice cafe bar called Cafe-Cafe. The cakes were mouthwatering and the ambience was really nice. We ordered two amazing looking cakes and a bottle of lovely green Veltiner white wine and looked at the photographs we took during the day.

Our hotel had a small sauna which could be booked for private use so we warmed up in the sauna after we returned to the hotel.

Later in the night, after a quick nap (we were exhausted from all the walking around with freezing temperatures), we went to the Charles bridge again and took some fantastic pictures. We were extremely lucky as there were only very few people on the bridge. It was approximately 11.30pm and around -2 degrees Celsius. Lovely!

On the way back to the hotel we stopped at another bar for a shy good night drink.

The next day would be as exciting and busy as the previous day but we had only 3 days and wanted to make the most out of it.

PRAGUE - DAY 1

As promised, here is the first part of my travel report from my recent visit to Prague.

Many of my friends have been to Prague and they said that it was a lovely place to visit so I finally managed to travel to Czech Republic's capital too.

Luckily, Jet2 offers direct flights from Edinburgh to Prague. We left Edinburgh on a Thursday morning (7:30am) and returned on Sunday evening around 8:30pm. Just enough time for a city break in Europe.

Once we arrived in Prague, we took bus no. 119 to the nearest underground station called DEJVICE from where we got a connection to Nam. Miru, a metro station 10 minutes from where we stayed.

It was lunch time when we checked into our hotel and we decided to find a local restaurant for lunch which turned out to be the best pizza I ever tasted in my whole life! It was simply amazing! Staff was extremely friendly and the prices were fair. The restaurant is called MATYLDA and has its own website which you can check out for further information. It is located just a couple of blocks from the Nam. Miru metro station.

After lunch, we decided to walk into the old town. As we had only approximately a couple of hours of daylight left, we did not bother to visit the castle that day. Instead, we just wandered about and took photographs of the stunning architecture of Prague's buildings.

Even the city's large post office was located in an unusual building with lovely wall paintings. Luckily I managed to take some photographs before the security guard told me off :-)

Again, we decided to have dinner locally, to experience the real Prague and to be amongst the locals. It was pleasant and we did not have any reasons to complain. It was a rather cosy place with only locals. John and I just got something small as we felt like we were eating all day long :-)

This restaurant was also in the Prague 2 district and is called 'Restaurace U Moznych'. A chicken salad costs CZK 147 and a pint of beer CZK 39, which is around GBP 1.40 (roughly), as per 28 January 2011.

My husband and I are going on a short trip to Prague later in the week for 4 days and I am very excited about it.

Many of my friends have been to Prague and they say it is a romantic city with lots of culture and history.

EDINBURGH HOGMANAY 2011 - New Year's eve

Happy New Year everyone!

John and I went into Edinburgh for New Year's Eve. We watched the fireworks from Castle Street which is, in my opinion a good place to see them. Of course, we did not have the best view but it was not too crowded and we thought it was still lovely.

If you want more action, you can buy tickets for the party on Princes Street. Every year there are concerts on 31st December and this Hogmanay it was Biffy Clyro who entertained guests at the West Princes Street Gardens. There is also a street ceilidh taking place on New Year's Eve which will keep you warm while waiting for the midnight gun that's being fired from the Edinburgh Castle.

EDINBURGH HOGMANAY 2011 - Torchlight Procession

This year's Hogmanay was a great success in my opinion. The weather was kind to us and the 4 day event offers something for everyone.

Together with some Swiss friends who are currently visiting, we joined the Torchlight Procession on the 30th December. This is the opening event for the Edinburgh Hogmanay where people can purchase a torch at the parliament square, from where the procession starts. The event is free of charge and the money that was raised by the sale of torches will be donated to Barnardo's Scotland as well as the Radio Forth's Cash for Kids.

An estimated 25,000 people attended this event and the atmosphere was great.

The 'Son et Lumiere & Firework' draws the finale where, traditionally, a Viking long ship is set on fire. This spectacle has been accompanied by pipes and drums (traditional and contemporary). The firework display marked the closure of this event and was as breath taking as I expected.

Switzerland in December

I had a great time on my recent visit to Switzerland. Visiting family and friends is always exciting for me as I don't see them very often. This Christmas, I stayed in Schaffhausen, a lovely city where I have many friends and where my family lives.

A shopping trip to Zurich is a must - especially before Christmas. All shops display lovely festive decoration which invites customers to spend money :-)

People put up cute decorations and this year I was lucky to celebrate a white Christmas. Usually it snows weeks before Christmas and by the 25th December, the snow is gone.

Unfortunately, the snow did not last very long as temperatures rose above zero degrees Celsius and after a couple of days, little evidence of a white Christmas was left.

Nevertheless, the city of Schaffhausen offers a lot for visitors.

The architecture of the old town is very interesting; the city offers a variety of pretty little restaurants and bars and its rural surrounding is ideal for biking, hiking, walking and sledging.

The Rhein river is great for canoeing, riding kayaks or boats, swimming or simply just walking along the shore to the nearby Buesingen.

Tips for visitors:
Europ's largest waterfall, the 'Rheinfall' can be found in Neuhausen, a suburb of Schaffhausen and is definitely worth a visit. Every year, ten thousands of visitors from all over the world travel to Neuhausen to see this spectacular waterfall. Click on the link of 'Rheinfall' to see some images I found on Google. SWISS WINTER WONERLAND

Dear reader,

I am currently in Switzerland, visiting family and friends and I thought I'd share some of the pictures I took in the last few days.

At the moment we do have snow in Schaffhausen, where I am staying but it rained today and I am not sure if the snow will stay until Christmas. We all hope that it will snow again in the next couple of days as it would be just fantastic to have a white Christmas. The hills have been fantastic for sledging and walking and my friend and I are planning to go sledging next week if the conditions are right.

I also learned that Schaffhausen had a new ice rink built recently which is very exciting. There are now two ice rinks available - an indoor and an outdoor one, both around 1800 square metres in size which is great! My friend and I are planning to go ice skating next week so I am very excited.

I will post more photos of the hills that surround Schaffhausen shortly.

SARDINIA - PART 2

I just discovered that I had more pictures taken in the north of Gallura and Santa Teresa di Gallura, which I would like to share with you.

This photo was taken in Santa Teresa di Gallura. It shows the busy town centre and the main road, leading to the shore.

Santa Teresa di Gallura is a lovely place by the sea and, as mentioned in my previous post, the landscape and nature in this part of Sardinia is breathtaking.

The Torre Spagnola is worth a visit and if the weather is good, you should be having a spectacular view.

After leaving Luogosanto, we headed south towards Tempio Pausania.

Every once in a while we stopped for pictures and simply just to enjoy the beautiful nature. The mountainous landscape is breathtaking and absolutely lovely.

The picture of Nuraghe Majore, the 'cave', was taken somewhere between Cantoniera Padula and Tempio Pausania.

Just followe the brown signs to the sight. What we found is a stony small cave looking building with a curious looking entrance.

When we entered the 'cave' we noticed that something was living in there. Soon after we spotted bats all over the sealing, hanging upside down and resting.

Some of them were even flying around which was interesting to watch.

SARDINIA - PART 1

Sardinia is an amazing place to visit.

There is so much to see and to do and I won't even start mentioning the food.

John and I travelled to Sardinia at the end of May for two weeks. The timing was great as it was not as busy as it usually gets in the summer and the accommodation prices are much lower too.

We flew with Ryanair from Edinburgh to Bergamo, near Milan, where we spent a night because the connection flight was not leaving until 6am the next day.

As soon as we arrived in Alghero (around 8.30am), we picked up our car at the airport and headed north west. The road along the coast went through some lovely villages where we stopped and took photographs.

The scenery is amazing and I could have stopped every five minutes to take a photograph of something interesting.
The first night we spent on a farm B&B, in the middle of the woods, 1.5km from Luogosanto, which is a small village in the hinterland of the Gallura.

We just wanted to stay somewhere in the nature, nice and quiet. Somewhere from where we can go walking and discover other places.

The B&B we stayed at was called Stazzi La China B&B. Have a look at their website for more information and for prices.

John and I went for a walk after we checked into the B&B. As mentioned before, it was in the middle of the woods, away from civilisation.

All we saw that evening was a tortoise (see photo) and the B&B's guard dog.

The next day we went for a drive in the northern part of Sardinia to explore the north a bit more. We only had a couple of days in the northern part but we managed to visit some towns and sites.

One of the sites we visited was the 'Necropolis Le Muri'. This is an archaeological site, dating back to 3000 B.C.

We also went to Santa Teresa Gallura for a day visit, where we had a lovely lunch (pasta per favore).

Sardinia is a beautiful island... the nature is breathtaking and it is almost a shame to stay in one city only. There are so many beautiful places to discover. Two weeks is not enough time to see it all, but it is enough to explore this lovely island a bit.

EDINBURGH 2010 - WINTER WONDERLAND

So far, Scotland has been getting all the snow in the world.

It's been snowing in the past few weeks like there is no tomorrow and it will continue like this next week.

I love walking on snow and feeling the snow crunch under my feet but I do not like the slush at all.

Nevertheless, I went for a walk a few days ago and took some photos of Edinburgh and surrounding.

The Edinburgh Castle looked particularly gorgeous, all covered in snow.

LUXOR

I just looked at some photographs from my trip to Luxor and I thought I'd share them with you.

Luxor is a very interesting city with an amazing history and architecture and a population of just below 490,000. It is sitting on the banks of the river Nile with a view over the Valley of the Kings and Queens.

It takes only approx. five and a half hours by plane from the UK and it is a good base for trips to other places.

We spent only 5 days in Luxor but there is so much to do and to see that you can easily spend a whole week or longer in and around Luxor.

I was fascinated by the Valley of the Kings although the tombs were mostly empty. All mummies and valuables are either in the museum in Luxor or in the one in Kairo.

The Temple of Deir El-Bahri, better known as the temple of the Queen Hatshepsut, also left a great impression on me. Also, you cannot stay in Luxor without visiting the Karnak temple.

The museum in Luxor is also a must-see. It showcases architecture and other interesting ornaments and valuables that were found in the tombs, as seen in the following photographs.

The Sonesta St. George hotel was our hotel, located in the middle of Luxor. Staff were nice and it also had a swimming pool which was a nice thing to have as temperatures can get very hot.

John and I were visiting Luxor at the end of November and it was over 32 degrees Celsius. So if you are looking for a nice getaway and to escape the winter, Egypt is the place to go. It does get cooler in the winter thou but not as cold as in Europe.

A lot of my friends went on a Nile cruise from Luxor to Asswan and they absolutely loved it! I would like to do that next time I visit Egypt. There are some fantastic places to discover and the Abu Simbel temple as well as the pyramids of Gizah are on my list of things to see before I die :-)

Unfortunately, all my other photographs were taken with the non-digital camera, hence not more photographs of the other places I have mentioned. But I will try to scan them and create an album in the near future so watch this space!

Tips:
Don't accept the first price offered on taxi rides or other transportation. Haggling is the major activity in Egypt so go ahead and haggle yourself silly :-) John and I managed to get a taxi for $25 for 5 hours!!! The driver took us to the Valleys, the Hatshepsut temple as well as the Karnak temple. He waited for us in his taxi while we did sight seeing.

Alternatively, you can book a tour in air-conditioned buses with tour operator that will charge you slightly more. We would have paid around $100 per person for a trip to the sights. If you don't feel comfortable doing it on your own, book with the tour operators but if you are travelling on a budget, get yourself a private taxi. You don't have to miss out on anything!

AVIEMORE - PART 2

In January, Aviemore hosts the annual Husky competition which is great fun and a must see for dog lovers.

John and I went to see the competition twice and believe it or not - last year was the first time in 15 years where the race took place on SNOW! Check out the BBC report for more information.

I know, it sounds strange but they haven't had any snow up there during the race weekend for the last 15 years.

Nevertheless, it is good fun to watch those lovely dogs racing.

My favourite part is to walk around the car park and to cuddle the dogs :-)

I hope you like the pictures I took a couple of years ago. As you can see, there is literally no snow.

Hard to imagine, after all the snow we've had so far in Edinburgh! I am sure that this year will be different altogether where lack of snow won't be an issue.

For those who are interested in attending, the next event will take place from 22 January - 23 January, 2011 at Loch Morlich, Cairngorms, Scotland.

As mentioned in the previous post, Aviemore is popular with skiing.

Every year thousands of people take their ski up to Aviemore for a weekend or during the school holidays so if you want to visit Aviemore in the wintertime, make sure you book your accommodation in advance.

AVIEMORE - PART 1

Recent posts of mine were covering stories about travelling to warm countries and I am the one to blame for people wanting to escape the cold (sorry guys).I have therefore decided to write about winter activities rather than snorkelling and scuba diving in the next few posts.

The following pictures were taken in and around Aviemore, where John and I went snowshoe walking.

This picture of a frozen lake Morlich was taken on the way to the ski slopes.

We were lucky that day as the snow was ideal for snowshoe walking and and the scenery was breath taking and we did not come across many people either.

It was very romantic and idyllic with a phenomenal view.

Very often you can spot deer in the distance so don't forget to bring your binoculars.

Meall a'Bhuachaille, with an altitude of 810m (2657 ft) is the hill, also called a Corbett, you see in the photographs. That's the area where we went snowshoe walking.

Only 3 1/2 hours from Edinburgh and approximately half an hour east of Aviemore, this area is considered one of Scotland's gems. It lies within the Cairngorm national park and is well known for its skiing and as a winter holiday destination.

Accommodation is easy to find as there are many bed and breakfasts (B&B's) as well as hotels in and around Aviemore but I advise you to book in advance to avoid disappointment as Aviemore is extremely busy in the winter.
