From Denny: The past few months even I just can't watch Morning Joe, usually a pretty good political show - representing both major parties and views - for which I have much forbearance watching Joe go off and jump up on his usual soapbox for a too long of a monologue. The entire round table are now myopic, living in an echo chamber of gloom and doom, too grumpy, too negative for not good enough reasons, and just plain cranky old men - and one cranky women too influenced by their negativity. Not very attractive, guys. They have gotten lost in the weeds with far too much naval gazing on minutiae that the voters have no use for at all. Grabbed the remote and changed the channel.

Been changing the channel on Hardball, though not as often. All these shows want to do is show Donald Trump screaming yet some other stupid statement and then talk it to death, beat it back alive enough to catch a few breaths before expiring, and then beat it yet again. I'll tell you what: I'll walk on to your sets and gift you with a dead horse so the viewers get a better visual of how stupid this all looks...

It's never smart to promote constant hate programming. That's exactly what today's generation of media is promoting. Oh, they are fine on not hating gays, Muslims, blacks or cute little kids. But when it comes to challenging this constant stream of BS about Hillary Clinton it's downright alarming. For years the drum beat has been: "Hate Hillary! Lock her up! Hang the bitch!" as chanted often, loud and long at the Trump rallies. Even young children are screaming the same sentiments. You really have to ask yourself about this fascism going on in the Republican Party.

Fast forward to any Republican commentator: "I hate Hillary Clinton and always will!" Talk about never getting a fair hearing, a fair hearing, mind you, that she would be respectful and give to them.

When any Republican politician or Republican voter is asked: "Why do you hate Hillary Clinton?"
The answer is always, "I don't trust her."
"Why don't you trust her?"
"She lies."
"Can you prove it?"
"She's a big liar, that's it!" comes the reply.

Yet when you look at Donald Trump, he has literally lied about every subject he has talked about since he started his campaign. How can they distrust Hillary Clinton but trust Donald Trump based upon who they have been told is the liar? It's bizarre. Not much critical thinking going on here, that's for sure, even among journalists.

It's like a mass hysteria with these Republican folks. It's the exact same sales talk. Even their eyes glaze over like they've been hypnotized. I live in Louisiana, traditionally, a so-called "red" state. It's possible Louisiana may go blue this season. We have already elected a Democrat as Governor after the dismal mess a Republican Governor left our state financially. Hillary might want to spend some time campaigning here by early October. People here love to see a candidate come visit often to check on them and hear a candidate respect them enough to ask for their vote just as often.

Fight Hate in the world: "Love like you have nothing better to do with your time." - Denny Lyon. Visit Denny Lyon Gifts @ CafePress.com - see what's new!

Fascism and Hate: The average Republican voter has no cogent facts to back up the brainwashing programming they've been getting out of the Republican strategists and leadership for the past 30 years. It's ridiculous.

Now that a crazy and crass candidate like Trump has emerged at the top of the Republican ticket, all the fascist tendencies the Republican Party has hidden so well for decades is finally exposed.

Trump told his rally crowd of "Second Amendment people" to go out and kill Hillary Clinton. "You know what to do! You know what I'm talking about of what it will take to stop Hillary Clinton from taking your guns. Don't let her. Don't let her do it!"

Trump also instructed his people, like Nazi brown shirts, to go the polls on election day to protect their vote. Really? "You know you need to go there, along with the police and sheriffs to protect the vote so we don't get a rigged election." That statement was code to all the black people and perhaps Hispanics too. It was code for the police are going to harass you and check out if you have any outstanding warrants and arrest you. Trump is promoting fear and voter intimidation against people of color in order to win.

And then there is just the usual violence at the Trump rallies that he refuses to stop. There are always fist fights. As Trump himself says when he is vexed with a protester, "Sometimes I'd just like to hit them in the mouth, you know, bam!"

Let's not forget his thug, mafia style lawyer, who threatened to kill a journalist. That was priceless. There's also another mob guy in Trump's campaign that held a gun to the knee of a campaign worker while driving in the car, threatening him too. That now former worker is suing.

Trump is also fond of inciting the rally crowd to hate journalists, always pointing to the press area. It gets so bad many of these journalists felt the crowd was about to turn on them. At one rally, a female journalist was escorted out by a Secret Service guy on Trump's team. He thought it ridiculous what Trump had done and offered her safety.

Trump tries to use the press as his go-to scapegoat in case he doesn't like anything written about him that is not dropping down and worshiping at his feet like his hypnotized supporters. He also says the press lies when the press finds out his latest lies have no truth to back them up. Trump's strategy to destroy the credibility of the press is so he can finger point and say, "See! I told you it's a rigged election!"

Manipulating people's minds like this is cruel indeed. It also does nothing constructive for the country to move us forward dealing with serious issues. While 110,000 people were flooded out in our homes and small businesses here in Baton Rouge, my fellow journalists knocked this scary, odd disaster off the front page nationally to chase after the latest lie from Donald Trump. It seriously delayed the help thousands needed. You looked ridiculous and certainly insensitive. People lost everything they knew in one short day. People here lost their entire homes, all their cars and ran out of food waiting for the flood waters to go down. I'll say that again: You looked absolutely freaking ridiculous!

Quit promoting the hate agenda, like hating in politics is a good occupation. It isn't. It promotes so much discord that eventually turns to violence and more hating. Quit promoting this fascism that Trump and his campaign are wallowing in with great delight. It's one thing to highlight it from time to time in the news as counterproductive to the voting process. It's quit another when all you do is repeat it to the point of annoyance that has the effect to help hold the brainwashing propaganda in place.

Free the American soul from this negativity. The voters have told the press in every election cycle for more than 30 years, "I don't want to hear all this negativity! Stop!" And yet you keep delivering it. When are you going to wake up and realize you are promoting hate and a fascist agenda to take over American politics? The world looks to us for reason, steadfastness and a commitment to truth. You are scaring them all.

Resuters/James Lawler Duggan

From Denny: The FBI Director said that only three out of 30,000 deleted emails were classified, devoid of the appropriate markings labeling them as classified. Later that was revised to 100 emails not properly labeled as classified. After she was out of office those emails were later classified. Well, if she did not know they were going to be classified in the future how was she responsible for them before their classification?

As Clinton stated: If you have worked in the federal government and an email is classified it usually has a huge warning heading at the top of the email to let the recipient know the obvious. None of these emails mentioned by the FBI Director contained such a warning heading about classification.

The FBI Director, a staunch Republican, who you know received tremendous pressure from his party to put Hillary in jail, had to admit she did nothing criminally wrong. Well, at least he had the good character to put the Truth where it belonged. Did he think her unwise? Sure. She took responsibility for using two servers in order to preserve her family's privacy both from the press and political enemies hell bent on crucifying her. She gets it now.

Of course, the irony here is that her server was never hacked or compromised by a foreign state like Russia or China. Guess who was? ...

Why Get Involved Mugs

Get Involved: if you don't have a seat at the table you are probably on the menu - Senator Elizabeth Warren

The very people hell bent on trying to jail her were all hacked and seriously compromised: the Republican Party headquarters was hacked as was the Democrat Party. The FBI, the State Department, the Pentagon, the White House, various federal government agencies like the hack that took records of over 40 million former and current federal personnel were all perpetrated by foreign actors, notably Russia and China.

Now why should we be all terrified and shaking in our boots at the horrific thought that Hillary's server might have been hacked when the reality is that her accusers were all compromised to a person?

For thirty years the press and the determined political enemies have tried to make something out of virtually nothing when it comes to Hillary Clinton. We all know that the Republican predecessors of Hillary, Gen. Colin Powell and Condi Rice, did the same thing, had private servers. Yet when the FBI came knocking on their doors they were blown off and so the investigators did not persist. Clearly, Republicans get preferential treatment as opposed to Democrats in investigations with this FBI Director.

When you stop to think about this Republican political vendetta of thirty years and more you really have to ask what the hell is going on here to keep up this hate - and so vociferously, stirred up and perpetuated by the press? Isn't it time for this style of vicious unfounded politics to end? Isn't it time for the press to quit contributing to it just to sell market share? How depraved is that attitude? Is it really worthy of our country when there are so very many issues that need media attention and proper scrutiny?

Inspire Respect Mugs

"I am a Woman: treat me with the same respect you want for yourself and I will return the favor."

Let me share a thought with you. Well, you got this far into this article, didn't you? You didn't think I'd just leave you hanging? I'm fed up with various members of the press behaving in such a self-important and smug manner, as if they were appointed God to judge people like Hillary Clinton. Who? Plenty of them, notably today on Morning Joe was that guy Michael Wolff, from the Hollywood Reporter, a self-appointed expert and Howard Fineman, from the Huffington Post, as smug and obnoxious as ever. Their ability for critical thinking is so very limited, yet they couch everything in this emotional expert attitude, hoping they can fool enough people to swallow their drivel. Why anyone keeps either of them is beyond me. They are both dinosaurs.

The Enemies of Hillary Clinton and Their "Accomplishments"

For over thirty years, the Republicans have successfully held down wages in this country in order to please their billionaire donor class that keeps them in office. For thirty years, the Republicans have denied the average American a living wage on the minimum wage. How ridiculous is it that people have to work several jobs just to put a roof over their heads and pay minimum bills?

It's the Republicans that like to wreck the American economy. How? Too quick to wage war. Their famous Iraq and Afghan Wars just about broke this economy, sending it into a tail spin. The Republicans broke the Middle East, lit it on fire, and then said, "Who me? I didn't do that. That's Obama and Hillary's fault." Seriously? Obama has spent the past eight years trying to clean up that Republican hot mess decision to lie to the American people about why they went to war and then spend trillions of dollars waging war all to please their defense contractor class who keep them in office.

For decades Republicans have denied civil rights to the LGBT community, arguing they know best, selling religion as their excuse for their cultural discomfort for someone else's dire need. Really? Let me share yet another thought with you. It's smarter to help culturally fringed minority communities know they are accepted instead of the alternative.

What is the alternative? When a group or marginalized individual does not feel accepted they enter into the deepest of dark inner conflict. That conflict often spills out onto the stage of violence, impacting the greater community. You saw that with the Orlando shooter, a gay Muslim, who was culturally in conflict, not accepted, unable to reconcile his reality with his religion, his culture. So, he lashed out violently, trying to feel better by attacking others. Twisted thinking, true enough, but that is what happens when people are pressed into a dark small lonely place of pressured inner conflict. Sooner or later they feel compelled to do something to relieve that awful pressure.

<img alt="Keep Calm Really? Keep Calm Really? Woven Throw Pillow

Unleash your inner funny emotional diva.

Republicans have repeatedly refused to accept and legislate wage equality for women for over 40 years, denying every bill the Democrats put up. Is it any wonder this country is seething with so much anger in this presidential election year? When is anything positive going to get down for mainstream America and the middle class instead of the wealthy and corporations?

Don't even get me started on justice reform for the black community. Republicans have refused extra funding for proper community policing that is far less confrontational than this generation's police training of Dirty Harry tactics that are simply not funny.

So, fellow journalists, you need to do some serious soul searching, those of you who still have possession of your souls and haven't sold out just for money and fame. What is your proper focus? Is it on trying to prove a decent person like Hillary Clinton is guilty of nefarious acts and deserves jail? Is it on truly informing the public and the voter of what they need to know to carry on their daily business and be well informed enough to vote well?

The press should be focused upon what the voters want, not political enemies who are clearly incensed that Hillary Clinton's decades of good deeds and challenging the negative status quo just make them look bad in comparison. That's the real truth here. Fellow journalists, you look really really really bad doing the bidding of petty political enemies that will come and go when it is the truth that remains. Stick to the whole truth and you just might even look good doing it.

From Denny: Who knows you - as the reality you - better than your spouse? Well, former President Bill Clinton knocked it out of the park with his version of "the spouse speech" for a presidential candidate.

While some of the younger female commentators took the obtuse perspective and frowned upon Bill's speech as the only way to tell Hillary's story was to center it around Bill's life, most commentators understood what he was really doing with the chronicled narrative of Hillary's adult life once she and Bill met and joined forces to do good in the world. In fact, Bill Clinton did a great job of doing the Hillary campaign's job for them: opening a window into their private world to allow the public to know about the evolution of and entirety of Hillary...

When you want something done, hire a busy woman! Can you tell that Hillary took Louisiana in the primary? Geaux Hillary!

Many times it is difficult for public figures to speak about their private relationships so publicly, especially on a romantic level. Bill Clinton put it out there anyway. He has certainly mellowed since he left office, greatly matured - and it's a good thing to see his personal growth.

Bill Clinton made it clear that Hillary was a slow sell for marriage. What the public can derive from that story is that Hillary is not one to jump into serious situations without some deep thinking about the commitments involved, knowing long term is a long time. It also told you that Bill Clinton had to work hard to get her. That says that Hillary does not sell herself short or cheaply and has plenty of self-worth and confidence. Those are traits young girls can look up to and admire.

What was best about this speech is that Bill Clinton illuminated some areas of Hillary's life that those that know her well take for granted and just forget to extol as special. Hillary is no Johnny Come Lately to children's issues and disability rights. She has been working on tough societal issues since law school. She took an extra year for law school because she was working with children in poverty, determined to figure out how to make their lives better. She has been involved in doing this for over 40 years to this day, never stopping to make someone else's life better.

Many other speeches at the 2016 Democrat National Convention from ordinary people tell you how she has worked to make their lives better, from a 911 burn victim to a young man who has endured over 20 years of surgeries. Hillary still keeps in touch with these people decades later to check on their progress and well being. Can you see Donald Trump caring that much and doing the same? Yeah, me neither.

Bill Clinton told a narrative that many seasoned journalists did not know. You would think you would know all there is to know about the Clintons after all these years of caustic rhetoric and investigations that never were able to prove any guilt. Bill Clinton proved there is always more to know, more to smile about, and more to appreciate about the three dimensional person as opposed to the flat cartoon version the Republican war machine continues to falsely sell the American public.

Hillary isn't interested in advancing the TPP trade agreement. What she wants to accomplish for her first term is an ambitious project of putting Americans to work to completely revamp America's deteriorating infrastructure. Works for me. Geaux Hillary!

President Bill Clinton: In the spring of 1971, I met a girl. The first time I saw her, we were, appropriately enough, in a class on political and civil rights. She had thick blond hair, big glasses. Wore no makeup. And she exuded this strength of self-possession I found magnetic.

After the class, I followed her out, intending to introduce myself. I got close enough to touch her back, but I couldn’t do it. Somehow, I knew this would not be just another tap on the shoulder, that I might be starting something I couldn’t stop. I saw her several more times the next few days but still didn’t speak to her. Then one night in the law library talking to a classmate who wanted me to join the Yale Law Journal, he said it would guarantee me a job at a big firm or a clerkship with a federal judge. I really wasn’t interested — I just wanted to go home to Arkansas.

Then I saw the girl again, standing at the opposite end of that long room. Finally, she was staring back at me. So I watched her. She closed her book, put it down, and started walking toward me. She walked the whole length of the library, came up to me, and said, “Look, if you are going to keep staring at me, we at least ought to know each other’s name. I’m Hillary Rodham, who are you?” I was so impressed and surprised that, whether you believe it or not, momentarily, I was speechless.

Finally, I sort of blurted out my name and we exchanged a few words, and she went away. Well, I didn’t join the Law Review, but I did leave that library with a whole new goal in mind. A couple days later, I saw her again, wearing a long, white, flowery skirt, and I went up to her and she said she was going to register for classes for the next term. I said I would go too.

We stood in line and talked — you had to do that to register back then. I thought I was doing pretty well until we got to the front of the line and the registrar looked up and said, “Bill, what are you doing here? You registered this morning.”

I turned red and she laughed that big laugh of hers and I thought, well, heck, since my cover has been blown, I asked her to take a walk down to the art museum. We have been walking, and talking, and laughing together ever since.

And we have done it in good times, through joy and heartbreak. We cried together this morning on the news that our good friend and a lot of your good friend, Mark Weiner, passed away early this morning. We built up a lifetime of memories. After the first month and that first walk, I drove her home to Park Ridge, Illinois, to meet her family and see the town where she grew up, a perfect example of post-World War II middle-class America. Street after street of nice houses, great schools, good parks, a big public swimming pool. And almost all white.

I really liked her family, her crusty, conservative father, her rambunctious brothers, all extolling the virtue of rooting for the bears and the cubs. And for the people of Illinois here, they even told me what waiting for next year meant — could be next year, guys.

Now, her mother was different. She was more liberal than the boys. She had a childhood that made mine look like a piece of cake. She was easy to underestimate with her soft manner and she reminded me all over again of the truth of that old saying that you should never judge a book by its cover. Knowing her was one of the greatest gifts Hillary ever gave me.

I learned that Hillary got her introduction to social justice through her Methodist youth minister, Don Jones. He took her downtown to Chicago to hear Martin Luther King Jr. speak and he remained her friend for the rest of his life. This will be the only campaign of hers he ever missed.

When she got to college, her opposition to the Vietnam War compelled her to change parties and become a Democrat. And then between college and law school, on a total lark, she went alone to Alaska and spent time sliming fish.

More to the point, by the time I met her she had already been involved in the law school’s legal services project and she had been influenced by Marian Wright Edelman. She took a summer internship interviewing workers in migrant camps for Sen. Walter Mondale’s subcommittee. She had also begun working in the Yale New Haven hospital to develop procedures to handle suspected child abuse cases.

She got so involved in children’s issues that she actually took an extra year in law school working at the child studies center to learn what more could be done to improve the lives and futures of poor children. She was already determined to figure out how to make things better.

Hillary opened my eyes to a whole new world of public service by private citizens. In the summer of 1972, she went to Dothan, Alabama, to visit one of those segregated academies that enrolled over a half a million white kids in the South. The only way the economics worked was if they claimed federal tax exemptions to which they were not legally entitled. She got sent to prove they weren’t.

So she sauntered into one of these academies all by herself, pretending to be a housewife that just moved to town and needed to find a school for her son. And they exchange pleasantries and finally, she said, “Look, let’s get to the bottom line. If I enroll my son in this school, will he be in a segregated school? Yes or no?” And the guy said “Absolutely.” She had him. I’ve seen it a thousand times since.

And she went back and her encounter was part of a report that gave Marian Wright Edelman the force they needed to keep working to get the Nixon administration to take those tax exemptions away and give our kids access to an equal education.

Then she went down to South Texas, where she met one of the nicest fellows I ever met, the wonderful union leader Franklin Garcia, and he helped her register Mexican-American voters. I think some of them are still around to vote for her in 2016. And then, in our last year in law school, Hillary kept up this work. She went to South Carolina to see why so many young African-American boys — I mean, young teenagers — were being jailed for years with adults in men’s prisons. She filed a report on that, which led to some changes too. Always making things better.

Meanwhile, let’s get back to business. I was trying to convince her to marry me. I first proposed to her on a trip to Great Britain, the first time she’d ever been overseas. We were on the shoreline of this wonderful lake, Lake Ennerdale. I asked her to marry me and she said, “I can’t do it.”

So in 1974, I went home to teach in law school and Hillary moved to Massachusetts to keep working on children’s issues. This time, trying to figure out why so many kids counted in the census weren’t enrolled in school.

She found one of them sitting alone on her porch in a wheelchair. Once more, she filed a report about these kids and that helped influence ultimately the Congress to adopt the proposition that children with disabilities, physical or otherwise, should have equal access to public education. You saw the result of that last night when Anastasia Somoza talked. She never made fun of people with disabilities. She tried to empower them based on their abilities.

Meanwhile, I was still trying to get her to marry me. The second time I asked, I tried a different tactic. I said, “I really want you to marry me, but you shouldn’t do it.” She smiled and looked at me like what is this boy up to. She said, “That is not a very good sales pitch.” I said, “I know but it’s true.” And I meant it. It was true. I said, “I know most of the young Democrats our age who want to go into politics, they mean well and they speak well, but none of them is as good as you are at actually doing things to make positive changes in people’s lives.”

So I suggested she go home to Illinois or move to New York and look for a chance to run for office. She laughed and said, “Are you out of your mind? Nobody would ever vote for me.” So I finally got her to come visit me in Arkansas. And when she did, the people at the law school were so impressed, they offered her a teaching position. And she decided to take a huge chance.

She moved to a strange place, more rural and conservative than anywhere she had been. Where she knew good and well that people were wondering what in the world she was like and whether they could or should accept her. Didn’t take them long to find out what she was like.

She loved her teaching. She got frustrated when one of her students said, “What do you expect, I’m just from Arkansas.” She said, “Don’t tell me that. You’re as smart as anybody. You just have to believe in yourself and work for it and set high goals.” She believed anyone could make it. She also started the first legal aid clinic in northwest Arkansas, providing legal aid services to poor people who couldn’t pay for them.

One day, I was driving her to the airport to fly back to Chicago when we passed this little brick house that had a for-sale sign on it and she said, “Boy, that’s a pretty house.” It had 1,100 square feet, an attic fan and no air conditioner in hot Arkansas, and a screened-in porch. Hillary commented on what a uniquely designed and beautiful house it was.

So I took a big chance. I bought the house. My mortgage was $175 a month. When she came back, I picked her up and said, “You remember that house you like?” I said, “While you were gone, I bought it, and you have to marry me now.” The third time was the charm. We were married in that little house on October 11, 1975. I married my best friend.

I was still in awe after more than four years of being around her at how smart, and strong, and loving, and caring she was, and I really hoped that her choosing me and rejecting my advice to pursue her own career was a decision she would never regret. A little over a year later, we moved to Little Rock when I became attorney general and she joined the oldest law firm west of the Mississippi. She started Arkansas Advocates for Family and Children. It’s a group that is still active today.

In 1979, just after I became governor, I asked Hillary to chair a local health committee to help expand health care to isolated mountain areas. They recommended to do that partly by deploying trained nurse practitioners in places with no doctors to provide primary care that they were trying to provide.

It was a big deal then — highly controversial and very important. And I got the feeling that what she did for the rest of her life, she was doing there. She just went out and figured out what would help people and if it was controversial, she just tried to persuade people it was the right thing to do. It wasn’t the only big thing that happened that spring, my first year as governor. We found out we were going to be parents.

And time passed. On February 27, 1980, 15 minutes after I got home from the National Governors’ Conference in Washington, Hillary’s water broke, and off we went to the hospital. Chelsea was born just before midnight. And it was the greatest moment of my life. The miracle of a new beginning. The hole filled for me because my own father died before I was born and I had the absolute conviction that my daughter had the best mother in the whole world.

Through nursing school, kindergarten, T-ball, soccer, volleyball, and her passion for ballet. Through sleepovers, summer camps, family vacations, and Chelsea’s own very ambitious excursions, from Halloween parties in the neighborhood to a Viennese waltz gala in the White House, Hillary first and foremost was a mother. She became, as she often said, our family’s designated worrier. Born with an extra responsibility gene.

We rarely disagreed on parenting ,although she did believe that I had gone a little over the top when I took a couple days off with Chelsea to watch all sixPolice Academy movies back to back. When Chelsea was 9 months old, I was defeated for reelection in the Reagan landslide and I became overnight, I think, the youngest former governor in the history of the country. We only had two-year terms back then.

Hillary was great. Immediately she said, “What are we gonna do? Here is what we are going to do: We’re gonna get a house, you’re gonna get a job, we’re gonna enjoy being Chelsea’s parents, and if you want to run again you have to go talk to people and figure out why you lost, tell them you got the message, and show them you still have good ideas.” I followed her advice.

Within two days we had a house. I soon had a job. We had two fabulous years with Chelsea and in 1982, I became the first governor in the history of our state to become elected, defeated, and elected again. My experience is, it’s a pretty good thing to follow her advice.

The rest of the decade flew by it as our lives settled into a rhythm of family and work and friends. In 1983, Hillary chaired a committee to recommend new education standards for us in response to a court order to equalize school funding.

And a report by national experts said our woefully underfunded schools were the worst in America. Typical Hillary, she held listening tours in all 75 counties with our committee. She came up with really ambitious recommendations. For example, that we be the first state in America to require elementary counselors in every school because so many kids were having trouble at home and they needed it.

So I called the legislature into session, hoping to pass the standards, pass the pay rate for teachers, and raise the sales tax to pay for it all. I knew it would be hard to pass, but it got easier after Hillary headed the education committee and the chairman, a plainspoken farmer, said, “It looks to me like we elected the wrong Clinton.”

Well, by the time I ran for president nine years later, the same expert who said we had the worst schools in America said that our state was one of the two most improved states in America — and that is because of those standards that Hillary recommended.

Now, two years later, Hillary told me about a preschool program developed in Israel, called HIPPY: Home Instruction Program for Preschool Youngsters. The idea was to teach low-income parents, even those who couldn’t read, to be their children’s first teachers. She said she thought it would work in Arkansas. I said, “That’s great, what are we going to do about it?” She said, “I already did it. I called the woman in Israel and she’ll be here in about 10 days to help us get started.”

Next thing you know, I’m being dragged around to all these little preschool graduations. Keep in mind this is before many states even had universal kindergarten, and I’m being dragged to preschool graduations, watching these poor parents with tears in their eyes because they never thought they would be able to help their kids learn.

Twenty years of research has shown how well this program works to improve readiness for schools and academic achievement. There are a lot of young adults in America who have no idea Hillary had anything to do with it, but are enjoying better lives because they were in that program.

She did all of this while being a full-time worker, a mother, and enjoying our life. Why? Well, she is insatiably curious, she’s a natural leader, she’s a good organizer, and she’s the best darn change-maker I have ever met in my entire life.

So, look, this is a really important point for you to take out of this convention. If you believe in making change from the bottom up, if you believe the measure of change is how many lives are bettered, you know it is hard and some people think it is boring. Speeches like this are fun. Actually doing the work is hard. So people say, well, we need to change.

She has been around a long time. She sure has. And she has sure been worth every single year she has put into making people’s lives better. I can tell you this — if you were sitting where I am sitting and you heard what I have heard and at every dinner conversation, every lunch conversation, on every long walk, you would say, “This woman has never been satisfied with the status quo in anything.” She always wants to move the ball forward. That is just who she is.

When I became president with a commitment to reform health care, Hillary was a natural head to the health care task force. You all know we failed because we couldn’t break a Senate filibuster. Hillary immediately went to work on solving the problems the bill sought to address one by one.

The most important goal was to get more children with health insurance. In 1997, Congress passed the Children’s Health Insurance Program, still an important part of President Obama’s Affordable Care Act. It insures more than 8 million kids. There are a lot of other things in that bill she got done piece by piece, pushing the rock up the hill.

In 1997, she also teamed with the House minority leader, Tom DeLay, who maybe disliked me more than any of Newt Gingrich’s crowd. They worked on a build together to increase adoptions of children out of foster care. She wanted to do it because she knew that Tom, for all of our differences, was an adopted parent and she honored him for doing that. The bill that they worked on was passed with an overwhelming bipartisan majority and led to a big increase of children out of foster care, including not infant kids and special needs kids. It made life better, because she is a change-maker. That is what she does.

If you want to get something done, hire a busy woman

Now, when you are doing all of this, real life does not stop. 1997 was the year Chelsea finished high school and went to college. We were happy for her but sad for us to see her go. I will never forget moving her into her dorm room at Stanford. It would have been a great little reality flick. There I was, in a trance, just staring out the window trying not to cry, and there was Hillary on her hands and knees, desperately looking for one more drawer to put that liner paper in. Finally, Chelsea took charge and told us ever so gently that it was time for us to go. So, we closed a big chapter in the most important work of our lives. As you will see Thursday night, when Chelsea speaks, Hillary has done a pretty fine job of being a mother. And as you saw last night beyond a shadow of a doubt, so has Michelle Obama.

Now fast-forward, in 1999, congressman Charlie Rangel and other Democrats urged Hillary to run for the seat of retiring senator Pat Moynihan. We had always intended to go to New York after I left office and commute to Arkansas, but this had never occurred to either one of us. Hillary had never run for office before but she decided to give it a try. She began her campaign the way she always does things, by listening and learning. And after a tough battle, New York elected her to the seat once held by another outsider, Robert Kennedy.

And she did not let him down. Her early years were dominated by 9/11. By working to find the recovery. Then monitoring the health of and providing compensation to victims and first- and second-responders. She and Sen. Shuman were tireless and so were the house members.

In 2003, partly spurred on by what they were going through, she became the first senator in the history of New York ever to serve on the Armed Services Committee. So she tried to make sure people on the battlefield had proper equipment. She tried to expand, and did expand, health care coverage to members of the National Guard. She got longer family leave working with Senator Dodd for people caring for wounded servicemembers and she worked for more extensive care for people with traumatic brain injury.

She also served on a special Pentagon commission to propose changes necessary to meet our new security challenges. Newt Gingrich was on that commission. He told me what a good job she had done. I say that because nobody who has seriously dealt with the men and women in today’s military believes they are a “disaster.” They are a national treasure of all races, all religions, all walks of life.

Now, meanwhile, she compiled a really solid record, totally progressive, on economic and social issues. She voted for him against a proposed trade deal. She became the de facto economic development officer for the area outside of New York City. She worked for farmers, for winemakers, for small businesses and manufacturers. For upstate cities and rural areas that needed more ideas and more new investment to create new jobs. Something we have to do again in small town and rural America, in neighborhoods that of been left behind to our cities, in Indian country, and, yes, in coal country.

When she lost the hard-fought contest to President Obama in 2008, she worked for his election hard. But she hesitated to say yes when he asked her to join his Cabinet, because she so loved being a senator from New York. So like me, in a different context, he had to keep asking. But as we all saw and heard from Madeleine Albright, it was worth the effort and worth the wait.

As secretary of state, she worked hard to get strong sanctions against Iran’s nuclear program. And in what the Wall Street Journal called a “half-court shot at the buzzer,” she got Russia and China to support them. Her team negotiated the new START treaty with Russia to reduce nuclear weapons and establish inspections. And she got enough Republican support to get two thirds of the senate, the vote necessary to ratify the treaty.

She flew all night long from Cambodia to the Middle East to get a ceasefire that would avoid a full-out shooting war between Hamas and Gaza, to protect the peace of the region. She backed President Obama’s decision to go after Osama bin Laden. She launched a team — and this is really important today — she launched a team to fight back against terrorists online and built a new global counterterrorism effort. We have got to win this battle. In the mine field.

She put climate change at the center of our foreign policy. She negotiated the first agreement ever with China and India, officially committed to reduce their emissions.

And as she had been doing since she went to Beijing in 1995 and said, “Women’s rights are human rights and human rights are women’s rights,” she worked to empower women and girls around the world and to make the same exact declaration on behalf of the LGBT community in America and around the world.

And, nobody ever talks about this much — nobody ever talks about this much, but it is important to me. She tripled the number of people with AIDS in four countries whose lives are being saved with your tax dollars. Most of them in Africa, going from 1.7 million lives to 5.1 million lives and it did not cost you any more money. She just bought available FDA-approved generic drugs, something we need to do for the American people more.

Now, you do not know any of these people. You don’t know any of these 3.4 million people, but I guarantee, they know you. They know you because they see you as thinking their lives matter. They know you, and that’s one reason the approval of the United States was 20 points higher when she left the Secretary of State’s office than when she took it.

Geaux Hillary 2016 Travel Mug

When you want something done, hire a busy woman!

Now, how does this square? How does this square with the things that you heard at the Republican convention? What is the difference in what I told you and what they said? How do you square it? You can’t. One is real, the other is made up.

And you just have to decide which is which, my fellow Americans. The real one had done more positive change-making before she was 30-years-old than most politicians do with a lifetime in office. The real one, if you saw her friend Betsy Ebeling from Illinois today, has friends from childhood through Arkansas, where she has not lived for more than 20 years, who have gone all across America at their own expense to fight for the person they know.

The real one has earned the loyalty and respect and the fervent support of people who have worked with her in every stage of her life, including leaders around the world who know her to be able, straightforward, and completely trustworthy. The real one calls you when you’re sick, when your kid’s in trouble, or when there is a death in the family. The real one repeatedly drew praise from prominent Republicans when she was a senator and secretary of state.

So what is up with this? Well, if you win elections, on the theory the government is always bad and will mess up a two-car parade — a real change-maker represents a real threat. So your only option is to create a cartoon. A cartoon alternative. Then run against the cartoon. Cartoons are two-dimensional. They’re easy to absorb. Life in the world is complicated and real change is hard. And a lot of people even think it is boring. Good for you, because earlier today you nominated the real one.

We have to get back on schedule — look, I have lived a long, full, blessed life. It really took off when I met and fell in love with that girl in the spring of 1971. When I was president I worked hard to give you peace and shared prosperity, to give you an America where nobody is invisible or counted out. But, for this time, Hillary is uniquely qualified to seize the opportunities and reduce the risks we face and she is still the best darn change-maker I have ever known.

You could drop her in any trouble spot. Pick one. Come back in a month and somehow, some way, she will have made it better. That is just who she is. There are clear, achievable, affordable responses to our challenges. But we will not get to them if America makes the wrong choice in this election. That is why you should elect her.

And you should elect her because she will never quit when the going gets tough. She will never quit on you. She sent me in this primary to West Virginia, where she knew we were going to lose, to look those coal miners in the eye and say, “I am down here because Hillary sent me to tell you that if you really think you can get the economy back that you had 50 years ago, have at it, vote for whoever you want to. But if she wins, she is coming back for you to take you along on the ride to America’s future.”

And so I say to you, if you love this country and are working hard, are paying taxes, and obeying the law, and you’d like to become a citizen, you should choose immigration reform over somebody who wants to send you back. If you are a Muslim and you love America and freedom and you hate terror, stay here and help us win and make the future together.

We want you. If you are a young African American disillusioned and afraid, we saw in Dallas how great our police officers can be. Help us build a future where nobody is afraid to walk outside, including the people who wear blue to protect our future.

Hillary will make us stronger together. You know it because she spent a lifetime doing it. I hope you will do it. I hope you will elect her. Those of us who have more yesterdays than tomorrows tend to care more about our children and grandchildren. The reason you should elect her is that in the greatest country on Earth, we have always been about tomorrow. Your children and grandchildren will bless you forever if you do. God bless you.

Thank you.

From Denny: Talk about rock the house! First Lady Michelle Obama delivered a very positive uplifting and inspiring speech in this dark vitriolic political season. It may be Hillary Clinton's convention but Michelle Obama clearly owned the room, leaving viewers and the press with a lasting afterglow into the next day...

What was most telling is her point of view as a black family in the White House, a house built by slaves. Talk about knowing "you've come a long way, baby!" What was chilling was the picture she painted of her two young daughters, at the time who were ages seven and ten, being whisked off to school in a car stuffed full of men with guns and seeing her daughters' faces pressed against the glass looking back at her as they drove off. "What have we done?" Mrs. Obama asked. This is not exactly the kind of situation you desire for your children. The life of a public servant has many downfalls for the family.

Mrs. Obama extolled the virtues of America and expressed a very confident view of the country's social progress as she embraced Hillary Clinton as the natural heir to her husband's presidency. Mrs. Obama also took the time to do what has not been done enough by Hillary's own campaign: she listed the many deeds of Hillary Clinton that led to this generation of women and people of color possessing more rights from the fruits of her labor.

Twenty-five years ago Hillary Clinton was considered abrasive for demanding more rights for women and people of color. Today it's just taken for granted. But there was a time when Hillary Clinton was a pioneer, something this youngest generation still does not fully appreciate or understand just how much of an uphill fight Hillary took on then. Hillary Clinton has been a very valuable public servant for much of her adult life. We are all luckier for it that Hillary Clinton chose to be a political survivor no matter how much poison is spewed at her from the Republican Party of liars, crooks and bullies.

Speaking of liars and bullies, Mrs. Obama talked pointedly about Republican candidate Donald Trump, accomplished deftly all without mentioning his name. Mrs. Obama dismissed Trump's message that America isn't great but needs to become great again. Of course, Trump says he can do it all by himself without anyone's help. That man is so not realistic. Mrs. Obama chose to declare just how great America still is and will remain so: "Don't let anyone ever tell you that this country isn't great. This, right now, is the greatest country on earth."

Is it any wonder that the Obamas captured the attention and admiration of this country and the world? They always work hard to take the high road no matter how much poison is thrown at them from the grumpy and caustic Republicans. Can't wait to see her on the campaign trail as she will be an awesome surrogate for Hillary. But, more than for Hillary's sake, Michelle Obama is a reminder to take care of our future, take care of our children, our neighbor's children and the world's children to make the world a better place.
MRS. OBAMA: Thank you all. (Applause.) Thank you so much. You know, it’s hard to believe that it has been eight years since I first came to this convention to talk with you about why I thought my husband should be President. (Applause.) Remember how I told you about his character and conviction, his decency and his grace -– the traits that we’ve seen every day that he’s served our country in the White House.

I also told you about our daughters –- how they are the heart of our hearts, the center of our world. And during our time in the White House, we’ve had the joy of watching them grow from bubbly little girls into poised young women -– a journey that started soon after we arrived in Washington, when they set off for their first day at their new school.

I will never forget that winter morning as I watched our girls, just seven and ten years old, pile into those black SUVs with all those big men with guns. (Laughter.) And I saw their little faces pressed up against the window, and the only thing I could think was, “What have we done?” (Laughter.) See, because at that moment, I realized that our time in the White House would form the foundation for who they would become, and how well we managed this experience could truly make or break them.

That is what Barack and I think about every day as we try to guide and protect our girls through the challenges of this unusual life in the spotlight -- how we urge them to ignore those who question their father’s citizenship or faith. (Applause.) How we insist that the hateful language they hear from public figures on TV does not represent the true spirit of this country. (Applause.) How we explain that when someone is cruel, or acts like a bully, you don’t stoop to their level -– no, our motto is, when they go low, we go high. (Applause.)

With every word we utter, with every action we take, we know our kids are watching us. We as parents are their most important role models. And let me tell you, Barack and I take that same approach to our jobs as President and First Lady, because we know that our words and actions matter not just to our girls, but to children across this country –- kids who tell us, “I saw you on TV, I wrote a report on you for school.” Kids like the little black boy who looked up at my husband, his eyes wide with hope, and he wondered, “Is my hair like yours?” (Applause.)

And make no mistake about it, this November, when we go to the polls, that is what we’re deciding -– not Democrat or Republican, not left or right. No, this election, and every election, is about who will have the power to shape our children for the next four or eight years of their lives. (Applause.) And I am here tonight because in this election, there is only one person who I trust with that responsibility, only one person who I believe is truly qualified to be President of the United States, and that is our friend, Hillary Clinton. (Applause.)

See, I trust Hillary to lead this country because I’ve seen her lifelong devotion to our nation’s children –- not just her own daughter, who she has raised to perfection –- (applause) -- but every child who needs a champion: Kids who take the long way to school to avoid the gangs. Kids who wonder how they’ll ever afford college. Kids whose parents don’t speak a word of English but dream of a better life. Kids who look to us to determine who and what they can be.

You see, Hillary has spent decades doing the relentless, thankless work to actually make a difference in their lives -- (applause) -- advocating for kids with disabilities as a young lawyer. Fighting for children’s health care as First Lady and for quality child care in the Senate. And when she didn’t win the nomination eight years ago, she didn’t get angry or disillusioned. (Applause.) Hillary did not pack up and go home. Because as a true public servant, Hillary knows that this is so much bigger than her own desires and disappointments. (Applause.) So she proudly stepped up to serve our country once again as Secretary of State, traveling the globe to keep our kids safe.

And look, there were plenty of moments when Hillary could have decided that this work was too hard, that the price of public service was too high, that she was tired of being picked apart for how she looks or how she talks or even how she laughs. But here’s the thing -- what I admire most about Hillary is that she never buckles under pressure. (Applause.) She never takes the easy way out. And Hillary Clinton has never quit on anything in her life. (Applause.)

And when I think about the kind of President that I want for my girls and all our children, that’s what I want. I want someone with the proven strength to persevere. Someone who knows this job and takes it seriously. Someone who understands that the issues a President faces are not black and white and cannot be boiled down to 140 characters. (Applause.) Because when you have the nuclear codes at your fingertips and the military in your command, you can’t make snap decisions. You can’t have a thin skin or a tendency to lash out. I want a President with a record of public service, someone whose life’s work shows our children that we don’t chase fame and fortune for ourselves, we fight to give everyone a chance to succeed -- (applause) -- and we give back, even when we’re struggling ourselves, because we know that there is always someone worse off, and there but for the grace of God go I. (Applause.)

I want a President who will teach our children that everyone in this country matters –- a President who truly believes in the vision that our founders put forth all those years ago: That we are all created equal, each a beloved part of the great American story. (Applause.) And when crisis hits, we don’t turn against each other -– no, we listen to each other. We lean on each other. Because we are always stronger together. (Applause.)

If you want to get something done, hire a busy woman

You see, Hillary understands that the President is about one thing and one thing only -– it’s about leaving something better for our kids. That’s how we’ve always moved this country forward –- by all of us coming together on behalf of our children -- folks who volunteer to coach that team, to teach that Sunday school class because they know it takes a village. Heroes of every color and creed who wear the uniform and risk their lives to keep passing down those blessings of liberty.

Police officers and protestors in Dallas who all desperately want to keep our children safe. (Applause.) People who lined up in Orlando to donate blood because it could have been their son, their daughter in that club. (Applause.) Leaders like Tim Kaine -- (applause) -- who show our kids what decency and devotion look like. Leaders like Hillary Clinton, who has the guts and the grace to keep coming back and putting those cracks in that highest and hardest glass ceiling until she finally breaks through, lifting all of us along with her. (Applause.)

That is the story of this country, the story that has brought me to this stage tonight, the story of generations of people who felt the lash of bondage, the shame of servitude, the sting of segregation, but who kept on striving and hoping and doing what needed to be done so that today, I wake up every morning in a house that was built by slaves -- (applause) -- and I watch my daughters –- two beautiful, intelligent, black young women –- playing with their dogs on the White House lawn. (Applause.) And because of Hillary Clinton, my daughters –- and all our sons and daughters -– now take for granted that a woman can be President of the United States. (Applause.)

So don’t let anyone ever tell you that this country isn’t great, that somehow we need to make it great again. Because this, right now, is the greatest country on earth. (Applause.) And as my daughters prepare to set out into the world, I want a leader who is worthy of that truth, a leader who is worthy of my girls’ promise and all our kids’ promise, a leader who will be guided every day by the love and hope and impossibly big dreams that we all have for our children.

So in this election, we cannot sit back and hope that everything works out for the best. We cannot afford to be tired, or frustrated, or cynical. No, hear me -- between now and November, we need to do what we did eight years ago and four years ago: We need to knock on every door. We need to get out every vote. We need to pour every last ounce of our passion and our strength and our love for this country into electing Hillary Clinton as President of the United States of America.

The Social Poets: Freaky Friday: Comic Jimmy Fallon Mocks Donald Trump GOP Convention Entrance: From Denny: Donald Trump should have figured it out by now that the only guys who can out showbiz him are the comedians. Jimmy Fallon never disappoints, irreverent as always and spot on accurate.

Just in case any of our fellow Americans living overseas missed this funny because you are living in a country of heavy censorship, I'm putting this one up for you. (So far, none of my blogs have landed on a censorship list in some foreign country because I'm too small to notice. ) For all the rest of us, it's good to laugh yet again even if you have seen this clip a hundred times. It just possesses that lasting quality.

Donald Trump really is just too full of himself. It's like he has appointed himself dictator, but more on that later about what has been popping up in the news that could be prove quite chilling if he were actually elected and propelled into the White House.

Meanwhile, let's just get a well deserved laugh on Freaky Friday here because Donald Trump really does fly his Freak Flag a little too often. But the Comedy Gods are keeping him somewhat humble. Check out Jimmy Fallon's rendition...

Read on to view the hilarious video clip at my other blog for political humor: The Social Poets: Freaky Friday: Comic Jimmy Fallon Mocks Donald Trump GOP Convention Entrance
