We installed the dev build on one of our MacBook Pros and used it over the weekend, and while we won’t be able to see any huge changes in day-to-day workflow until our favorite apps are updated to take advantage of Lion, we did see plenty of interesting system-level features and additions — and yes, iOS’s influence is all over the place.

Popular British soap Eastenders is to create a story line which involves burning down part of their set so that the programme can be shown in HD in the near future.

Many more BBC programmes have started being available to enjoy in high definition, however Eastenders has never been transferred to HD because of the fact that the sets are too shabby, and as such would be noticed by hi-def viewers.

As a result the BBC is going to drastic measures to make sure that the hi-def makeover works, by getting rid of one of the most iconic landmarks of the soap - the pub.

This comes as the corporation announce the launch of a new HD channel this autumn – ‘BBC One HD’, which will be a ‘simulcast’ version of BBC One with most main programmes in high definition…

Because of the fact that there is an increasing amount of shows moving to HD the BBC see it necessary to introduce another HD channel as well as ‘BBC HD‘, one which will feature only the HD shows from BBC One.

Pop singer Justin Bieber has become the target of an internet joke. A public vote on the singer’s tour website has being asking visitors which country he should tour next, with no restrictions on the nations that could be voted on…

This has spurred users to nominate North Korea as the country for him to visit, and thanks to the media attention the number votes for this nuclear nation has increased – there are now almost half a million votes to send Bieber to the secretive communist nation.

Given the fact that almost all citizens of North Korea are denied internet access and there are restrictive controls over all media, it is unlikely that any of the votes have actually come from within the country.

The BBC have released preview images of a new BBC News website which is to be launched next week.

The current two-year-old design for the popular news website will be replaced by a new template and layout, with some new integrated features.

The new site appears to make better use of space, particularly on larger screen resolutions. There is also a new navigation menu which now runs along the top of the page as opposed to the side. One feature which will be pushed on news article pages is the sharing to popular social networks. News stories from your local area will also be easier to find than at present…

Click on the images to enlarge.

International users who regularly access the BBC News site will continue to see the old website, however the United States and Canada will be pointed to an entirely seperate branded site, with news features from BBC America and BBC Canada TV included.

You can find out more on the new changes by clicking here.

In a game which panned out exremely poorly for England where they initially went behind 2 goals, the team were able to catchup with a goal, and then the most controversial moment of the game came.

Lampard was able to score as the ball hit the crossbar and bounced down past the line, however this went unseen by the linesman, and the goal was not given which should have leveled the game…

Numerous replays at different angles clearly show that a goal should have been awarded, which leads us to the question why the FIFA football association persist in not using technology in the sport, particularly as it is the wealthiest game in the world and such technology to aid decision-making is used in many other sports.

Before the World Cup 2010 commenced FIFA said in a statement:
“The application of modern technologies can be very costly, and therefore not applicable on a global level.”

To read the FIFA statement in full click here.

Following Apple’s official launch of the new iPhone, the new device went on sale throughout the US and UK last Thursday and was welcomed by an extremely high demand, with the Apple website crashing and many mobile providers selling out.

However many occupants of iPhone 4 have started to complain about the mobile’s antenna – Steve Jobs explained during the launch how the ‘shell’ of the device acted as the antenna to provide a greater signal, although users have been complaining how the signal drops when it is held in your hand, as demonstrated in the video below…

Steve Jobs responded to a query about the problem from one owner by saying they should “just avoid holding it in that way”.

The official advice is to “avoid gripping it in the lower left corner in a way that covers both sides of the black strip in the metal band”. Apple also said that users could alternatively buy a case to shield the antenna, which Apple are pushing on their online store – retailing at £25.00.

The BBC Trust has approved a project which is hoped will change the way we watch our favourite programmes, and lead the way in internet TV.

Project Canvas is a partnership between the BBC, ITV, BT, TalkTalk and Channel 5 and 4, and aims to develop a so-called Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) standard.

The service will see a range of set-top boxes available which will enable users to link broadband to their TV and access ‘TV catchup’ services such as BBC iPlayer and 4oD in front of a larger screen, as opposed to having to watch via your PC.

After a large amount of time considering the proposal, the BBC Trust – which represents UK License Fee Payers – approved the project and explained that it would “deliver significant public value” for viewers.

Project director Richard Halton said:-
“This brings the benefits of next-generation TV to all consumers, including those who choose not to subscribe to pay-TV”

This news comes after Google recently announced their new kit being introduced, which will enable users to search and play online content of any kind via the TV. The PS3 also enables you to access and use BBC iPlayer via its console’s web browser.

Satellite Broadcaster BSkyB is bringing Sky Sports News to an end on Freeview – fans of the popular channel will have to be a Sky TV, Virgin Media or Talk Talk customer in order to continue using the channel for their sport updates.

Sky Sports News has been available for free for 8 years, and Sky claim that the move will allow the channel to benefit from “continued growth in subscription revenues”.

The 24-hour sports news channel’s Freeview slot will be replaced by Sky 3+1 – showing programmes from Sky 3 an hour after transmission, which largely consists of repeats and advertisements pushing the Sky TV service.

The move reinforces Rupert Murdoch’s attitude to the “benefits of using the reach of the free-to-air service as a marketing channel to attract subscribers to its pay-TV service” [The Guardian].

With subscription charges about to start on the Times news website as Rupert Murdoch’s media empire searches for new revenue streams, News Corp is undergoing a major restructuring of its business model.
