AUTO21 Announces New Theme Coordinator

AUTO21 is pleased to announce Dr. Mark Kozdras, Program Manager, Automotive Materials, CANMET Materials Technology Laboratory (CANMET-MTL) at Natural Resources Canada is the new Theme Coordinator for Materials and Manufacturing.

Dr. Kozdras is a professional engineer in Ontario and has been a member of the American Society for Materials and the Society of Automotive Engineers for over 20 years. As a technical manager at CANMET-MTL, Kozdras looks forward to developing his own materials research program to support automotive lightweighting and energy efficiency initiatives. We look forward to Dr. Kozdras’ contributions as a theme coordinator.

New Short-term R&D Funding Available

To help researchers and industry partners develop new R&D opportunities, AUTO21 introduces the Venture Partnership Fund (VPF). This short-term funding is designed to help AUTO21 researchers explore the merits of potential longer-term research or commercialization initiatives with current or new industry partners. Successful VPF projects will receive limited funding for six months. This fund replaces the former Feasibility Fund.

“Our previous Feasibility Fund projects helped pave the way for several longer-term AUTO21 projects,” says Michelle Watters, AUTO21 Chief Operating Officer and Executive Director. “The Venture Partnership Fund reflects the evolution of the Feasibility Fund to a more responsive and flexible model that meets industry’s R&D needs.”

University of Toronto Student Wins TestDRIVE Competition for New Seafood Shell Plastic

A new biodegradable material made from shrimp and crab shells that can replace petroleum-based plastics used in auto components helped a University of Toronto student win the AUTO21 TestDRIVE competition. Aaron Guan placed first, receiving a $10,000 scholarship for his work on recyclable, lightweight, polymeric nanocomposites.

AUTO21 is pleased to announce Dr. Andrew Howard of the University of Toronto and the Hospital for Sick Children is the new Theme Coordinator for Health, Safety and Injury Prevention.

Dr. Howard is an associate professor in the division of orthopaedic surgery at the University of Toronto and is one of Canada’s leading researchers on child injuries, especially those related to motor vehicles. He has been with AUTO21 since 2001 as a network researcher and project leader and brings significant prestige and knowledge to the Research Management Committee and the theme coordinators group. We look forward to Dr. Howard’s contributions as a theme coordinator.

At its annual general meeting held in Ottawa, Ontario, AUTO21 welcomed a new chair for its board of directors plus two new members.

Stephen Beatty, managing director of Toyota Canada Inc., was elected as the new chair of the board. Mr. Beatty joined the board in 2006 and has served as the vice-chair for the last two years. Mr. Beatty brings extensive knowledge of the global automotive sector to the board. In his role at Toyota, Mr. Beatty is responsible for marketing and external affairs for the Toyota and Lexus brands, which includes public relations, environmental, regulatory and government affairs activities in Canada.

New survey results show that the appropriate use of child and booster seats is on the rise in Canada. However, the survey also reveals that some parents and caregivers do not restrain their children at all, or are not using child seats correctly.

The AUTO21 Network of Centres of Excellence and Transport Canada jointly released the findings of the 2010 Canadian National Survey on Child Restraint Use. The survey was conducted to determine whether parents and caregivers properly restrain children in child seats and seat belts when travelling in vehicles.

Innovative Technology Earns Queenâs University Student Top Honour in National Automotive Competition

New technology to predict shear fractures in advanced high strength steels has helped a Queen’s University student win a national automotive research competition. Andrew Sloan, a Master of Applied Science student, won the AUTO21 TestDRIVE competition, receiving a $10,000 scholarship for his work on void damage rates in dual-phase steel grades.

The automotive sector’s shift towards light-weight vehicles demands a material change from conventional high strength steel towards thinner and higher strength sheet steels. However, the high strengths of advanced steel grades typically comes at a price of reduced ductility, which may result in costly premature component failure during particular forming operations. Through testing, researchers may be able to develop models to understand the failure mechanisms in high strength steels and mediate errors under common stress states.

This year, AUTO21 sent Karl Mikkelsen, an HQP working on the project Hybrid Active Safety Systems and Grid Interfacing from the University of Waterloo, to develop his leadership and communication skills and become an ASM master teacher.

For police officers, the issue is compounded by the amount of equipment they wear at all times and the limited space within the vehicle seats.
