Opera Mezza Loudspeakers Review

Italian speaker maker Opera has been making headlines recently with their great-sounding demos at various audio shows, earning them positive print and online reviews. I reviewed their floor-standing Seconda (home-theater-loudspeakers/speaker-systems/opera-seconda-loudspeakers-review.html) model, which I found to be beautifully made, with sonics to match. Marc Phillips, of Colleen Cardas Imports (http://colleencardasimports.com/), contacted me about reviewing the Mezza (http://www.operaloudspeakers.com/en/collezione/classica/7/opera-mezza.html), a two-way monitor that had recently getting much attention in Europe. I accepted based on how much I enjoyed the Seconda in my system. As I mentioned in my Seconda review, all Opera loudspeakers are made in their Treviso, Italy, factory. They are the sister company to Unison Research, fine purveyors of mostly tube based electronics. I reviewed both the Unico CDPrimo (home-theater-audio-sources/cd-players/unison-research-cdprimo-cd-player-review.html) and CDE (home-theater-audio-sources/cd-players/unison-research-unico-cde-cd-player-review.html) CD players. I found the workmanship, styling, and sound to be wonderful. As a matter of fact,

'Arrested Development' Finally Confirmed for May 26th

We tend to focus more on high-end gear than individual shows here on AV Rev but there are some things that you just can't ignore, like the cult classic known as 'Arrested Development.' The show is finally returning on May 26th, but not to TV. The show is exclusive to Netflix. This marks a potential for big change in the industry, and the first major show to move from TV to the internet. Not only does it mean a possible change in the way business is done, but it gives hope to fans of shows cancelled on traditional TV channels. If the show is a success on 'Netflix,' we could start to see some big changes. I

Vanatoo Transparent One Powered Monitors Review

Active speakers have had a tough road in the audiophile world. They are fairly commonplace in recording studios and other pro sound environments. I have heard several theories for this, including the fact that powered speakers are not as tweakable. Certainly, audiophiles seem to relish in the ability to independently choose every element of a system, and maybe most importantly, the amplification.Powered speakers do offer several distinct advantages over passive speakers. In a nutshell, amplifiers inside powered speakers are usually matched to the specific characteristics of the drivers, enclosure, impedance, and frequency response. Another obvious advantage is the shorter signal path, and there is no need for speaker cables, which account for huge cost savings and other technical shortcomings. There is one market active speakers, especially monitors, have taken a foothold, and that is in desktop computer audio set ups. The obvious reason for this is the limited space the desktop

Rein Audio X3-DAC Review

Rein Audio (http://reinaudio.com/Home_Page.html) impressed me when I had the opportunity to review their very fine sounding X-DAC (home-theater-preamplifiers/stereo-preamps/rein-audio-x-dac.html) last year. The German based company, just a few years old, has since developed a few more products, including a headphone amplifier and a series of high performance cables. They also decided to design, from scratch, a higher end DAC with a few more options at a slightly higher price point. This could be seen as a risky move, since the DAC market is pretty crowded and, needless to say, very competitive. Rein Audio developed the new X3-DAC (http://reinaudio.com/X-DAC.html), priced at $1280, to offer users a higher end experience, with several new features and upgrades over the X-DAC. First, the TosLink, Coaxial, AES/EBU, and USB inputs all handle 192 Khz, 24 bit data, and there is a pretty decent front panel LED display. There

Users often noted exceptional comfort, sound quality and value. The company is especially known for planar headphones. Planar ‘phones are noted for exceptional dynamics and resolution. For review, I received their $99 RE-400 In-Ear Monitors (http://hifiman.us/Products/?pid=143) (IEMs). In the distant past, I have had iffy relationships with "ear buds."
