A couple of weeks ago, Jack Thurston from The Bike Show kindly interviewed me. He did a splendid job of editing my ramblings down into something coherent and published the result today. You can hear the interview by clicking on the play button below, introduced by no less a cycling hero than Eddy Merckx !

I just received a rather triumphant press release from Cambridge Cycling Campaign. It's a "good news story" about "5000 more bicycles" which I expect will be reported verbatim elsewhere. However as an ex resident of the city it instantly rang bells for me and I think it deserves a little analysis before blindly reproducing the claims.

The central claim is that <img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/AViewFromTheCyclePath-DavidHembrow/~4/mLdWF-0XDNI" height="1" width="1"/>

<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/AViewFromTheCyclePath-DavidHembrow/~3/mLdWF-0XDNI/exaggeration-considered-harmful-hiding.html" title="Exaggeration considered harmful. It snowed on and off today. This didn't stop me riding to the post office to send customers' parcels on their way.

As you'll see from the video, it actually didn't stop many people doing what they normally do by bike. If you wind through to 2:35 on the video you'll see what the city centre looks like on a snowy day.

Cycling in winter is something that is normal here for everyone, not just an<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/AViewFromTheCyclePath-DavidHembrow/~4/lzsPaz02_H8" height="1" width="1"/>

The Third Track

My father used to point out that historical dramas on TV always got one thing wrong. When horses were shown pulling carriages along unfinished roads, there would be just two tracks. That's not how it used to be. In the past, there would be a third track in the middle created by horses' hooves and a track either side created by the wheels of the carriages. This year it the circular route started from Zwolle and it attracted 157 velomobiles which was enough for a new world record. 157 is about 1/10th of the total number of velomobiles in the Netherlands, though quite a lot of participants <img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/AViewFromTheCyclePath-DavidHembrow/~4/f918EN4Qt_w" height="1" width="1"/>

Snow. We had four cm of snow last night, the first real snow of the winter. It looks wonderful, but snow can be dangerous for cyclists especially if it is not removed from the cycle-paths and if it becomes compacted.

I've mentioned before that Dutch roads and cycle-paths don't often suffer from potholes. There's currently a patch of slightly rough surface between our home and the local shops, but that's as bad as it gets. I can't think of any actual potholes on any roads or cycle-paths that we use.

The reason, of course, is that standards of maintenance <img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/AViewFromTheCyclePath-DavidHembrow/~4/VfsP63kjf2E" height="1" width="1"/>

Consistent, Convenient, High Quality Cycle-Paths Encourage Cycling

To achieve a high degree of subjective safety and through this convince the whole population to cycle, cyclists need to be kept away from motor vehicles. A comprehensive network of cycle-paths, as seen here in Assen, is a particularly good way to do this.

The photo on the right, from the Crap Waltham Forest blog, shows how High Road in Leytonstone in London has been transformed to move car parking off the road. This has resulted in narrowing of the carriageway and a worsening of conditions for cyclists.

Just like anywhere else in the world, maintenance vehicles in The Netherlands sometimes stop on cycle-paths.
